Modi was given a ceremonial welcome, following which several bilateral talks with a focus on areas of energy and defence&nbsp;and other events were organised in honour of his visit.&nbsp;Modi's visit to the UAE comes after he concluded a two-day visit to France.&nbsp;

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said, "He (Modi) will meet the President of UAE Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. We have all seen significant transformation taking place in the India-UAE relationship. The bilateral trade is currently very strong, $85 billion dollars between India and UAE."

Modi and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had last met in June in Abu Dhabi when the Indian PM visited the UAE while on his return from the G7 summit in Munich. In February, both countries held a virtual summit. During the summit, Modi and Mohammed expressed deep satisfaction at the continuous growth in bilateral relations in all sectors.

One of the major highlights of this summit was the signing and exchange of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The agreement would provide significant benefits to Indian and UAE businesses, including enhanced market access and reduced tariffs. Two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) were also signed between the two countries.&nbsp;

Modi emplaned for the UAE after concluding his two-day visit to France. "This France visit was a memorable one. It was made even more special because I got the opportunity to take part in the Bastille Day celebrations. Seeing the Indian contingent get a pride of place in the parade was wonderful. I am grateful to President Emmanuel Macron and the French people for the exceptional warmth and hospitality," he tweeted.&nbsp;

Modi was the guest of honour&nbsp;at the Bastille Day military parade. On Friday, Modi and Macron&nbsp;watched French and Indian soldiers march down the tree-lined Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, while French-made Rafale fighter jets India bought in 2015 took part in a fly-past over the Arc de Triomphe.

Indian PM Modi arrives in UAE, holds bilateral talks with President Mohamed

With a visit to the Dubai Expo and the signing of the India-UAE free trade agreement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in United Arab Emirates (UAE) on January 6.

PM Modi will be visiting the "India Pavillion" at the Dubai Expo. It is a massive four-floor&nbsp;pavilion which showcases India's culture, Yoga, Ayurveda and space programme.

The pavilion was inaugurated by India's trade minister Piyush Goyal on October 1. It has been visited by many foreign leaders including by Cyprus foreign minister and the King of Sweden. The pavilion also has a model of Ram temple and the BAPS Hindu temple that is being built in Abu Dhabi.

The other key focus of the visit will be the signing of the India-UAE free trade agreement. Earlier this month speaking at an event, trade minister Goyal said that the FTA is an "outstanding achievement for India. It will open lot of doors for lot of sectors...it will be the fastest FTA India has ever entered into. A full FTA".

Talks for the FTA was launched in September. December first week saw the third&nbsp;round of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Delhi. Trade between the two&nbsp;countries has&nbsp;been robust. UAE is the second-largest export destination of India after US&nbsp;with an amount of over $30 billion for the year 2018-19.

For UAE, India was the second-largest trading partner during 2018 with US$ 36 billion (non-oil trade). UAE has committed $100 billion for investment and infrastructure creation in India.

India and UAE have "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership"&nbsp;and have seen increased engagement at every level. &nbsp;

PM Modi had visited the West Asian country in 2015, 2018 and 2019. UAE has conferred the highest civilian award "the Order of Zayed"&nbsp;on the PM. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, (MBZ) Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces&nbsp;had visited India in February 2016. MBZ visited India again in January, 2017 as the chief guest at India’s Republic day celebrations

The country's diaspora forms a deep connect with India. UAE hosts one of the largest populations of Indians outside of India. Indian expatriate community is approximately&nbsp;3.3 million which is the largest ethnic community in UAE constituting roughly about 30 per cent of the country’s population. Among the Indian states, Kerala is the most represented followed by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. &nbsp;Indians from the northern states also form a significant portion of the UAE's&nbsp;population.

PM Modi will not be going to Kuwait&nbsp;as was being reported earlier. The last high-level visit from India to the country under the current Modi government was by external affairs minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in June. During the visit, EAM called on the Prime Minister of Kuwait and held a meeting with foreign minister of Kuwait. The last prime ministerial visit from India to Kuwait was by PM Indira Gandhi in 1981 and work is on for the visit of PM Modi to the country soon.

The visit of PM Modi to UAE will be his first foreign visit in 2022. More visits are planned next year, including to Denmark, Germany, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and others but the COVID-19 situation globally will weigh on how the plan goes forward.

Since the Dhaka visit, PM has been to Washington for the Quad summit, New York for United Nations General Assembly meet, Italy for G20 summit and UK's Glasgow for the climate summit.

It looks clear now that Prime Minister will be travelling to the United Arab Emirates in early January. PM Modi will be visiting&nbsp;the mega India pavilion at Dubai Expo. He had earlier&nbsp;travelled to the west Asian country&nbsp;which has emerged as a close ally of New Delhi in 2015, 2018 and&nbsp;2019.

Germany

PM Modi&nbsp;is also expected to travel to Germany for the 6th Indo-German Inter-Governmental Consultations(IGC) that alternates every two&nbsp;years between the two&nbsp;countries.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel had been to India for the IGC in 2019. The visit of PM Modi to Berlin will provide an occasion to meet the new Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz.&nbsp;

Asked about the visit, German envoy Walter Lindner in response to a WION question earlier this year said, "You have to ask your prime minister because this is the standard because every two&nbsp;years either we come&nbsp;or PM comes to Germany. Merkel was here two&nbsp;ago, so next year if the Covid situation allows your PM will be in Germany. So we hope it happens within the next 6 months, this will be the first official meeting of the two&nbsp;heads of government."

Germany is also the chair of G7 in 2022. India has been regularly invited for the summit since 2019 when France was the host of the summit. Last year&nbsp;saw the then US President Trump talking about inviting India and others for the summit in the country but the summit never happened. This year UK as the host invited India but due to the second&nbsp;wave of the COVID-19 crisis in India&nbsp;PM Modi could not visit.

Denmark

A large part of PM's visits will be to Europe this year. He is expected to travel to Denmark for the second India-Nordic summit.&nbsp;During the visit of Denmark PM Mette Frederiksen in October this year&nbsp;she had invited the Indian PM for the second India-Nordic summit to be convened in Copenhagen in 2022.&nbsp;The first Indo-Nordic summit involving all five&nbsp;Nordic countries - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland took&nbsp;place in April 2018 in Stockholm.&nbsp;

Indonesia

Indonesia's Bali&nbsp;will see leaders of G20 grouping descending for the annual summit of the twenty&nbsp;most powerful economies. Next year's summit is important for India since the presidency will be handed over to New Delhi. Indonesian President Joko Widodo will hand over the presidency to PM Modi during the summit that is expected to take place in October 2022. India will host&nbsp;the summit in 2023&nbsp;for the first time.

Russia

Russia will be a key stop next year for the annual India-Russia summit. Russian President was in New Delhi in December for the summit that alternates annually between the two&nbsp;countries.

PM Modi last visited Russia's Vladivostok in 2019 for the summit.&nbsp; President Putin's was the only head of state&nbsp;to visit India this year after Denmark PM's visit. New Delhi in pre-Covid times has been a busy capital with many world leaders visiting the country. The last major visit to India was of Myanmar's then president and former US President Trump in February 2020.

Japan&nbsp;

Japan will be the destination for the second&nbsp;Quad in-person summit. The Quad grouping of India, US, Australia and Japan consolidated this year with a virtual summit followed by an in-person summit in September in Washington.

The grouping whose emergence&nbsp;China is not very pleased about has worked on a number of issues from producing Covid vaccines and Quad principles on technology, design, development and&nbsp;governance. The in-person Quad summit in Japan is likely to take place in February according to initial indications.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka

In the neighbourhood, PM could travel to Sri Lanka for the BIMSTEC or&nbsp;Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka is the chair of the group and will host the 5th in-person summit next year. The country was expected to host the summit this year&nbsp;but it did not materialise. On the agenda at the summit will be the approval of the BIMSTEC Charter, BIMSTEC Master Plan for Transport Connectivity &amp; BIMSTEC Convention on Mutual Legal Assistance on&nbsp;criminal matters.

The grouping is also working on the finalisation of the BIMSTEC coastal shipping agreement and the motor vehicles agreement. In 2019, India had invited BIMSTEC heads of government and&nbsp;states for PM Modi's oath-taking ceremony for the second term. After Sri Lanka, Thailand will be the host of the grouping.&nbsp;BIMSTEC group has been high on India's priority&nbsp;given SAARC has largely been defunct.

Rwanda

Rwanda&nbsp;is likely to be the Prime Minister's destination in Africa since the country hosts the Commonwealth summit (or Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting) CHOGM meet. The summit has been postponed twice&nbsp;in 2020 and&nbsp;2021 due to Covid and new dates have been suggested. PM Modi last participated in the CHOGM summit in the UK in 2018.&nbsp;

ASEAN, SCO &amp;&nbsp;BRICS

Other destination of India's PM includes Cambodia for the ASEAN&nbsp;summit, Uzbekistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and China for BRICS but it depends if the summit happens in-person. The BRICS and ASEAN&nbsp;summit have been taking place virtually for the past two years. The&nbsp;SCO summit this year was in hybrid mode due to the COVID-19 crisis.
