"Muslims continue to be targeted with impunity in many countries. Our shrines are being destroyed; our Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) insulted; the Holy Quran burnt – and all this in the name of freedom of speech," Khan said in his unsual demeanour, adding, "and the one country in the world today where, I am sad to say, the state sponsors Islamophobia, is India. The reason behind this is RSS ideology that unfortunately rules India today."

To this end, Khan urged the Assembly to declare an “International Day to Combat Islamophobia” and build a coalition to fight this scourge.

Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in London for treatment, is slated to virtually attend the opposition-led MPC scheduled to be held on Sunday.

The opposition parties decided to hold MPC as they wanted to formulate a strategy against the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government over bad governance, sugar and wheat scandals and inflation, Dawn news reported.

To this end, Gill tweeted: "How is it possible that a fugitive carries out political activities and gives speeches? The Sharif clan can only spew lies. They are such big liars that they also lie about [their] medical conditions."

On Thursday, the Pakistan High Commission in London received arrest warrants sent by the government for Nawaz.

The assistant registrar of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had directed the foreign secretary to ensure production of the former prime minister before the court on September 22.

Pakistan's deposed premier Nawaz Sharif is set to make a comeback in active politics following a year-long absence after PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari invited him to virtually attend the Opposition-led multiparty conference aimed at launching a protest movement against the Imran Khan-led government on Sunday.

Sharif, 70, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo, has been living in London since November last year after the Lahore High Court granted him permission to go abroad for four weeks for treatment.

The three-time premier, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar were convicted in the Avenfield properties case on July 6, 2018.

Sharif, who was deposed in 2017, was also sentenced to seven years in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case in December 2018. But, he was bailed out in both cases and also allowed to go to London for medical treatment.

He was given eight weeks to return but failed to come back due to health complications, according to his lawyer.

On Friday, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Zardari talked to Sharif over phone and invited him to virtually attend the Opposition-led All Parties Conference (APC) scheduled to be held on Sunday.

The APC will evolve a strategy to counter the government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) which, they said, has failed to address issues like price hike and poverty.

Quoting sources, The Express Tribune reported that the meeting will decide to go for a street movement. He said that every party wanted to send the government led by Prime Minister Khan packing, adding that approaches might be different but this is exactly what all parties are attending the APC for -- to agree on a unified approach.

"Just spoke to Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif. Enquired about his health. Also invited him to virtually attend opposition APC, hosted by PPP, on 20th September,"&nbsp;Bilawal said in a tweet.

Maryam, who is Sharif's political heir, tweeted back to thank the PPP leader.

However, the PML-N has not officially confirmed his participation but party Senator Musadik Malik told Samaa TV that Sharif would attend virtually and also address the APC.

Maryam Nawaz will also attend, he said.

Dawn newspaper also reported that the former prime minister would attend the conference.

Sharif's participation in the high-profile political conference, to be attended by all the top leaders of the opposition parties, would help to reinvigorate his party as well as fuel up anti-government struggle by the Opposition.

Sharif's decision to become active in politics coincided with the issuance of a non-bailable arrest warrant by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Pak's ex-PM Sharif mulling political comeback after year-long gap

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will embark on a two-day visit to Kuala Lumpur from Monday to placate the Malaysian leadership after he skipped a major summit of Muslim nations reportedly under pressure from Saudi Arabia.

The Pakistan Foreign Office on Sunday said "(PM) Khan is visiting Malaysia on February 3-4" on the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Khan will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Cabinet members and senior officials.

During the visit, the two heads of state would have tete-e-tete followed by delegation-level talks.

They will witness the signing of important agreements/MoUs and have joint press meets.

Prime Minister Khan will also address a think-tank event organised by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) of Malaysia.

"The prime minister's visit is another sign of robust engagement between Pakistan and Malaysia and the shared commitment to further fortify the strategic partnership between the two countries," said FO.

In line with a common vision, bilateral ties between the two countries have deepened in recent years in trade, investment, industry, defence, education and in various international forums, the FO said.

The FO said the prime minister will share with Mahathir his vision for Pakistan and his government's positive role in bringing regional and international peace . 
Khan's visit is being called a "damage control" exercise by local media.

Khan had confirmed Pakistan's participation in the December 19-21 summit hosted by the Malaysian prime minister but skipped the event at the 11th hour due to pressure exerted by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates - key financial backers of the cash-strapped country.

The summit in Kuala Lumpur was seen by the Saudis as an attempt to create a new bloc in the Muslim world that could become an alternative to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) led by the Gulf Kingdom.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan even visited Islamabad in December last to convey the Saudi leadership's gratitude to Pakistan for not attending the summit.

After pulling out from the event, Khan spoke to his Malaysian counterpart over the phone and offered him to visit after the summit.

It is believed that Khan will use the visit to explain to Mahathir the reason for Pakistan's pull out from the summit.

This is Khan's second visit to Malaysia since assuming office in August 2018. The last visit was in November 2018.

Prime Minister Mahathir had visited Pakistan in March last year and was the chief guest at the Pakistan Day Parade.

The two prime ministers also met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly Session in New York in September 2019.

One year of Imran Khan as Prime Minister of Pakistan. No one is celebrating. There is nothing to celebrate. Question is not “What’s he done?” but “What’s he done right?” Very little, would be an honest answer.

Politically, he has failed. On the economic front he has been a disaster. Forget the ‘Naya Pakistan’ he promised. Even the good old Pakistani rupee is down by a third of its value. The economy is a bigger mess than what he inherited. Opposition parties observed his one year in office with protest rallies. They accused Khan of ruining the economy. Inflation and joblessness are high. Pakistan is facing a balance of payments crisis. Far from providing relief during what is one of Pakistan’s bleakest economic periods, Khan’s government has imposed belt-tightening austerity.

The economic mismanagement combined with his inability to place economics at the centre of politics has stirred protests. The political mood is sullen, defiant and angry. His response to it has been to stifle criticism, including through press censorship. Terrorism, far from declining, has been growing and spreading under his government.

However, he has a few successes to his credit. His public relations have helped him win favourable perception in world capitals, especially Washington. President Trump is gung-ho about the former cricketer-turned-politician. Despite his economic mishandling, institutions like the IMF still have faith in him.

Thus, while his first year has not been promising or noteworthy for performance by any yardstick, in terms of public relations, perception management and diplomacy, Imran Khan’s accomplishments are impressive.

Far from providing relief during what is one of Pakistan’s bleakest economic periods, Khan’s government has imposed belt-tightening austerity. The economic mismanagement combined with his inability to place economics at the centre of politics has stirred protests. The political mood is sullen, defiant and angry. His response to it has been to stifle criticism, including through press censorship. Terrorism, far from declining, has been growing and spreading under his government. However, he has a few successes to his credit. His public relations have helped him win favourable perception in world capitals, especially Washington. President Trump is gung-ho about the former cricketer-turned-politician. Despite his economic mishandling, institutions like the IMF still have faith in him. Thus, while his first year has not been promising or noteworthy for performance by any yardstick, in terms of public relations, perception management and diplomacy, Imran Khan’s accomplishments are impressive. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will project the progress in implementing USD 50 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects during this year's Boao Forum for Asia, according to the Foreign Office.

This year's forum in Boao, a coastal town in the southern island province of China's Hainan, will be themed 'Open and Innovative Asia for a World of Greater Prosperity'.

The Pakistan Foreign Office said in a statement that Abbasi will lead the Pakistani delegation to the Boao Forum Annual Conference for Asia.

Abbasi will be one of the keynote speakers in the opening session of the forum along with President Xi Jinping, and other leaders attending the annual forum.

"The Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with Chinese and other world leaders," said the FO.

The Forum would provide an opportunity to Abbasi to project the progress in implementing China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects.

The 3,000-km-long CPEC is aimed at connecting China and Pakistan with rail, road, pipelines and optical cable fiber network. It connects China's Xinjiang province with Pakistan's Gwadar port, providing access to China to the Arabian Sea.

The project, when completed, would enable China to pump its oil supplies from the Middle East through pipelines to Xinjiang cutting considerable distance for Chinese ships to travel to China.

"The visit will help in promoting Pakistan as a successful economic partner in the region as well as in the global context, the FO said.

The Boao Forum for Asia is a non-profit organisation that hosts high-level forums for leaders from government, business, and academia in Asia and other continents to share their vision on the most pressing issues in this dynamic region and the world at large.

Modelled after the World Economic Forum held annually in Davos, Switzerland, the Boao Forum has its fixed address in Bo'ao, Hainan province, China, although the Secretariat is based in Beijing.

Pakistan&#39;s anti-graft watchdog has informed an accountability court here that ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family&#39;s declared assets were nearly Rs 58 million 18 years ago, a media report said Sunday.

Three corruption cases were filed against 68-year-old Sharif and some of his family members on September 8 following a Supreme Court verdict that disqualified him as prime minister and ordered the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for the institution of cases against the PML-N leader.

The cases include Avenfield properties, Azizia &amp; Hill Metal Establishment, and Flagship Investments.

In two supplementary references &ndash; one pertaining to Flagship Investments Limited and 15 other companies, and the other to Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment &ndash; against Sharif and his sons, NAB said the total declared financial worth of assets of the accused persons as per their tax record in 2000-01 was Rs 50,940,870 and $ 64,984 (Rs 7.18 million), a media reported Sunday.

&quot;The NAB chairman said in the reference that Sharif had acquired Al-Azizia Steel Mills as well as Hill Metal Establishment, but the proceeds were found disproportionate to his known sources of income,&quot; the paper said.

In the supplementary references, the NAB said that Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz, in connivance with each other, assisted, abetted and aided Sharif in accumulating and managing assets, the paper reported.

Al-Azizia and Hill Metal supplementary reference stated that the investigation officer had seized material evidence, including certified banking record, regarding remittances sent from Hill Metal Establishment to different persons. NAB claimed that Sharif had acquired and owned &quot;assets and its crime proceeds are in millions of rupees&quot; with the active connivance of his sons as dependents/benamidars, the paper said.

In the Flagship supplementary reference, NAB said that the bureau collected material evidence, including certified record, pertaining to companies and properties established in the UK by the accused persons.

Subsequently, the top anti-graft body said that the record establishes and reaffirms the ownership as well as the acquisition of assets by the accused persons.

The prosecution said that the accused persons were given fair opportunities to explain and provide evidence justifying the accumulation of assets but they failed to do so.

NAB stated that the accused persons&#39; public statements through media, as well as record produced in their defence before the Supreme Court and the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the Panama Papers, were found &quot;untrue&quot;.

Sharif and his sons have been named in all three interim and supplementary references while Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar have only been named in the interim and supplementary reference pertaining to Avenfield properties.

Currently, Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir is recording evidence in the Avenfield properties reference.

On February 22, two foreign witnesses would record their statements via video link.

Party leaders decided in a Central Working Committee meeting to amend the PML-N&#39;s constitution to allow any person to assume presidency even if he did not hold public office. This is effectively being seen as a move to ease Sharif into the position.&nbsp;

Prominent party leaders were present and agreed to the proposal. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, interim president Senator Sardar Yaqub Nasir, and the influential chief minister of Pakistan&#39;s Punjab province, &nbsp;Shahbaz Sharif were present in the meeting along with PML-N chairman Raja Zafarul Haq.

A general council meeting of the party is also being held on Monday and Tuesday to re-elect Sharif as the president.&nbsp;

Sharif had appeared before and accountability court on Monday morning after which he reached Punjab House for an informal advisory session.

Pakistanis began casting votes on Sunday for the parliamentary seat vacated by ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in a by-election seen as a test of support for the Sharif dynasty ahead of the 2018 general election.

Sharif&#39;s ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party hopes a resounding victory in the eastern city of Lahore would show that support for the family was undiminished despite the Supreme Court&#39;s removal of Sharif in July.

Sharif&#39;s daughter Maryam has spearheaded the PML-N campaign for her mother Kulsoom - who is the PML-N candidate despite receiving cancer treatment in London with Nawaz at her side.

Maryam, who some PML-N leaders see as a future leader, has framed the poll as a chance for voters to give a bloody nose to the judiciary by handing the party a thumping victory.

&quot;Will you take revenge for your disrespected vote?&quot; Maryam asked supporters at a recent rally.

Opposition leader Imran Khan, whose threats of street protests pushed the Supreme Court to launch a probe into Nawaz&#39;s wealth, is seeking to build on the success of his anti-graft crusade by making inroads into Sharifs&#39; power base in Punjab.

The Supreme Court in July disqualified Sharif because he did not declare a monthly salary, equivalent to $2,722, from a company owned by his son when the veteran leader, who had held power twice in the 1990s, became prime minister for the third time. Sharif denies receiving the salary.

Khan has turned the by-election into a plebiscite about corruption and has accused the provincial Punjab government, which is run by Nawaz&#39;s brother Shahbaz, of abusing state resources to help the PML-N campaign.

&quot;Your prime minister owns some of the most expensive real estate in the world, all in his daughter&#39;s name. Meanwhile half the children of this country are malnourished,&quot; Khan told a rally on Saturday.

Pakistan National Assembly to pick PM today, 6 candidates in fray

The National Assembly of Pakistan on Tuesday picked Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the country&#39;s 18th prime minister, replacing Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted last week over corruption allegations, Pakistani media reported.

Abbasi won the elections with 221 votes.

The session of the National Assembly to elect the new prime minister was summoned by President Mamnoon Hussain at 3:00 pm on Tuesday.

Pakistan&rsquo;s ruling Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had nominated Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to serve as the interim minister.

Abbasi will serve as the interim prime minister until Shahbaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif&rsquo;s brother, can take over.&nbsp;PML-N holds a majority of 188 seats in 342-member National Assembly and Abbasi was expected to win.&nbsp;

The National Assembly of Pakistan on Tuesday picked Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the country's 18th prime minister, replacing Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted last week over corruption allegations, Pakistani media reported. Abbasi won the elections with 221 votes. The session of the National Assembly to elect the new prime minister was summoned by President Mamnoon Hussain at 3:00 pm on Tuesday. Pakistan’s ruling Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had nominated Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to serve as the interim minister. Abbasi will serve as the interim prime minister until Shahbaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif’s brother, can take over. PML-N holds a majority of 188 seats in 342-member National Assembly and Abbasi was expected to win. He must be elected to the National Assembly before becoming the new prime minister. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had fielded Sheikh Rashid as a nominee. Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and the Jamaat-e-Islami had named Kishwar Zehra and Sahibzada Tariqullah respectively for the post. In the meantime, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which enjoys a majority in Parliament, has nominated ex-oil minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as interim prime minister.&nbsp;

The top court ousted Sharif Friday after an investigation into corruption allegations against him and his family, bringing his historic third term in power to an unceremonious end.

&quot;The nomination papers --- shall be delivered to the Secretary, National Assembly by 2.00 pm, on Monday,&quot; said a notification by the National Assembly Secretariat and seen by AFP.&nbsp;

It said the assembly would meet at 3:00 pm Tuesday (1000 GMT) for the &quot;election of the Prime Minister&quot;.

The younger Sharif -- who is chief minister of the country&#39;s most populous province of Punjab -- has so far been unscathed by the corruption allegations engulfing his brother&#39;s family.&nbsp;

However he only holds only a provincial seat and therefore must be elected to the national assembly before becoming prime minister.

On Saturday the Election Commission said fresh elections would be held in Nawaz Sharif&#39;s former constituency, in the family&#39;s power base in Punjab, in a process that could take up to 45 days.&nbsp;

Abbasi is set to be rubber-stamped as placeholder in the parliamentary vote.

The opposition could also field a candidate but has little chance of securing enough votes in the 342-seat house.
