American financial behemoth Wells Fargo has decided to pay $3.7 billion to settle loan violations, making it the largest fine to be levelled against a bank.

The bank has been accused of harming consumers by charging illegal fees and interest on auto loans and mortgages, and incorrectly applying overdraft fees against savings and checking accounts.

On Tuesday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) ordered Wells to repay $2 billion to consumers and enacted a $1.7 billion penalty against the bank.

The bureau blamed the bank’s bad behaviour that impacted more than 16 million customers.

“Put simply: Wells Fargo is a corporate recidivist that puts one out of three Americans at risk for potential harm,” said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra, in a call with reporters.

He said that the bank’s behaviour prompted the regulators to take additional actions against Wells Fargo that go beyond the $3.7 billion in fines and penalties.

In a statement, Wells Fargo CEO Charles Scharf said that the agreement with the CFPB is part of an effort to "transform operating practices at Wells Fargo and to put these issues behind us.”

“Our top priority is to continue to build a risk and control infrastructure that reflects the size and complexity of Wells Fargo and run the company in a more controlled, disciplined way,” Scharf said,

Wells Fargo has been repeatedly sanctioned by US regulators for breaching the consumer protection laws going back to 2016, when employees opened millions of accounts illegally in order to meet unrealistic sales goals.

Despite the warnings, the bank only intensified its malpractices after it was found to be in violation of other parts of consumer protection law, including in its auto and mortgage lending businesses.

In 2018, Wells Fargo coughed up $1 billion penalty for widespread consumer law violations, the largest against a bank for such violations at the time.

Chelsea were crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions for the first time as Kai Havertz struck home a penalty deep into extra time to break the hearts of Brazilian club Palmeiras on Saturday.

Havertz, scorer of the winning goal in last season's European Champions League final, was as cool as a cucumber as he converted in the 117th minute after Palmeiras's Luan had conceded the spot-kick with a handball.

Palmeiras's misery was complete when Luan was sent off in stoppage time for a desperate tackle on Havertz.

Chelsea has now won every major club trophy since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich took control in 2003.

In May, Deputy Justice Minister Umaru Napoleon Koroma announced that the government would move to ban the death penalty to "uphold the fundamental human rights of&nbsp;Sierra&nbsp;Leoneans".&nbsp;

During a lively debate in the 146-legislature on Friday,&nbsp;Mathew Nyumah, the parliamentary leader of the ruling&nbsp;Sierra&nbsp;Leone&nbsp;People's Party, urged MPs to vote for abolition.&nbsp;

"Please understand this is something we are sacrificing to meet international best practice," he said.&nbsp;

President Julius Maada Bio must still sign off on the abolition voted by parliament before it becomes law.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The president thanked citizens MPs and rights groups in a statement on social media after the vote, saying they had "steadfastly stood with us to make history".

The vote in&nbsp;Sierra&nbsp;Leone&nbsp;comes as the use of capital punishment has been falling across the African continent, and more countries have been outlawing the practice.

Falling executions

Sierra&nbsp;Leone's 1991 constitution allows the use of the death penalty for aggravated robbery, murder, treason and mutiny.

However, the last executions in the country were carried out in 1998, when 24 military officers were put to death after a coup attempt the year before.

The diamond-rich but poor former British colony was ravaged by a 1991-2002 civil war that claimed 120,000 lives.&nbsp;

A truth and reconciliation commission set up in 2005 to investigate the brutal conflict recommended abolishing the death penalty, calling it "an affront to civilised society".

But the authorities in the nation of 7.5 million people resisted immediately abolishing capital punishment, and courts condemned 84 people to death between 2016 and 2020, according to the UN.

With the parliament vote,&nbsp;Sierra&nbsp;Leone&nbsp;is set to become the latest African country to abolish the death penalty.&nbsp;

Malawi banned capital punishment in April, for example, and Chad scrapped the practice last year. &nbsp;

According to Amnesty International, 108 countries had completely abolished the death penalty by the end of 2020, while 144 had abolished it in law or in practice.&nbsp;

Both executions and death penalties also fell across sub-Saharan Africa last year, the rights group said.&nbsp;

Recorded death sentences fell by six percent, from&nbsp;325&nbsp;in 2019 to&nbsp;305 last year, while executions were down 36 percent, falling from 25 in 2019 to 16 in 2020.&nbsp;

The application firstly said that the Commonwealth was acting outside its powers and secondly, Health Minister Greg Hunt's declaration was in breach of an implied freedom to return home, ABC news reported.&nbsp;

Newman is represented by Bradley and Ward, who would work as pro bono to overturn the temporary ban. Pro bono generally refers to services that are rendered by a professional for free or at a lower cost for the public good.&nbsp;

Pakistan's Supreme Court had terminated the deal in 2013. The mining company said that it had invested over $220 million on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-to-pay-foreign-firm-6-billion-over-mine-closure-world-bank-235889">Reko Diq</a>.

The company is still "willing to strike a deal with Pakistan," Tethyan board chair William Hayes said in a statement.&nbsp;

But, added that "It would continue protecting its commercial and legal interests until the dispute was over."

International Court slaps $5 billion penalty on Pakistan in Reko Diq case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday levied penalties on the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and its former chief N. Srinivasan among others over alleged violations in Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) regulations in the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Apart from an 82.66 Cr fine on the BCCI, and an 11.53 Cr fine on Srinivasan, penalties have also been imposed upon the former chairman of Indian Premier League, Lalit Modi (10.65 Cr), former BCCI treasurer MP Pandove (9.72 Cr) and the State Bank of Travancore (7 Cr).

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday levied penalties on the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and its former chief N. Srinivasan among others over alleged violations in Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) regulations in the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Apart from an 82.66 Cr fine on the BCCI, and an 11.53 Cr fine on Srinivasan, penalties have also been imposed upon the former chairman of Indian Premier League, Lalit Modi (10.65 Cr), former BCCI treasurer MP Pandove (9.72 Cr) and the State Bank of Travancore (7 Cr). The penalties amount to a total of 121.66 Cr. In March this year, former IPL Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sundar Raman and former IPL commissioner Chirayu Amin had appeared before the Special Director of the ED in Mumbai for cross-examination by Modi`s lawyers in the case.

A Bangladesh court on Monday upheld death sentences for 139 soldiers over the massacre of 74 people including 57 senior army officers during a 2009 mutiny, the attorney general said.

&quot;The verdict has upheld the death sentence for 139 people,&quot; Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters after the High Court handed down its judgment in Dhaka.

&quot;Nowhere in the world did anything happen like the way those 57 top army officers were killed,&quot; Alam said.

The sentences will be appealed again to the Supreme Court, which by law has the final say in all capital punishment cases.

In 2013 a court sentenced 152 soldiers to death for the grisly killings in which dozens of officers were shot, hacked to death or burnt alive before being dumped in sewers or shallow graves.

One of those handed the death penalty died in custody, eight others had sentences commuted to life imprisonment and four were acquitted, Alam said.

The sentences were condemned at the time by the UN rights chief, who expressed alarm at such a heavy punishment meted out in a mass trial.

The mutineers stole thousands of weapons in February 2009 before going on a two-day killing spree at a barracks.

Bangladesh has a history of military coups and the massacre threatened the newly-elected government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which responded by arresting thousands of suspects.
