Parthiv Patel, the man whose direct hit gave Bangalore an improbable one-run win over Chennai, said he was left quite surprised when Mahendra Singh Dhoni missed hitting the last ball of the cliffhanger.

Patel wasn't expecting a marauding Dhoni to miss Umesh Yadav's slower delivery before his direct throw sealed it for the home team on Sunday night.

Dhoni scored 24 off the first five balls of the final over before missing the last ball. A scramble for one run ended in Parthiv's direct throw leaving Shardul Thakur short of his crease.

"We honestly wanted him (Dhoni) to hit through the off-side on the shorter side of the ground. If he had hit it on the leg-side, there were two runs because I don't think the way he runs, there was any chance of stopping those two," an elated Patel said at the post-match press conference.

"So we wanted (Umesh) to bowl slower and outside the off-stump and surprisingly he missed it. I wasn't expecting him to miss it but surprisingly he missed it," he said.

Patel said if Dhoni is around then 70 to 80 runs in the last five overs is always gettable at the Chinnaswamy.

"Playing in Bangalore or Mumbai, you know that 70 runs in the last five overs is gettable. You need at least have 80-90 runs to get in last five overs to defend. So, we wanted to squeeze him.

"We wanted to bowl as many dot balls to him as possible, and put pressure on other batsmen because everybody knows how MS is. He wanted the game to go down to last three-four overs and he almost won the game," said Patel.

The wicketkeeper-batsman scored his second half-century of the season and said that coach Gary Kirsten's advice of choosing the correct bowlers was key to his success.

"Before the game started, I was talking to Gary and he said 'you don't have worry of anything you need to choose your bowlers' and that is exactly what I did," said Patel.

He is happy to open the batting as he can use the Powerplay overs to his advantage.

"Honestly, it is great to be playing in the opening slot with Virat and AB coming in at number three. Actually, I don't have to do much. I try to make sure that I hit couple of boundaries and try and rotate the strike.

"You know, I have been working hard on my game. I have been there in Australia for a couple of months...I have been working hard and I am quite happy with the way I am batting," he said.

Siraj came into the spotlight last year when Hyderabad spent a mind-boggling Rs 2.6 crore after his impressive run in the domestic circuit. He was rewarded with a national team call-up later on.&nbsp

Ahead of the 2018 IPL season, Bangalore roped in the youngster for the same amount.

However, the 24-year-old pacer has had a minimal impact this season, having picked up only four wickets in six matches for his side.

Yuzvendra Chahal, Parthiv Patel, Mandeep Singh were also present.

Watch: Virat Kohli, Bangalore players attend dinner party at Mohammed Siraj's house

This will be the first time when Hyderabad and Bangalore will come face to face at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018.

While Hyderabad is leading the table with 14 points, Bangalore is struggling to even make it for the play-off and hence are at the third place from the bottom with just six points.

Let us take a look at the players expected to perform in today's big clash:

1. Rashid Khan - In his last match against Delhi, Rashid took two crucial wickets, which made him the 'Man of the Match'. He is also two wickets away from wearing the 'Purple Cap'. The Afghanistan tweaker is capable of breaking any standing partnership, making him the player to watch out for today.

2. Umesh Yadav - Considering his previous game against Chennai, Yadav dismissed Shane Watson and Suresh Raina to put Bangalore over the 'Yellow Brigade'. But eventually, they lost the match. He has been in good form from last few games and is expected to do the same and knock out Hyderabad batsmen. And, not to forget that one more wicket today and he will get the 'Purple Cap'.

3. Alex Hales - Hyderabad picked Hales as their new replacement for David Warner for this season of IPL. He has played two matches so far scoring 90 runs. In his previous game against Delhi, he scored 31-ball-45 which included three fours and three sixes. Being picked up at his base price, the opener has a lot more to offer to his franchise.

4. Parthiv Patel - Patel got his first chance in IPL 2018 in the previous game against Chennai and he smashed a brilliant half-century to prove his worth and calibre. His inning was a signal to Bangalore and warning to other franchises that he is capable of playing many such knocks. The Bangalore opener and wicket-keeper is definitely a player to watch out for today.

5. Kane Williamson - The backbone of Hyderabad is one of the most successful skippers in the ongoing league so far. With his team being the table-toppers, he definitely fulfilled his duties as a captain. When required he has stood up for his team as a batsman too. In nine matches he has scored 354 runs which include four half-centuries. Even in his previous game, Hyderabad skipper remained unbeaten and ensured victory for his side. Also, he stands at number seven in the race for the 'Orange Cap'.

Being at top of the table, it won't be unfair at all to say that Hyderabad has an upper hand in today's game. While Bangalore have to play a different game altogether to beat the current number one team.

IPL 2018: Players expected to perform in Hyderabad vs Bangalore clash

Virat Kohli-led Bangalore fell like nine pins after the powerplay as the team ended their innings at just 127, their lowest total in this year's IPL.

At one point Bangalore were 47 for the loss of one wicket, but then lost Kohli, AB and Mandeep to spin in the space of five overs.

Parthiv Patel, who played his first game in IPL 2018, smashed a half-century and also became the top scorer for the team by making 53 runs off 41 balls.&nbsp

The team could have ended their innings with the lowest score in this year's league before Tim Southee came to their rescue.&nbsp

He made 36 runs in 26 balls to save his team from drowning and set a decent score on board.&nbsp

Apart from Patel and Southee, no other player scored in two digits.&nbsp

Skipper Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers fell succumbed to Chennai's spin attack as Bangalore were put into bat at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, on Saturday.

Kohli was clean bowled by Ravindra Jadeja while de Villiers gave away his wicket to Harbhajan Singh.

Kohli was departed for eight runs and de Villiers made just one.

Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and opted to bowl.

Chennai is coming off from a tragic defeat against Kolkata in their previous encounter and must have worked on their loopholes and rectified the errors in order to earn two crucial points.

On the other hand, team Bangalore is high on spirit as they have won the previous match against Mumbai.

The competition between the teams which are placed at the fourth, fifth and sixth position at the league's table is very tough now.&nbsp

Chennai have lost its two previous clashes out of three and looked a bit off but with a well-balanced team, it requires just one win to prove caliber of the entire team.

On the other hand, confidence Virat Kohli is leading the batting department from the front but still, team Bangalore is dealing with the problems of bowling unit, which has been very expensive especially in death overs.

The current team of Chennai is very sorted and any change at this moment is not required.

On the other hand, the good news for Bangalore is that their star player, AB de Villiers is fit and back in the squad but opener Quinton de Kock has flown back home due to some personal reasons and skipper Virat Kohli might replace him by Manan Vohra.

In the absence of wicket-keeper, the best replacement for team Bangalore is Parthiv Patel.

IPL 2018: Chennai bowlers restrict Bangalore to 127 runs

Parthiv Patel scored a crucial fourth-innings 143 to help his team Gujarat beat heavyweights Mumbai by five wickets to lift their maiden Ranji Trophy title on Saturday.

Chasing 313 in the fourth innings, Gujarat were tottering at 89 for three before Gujarat skipper Patel and Manprit Juneja stitched a 116-run partnership to thwart Mumbai's attempt to win their 42nd title.

Patel had a memorable summit clash as he scored a 90 in the first innings, pouched seven on the field and capped it off with a 143.

Patel, who was adjudged the man of the match, said: "It (winning the Ranji Trophy) was a dream we collectively saw at the beginning of the season."

He also praised his young team, who were without paceman Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel, in the final for "putting their hand up in big games".

The last few months have been very successful for the baby-faced Patel, who became cricket's youngest test wicketkeeper when he made his debut as a 17-year-old against England in 2002.

He ended his test side exile after more than eight years in November when he was recalled for the last three matches against a touring England, replacing injured regular Wriddhiman Saha behind the stumps.

He was impressive with the bat upon his recall, scoring two half-centuries as India won the five-match series 4-0.

Gujarat had started the match strongly by bowling out Mumbai for 228 in the first innings, getting a 100-run lead when they came to bat. But Mumbai, who have been the dominant team in the domestic championship for decades, pulled themselves back in the match by setting their opponents a stiff target to chase.

Mumbai, spearheaded by Abhishek Nayar's swashbuckling 90 and Shreyas Iyer's 82, gave the reigning champions another tilt at the trophy.

But Patel's century, who was helped by Mumbai's shoddy catching, laid rest to Mumbai's dream of lifting another title. This was Mumbai's just fifth loss in 46 Ranji Trophy final appearances, the last time being way back in 1990-91 when Haryana beat them by 2 runs.

Scorecard: Mumbai 1st innings 228 (P Shaw 71), Gujarat 1st innings 328 (Patel 90, M Juneja 77, S Thakur 4/84), Mumbai 2nd innings 411 (S Iyer 82, A Nayar 91, C Gaja 6/121), Gujarat 2nd innings 313/5 (Patel 143). Gujarat won by 5 wickets.
