Leaders of a Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) based party have challenged the Pakistani establishment to form a joint team and access the ground situation in Gilgit-Baltistan where the people for long have been facing the question of their survival for different reasons.

The region of Gilgit-Baltistan and the misnamed 'Azad' Kashmir ('AJK') in northeastern Pakistan face severe power shortages, pay higher prices for electricity and receive no royalty from Pakistan against the acquisition of land for China's multi-billion dollar projects under the CPEC and dams raised in the illegally occupied territories.

Addressing the media here, members of the Awami Action Committee (AAC) said: "We have a proposal for Pakistan, let's form one team comprising our members and the journalists and another team comprising members of the administration."

"The Government team can raid common households and our team be allowed to raid government departments. They (Government) can seize our electrical equipment if they find it a luxury for us and let us raid their special electrical connections and transformers they have set up specifically for administrators," they said.

"Let us see if this could resolve this matter of electricity," they said while mocking the Pakistani establishment over the ongoing economic crisis that has badly affected the people in the region, who lack access to water, electricity and even the most basic requirements.

They also stated that had they rejected the taxation policies introduced in the federal budget by the Pakistan government, which negatively impacts businesses in this region.

"The Government of Pakistan first installed a plastic meter during the construction of a 14-megawatt hydropower plant in Gilgit-Baltistan. They coerced us to install those meters saying there would be no electricity issues from now on," said another member.

"Earlier we had much efficient German made meters at our homes but they replaced them with these cheap plastic meters. Where are that crores of money? Another 18-megawatts hydro-electric project is under construction. They would make us install a new metre for that and so on. Electricity does not come just by installing metres," he added.

The Awami Action Committee also pointed out that the region receives no royalty from Pakistan against the acquisition of land for multi-billion dollar CPEC project and dams raised in the illegally occupied territory of Gilgit-Baltistan.

They added: "Electric poles are pegged on our land, wires are laid through our land, rather than getting royalty we are facing load shedding and shortage of drinking water due to dirty water held up after the construction of dams. We are drinking that dirty water just in the optimism of getting uninterrupted power supply. This whole gamut of installing new meters is just to make money through corrupt practice."

There is widespread resentment against the Pakistani administration in Gilgit Baltistan.

They are saturated with the ill-practices of corruption and continuous suppression, which Pakistan has been perpetrating for decades.

United States warns Pakistan over CPEC project

A petition has been filed against Pakistan Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, for serving despite being an Ahmadi Muslim.

The petition, filed by former Major Khalid Shah in Peshawar High Court, claims that Bajwa ought not to serve as he belongs to Qadiani community.

Qadianis, also known as Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan have been perceived and declared ''non-Muslims'' by the heads of all sects.

As per Pakistan's Constitution, a non-Muslim officer cannot be appointed as the army chief.

The plea also named the former DG ISI Rizwan Akhtar for failing to fulfil his duty as a Muslim by not informing the government that Bajwa is a ''non-Muslim''.

The petitioner used to study with Akhtar.

In August, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan-led government extended Bajwa's term by another three years.

The plea, filed by Shah, termed the army chief's extension as "illegal and invalid''.

Bajwa was appointed by erstwhile Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in November 2016.

Fifty-eight-year-old Bajwa previously served as the Commander of Rawalpindi Corps. He was also employed as the Inspector General, Training and Evaluation, at GHQ, a position earlier held by his predecessor Raheel Sharif.

As a brigadier, he served as the Chief of Staff at X Corps and commanded formation division in Northern Areas as the Formation Commander (FCNA).

International Commission for Jurists (ICJ) has asked Pakistan authorities to immediately lodge a First Information Report (FIR) and investigate the matter of abduction of human rights activist Idris Khattak.

Khattak, who has documented cases of enforced disappearances, was abducted by intel agencies from Pakhtunkhwa province on November 13, politician Jibran Nasir said.

"Idris Khattak worker of National Party who has previously worked with @amnesty & @hrw was abducted by Intel agencies 6 days ago on Islamabad Peshawar highway near Swabi Interchange as per his driver who was abducted along with him but released 3 days later #MissingInPakistan," tweeted Nasir.

Khattak has worked for Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

In a complaint filed in Anbar police station, Khattak driver Shahsawar said that the activist was on his way from Akora Khattak village to Swabi when about four unidentified men stopped the activist's car at motorway Interchange and kidnapped him on November 13.

According to Dawn, though the complaint was filed by Khattak's driver and family, police did not register an FIR.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) demanded Khattak's "immediate recovery", saying that he had "remained associated with progressive politics since his student days".

"HRCP condemns arbitrary detentions and urges the Pakistani state to fulfil its constitutional obligations towards its citizens," the organisation said in a tweet.

According to the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, an entity established by the Pakistani government, 5,000 cases of enforced disappearances have been registered since 2014. Most of them are still unresolved.

Independent local and international human rights organisations put the numbers much higher. Around 20,000 have reportedly been abducted only from Balochistan, out of which more than 2,500 have turned up dead as bullet-riddled dead bodies, bearing signs of extreme torture.

Pakistan's establishment has been long criticised over its practice of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings by International bodies and local human rights organisations that dare to speak out on the issue.

In September, activist Gulalai Islamil fled the country to avoid harassment by security agencies and surfaced in the US seeking asylum.

Pakistan is facing the oddest crisis of them all - locusts.

Coincidentally, tomato prices have sky-rocketed in Pakistan, with most farmers living in distress.

But the authorities have to now fight locusts as they're capable of destroying up to 40 per cent of the crops in the country.

Locusts are characterised by their short horns, dynamic colours, and the ability to travel long distances.

In fact, the pests have taken over Pakistan's most populous city, Karachi, over the course of last week.

Residents of the city, have taken to social media to vent their anger and have requested others to beware of these creatures.

The short-horned grasshoppers have also attacked farmlands in Sindh and Karachi.

Areas like Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas and Sanghar have lost 40 per cent of their crops. These include wheat, cotton and several vegetables.

According to many farmers, this is the worst locust crisis in two decades.

Pakistan's food security is under attack, as only two out of its 21 crop-spraying aeroplane fleet are functional. The country lacks the resources to win this battle. In the face of Pakistan's mounting debt, the scope for solutions becomes even dimmer.

Sindh's Minister of Agriculture recently suggested ''cooking'' the locusts and ''making biryani'' to solve the problem.

The locust attack coincides with Pakistan's facing a shortage of basic food ingredients, with prices sky-rocketing. Tomatoes are increasingly becoming out of common man's reach. Priced at Rs 300 per kilogram, the important ingredient costs over $4.

In ideal socio-economic situations, tomatoes cost Rs 20 a kilogram, ie, a quarter of a dollar.

Recently, Iran offered to help Pakistan's tomato shortage by exporting tomatoes to them.

India at UNESCO: 'Pakistan has DNA of terrorism'

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that he holds no grudge against Nawaz Sharif and that the ailing former premier's health is more important than politics.

Khan's remark, on Friday, came a day after PML-N chief Shehbaz Sharif warned that he would hold the former responsible in case anything happened to his brother as his administration was "dilly-dallying on the removal of Nawaz's name from the no-fly list", Express Tribune reported.

Presiding over a meeting of the PTI core committee, the prime minister said that his government had facilitated Sharif at every forum on humanitarian grounds and had also come up with a legal option to strike his name off the Exit Control List (ECL).

He also said that the government had no issues if the Sharif family opted to approach the court instead of furnishing an indemnity bond for the removal of the former prime minister's name from the ECL.

Pakistan's Interior Ministry on Wednesday had decided to grant Sharif a "one-time" permission to travel abroad for medical treatment for four weeks provided that he submits an indemnity bond of Rs 7 billion. The decision, however, was snubbed by the PML-N and challenged in the Lahore High Court on Friday.

On the same day, the High Court admitted a plea seeking the removal of Sharif's name from the no-fly list unconditionally.

Khan, however, regretted that the Sharif family was "playing politics" on the 69-year-old politician's health. He said that Sharif's health was deteriorating and his family's first priority should be to take him abroad for treatment instead of wrangling over the issue of the indemnity bond.

Sharif was expected to leave Pakistan on Sunday. However, his ticket was cancelled as the authorities did not remove his name from the ECL list.

Pakistan began vaccinating millions of children against typhoid on Friday to try to control a drug-resistant superbug outbreak of the fever that has already infected some 11,000 people since 2016 and risks spreading internationally.

The immunisation campaign, using a newly-developed shot designed to prevent typhoid fever infection for up to five years, starts in the southern Sindh province and is targeted at children between 9 months and 15 years old, officials said.

By 2021, it will become a nationwide programme and part of routine childhood vaccination schedules.

"Beginning the vaccination in urban areas is critical in preventing the disease among the communities most at risk," Azra Fazal Pechuho, Sindh's provincial minister for health, said in a statement. Typhoid also disproportionately affects children.

Typhoid is caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria and spreads through contaminated food and water. It causes fever, nausea, stomach pain and pink spots on the chest, and in severe cases can lead to complications in the gut and head that can be fatal.

A Global Burden of Disease Study by the US Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimates that in 2017 there were 11 million typhoid cases and 116,000 typhoid deaths worldwide.

The typhoid outbreak in Pakistan is caused by a bacterial strain that has evolved extensive drug resistance and becomes a so-called "superbug". It started in 2016 and has so far infected around 11,000 people, with a death rate of around 1 per cent.

The strain is resistant to all but one antibiotic used to treat typhoid. If it develops resistance to this final antibiotic treatment, disease experts say, death rates among those infected could rise dramatically to as much as 20 per cent.

The new typhoid vaccine was approved in 2018 by the World Health Organization. Its roll-out is funded by the Geneva-based GAVI vaccine alliance, a body backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the WHO, the World Bank, UNICEF and others, which arranges bulk buys to lower vaccine costs for poor countries.

"This was a terrifying disease in the past," GAVI's chief executive, Seth Berkley, said in a telephone interview. "(And) the rise of extreme drug-resistant typhoid risks bringing us back to levels of mortality not seen since the 19th century - posing a risk to all of us."

Cases of have already been spread in travellers to Pakistan from the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, Denmark and Taiwan, who have brought the disease to their home countries.
