The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the plea of Indrani Mukerjea, accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora, against a ruling denying her permission to travel abroad.
A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal directed the trial court to conduct the proceedings in the case within a year and upheld the Bombay High Court order refusing her plea.
"There is no guarantee that you will come back. Trial is at an advanced stage. Taking into consideration the fact that the trial is ongoing, we are not inclined to consider the request at this stage. We direct the trial court to expedite the hearing and conclude within a year," it said.

The Bombay High Court, however, set aside the order on September 27 after the CBI filed an appeal. Mukerjea moved the apex court against the high court order.
In her plea, filed through advocate Sana Raees Khan, Mukerjea said she was a British citizen as she sought permission to visit Spain and her home country for "making necessary changes and amendments and taking care of pending work that cannot be transacted without her personal presence".
She argued the activation of a digital certificate was a must for all relevant work and administration in Spain, and her physical presence was mandatory.

While setting aside the special court's order, the high court said if Mukerjea wished to perform these works from India, the statutory authorities back home would extend her necessary support with the assistance of the Embassy of Spain and the UK.
Mukerjea was arrested in August 2015 after the murder of Bora came to light. She was granted bail by the Supreme Court in May 2022. She has denied the allegations.
Bora, 24, was allegedly strangled to death in a car by Mukerjea, her then-driver Shyamvar Rai, and former husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012 in Mumbai. Her mortal remains were then burned in a forest in the neighbouring Raigad district, according to the prosecution.
Bora was Mukerjea's daughter from her previous relationship.

The Bombay High Court Wednesday said it cannot grant bail to former media baron Peter Mukerjea, an accused in the killing of his step-daughter Sheena Bora, but directed jail authorities to take him for his post-operation cardiac rehabilitation sessions.

A vacation bench of Justice Riyaz Chagla said it was not inclined to order the release of Mukerjea at the Asian Heart Institute, where he underwent bypass surgery, submitted in a report to a special CBI court last month that he has recovered from the operation.

"I am, however, inclined to grant limited protection to the applicant (Mukerjea). It will be appropriate to permit the applicant to undergo post-operation cardiac rehabilitation sessions and physiotherapy at the Asian Heart Institute," Justice Chagla said in the order.

"The applicant shall be taken to the hospital under police escort for 26 sessions, as prescribed by the Asian Heart Institute," the court said.

Mukerjea last week approached the high court, seeking interim bail on medical ground. His lawyer Shrikant Shivade argued that Mukerjea was sent to jail without letting him undergo the post-operative care.

"Without the post-operation cardiac rehabilitation sessions and physiotherapy, he (Mukerjea) will die. Jail is not a proper place to be kept in after undergoing bypass surgery," he argued on Wednesday.

CBI counsel Ejaz Khan opposed the plea and relied on the Asian Heart Institute's report, which said Mukerjea was being discharged from the hospital as he had recovered from the surgery.

"The jail authorities shall take him (Mukerjea) to the hospital for the post-operation cardiac sessions. He need not be released on bail for this purpose," Khan argued.

Mukerjea has been in jail since his arrest in November 2015 for his alleged involvement in the killing of Sheena Bora, his wife Indrani Mukerjea's daughter from her previous relationship.

"We were seeking bail on the medical grounds. We argued in the court that after the bypass surgery, sending him back to the jail would be dangerous as he would be prone to infections," Advocate Shivkant Shivade had told ANI over the phone.

Special CBI Judge JC Jagdale did not accept the arguments and turned down the plea. On March 17, Mukherjea&nbsp;was admitted to the JJ Hospital after he complained of chest pain.

On April 4, a Special CBI court rejected the bail plea filed by Peter Mukerjea. "We were seeking bail on the medical grounds. We argued in the court that after the bypass surgery, sending him back to the jail would be dangerous as he would be prone to infections," Advocate Shivkant Shivade had told ANI over the phone. Special CBI Judge JC Jagdale did not accept the arguments and turned down the plea. On March 17, Mukherjea was admitted to the JJ Hospital after he complained of chest pain. Peter, who is currently lodged in Authur Road jail, is accused of murdering his daughter Sheena Bora over a financial dispute in 2012. The crime came to the fore three years later, in 2015, for which Peter was charged for conspiracy. Mukerjea, who was lodged at the Arthur Road Jail in Central Mumbai, had been complaining of chest pain for the last few days, a police official said.

On Saturday evening, he again suffered from severe pain in the chest following which the prison medical staff checked him and rushed him to the J J Hospital, he said.

"Mukerjea was admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening for chest pain. The patient's condition is stable and he is undergoing treatment," J J Hospital's medical superintendent Dr Sanjay Surase said.

The CBI told a special court here earlier this month that Mukerjea is the "silent killer" of Sheena Bora, the daughter of his wife and former media executive Indrani Mukerjea from a previous relationship.

The April 2012 murder of Sheena Bora (24) came to light in August 2015 when Indrani Mukerjea's driver Shyamvar Rai spilled the beans after being arrested in another case.

Indrani Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, Rai and Peter Mukerjea were subsequently arrested in the case. Rai later became an approver and was pardoned.

The CBI has claimed a financial dispute led to the killing of Sheena Bora.

Former finance minister P Chidambaram was questioned by the CBI for nearly four hours today in connection with alleged irregularities in clearances to foreign investments in INX media during his tenure.

The agency has alleged irregularities in the clearance of foreign investment in INX media, a venture promoted by former media baron Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani, both probed by the CBI in connection with the murder of their daughter Sheena Bora, sources said.

After coming out of CBI headquarters here, Chidambaram said he had appeared before the CBI and the FIR did not contain any allegations against him.

"Questions and answers were based on the files of FIPB. Hence there was little to add to the record," the Congress leader said on Twitter.

Chidambaram's alleged role has come under the scanner of investigating agencies in connection with the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance of Rs 305 crore given to INX media.

The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15 last year for alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the finance minister during the UPA-I government.

INX Media case: CBI grills Chidambaram for close to 4 hours, he says 'little to add'

Indrani Mukerjea, one of the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, told the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court today that she fears for her life.

"I fear for my life, I have not given my statement to IG Prisons. I confirm that I have not spoken to anyone," Mukerjea told the court.

Indrani's statement comes two weeks after she was hospitalised in JJ Hospital for an alleged drug overdose. She has been lodged in Mumbai's Byculla jail for allegedly killing her daughter, Sheena Bora.

Mukerjea and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna were arrested in August 2015 along with her former driver Shyamvar Rai. Indrani's current husband Peter Mukerjea was arrested in November the same year.

The latest development in the case was on Wednesday when Mukerjea's personal assistant Kajal Sharma deposed before the CBI court that she forged Sheena Bora's signature on her resignation letter after Indrani had told her that her daughter was in the United States and had no Internet there to submit the resignation.

On April 24, 2012, 24-year-old Sheena was abducted and killed; her body was found in a forest in adjoining Raigad district.

Indrani Mukerjea, was earlier accused by Peter and driver Shyamvar Rai - who has turned witness, told the CBI Special Court that Indrani wanted to kill Sheena and her stepson Rahul for hampering her public image by referring to her as their mother.&nbsp;

She was also against Rahul&#39;s relationship with Sheena and made a detailed plan for their murder, Rai informed in court.&nbsp;

According to his statement, Indrani had assured him to pay for his child&#39;s education and medical aid for his family and also gave him a job. She also paid him, for helping her with the murder.

He added that she informed him that a person from Kolkata will do the needful and that he has nothing to worry, these conversations were made on Skype, Rai said.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, Indrani wrote a hand-written statement asking for Peters call records from January 2012 to December 2015.

&ldquo;I am convinced that if we are able to obtain the CDR of Peter, we will be in a better position to ascertain if Peter and other persons were involved in the disappearance of my daughter Sheena and there will be more clarity if Peter and other persons have a role in framing me,&quot; it said.

&ldquo;I have strong reasons to believe that Peter Mukerjea, with the assistance of other persons, including (accused turned approver) Shyamwar Rai may have conspired and abducted my daughter Sheena in 2012 and made her untraceable and subsequently destroyed evidence,&rdquo; her statement said seeking if she had been manipulated by Rai and her husband.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&ldquo;I offer my sincere gratitude to your honour for your kindness and endeavor to provide justice to my daughter, Sheena, who may have lost her life on account of greed, betrayal, jealousy, lust, and ill-will of persons whom she dearly loved and trusted,&rdquo; she said in her statement to the court.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, Indrani had told the court of her intentions to divorce Peter, reports said.&nbsp;

At present, Rai is being cross-examined by the defense and has been on the stand since July.

Sheena&nbsp;was murdered on April 24, 2012, allegedly by Indrani, ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Rai in conspiracy with Peter.

Sheena&#39;s body was disposed of on April 25, 2012, at a deserted spot Pen-Khopoli Road in Raigad, reports said.&nbsp;

Peter involved in disappearance of my daughter Sheena, says Indrani

The CBI today (August 28) questioned former finance minister P Chidambaram&#39;s son Karti for the second time in a corruption case of alleged clearance given to a media group owned by Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani for bringing foreign funds into their venture, CBI sources said.

Karti arrived at the CBI headquarters here at around&nbsp;11.30am.

Three suspected associates of Karti, Bhaskar Raman, Ravi Vishwanathan and Mohanan Rakesh are also being questioned today in connection with the case,&nbsp;the sources said.

The agency is examining him in connection with a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to media group INX Media for receiving funds from Mauritius when his father P Chidambaram was the Union finance minister.

The sources said a firm &quot;indirectly controlled&quot; by Karti received money from INX Media, run by the Mukerjeas, who are currently in jail, charged with the murder of Indrani&#39;s daughter.

The CBI had also questioned Karti on August 23.

P Chidambaram had earlier issued a strong statement in response to CBI&#39;s FIR against Karti, saying the government was using the CBI and other agencies to target his son.

The FIPB approval was granted in &quot;hundreds of cases&quot;, the senior Congress leader had said.

The CBI today (August 28) questioned former finance minister P Chidambaram's son Karti for the second time in a corruption case of alleged clearance given to a media group owned by Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani for bringing foreign funds into their venture, CBI sources said. Karti arrived at the CBI headquarters here at around 11.30am. Three suspected associates of Karti, Bhaskar Raman, Ravi Vishwanathan and Mohanan Rakesh are also being questioned today in connection with the case, the sources said. The agency is examining him in connection with a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to media group INX Media for receiving funds from Mauritius when his father P Chidambaram was the Union finance minister. The sources said a firm "indirectly controlled" by Karti received money from INX Media, run by the Mukerjeas, who are currently in jail, charged with the murder of Indrani's daughter. The CBI had also questioned Karti on August 23. P Chidambaram had earlier issued a strong statement in response to CBI's FIR against Karti, saying the government was using the CBI and other agencies to target his son. The FIPB approval was granted in "hundreds of cases", the senior Congress leader had said.

The Mumbai Sessions Court on Tuesday charged media barons Indrani Mukerjea and&nbsp;her husband Peter Mukerjea and Indrani&#39;s&nbsp;ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna for murdering her daughter Sheena Bora.&nbsp;

Indrani told the court she was being framed and wanted to divorce Peter Mukerjea, NDTV reported. The judge told her to follow that course of action in a family court.

The court charged the accused with murder, conspiracy and destruction of evidence.&nbsp;

It also charged Indrani and Sanjeev with attempt to murder, for allegedly trying to kill her son Mikhail, Sheena&#39;s brother.&nbsp;

Sheena and Mikhail were her children from her first marriage.&nbsp;

India&#39;s national investigation agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation had accused Indrani and her ex-husband of killing Sheena because of her relationship with Rahul, Peter&#39;s son from an earlier marriage.

However, special public prosecutors handling the case said that the murder was carried out for property. Indrani feared that if Sheena married Rahul, her other daughter Vidhie will not get Peter&#39;s property.&nbsp;

The prosecutors also alleged that Peter was aware of the crime. He was Rahul&#39;s father and yet he did not take any heed Rahul&#39;s concerns when Sheena went missing. &nbsp;

The shocking murder grabbed headlines after Indrani&#39;s driver was arrested in 2015 for illegal possession of a weapon. He confessed to the police that he had helped Indrani commit the crime.&nbsp;

The police found Sheena&#39;s half burnt body in a forest in Maharashtra&#39;s Raigad district.

Indrani Mukerjea, who had told her friends and family that Sheena was her younger sister, had tried to pass off her disappearance by saying Sheena had moved to the US to study and then work.

The driver was not charged as he became an approver for the CBI.&nbsp;

The accused pleaded not guilty and said would face trial.&nbsp;

The trial will begin on February 1.&nbsp;
