India's Lakshya Sen went down to Malaysia's Zii Jia Lee in the badminton men's singles bronze medal match at the Paris Olympics 2024 edition on Monday (Aug 6). After a defeat against Denmark's Viktor Alexson in the semifinals, on Sunday (Aug 4), many still had high hopes from Lakshya. However, the 22-year-old failed to seize the momentum and lost 21-13, 16-21, 11-21 in the bronze medal match. Although he had a 4-1 head-to-head lead over the Malaysian prior to the game, Lee held his nerves and overcame a bad start to end with bronze.

Just like against Alexson, Lakshya made a fitting start against Lee. The Indian shuttler seemed to have moved past his semifinal defeat and took the opening game 21-13. He didn't give any chance to his opponent and looked destined for success. However, the script changed soon thereafter. Lee revived in style, pushed Lakshya to all corners and showed impressive speed and agility. To add to Lakshya's woes, he picked an elbow injury which further dented his momentum as he eventually went behind in the contest.

Notably, Lakshya -- in his maiden Olympic appearance during Paris 2024 -- missed out on joining an elite group of Indian badminton players with Olympic medals. The list comprises PV Sindhu (two) and Saina Nehwal (one). However, the youngster has shown immense grit and determination throughout his campaign, while competing with some of the best in men's singles (receiving high praise from Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Alexson). The talented shuttler will be determined to make a strong comeback in the 2028 edition, to be held in Los Angeles.

After the defeat in the bronze medal match, Lakshya told Jio Cinema, "I had my chances in the second set. I could’ve definitely done better. Credit to him, he played better. I think I came well prepared for this game. It has been quite a tough week overall. I was ready to give my 100 per cent."

On playing with an injury, he stated, "In between the points, the blood was on the floor. Sometimes, it takes away the momentum. Just having that break in the game."

Lakshya impressed one and all with moments of brilliance against Alexson in the semifinal clash on Sunday, prompting the Denmark player to laud his young opponent. Post his semifinal win, Alexson said, "Lakshya is an amazing player. He has shown in this Olympics that he is a very, very strong competitor and I am sure in four years from now, he will be one of the favorites to win the gold."

On Thursday (Aug 1), curtains came down on British star Andy Murray's illustrious tennis career after his doubles loss in the ongoing Paris Olympics. The mega event was Murray's swansong and the veteran bowed out after his partner Dan Evans and he lost 2-6, 4-6 to the American duo of Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz. With injuries halting his progress, Murray competed in the doubles (something he also did in Wimbledon 2024 after the first-round), however, his journey wasn't long enough.

After the defeat, Murray said, "I'm proud of my career, my achievements and what I put into the sport. Obviously it was emotional because it's the last time I will play a competitive match. But I am genuinely happy just now. I'm happy with how it finished."

HERE IS RELIVING SOME CAREER HIGHS OF ANDY MURRAY POST HIS RETIREMENT

1) In 2012, Murray broke a decades-long drought for British players by becoming the first British Grand Slam singles champion since Virginia Wade in 1977. He got to the feat after beating Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-set US Open final.

2) In 2013, Murray became the first-ever British male to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry (1936). The achievement elevated his stature in tennis and termed him a national hero.

3) The Scot player is the only man in history to win two Olympic singles gold. He won his maiden gold by beating Roger Federer in London Olympics in 2012 and followed it up with another gold in 2016 in Rio, going past Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro.

4) In ATP Masters 1000 events, the 37-year-old Murray has won as many as 14 titles at this elite level, ranking fifth in the series' history. Only the likes of Novak Djokovic (40), Rafael Nadal (36), Roger Federer (28), and Andre Agassi (17) have more titles.

5) In addition, Murray led Great Britain to its maiden Davis Cup title in 2015 after a gap of 79 years.

Murray, the three-time Grand Slam champion, thus, retires on a high despite his recent struggles (marred with injury concerns since 2019). To have prolonged his career till 2024, despite playing with a metal hip since five years and suffering an ankle damage earlier this year, is testament to his grit, determination and fighting spirit.

While the 15,000 crowd at the La Defense Arena belted out a rousing rendition of La Marseillaise during the medal ceremonies, a smiling Marchand looked calm as he soaked up the adulation.

"Nadalcaraz", as they have become known since joining forces, were given raucous support on a rammed Court Philippe Chatrier, the din sounding more like a soccer arena as the fans roared on the Spaniards.

When 2023 French Open doubles winner Krajicek served for the match and went break points down there was pandemonium inside the arena with the umpire struggling to maintain order.

The American fourth seeds somehow kept their cool though and when Krajicek blasted down an ace on match point it was met by almost silent disbelief as the umpire got off her chair to confirm the ball had kissed the white tape.

Nadal began the Games carrying the Olympic flame in the opening ceremony, but ends it without the third gold medal he craved on what could be his final bow on the Parisian clay. As Nadal trudged off alongside the man who has replaced him as a force in tennis, it felt like the end as fans snapped photos on their phones.

"For me personally it was disappointing to not bring back a medal for Spain," Nadal said. "I tried my best in every single minute I was on court but it was not enough. "I don't know what's going to happen in the future, but if that's the last time I enjoyed it."

Twenty two-times Grand Slam champion Nadal had been coy about when he will end his career but it seems a matter of time. Asked if he would play at the U.S. Open after the Olympics, he said: "I can't give you a clear answer, I need some time but for me it looks difficult."

SPECIAL ATMOSPHERE

Krajicek said it had been special to be part of the atmosphere, even if he played a huge role in ruining the script. "To be in that kind of environment. You've got to soak it all in," he said. "I mean, the energy was through the roof."

In truth Nadal and Alcaraz could have few complaints as they came up against a well-drilled partnership with the 40-year-old Ram, a four-times Grand Slam men's doubles champion, superb throughout with razor-sharp net play. In their two previous matches in Paris, Nadal and Alcaraz had ridden a wave of support, coming up with some inspired play to raise hopes that they could go all the way.

But this time the 21-year-old Alcaraz, who earlier on Wednesday reached the singles quarter-finals, lacked his usual spark and served consecutive double faults to virtually hand the Americans the opening set.

There was no coming back this time and Alcaraz dropped serve to love at 3-3 -- the Spaniards' frustration showing as they disputed a line call after a sizzling Ram winner. "I enjoyed every single second that we played together," Alcaraz said. "Disappointed as we wanted to keep going."

On Thursday (Aug 1), the Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian team's unbeaten run in Paris Olympics 2024 edition came to an end. After beating New Zealand and Ireland and managing a draw versus Argentina, India faced 2018 World Cup winners Belgium in a crucial Pool B game. Despite an early 1-0 lead, Indian men's hockey team lost 2-1, after a lacklustre defensive performance from the side.

The contest began with India's Abhishek Nain scoring a goal in the second-quarter. At the halfway mark, India were still 1-0 ahead but Belgium managed a turnaround in the last two quarters courtesy of their relentless attacking game and grit. India's woes were evident from the fact that they conceded as many as 11 penalty corners in the game, while Belgium gave away only three. As a result, Belgium's Thibeau Stockbroekx (33rd) and John-John Dohmen (44th) chipped in with a goal each to take their side to a 2-1 lead.

Social media reacts to Swapnil Kusale’s maiden bronze medal win as shooters shine at Paris Olympics 2024

The Paris Olympics 2024 edition continues to make news. An image from the mega event is making heads turn on social media platforms. Most of the sports lovers have already seen the image. A news agency photographer named Jerome Brouillet, working with AFP, clicked Brazilian Olympic surfer Gabriel Medina paddle into one of the day’s biggest waves at one of the world’s heaviest surf breaks during the men's surfing Round 3 on Monday (July 29). Little did Brouillet know that his picture, where Medina is kicking out of the wave after a ride that led to a record Olympics score, in Tahiti, would be regarded as a global sensation.

Notably, Brouillet was on a boat in the channel — an area of deeper, calmer water to the side of the wave without a clear line of sight of the initial action. He, however, was in prime spot waiting for the Brazilian to "kick out" -- exit the wave face at the conclusion of his run when Brouillet clicked him. The moment of capture is so brilliant that it shows the surfer leaping from his surfboard and raising his finger in celebration of his Olympic triumph, with his surfboard pointing skyward parallelly.

As a result, even Medina shared the click courtesy an Instagram post.

Here is the VIRAL post: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gabriel Medina (@gabrielmedina) × Also read: Paris Games: Not Manu Bhakar but Norman Pritchard was first to win 2 Olympics medals for India in one edition After the photo went viral, Brouillet said, as per a report in News18, "Every photographer is waiting for that.
Some 1.4 billion euros were spent on infrastructure building ahead of the Olympics, including for the cleanup of the Seine river.

Presence of E. coli in the water means sewage contamination. Some types of this bacteria can be harmful to health and cause diarrhea.

There are plans to relocate marathon swimming events scheduled on August 8-9 if the water level does not improve.

Earlier measurements had shown that E. coli levels were at 985 units per 100 millilitres which was above the regulated cap.

On Tuesday (July 30), India eased past Ireland courtesy of a brace from skipper Harmanpreet Singh as the men's hockey team remain unbeaten in the Paris Olympics 2024 edition. After a 3-2 win over New Zealand and a 1-1 stalemate versus Argentina, the Men in Blue went past the Irish line-up without dropping much sweat in a crucial Pool B encounter in the Games. Paris Games: Netizens HAIL Manu Bhaker for HISTORIC FEAT after bronze in mixed 10m air pistol event

On Monday (July 29), India managed a 1-1 stalemate versus Argentina in their second group-stage clash in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 edition. Fresh from a 3-2 win over New Zealand, Harmanpreet Singh-led Men in Blue had a tough contest versus Argentina but managed to prevent a loss courtesy of a last-minute thrilling goal from skipper Harmanpreet in an important Pool B match at the Games. This became only the second instance of a draw between the two heavyweights, with the first occurrence dating back to 2004.

Talking about the contest, it was Argentina who took a 1-0 lead after a 0-0 scoreline at the halfway mark. Both teams tried their luck but a goal from Lucas Martinez saw his side go 1-0 up in the latter part of the second quarter. India failed to capitalise on many opportunities, especially by missing to convert a chance via penalty with just two minutes left in the third quarter. Argentina's defence proved resilient from the beginning of the match before India were blessed with another penalty corner in the end moments of the game, which was finally converted by Harmanpreet after three retakes of the PC. Here is the video of Harman's goal:

Ahead of the encounter, the Indian captain said, "I think our plan is to focus match by match. Today was Argentina, and now we will analyse Ireland, who are also a good team. No match will be easy, and we will need to work on every detail we can get."

Be it a field goal or a PC (Penalty Corner). Well, better late than never, because this was a very important match. Overall, we played really well...Team is playing very good. Both on the ball and off the ball, going into the opponent's circle...We are getting good chances, but yes, I think we need to improve our finishing." India will next lock horns with Ireland, i.e. a crucial and potential must-win match for Harmanpreet's side. Ahead of the encounter, the Indian captain said, "I think our plan is to focus match by match. Today was Argentina, and now we will analyse Ireland, who are also a good team. No match will be easy, and we will need to work on every detail we can get."

France's capital city is set to rock to a sporting beat on Saturday as the Olympic Games get under way in earnest on the back of an opening ceremony as dazzling as it was rainswept.

After a tumultuous Friday, which started with a pre-dawn attack by saboteurs on France's high-speed train network, the focus now turns to gold medals and sporting excellence.

No fewer than 14 medals will be up for grabs as day one promises action across multiple sports: four golds in swimming, two each in cycling, fencing, and judo, and one each in diving, skateboarding, shooting, and rugby sevens.

Flying start for swimming

The swimming gets off to a flying start at La Defense Arena where Australia's Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus bids to retain her 400 metres freestyle title against American Katie Ledecky, the 2016 Rio champion, and Canadian wunderkind Summer McIntosh.

Coming three years after Titmus beat Ledecky in a thriller at the Tokyo Games, the final could be Paris's candidate for "race of the century" if all three qualify.

With former world champions Sam Short and Elijah Winnington in the men's 400 freestyle and a peerless women's 4x100 freestyle relay team, Australia could emerge with three out of four gold medals in the pool on day one.

With Caeleb Dressel in the driving seat, the United States will bid for a third successive gold in the men's 4x100 relay against strong challenges from the Australians and the Pan Zhanle-powered China team.

Road Cycling rolls into Paris

Over at the cycling, Italy's Filippo Ganna will go head-to-head with Belgium's prodigy Remco Evenepoel in a much-anticipated individual time trial, with Britain's Joshua Tarling the other top contender.

In the women's event, American Chloe Dygert is among the main favourites, having shown with her 2023 world title that she has recovered from Epstein-Barr virus diagnosed in early 2022, which was followed by heart surgery to treat accelerating beats.

Her main rivals will be Australia's Grace Brown and Britain's Anna Henderson, with the Netherlands' triple world champion Ellen van Dijk's form a big question mark after she broke her ankle in June.

Shooting to deliver first gold

The first gold medal of the Games is likely to be at the shooting range in the 10 metre Air Pistol Mixed Team event.

Over the next week or so, the United States will fancy their chances, with three-times gold medallist Vincent Hancock leading their charge.

All eyes on Fiji at Rugby seven

Fiji will hope to extend their stranglehold on the men's rugby sevens as they seek their third successive title, but there is an otherwise fresh look to the semi-final lineup at the Stade de France on Saturday.

The Fijians have won every match they have played since the sport was added to the Olympics in 2016 and will start as strong favourites to extend that remarkable streak against Australia, who are in the semis for the first time.

It is also new territory for France, who failed to even make the Tokyo event but came into their own Games on a high having won the new end-of-season Grand Final.

They play 2016 bronze medallists South Africa, who shocked New Zealand in the quarter-finals having sneaked into the competition as the final qualifiers by winning the repechage. The final will take place later on Saturday.

China headline diving

China are strong favourites in the diving, having bagged seven out of eight gold medals at the last two Olympics.

The Chinese duo of Chen Yiwen and Chang Yani, best friends and both first-time Olympians, have won the 3m synchronised event, the first diving gold up for grabs in Paris, in most world tournaments over the last couple of years.

Skateboarding gets underway

Relative Olympics newcomer skateboarding will mark its return to the Games with the men's street event being held at the Place de la Concorde.

Yuto Horigome will attempt to retain his title as he faces competition from the likes of U.S. skateboarder Njjah Huston and French hope Aurelien Giraud.

Other sports

Paris Olympics 2024: 14 gold medals up for grabs on Day 1 as Summer Games get underway

The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics was a starry night featuring back-to-back performances by A-listers such as Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and Aya Nakamura. However, a set of performances from drag queens is drawing significant criticism on social media.

At the Summer Olympics opening ceremony, a set of drag queens including famous ones like Nicky Doll, best known for competing on RuPaul's Drag Race season 12 walked the fashion/runway segment of the ceremony.

Other well-known queens like Paloma, winner of Drag Race France season 1, and Piche, from Drag Race France season 3, made notable appearances alongside other drag performers.

However, the segment at the Olympics opening ceremony which had aimed to be a big moment for queer and drag representation earned major criticism when the 18 performances came together at a table as they depicted Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting of the 'Last Supper'.

The segment in question shows the drag performers gathering at a table set against the backdrop of the Seine River and posing like Jesus and his Twelve Apostles in the painting.

The depiction triggered the masses, and what angered the audience most was a woman standing in the centre, wearing a blue dress with a large silver headdress resembling a halo, much like how Jesus is depicted in the painting.

Another segment drawing backlash involved a man, covered in blue paint, who appeared at the table. The person wore flowers and fruit with a weird beard. He was said to have been depicting the dish served at the meal.

After the backlash, The Paris Olympics committee said the performance was an “interpretation of the Greek God [of wine and festivity] Dionysus” to make “us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings,'' according to the New York Post.

Outrage on social media

The drag performance took the internet by storm with several A-listers and netizens seeing it as an "insult" to billions of Christians around the world.

"This is outrageous. Kicking off your event by replacing Jesus and the disciples with men in drag is unacceptable," American podcast host Clint Russel wrote.

Another wrote, ''What a hideous, aesthetically appalling, morally repugnant and overall disastrous @Olympics opening ceremony. Companies with strong affiliation to @france as a brand should be concerned. #FranceHasFallen.''

Outrage on social media The drag performance took the internet by storm with several A-listers and netizens seeing it as an "insult" to billions of Christians around the world. #FranceHasFallen.'' France, once a catholic country, just mocked The Last Supper on a world wide stage. Disgusting!!
