A Pakistani reporter has been slammed online after he raised an objection to the Pakistan women's football team payers wearing shorts during their matches in a tournament. The Pakistan women's team recently returned home after the end of their campaign in the ongoing South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women's Cup in Nepal where they earned their biggest in against Maldives.

Pakistan recorded a forgetful campaign in the SAFF Women's Cup but managed to end their tournament on a high by beating Maldives comprehensively by 7-0 in their last game. It was their first win in the tournament in eight years and the team was lauded by many for their superb performance.

They received a warm reception back home after recording their biggest win in the tournament but things soon turned sour for the players and the members of the support staff during the press conference back home. A reporter decided to focus on the kits of the Pakistani players instead of their performances and went on to ask an absurd question.

Raising an objection to the female players wearing shorts during the tournament in Nepal, the reporter asked head coach Adeel Rizki why the players didn't wear leggings during their matches in Nepal.

“As you know we belong to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan which is an Islamic country, I want to ask why are these girls wearing shorts, not leggings,” the reporter asked Rizki during the presser.

Clearly taken aback by the question, the Pakistan women's team head coach responded, "one has to be progressive".

“We have never tried to stop anyone as far as the uniform is concerned, it’s something we don’t control,” he explained.

'Why are they wearing shorts?': Pakistan journalist asks women's football team coach, slammed online

Sanju Samson was snubbed from India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad which was announced earlier this month. The talented wicket-keeper batter was touted by many to make the cut into the final 15-man squad but was overlooked as the selectors picked Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant as the two wicket-keepers in the team.

Samson failed to even make it to the list of reserves which left his fans disappointed. Ever since India's squad was announced, there has been a lot of talk surrounding Samson's non-selection and his fans have lashed out at the BCCI and selectors for not providing enough chances to the 27-year-old.

Amid the growing debate over his snub, Samson was on Saturday named the captain of the India A team for their upcoming unofficial ODI series against New Zealand. Reacting to his appointment as captain, former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria said the BCCI came under massive pressure after Samson was not selected for the T20 World Cup 2022 which led to him becoming the captain of the India A team.

"Sanju has great fan following. His batting style, in Australia, gives you an X-factor. On bouncy wickets, nobody plays better than Sanju...Sanju has now been made India A captain (against New Zealand). BCCI came under so much pressure (for not selecting Sanju Samson for T20 World Cup), that Sanju was been handed the captaincy of India A," Kaneria said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Samson will be hoping to make the most of the opportunity and lead his team to victory against the Black Caps.

PM Shehbaz Sharif says 'even friendly countries think Pakistan is always begging'

The Pakistan-Afghanistan spat over the whereabouts of terrorist Maulana Masood Azhar is getting more curious. After Taliban-led Afghanistan rejected Islamabad's claims that the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief is in the neighbouring country, Pakistan issued a rejoinder.

Pakistan foreign ministry spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said on Thursday that Pakistan has "sufficient reasons" to be concerned that still there are pockets of "ungoverned spaces" within Afghanistan that are being used by terrorist groups as safe havens. Azhar is one of the terrorists freed by India in exchange for passengers of a hijacked plane of Indian Airlines in 1999. Since his release, he oversaw several terror attacks, including some targeting India. It's incredible and amusing at the same time to hear Thursday's statement from Pakistan, which is historically known to harbour terrorists. For many years, Azhar had freely roamed the country. It's unclear when and how he moved to Afghanistan, if at all the claims in this regard by Pakistan are correct. ALSO READ | No more funding from India to Sri Lanka as IMF talks progress: Sources Ahmed was asked about Pakistan's claims that Azhar, the founder of the Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed, is currently on Afghanistan soil. He was also asked about the letter that Pakistan wrote asking the Afghan authorities to "locate and arrest" Azhar. Pakistan's foreign office even shared details of regions where Azhar is suspected to be residing. Pakistan says that Azhar is likely to be in the Nangarhar and Kunhar areas of Afghanistan. The Taliban had rejected the claims. The spokesperson replied to a question about Azhar's whereabouts and the Taliban's rebuttal saying the Pakistani authorities have formally raised this issue with their relevant Taliban interlocutors on multiple occasions. He said they have also shared documentary evidence and offered "intelligence and operational" assistance to locate the individual. ALSO READ | With USD 377 million in loans, India is Sri Lanka's top lender in 2022: Report The spokesperson said, "Pakistan, as well as the international community, have sufficient reasons to be concerned that there still remain pockets of ungoverned spaces within Afghanistan that are being used by terrorist groups as safe havens. Multiple deadly cross-border terrorist attacks from Afghanistan only increase these legitimate concerns." Pakistan's foreign ministry spokesperson also said that the Afghan interim authorities have repeatedly assured us and the wider international community that they would not allow terrorist groups to use their territory to operate against any other country. "We expect the Afghan interim authorities would take concrete and verifiable actions to deliver on these assurances. I think this will go a long way to improve their credibility and increase the confidence of the international community on their capacity and willingness to counter the persistent threats posed by terrorism," he added. The Taliban reject claims This comes after the Taliban's interim Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid made the strongly-worded remarks on the claims, as quoted by Afghanistan's ToloNews, Mujahid said, "This is not true. Nobody has made such a demand from us. Jaish-e-Mohammad chief is not in Afghanistan. Such organisations can operate on Pakistan’s soil – and even under official patronage. We’ll not allow anyone to use Afghanistan’s soil against any other country." Masood Azhar's JeM is responsible for multiple deadly attacks in India, including the attack on the Indian Parliament in December 2001. The attack had brought India and Pakistan to the brink of a full-scale war. Masood Azhar is India's most wanted terrorist. Pakistan is suffering from catastrophic floods that hit across the country. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited the country. This calamity came at possibly the worst time that Pakistan could expect.

The country is already suffering from political, economic and geopolitical problems. For the past few months, Pakistan is in stringent condition. Husain Haqqani, a former ambassador of Pakistan to the US, recently warned that if this continues Pakistan could become another Sri Lanka.

Let's examine in detail how one catastrophe led to another. It all probably started this April, when then Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted by the National Assembly of Pakistan in the no-confidence motion.

Shahbaz Sharif, a former chief minister of the Punjab province of Pakistan and younger brother of the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif took over as the new PM of the south Asian nation.

In a parliamentary democracy, it is very common to lose the majority and sit on the other side of the table, but not in Pakistan. Khan, who proclaimed himself the leader of the Muslim ummah, refused to acknowledge the result of the no-confidence motion.

He claimed that the whole motion was a conspiracy by the US government to dethrone him. Khan argued that the West did not approve of Pakistan’s close relations with Russia and China. He alleged that the deep state (Pakistani Military) with the help of American intelligence conspired against him and his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Khan along with all of his legislatures of PTI resigned from the National Assembly. Since then he is demanding early elections. But the current government, along with coalition partners, is keen to complete the remaining term of one and a half years.

Before leaving office he staunchly gave excessive subsidies on rations and fuels. This made it very hard for the incumbent government to reverse those actions. Eventually, the political storm coupled with uncertainty in the market led to an economic crisis in the country.

Pakistan, which already was struggling to get an IMF bailout, had to face more economic constraints because of Khan’s subsidy move. In the past 60 years, Pakistan has received loans from the IMF 22 times, all of which have strict terms like raising energy prices, eliminating energy subsidies, raising taxes, privatising state organisations, making budgetary adjustments etc.

It is being perceived by economists that, once the bailout is finalised, Pakistan will notice a sudden surge in inflation rates. Pakistani economy, which was already affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and being on the FATF grey list (since 2018) is yet at another juncture of getting a fiscal shock, with the current government not able to overturn the risk of the default.

As Miftah Ismail last week imposed an extra tax on fuel and averted the subsidy, former PM Khan was ready to absorb political gain out of the situation. Khan in the last few months made it very hard for the current ruling government to take any substantive decision. In his political rallies, he constantly targets PM Shahbaz and current Army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Pakistan right now is in front of the perfect storm. With the Taliban taking over in Afghanistan, another security risk of, the Pakistani Taliban or TTP (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan), is averting in the northwest frontiers. TTP which is considered to be a Pakistani arm of the Afghan Taliban wants the same fate as Afghanistan for Pakistan. TTP is responsible for the disastrous Peshawar army school terror attack of 2014, in which more than 150 people had lost their lives out of which 134 were students. The following months will be very hard for Pakistani leaders, the opposition and especially the establishment. On one hand, they will be fighting with the political turmoil on other economic uncertainty. Similarly on one hand they’ll be fighting with the extremism and terror outfits on the other climate floods. It is the need of the hour that Pakistani politicians and the Pakistani establishment come together and work for the collective good of the people ignoring personal gain and benefits.

TTP is yet again active in Pakistan as political instability approaches. The following months will be very hard for Pakistani leaders, the opposition and especially the establishment. Perils of Pakistan’s stability

The Taliban have warned Pakistan for claiming that #MasoodAzhar is hiding in Afghanistan. It has slammed Islamabad for making 'baseless claims' saying such terrorists can only operate on Pakistani soil. Priyanka Sharma tells you more.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was formed in 2001 after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.The grouping includes Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The SCO has focused on regional security and counter-terrorism among other key focus areas.

What made India join the SCO?

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan's new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will both be in the same room at the Shanghai cooperation organization or SCO summit but any structured bilateral between the sidelines is unlikely. India and Pakistan both became members of the grouping in 2017 and since then leaders of the 2 countries have been present at various meetings, including at Defence, foreign and NSA levels.

The grouping's meeting in the past has seen both Indian, and Pakistani leadership present under the same roof, but given the state of the relationship, no talks have happened. In 2019, the last time the in-person summit of SCO grouping happened in Kyrgyzstan, both Indian PM Modi and Pakistan's then Prime Minister Imran Khan were present together.

Earlier this year, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Pakistani Foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto were present together at the SCO foreign ministers' meet in Tashkent, but no meeting happened. That time speaking to WION, Bhutto ruled out any meeting between the 2 leaders.

Earlier this year, as part of diplomatic protocols, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to the new Pakistani PM pointing out that New Delhi would like to have "normal neighbourly relations" calling for "constructive engagement" but also raising the issue of terror with Islamabad, calling for an "environment free of terror and violence". Last month, the Indian Prime Minister extended his condolences on the devastating floods in the country, responding to which the Pakistani PM thanked him and expressed optimism that his country will overcome the adverse impact of the natural calamity.

But on any chances of humanitarian assistance, MEA spokesman Arindam Bagchi said, "Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has shared his sadness at the devastation caused by the floods in Pakistan. You've seen his comments. He has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the injured and all those affected by the natural calamity".

Under the present Modi government, attempts have been made to reach out to Islamabad since 2014. India invited the then Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif, the elder brother of the current Pakistani PM to the swearing-in ceremony of PM Modi. Both PM Modi and Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif met on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Russia in July of 2015, and in the same year, both met on the sidelines of the Paris climate change summit in December 2015, a picture that showed both sitting together in a very informal close manner.

Later that month, PM Modi made a surprise visit to Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore. That was the first visit by any Indian Prime Minister to Pakistan in more than 10 years, raising hopes for peace between New Delhi and Islamabad. The then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also took the initiative to propose a Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue in December 2015.

But all the outreach was followed by major terror attacks like the Pathankot Airbase attack on 2 January 2016, and the attack on the Indian army Camp in Uri in August 2016. 2018, attempts were again made, with a proposed meeting of Indian, and Pakistani foreign ministers on the sidelines of UNGA but it was cancelled at the last moment after terrorist entities brutally killed three police personnel in Jammu and Kashmir.

The big blow to ties came in February 2019 after the Pulwama terror attack in which India's 40 security personnel were martyred. This terrorist act was perpetrated by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), a Pakistan-based terrorist organization proscribed by the United Nations which is led by UN-designated and internationally proscribed terrorist Masood Azhar. Later that year, Islamabad suspended People to people ties, and trade ties and downgraded its relationship with India after New Delhi removed the special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

A bilateral between Indian and Pakistani leaders is a farfetched thing now, a pull aside will be a miracle. While for India, the issue of Pakistan's support of terror has been a major concern, for Pakistani PM Shahbaz Sharif, any meeting with Indian PM Modi means facing the wrath of Imran Khan ahead of elections. For the foreseeable future, India-Pakistan ties remain in a deep freeze, a freeze that is unlikely to go very soon.

Sanju Samson was trending on Twitter soon after India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday. The wicket-keeper batter was not in the reckoning for selection but many believed he had an outside chance due to his experience and brilliant strokeplay which could have helped the Indian team during the showpiece event in Australia next month.

However, much to the dejection of many, Samson was snubbed from the 15-man squad with India selecting Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik as the two wicket-keeper batters in the team. Like many, former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria was also left baffled by Samson's absence from India's squad and called the decision unfair.

Kaneria believes Samson should have made the cut ahead of Pant in the squad and that he has not been given enough opportunities by the selectors despite performing well.

“It is a bit unfair for someone like Sanju Samson. He should have been considered for the T20 World Cup squad. What has he done wrong to not find a place? He has also been ignored for India’s home series against Australia and South Africa. I would have gone for Samson instead of Rishabh Pant,” Kaneria said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Samson last featured for India on their tour of Zimbabwe last month where he scored 58 runs in two ODIs. The talented wicket-keeper batter has been around for a while now but hasn't quite managed to live up to the expectations due to his inconsistent performances.

He was part of India's squad in the T20I series against Sri Lanka earlier this year where Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had lavished praise on the star batter and called him a match-winner. Rohit had said the Indian team management wanted to give opportunities to Samson as he is someone who has a range of shots and he can be useful in Australia.

“As a team management, we see a lot of potential, we see a lot of talent and we see a lot of match-winning abilities in that individual (Sanju Samson),” Rohit Sharma had said about Samson.

“His back-foot play is superb, some of the shots you must have seen during the IPL, the pick-up pull, the cut shots, standing and delivering over bowler’s head. Those kinds of shots are not easy to play and I believe when we go to Australia, you need that kind of shot-making ability and Samson does have it in him. I just hope that he utilises his potential to the maximum,” he added.

However, the 27-year-old has missed the bus once again and will be hoping to spark a turnaround in his international career with better performances in the opportunities that come his way in the future. Samson has so far played 7 ODIs and 16 T20Is in his career, amassing 176 and 296 runs in the two formats respectively.
