Padmaavat should not be screened, appeal to public to impose 'curfew': Karni Sena chief

Members of the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/padmaavat-women-of-kshatriya-community-threaten-to-perform-jauhar-if-the-films-release-is-not-stalled-29572">Rajput community</a> have refused to accept the decision of the Supreme Court allowing the screening of Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s Padmaavat.

&quot;We do not accept the decison of Supreme Court on Padmaavat. Our protest will continue,&quot; said Vikramaditya Singh, state president of Sarv Rajput Kshatriya Mahasabha in Raipur.

&quot;Members of the Rajput community have submitted a memorandum to Chhattisgarh Home Minister Ramsewak Paikra demanding ban on Padmaavat in the state. Cinema halls screening the film would be burnt down. No changes hereafter are acceptable. We want a complete ban. This is our final warning,&quot; he added.

The Supreme Court on Thursday <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/padmaavat-cleared-by-the-supreme-court-in-four-states-stays-ban-29917">cleared the decks</a> for the all-India release of controversial movie &#39;Padmaavat&#39; on January 25 and stayed notifications and orders issued by Rajasthan and Gujarat prohibiting exhibition of the film in their states.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also restrained any other state from issuing such notifications and orders prohibiting exhibition of the movie.

&quot;We direct that there shall be a stay of operation on the notification and orders issued and we also restrain other states from issuing such notifications or orders in this matter,&quot; the bench said in its interim order.

Senior advocates Harish Salve and Mukul Rohatgi, representing Viacom 18 and other producers of the movie, told the bench that states have no power to issue such notifications banning exhibition of a film when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given a certificate of release.

The producers submitted <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-padmaavat-producers-move-supreme-court-against-states-banning-release-29802">before the Supreme Court</a> that the movie has undergone changes including in its title as suggested by the CBFC.

Asserting that the film has been cleared by the CBFC, the plea has said that the states cannot impose a blanket ban on a film and its screening can be suspended in a particular area or areas on account of law and order problem, not across the states.

The film is based on the saga of the historic battle of 13th century between Maharaja Ratan Singh and his army of Mewar and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi.

The set of the movie was vandalised twice - in Jaipur and Kolhapur, while its director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was roughed up by members of the Karni Sena last year.

Over 70 activists of the Rajasthan- based Karni Sena were detained here today while protesting outside the Central Board of Film Certification&#39;s office against the clearance given to Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s Padmavat, earlier titled Padmavati.

Opposing the CBFC&#39;s decision to release the film, a Karni Sena leader said, &quot;Merely changing the name of the film isn&#39;t enough. The CBFC which has been running ever since the time of Britishers doesn&#39;t know how to work.&quot;
The Karni Sena has also demanded the resignation of Prasoon Joshi, the chairman of CBFC.

The CBFC had given the Deepika Padukone-starrer a U/A certificate and suggested many changes, including altering the title.

At the CBFC examining committee meeting on December 28, it was decided that the movie would be given a U/A certification as long as the makers incorporate the suggestions and modifications suggested.

Some of the key modifications suggested include those pertaining to disclaimers, pertinently adding one regarding not glorifying the practice of Sati.&nbsp;

Known for making cinema on real India, Anurag Kashyap has always been known to stand up for what is right. Whether it&#39;s his films, which deliver powerful messages on the Indian society or the director himself, Kashyap is one of those filmmakers who never shies away from speaking the truth.&nbsp;

His latest film Mukkabaaz is a sports drama cum love story set in Uttar Pradesh. The film&#39;s trailer hints at the film dealing with many issues that plague small-towns of India. From bureaucracy in sports to casteism, Mukkabaaz looks all set to deliver some powerful messages. So is his latest film a way to make a statement on the current wrongdoings in the society?

&quot;I don&#39;t make statements through my films. I like to be very honest and my honesty becomes a statement I guess. Mukkabaaz is a sports film. It talks about everything that is wrong with sports in India. It is also a love story but it talks about sports at a very basic, district level. &nbsp;It doesn&#39;t go to the national, or international level,&quot; says the director in a chat with WION.&nbsp;

Kashyap&#39;s film has Vineet Kumar Singh playing a Rajput boxer who falls in love with a mute Brahmin girl played by Zoya Hussain. Does the film deal with casteism, we ask. &quot;There is no casteist backdrop in the film, &quot;insists the filmmaker and says that it is wrong to make judgments on the film by watching just a trailer. &quot;When you see the film you will know, it is not. You see one dialogue of the film in isolation and draw a judgment around the film. And that is dangerous, more than anything else. We have a greater responsibility than judging a film based on one line, &quot;the director adds.&nbsp;

Kashyap though says that the film talks about everyday casteism that we practice. &quot;We are conditioned by it. Kowing and unknowingly. The film talks about three men. One who is conscious of his upper caste and takes advantage of that fact, another who is unaware of his caste, and the other who belongs to lower caste but now is doing well at a powerful position.&quot;

Mukkaabaz is incidentally written by the film&#39;s lead actor Vineet Singh. The actor had bounced off the idea to the filmmaker while the two were working on the sets of Ugly and Kashyap decided to make the film on the condition that Singh would get proper training of a boxer. Singh packed his bags and went to Punjab for rigorous training and spent three years preparing for the film. Wasn&#39;t it a risk to sit on a project for three years? &quot;It was only possible to invest in time because it was Vineet Kumar Singh. He is driven like that. I got an inkling of his capabilities when he lost 10 kilos for Gangs of Wasseypur. Aadmi jo bolta hai karta hai, I can put my trust and faith on him. Also, I had to raise money to make a film like Mukkabaaz. You know how the industry looks at people, Vineet is a character actor, lot of people had apprehension in investing money on a film that had him as the lead. &quot;

Kashyap said Anand L Rai came on board as a producer when Kashyap expressed his desire to make Mukkabaaz. &quot;Anand L Rai wanted me to make a film based on a script he had. I said I like the script but I want to make Mukkabaaz first so he said let&#39;s make Mukkabaaz and then Manmarziyaan. &quot;

The filmmaker who cast two known actors (Ravi Kishen and Jimmy Sheirgill) in supporting roles in Mukkabaaz admits that the country is star driven and &#39;believes in nepotism&#39;.&nbsp;

Mukkabaaz perhaps is Kashyap&#39;s only film that got cleared by the Censor board without any hiccup. The filmmaker had even praised the Censor board for cooperating in series of tweets a few days back. &quot;I&#39;ve fought and been vocal about my films like Bombay Velvet, Udta Punjab, Black Friday. But if I criticised then(the CBFC) I should also appreciate it when it does a good job.&quot;

When asked about the name change in Padmavati(now Padmavat), Kashyap steered clear from making any statement but added, &quot;We are all too quick to judge a film without watching it. That&#39;s the problem. Only Bhansali will know what he went through while getting his film cleared, so I can&#39;t comment on it. But you have to understand that Prasoon Joshi&#39;s position is also not an easy place to be in.&quot;

The filmmaker also believes that Mukkabaaz is his most coherent film till date. &quot;It reaches out more than Gangs Of Wasseypur and is relatable to a larger audience. It goes beyond being a sports film. &quot;

A firm believer that films are not made to deliver messages, Kashyap admits he is one of a kind in the film industry. &quot;I am in an odd position. The way I perceive cinema, no one in the film perceives it the same way. 90% people think cinema should have a message, I don&#39;t believe in it. If you think my films have a message- that&#39;s your take. I am not giving you the message. &quot;But he is a content man. &quot;I am happy that what I want to do I get to do.&quot;

Anurag Kashyap talks about casteism in society, Censor board, Padmavati and why his latest Mukkabaaz is a sports film.

Known for making cinema on real India, Anurag Kashyap has always been known to stand up for what is right. Whether it's his films, which deliver powerful messages on the Indian society or the director himself, Kashyap is one of those filmmakers who never shies away from speaking the truth. His latest film Mukkabaaz is a sports drama cum love story set in Uttar Pradesh. The film's trailer hints at the film dealing with many issues that plague small-towns of India. From bureaucracy in sports to casteism, Mukkabaaz looks all set to deliver some powerful messages. So is his latest film a way to make a statement on the current wrongdoings in the society? The country is star driven and believes in nepotism' × "I don't make statements through my films. I like to be very honest and my honesty becomes a statement I guess. Mukkabaaz is a sports film. It talks about everything that is wrong with sports in India. It is also a love story but it talks about sports at a very basic, district level. It doesn't go to the national, or international level," says the director in a chat with WION. Kashyap's film has Vineet Kumar Singh playing a Rajput boxer who falls in love with a mute Brahmin girl played by Zoya Hussain. Does the film deal with casteism, we ask. "There is no casteist backdrop in the film, "insists the filmmaker and says that it is wrong to make judgments on the film by watching just a trailer. "When you see the film you will know, it is not. You see one dialogue of the film in isolation and draw a judgment around the film. And that is dangerous, more than anything else. We have a greater responsibility than judging a film based on one line, "the director adds. A still from Mukkabaaz. (Others) × Kashyap though says that the film talks about everyday casteism that we practice. "We are conditioned by it. Kowing and unknowingly. The film talks about three men. One who is conscious of his upper caste and takes advantage of that fact, another who is unaware of his caste, and the other who belongs to lower caste but now is doing well at a powerful position." Also read: Mukkabaaz review Mukkaabaz is incidentally written by the film's lead actor Vineet Singh. The actor had bounced off the idea to the filmmaker while the two were working on the sets of Ugly and Kashyap decided to make the film on the condition that Singh would get proper training of a boxer. Singh packed his bags and went to Punjab for rigorous training and spent three years preparing for the film. Wasn't it a risk to sit on a project for three years? "It was only possible to invest in time because it was Vineet Kumar Singh. He is driven like that. I got an inkling of his capabilities when he lost 10 kilos for Gangs of Wasseypur. Aadmi jo bolta hai karta hai, I can put my trust and faith on him. Also, I had to raise money to make a film like Mukkabaaz. You know how the industry looks at people, Vineet is a character actor, lot of people had apprehension in investing money on a film that had him as the lead. " Vineet Singh underwent rigorous training for the film. (Others) × Kashyap said Anand L Rai came on board as a producer when Kashyap expressed his desire to make Mukkabaaz. "Anand L Rai wanted me to make a film based on a script he had. I said I like the script but I want to make Mukkabaaz first so he said let's make Mukkabaaz and then Manmarziyaan. " The filmmaker who cast two known actors (Ravi Kishen and Jimmy Sheirgill) in supporting roles in Mukkabaaz admits that the country is star driven and 'believes in nepotism'. Mukkabaaz perhaps is Kashyap's only film that got cleared by the Censor board without any hiccup. The filmmaker had even praised the Censor board for cooperating in series of tweets a few days back. Anurag Kashyap: I don't make statements through my films

It is astonishing what adversity can do to you. It has been eight long, painful and mortifying months now for filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali - the master of epic sagas like&nbsp;Devdas&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bajirao Mastani, which have made insane amounts of money while asserting the director&#39;s place as the only true successor to the epic filmmakers K Asif, Mehboob Khan, V Shantaram and Raj Kapoor.

For the past months while my dear friend Sanjay has been attacked physically and emotionally, he has felt like none of the movie moguls mentioned above could have felt. In fact, Sanjay feels like a common criminal, being hounded, threatened, bullied and heckled, for a crime whose nature he isn&#39;t aware of. Maybe he needs to read the law books which say making films in this country can be damaging to the filmmaker&#39;s health.

The&nbsp;Padmavat&nbsp;crisis has broken Sanjay physically and emotionally. For months now, he hasn&#39;t been eating or sleeping properly. And he has started chain-smoking again.

&quot;It&#39;s Lataji&#39;s songs and cigarettes which have kept me going all these months,&quot; he tells me. I stay quiet. I&#39;ve no words of consolation.

To say Sanjay has been to hell and back would be an understatement. Living under the constant shadow of threat and fear is like coping with a fatal disease, a cancer of the spirit that eats away at one&#39;s soul. The very real threats from the fringe groups - and I&#39;ve been first-hand witness to them where callers on his cell phone have been shouting they would do him much worse than merely behead him - is something that no outsider would understand, let alone empathise with.

The lack of real camaraderie within the film fraternity makes it worse for someone as private as Sanjay Bhansali. He became more vulnerable to attack when the attackers realized he had no support system to buffer the bullying. The post-midnight calls became more abusive and the threats more pecuniary in nature, if you know what I mean.

Yes, there were open offers to &#39;stop all protests&#39; in exchange of fiscal favours. Sanjay closed down his cell number. The calls then began coming on his home number, which were sometimes received by his old and ailing mother.

For Sanjay, the most important thing at that moment was to protect his mother from the hurt. He stopped watching news channels at home - and once the attacks gathered momentum and the security was beefed up, he was at home most of the time - so that his mother wouldn&#39;t be exposed to her son&#39;s vilification. But then, she would read about Sanjay&#39;s demonising the next morning in the Gujarati newspaper that she combed religiously.

The situation at Sanjay Bhansali&#39;s home was beyond depressing. At some point, Sanjay just gave up the fight and stopped thinking about the fate of&nbsp;Padmavat. He left all the marketing decisions to his producers, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. The decision to release&nbsp;Padmavaton January 25 is the producer&#39;s.&nbsp;

My friend Sanjay Bhansali has become a bystander in the drama of his own that&#39;s being played out in full public view. No one is sure how this bizarre narrative based on hearsay and political antipathy will pan out finally. As Sanjay Bhansali told a friend, &quot;Can the film release in the states that have threatened to ban it? Does the CBFC endorsement mean anything to those who want to stop my film at any cost?&quot;

And why do they want&nbsp;Padmavat&nbsp;stopped? A whim? An impulse? Or it is it something far deeper that you or I cannot understand? I guess, like Jessica, we&#39;ll never know who tried to kill&nbsp;Padmavat.

Opinion: Padmavat ready for release, but here is the toll it has taken on Sanjay Leela Bhansali

The date is finally confirmed. Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s film Padmavat is all set to release in the theatre on January 25th, 2018. The controversial film got its censor certificate earlier last week and now the makers have planned to release the film in January and cash in on the extended weekend.&nbsp;

Interestingly, the Bhansali&#39;s film will clash with two other major Bollywood releases that weekend- Akshay Kumar&#39;s Padman and Manoj Bajpayee&#39;s Aiyaary. While there has been speculation about the clash for some time, trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the film&#39;s release date on Monday afternoon.&nbsp;

Bhansali&#39;s film has been in the center of a massive controversy almost the greater part of 2017. Earlier called Padmavati, the film was scheduled for a December 1, 2017 release but its release was postponed by the makers after objections around the film took a political&nbsp;turn. As many as 5 states have banned the film including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Fringe outfit Rajput Karni Sena and political leaders had appealed to Censor Board to screen the film first to a select audience and remove objectionable scenes around it.&nbsp;

Only last week, CBFC invited a panel which included historians and former Royals to view the film and makers were asked to rename the film as Padmavat. In December, Bhansali had met a special Parliamentary&nbsp;committee and stated that the film was based on Jayasi&#39;s poem Padmavat.&nbsp;The film features Deepika Padukone, Ranveer&nbsp;Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles.&nbsp;

The makers of the film- Viacom 18 and Bhansali Productions- have not made any official announcement yet.&nbsp;

The film will release a day before Republic Day and cash on long weekend.

'Padmavat' finally gets release date, may clash with PadMan

She is undoubtedly the number one star in India currently. But Deepika Padukone wears her stardom lightly. The actress who made a smashing debut opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om, a decade back, has steadily grown as an actress and has tried to step out of her comfort zone by taking up challenging roles. Be it a period drama, a thriller or a slice-of-life film, Deepika has, in the last 10 years, struck a fine balance juggling varied characters with much ease.

She has worked with some of the biggest names in Bollywood and has managed to hold her own in&nbsp;those films. On her 32nd birthday, here is a look at the 8 films that made her the superstar that she is.

Om Shanti Om: Many termed it as a dream debut but Farah Khan&#39;s film on reincarnation pitted Deepika against the biggest star of them all-Shah Rukh Khan. Yet the actress managed to pull off the role of Shantipriya with absolute ease and made critics sit up and take notice of the debutant.&nbsp;

<iframe allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" gesture="media" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TjUXr560Gu0" width="560"></iframe>

Love Aaj Kal: Imtiaz Ali&#39;s film was an unconventional story of a couple and their lives post break up. With two distinct narratives and soulful music that is till date remembered, Love Aaj Kal was rather a different film. It was also one of the films that came to Deepika early in her career. Paired opposite Saif Ali Khan, Deepika played Meera Pandit a spirited woman who doesn&#39;t let a break up affect her relationship with Jai(Saif).&nbsp;

<iframe allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" gesture="media" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/sDne5fEsxec" width="560"></iframe>

Cocktail: 2012 proved to be a turning point in Deepika&#39;s career. The actress suddenly broke away from run-of-the-mill roles that she was doing in the past few years and worked in Homi Adajania&#39;s flawed Cocktail. While most had a problem with the film&#39;s convoluted storyline, everyone praised Deepika for her portrayal of Veronica. One had never seen Deepika playing such character before onscreen. Veronica had a heart of gold but had deep insecurities. She was glamorous and sexy and yet wasn&#39;t sure of herself. It was a complicated character to essay but Deepika absolutely nailed the part.&nbsp;

<iframe allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" gesture="media" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/q0LehEw6EpM" width="560"></iframe>

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani:There is no denying that Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone make for a stunning pair onscreen. When the former lovers decided to unite on the big screen for Ayan Mukerji&#39;s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in 2013, everyone was curious to see whether the awkwardness of the exes would reflect on the big screen as well. But the two managed to create absolute magic making the film one of the best love stories of the decade. While Ranbir played a restless noman, Deepika played the calming factor in his life. The film just a lot of people believe in fairytale romances.&nbsp;

<iframe allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" gesture="media" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QYO6AlxiRE4" width="560"></iframe>

Chennai Express:Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone reunited once again for Rohit Shetty&#39;s Chennai Express - a film that had Deepika playing a Tamilian. Armed with a heavy accent, Deepika matched SRK&#39;s acting in every frame. The film was a blockbuster hit and Deepika made her character Meenalochani Azhagusundaram on of the most endearing characters of 2013.&nbsp;

<iframe allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" gesture="media" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V8zXLMIjlcw" width="560"></iframe>

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela: The first film that Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh did with Sanjay Leela Bhansali was an Indian version of Romeo and Juliet. The crackling chemistry of the lead pair was hard to miss and in fact, it was because of these two that Ram Leela became such a hit. It was on the sets of this film that Deepika and Ranveer reportedly started dating. The film fetched her the Best Actress Filmfare award in 2013.&nbsp;

<iframe allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" gesture="media" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/szVW_w-W8cQ" width="560"></iframe>

Piku:Piku was refreshingly different. Till Piku, Deepika was only known for glamorous, larger than life characters. But Piku presented Deepika as a regular, ordinary girl. A slice-of-life film, the film had Deepika Padukone sharing screen space with two stalwarts- Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan but it was Deepika who stole the limelight with her portrayal of the ambitious, stubborn and caring Piku.&nbsp;

<iframe allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" gesture="media" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RVRlV53TjzY" width="560"></iframe>

Bajirao Mastani: Set in the early 18th century, the film was a tragic story of an extramarital affair. It was also a difficult role to portray physically for Deepika, who had to learn sword fighting, horse riding to play Princess Mastani. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film also co-starred Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra and together the three actors owned the screen with their powerful performances.&nbsp;

The film just a lot of people believe in fairytale romances. Chennai Express:Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone reunited once again for Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express - a film that had Deepika playing a Tamilian. Armed with a heavy accent, Deepika matched SRK's acting in every frame. The film was a blockbuster hit and Deepika made her character Meenalochani Azhagusundaram on of the most endearing characters of 2013. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela: The first film that Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh did with Sanjay Leela Bhansali was an Indian version of Romeo and Juliet. The crackling chemistry of the lead pair was hard to miss and in fact, it was because of these two that Ram Leela became such a hit. It was on the sets of this film that Deepika and Ranveer reportedly started dating. The film fetched her the Best Actress Filmfare award in 2013. Piku:Piku was refreshingly different. Till Piku, Deepika was only known for glamorous, larger than life characters. But Piku presented Deepika as a regular, ordinary girl. A slice-of-life film, the film had Deepika Padukone sharing screen space with two stalwarts- Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan but it was Deepika who stole the limelight with her portrayal of the ambitious, stubborn and caring Piku. Bajirao Mastani: Set in the early 18th century, the film was a tragic story of an extramarital affair. It was also a difficult role to portray physically for Deepika, who had to learn sword fighting, horse riding to play Princess Mastani. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film also co-starred Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra and together the three actors owned the screen with their powerful performances.

Deepika Padukone @ 32: 8 films that led to her rise in Bollywood

Unhappy over the censor board&#39;s green signal to Bollywood film Padmavati&nbsp;with certain changes, a Rajput outfit on Tuesday&nbsp;demanded a total ban on the film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and threatened to &quot;set ablaze&quot; the cinema halls screening it.

The Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena (RRKS) said the censor board&#39;s nod to the controversial film was &quot;unfortunate&quot;.

Talking to reporters here, the Gujarat president of the outfit, Raj Shekhawat, made an open threat, saying the RRKS members would take the law into their hands if the film was not banned across the country.

The Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone-starrer has already been banned in Gujarat and some other states.

The RRKS is a splinter group of the Rajasthan-based Rajput Karni Sena, which is also against the release of the film.

&quot;It is unfortunate that the censor board has decided to give the film a U/A certificate with only five changes. We will not accept this.

&quot;We want a total ban on the film, which glorifies the barbarian invader, Alauddin Khilji. Just like Gujarat and some other states, we want the Centre to stop its release in the other parts of the country as well,&quot; Shekhawat said.

Stating that a few changes here and there were not sufficient when the entire film was &quot;distorted&quot; and &quot;not based on historical facts&quot;, he said, &quot;We want the government to impose a pan-India ban on the film. Otherwise, we will take the law into our hands and not hesitate to set ablaze cinema halls (screening the film).&quot;

According to Shekhawat, a mere change in the disclaimer or in the title would not serve any purpose as the viewers would eventually believe what they saw in the film.

&quot;A panel of experts had also said that there were too many flaws (in the film). (The erstwhile) Mewar royal family&#39;s Maharaja Arvind Singh, who was also on the panel, had said that facts were distorted in the film. Even then, the censor board has taken such a decision. We will not sit quiet if the film is released,&quot; he said.

On December 30, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), headed by Prasoon Joshi, had announced that Padmavati&nbsp;would be given a U/A certificate and suggested that the director changed the film&#39;s title to Padmavat.

It had also suggested certain modifications in the disclaimer of the film, making it clear that it did not glorify the practice of &quot;Sati&quot;, and relevant changes in the song, &quot;Ghoomar&quot;, to befit the character portrayed in it.

The CBFC had clarified that the U/A certificate would be issued to the film once the modifications were carried out and the final material was submitted.

The film got stuck in a controversy after various Rajput groups alleged that it distorted history, a claim repeatedly denied by Bhansali.

As the anti-Padmavati protests spread across various states, the film&#39;s December 1 release was deferred as it did not have a clearance from the censor board.

Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code which deals with sedition (anti-nationalism) allows you to say anything, I repeat anything, so long as you do not instigate people to violence.

The Dalits who had gathered at Bhima-Koregaon near Pune on January 1 this year had done so to commemorate an English victory over a Maratha army. The celebration was expectedly dubbed “anti-national” by Hindu groups and one person died in the clashes that followed. Two hundred years ago, on January 1, 1818, the Marathas and the English had fought the third and the last of the Anglo-Maratha wars. The English won, thereby, consolidating their rule over India. Panel member had insights & also some reservations regarding claimed historical events & socio-cultural aspects which were duly discussed at length: CBFC #Padmavati — ANI (@ANI) December 30, 2017 × Relevant modifications have also been suggested in the song Ghoomar. The certificate will be issued once all relevant modifications are made. Bhansali's Padmavati has been marred by controversies owing to its historical roots to legends like the Queen of Chittor, Rani Padmini; the King of Mewar, and the powerful ruler of the Khilji dynasty, Alauddin Khilji. The movie has been facing protests from various groups for allegedly tampering with historical facts. The CBFC decided to put in place a special panel considering the complexities and concerns revolving around the film. CBFCs decision was communicated to the producers and the director of the film at the feedback session after the screening. Team Padmavati is reported to be in agreement with CBFC's decision. Bhansali Productions had previously requested the CBFC to facilitate Padmavati's screening for a panel of historians/academicians and members of the Rajput community. The final 3D application of the movie was submitted to the board on the November 28. This is not the first time when the CBFC had to arrange for a special panel to clear a film. Ashutosh Gowariker's period drama, Jodha Akbar, 2008, and Prakash Jha's political masterpiece, Aarakshan, 2011, also met with similar circumstances.

WION Evening News Brief, December 30, 2017

Much has been discussed about Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s film Padmavati and its impending release, but no clear consensus has been achieved so far. Now the Censor Board has sought the opinion of two veteran historians from Jaipur on the film and invited them to view the film and&nbsp;

These historians are Professor B.L. Gupta and Prof R.S. Khangarot.

While Gupta is a professor of history in Rajasthan Vishwavidhyala and has written numerous books on India during the medieval period, Khangarot is principal of Agrawal College.

The six-member panel will also have former royals including <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-cbfc-invites-mewar-royal-family-to-help-it-certify-padmavati-27482" target="_blank">Vishvaraj Singh of the Mewar royal family.</a> The panel will help CBFC in certifying the film, reports suggest.&nbsp;

Speaking to a news agency, Khangarot said, said the entire tussle related to the movie is not between the Karni Sena and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but between him and history and hence &quot;once we watch the film, it will be clear if history has been tampered with or not&quot;.

Meanwhile, sources at the Censor board have claimed that Bhansali had created problems for himself and his film when, while submitting his film for reviewing, he claimed that the film was based on certain historical facts.&nbsp;

But soon after the controversy around the film&#39;s release broke out, Bhansali had met a special panel at the capital and stated that the film was based on Jayasi&#39;s poem Padmavat.&nbsp;

The film Padmavati has been embroiled in controversy ever since the film&#39;s shooting began. Members of fringe outfit Rajput Karni Sena had attacked filmmaker Bhansali and vandalised the sets in January 2017. They had raised objection against an alleged dream scene featuring Allaudin Khilji and Queen Padmini- which the makers have categorically denied.&nbsp;

Several royal families in Rajasthan have also raised an objection to the film&#39;s content as they feel it dishonours the legacy of Rani Padmavati.&nbsp;

Many historians have argued that Padmavati is a work of fiction- first appearing in Malik Muhammad Jayasi&#39;s poem Padmavat.&nbsp;

So far five state government has <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-padmavati-row-after-madhya-pradesh-gujarat-bans-the-film-24851" target="_blank">banned</a> the film from being screened in their respective states including&nbsp;Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.&nbsp;

Erstwhile royal of Udaipur, Vishvaraj Singh, has expressed reservation about being a part of the committee, which has been formed to examine matters relating to the controversial movie Padmavati.

Singh, a member of the Mewar royal family, was invited by Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief, Prasoon Joshi, to be a part of the proposed committee to assist it in the process of certifying Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s magnum-opus.

In a letter dated December 22, Singh said he would be `happy` to meet Joshi but also stated, &quot;I have very strong reservations about seeing the film as to my mind it will open a Pandora`s box of new and pointless discussions. Owing to the manner in which the film`s production has progressed from its very inception and seeing to how related matters have developed, I would insist on a formal clarification of the points raised by me before I make a decision regarding being on the Committee.&quot;

Singh further termed the film as an embodiment of `unprofessional and unethical style of functioning.`&quot;I cannot help but observe that all this extra effort is going into presenting a product that has been discredited and one that from the very beginning only exemplifies an unprofessional and unethical style of functioning,&quot; Singh wrote while concluding the letter.

As per reports, Singh had earlier written to the CBFC for clarifications on certain matters of the film.&nbsp;

Padmavati row: Udaipur royal not keen on being a part of the reviewing committee

Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has now asked the Mewar royal family to join a panel that would help it certify&nbsp;Sanjay Leela Bhansali&rsquo;s period drama Padmavati.

This comes after the film was postponed by the censor board when several Rajput factions <a href="http://www.wionews.com/videos/rajasthan-body-found-hanging-at-nahargarh-fort-in-jaipur-threat-note-on-rocks-also-seen-6922" target="_blank">protested</a> vehemently on the portrayal of their historically revered queen &#39;Rani Padmini&#39; in the film. On Thursday,&nbsp;Prasoon Joshi, the chief of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), called Vishvaraj Singh of the Mewar royal family&nbsp;with the request.

Singh of the Mewar royal family spoke to a leading daily about the issue and said that he sought&nbsp;clarifications on certain aspects of the film that stars Deepika Padukone as queen Padmini, considered by Rajputs as a symbol of honour.

A section of historians, however, doubt the existence of the queen and say she is a fictional character first portrayed in a 16th-century poem as having committed Jauhar, the medieval practice in which female royals walked into funeral fires to embrace death over being taken captive by an opponent ruler.&nbsp;

Earlier, Rajput groups staged violent<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/padmavati-controversy-protests-in-gujarat-maharashtra-24034" target="_blank"> protests</a> all across the country and stopped shooting of the film on several locations, allegedly over <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/padmavati-row-sanjay-leela-bhansali-releases-video-denies-filming-any-dream-sequence-between-rani-padmavati-and-allaudin-khilji-23868" target="_blank">rumours</a> that the director included a romantic scene between the queen and Allauddin Khilji, the Delhi emperor who attacked Mewar&rsquo;s capital Chittorgarh.

Vishvaraj Singh said he has written a letter to Joshi saying he will be able to accept or decline the offer only after some clarifications.

He was quoted:&nbsp;&ldquo;It has been reported to be a fantasy at some place and historical at others. We need clarity on under what genre the film is seeking certification.&quot;

Singh added, The reported involvement of historians in the process of certification so far establishes that the film is of historical relevance,&rdquo; he added.

Prasoon Joshi said earlier that film was once <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/cbfc-returns-padmavati-to-makers-says-application-incomplete-24482" target="_blank">sent back</a> to the producers after it was found that the column for stating whether it was a work of fiction or was based on historical facts was left blank.

Will not ban 'Padmavati', says Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh

The Bombay high court on&nbsp;Thursday slammed rightist group for asking ban on&nbsp;Sanjay Leela directed Padmavati and sending death threats to&nbsp;artists on Thursday.

Referring to the threats made to them, a bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and Bharati Dangre said that it was distressing to know that a person makes a feature film and several people work tirelessly towards it but are not able to release it because of continued threats.

The bench further asked that &ldquo;In which other country do you see threats given to artists and performers? What have we come to?&rdquo;&nbsp;

The court also emphasized that this was censorship of a different kind and it is damaging India&rsquo;s image.

Judges added that &ldquo;In this country, we have come to a situation where people cannot voice their opinions. Every time a person says he or she wants to voice their opinion, somebody or a fringe group says they would not allow it. This does not augur well for the state.&rdquo;&nbsp;

&ldquo;What concerns us is India&rsquo;s image and reputation as a democratic country. We are the largest democracy. We cannot take pride in the happenings of such incidents a day in and day out. We are cutting a very sorry figure,&rdquo; the judges said.

Judge also stressed on the fact that if this is happening to well-financed people and what would happen to the poor?

The strong remarks were made while the judges were hearing a petition filed by family members of Dabholkar and Pansare.&nbsp;

The court also slammed CBI and CID for not arresting the main suspects of the murder of Dabholkar who was killed in 2013 and Pansare who was killed in 2015.

&quot;We cannot allow such serious matters to linger for years. We cannot allow constitutional rights to be taken away. Enough damage has been caused already. Has any senior official from the two agencies bothered to find out why the probe is not getting any head away?&quot; the court asked.

The case has now been posted for next hearing on December 21.

According to reports, Padmavati may release in February after its producers decided to postpone the movie.

Bombay High Court slams rightist group seeking ban on Padmavati

Saif Ali Khan&#39;s Kaalakaandi has generated a lot of curiosity ever since the makers have released its first trailer. A dark comedy by Akshat Verma, it has Saif Ali Khan playing a madcap living his life to the fullest after he learns he is diagnosed with stomach cancer.&nbsp;

The film was initially to release in 2017. But the censor board raised objections regarding some of its content and cleared it only now. The film is now scheduled to release on January 12th. But speculations are rife that Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s Padmavati may also release on the same date. Would Saif&#39;s film stand a chance at the Box Office if such a situation arises?&nbsp;

&quot;If Padmavati comes in [on that day], we will think of shifting our release date. I hope we don&rsquo;t have to do that. Kaalakaandi is a film I am proud of,&rdquo; Saif Ali Khan said to the media during the trailer launch event of the film.&nbsp;
Saif&#39;s last few films haven&#39;t worked at the Box Office and the actor is aware of it. &quot;It&rsquo;s easy to think that people no longer want to see me in a film. But I don&rsquo;t do that. I get my confidence back every time, irrespective of whether my film works or not. I&rsquo;ll keep working and hopefully, things will fall into place,&quot;<a href="http://www.mid-day.com/articles/saif-ali-khan-will-shift-kaalakaandi-release-if-padmavati-hits-theatres/18803175">Mid-day</a> was quoted Saif&nbsp;as saying.&nbsp;

The actor is also okay with the idea if both Kaalakaandi and Padmavati release on the same day. &quot;It would have been nice to see Kaalakaandi releasing with Padmavati, as it shows that we have a film industry, which makes different kinds of movies. Recently, we saw Secret Superstar and Golmaal Again releasing on the same day and both films did well. Personally, I feel it&#39;s a good time to have films releasing alongside one another. But filmmakers are wary about it and you need to take that into consideration.&quot;

Kaalakaandi also features Deepak Dobriyal, Vijay Raaz, Shobhita Dhulipala and Kunal Roy Kapur.

On the evening of 3 December 1971, at about&nbsp;5:40 pm, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) launched surprise per-emptive strikes on eleven airfields in north-western India, including Agra, which was 300 miles (480 km) from the border. At the time of this attack, the Taj Mahal was camouflaged with a forest of twigs and leaves and draped with burlap because its marble glowed like a white beacon in the moonlight.

The marble&#39;s shine is less provocative these days, not because the structure decided to protest against the disparaging debate of why it could not be part of the state&#39;s tourism booklet but because it suffocates from the poor quality of&nbsp;debates on issues of air pollution. The debate is seasonal and the yearly trend is almost a decade old.

Portrayal of women in 'Padmavati' is reason behind ban: Gujarat CM

Actor Juhi Chawla has said people should not flare up and give threats to Deepika Padukone for starring in Padmavati.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s Padmavati&nbsp;has been mired in controversies over its release with several outfits alleging that history has been &quot;distorted&quot; in the movie.

Both, Bhansali and Deepika have received death threats for being a part of the film.

Asked about how she sees death threats being given to another actor, Juhi told reporters, &quot;I am not speaking of &#39;Padmavati&#39; the film but the threats were not right. You watch the same heroine in other films, go crazy for her, you love her so much, she has a tremendous fan following. Then, to threaten her like this, I didn&#39;t feel was right.&quot;

Juhi was speaking at the launch of Jyotin Goel&#39;s book Bheem- Destiny&#39;s Warrior&nbsp;last evening here.

Various Rajput groups and political leaders have accused Bhansali of distorting history by filming a romantic dream sequence between Rajput queen Padmini and Sultan Alauddin Khilji, a claim repeatedly denied by the filmmaker.
Historians are divided on whether Padmavati actually existed.

Juhi said people should react to things with sensitivity and not flare up in anger.

&quot;At the end of the day, films are made by directors, by the team (and) you&#39;re playing a part. Just for that reason, I&#39;d say a little sensitivity is (needed) and people should have patience. Not flare up and say things like that, that too to a woman.&quot;

Juhi said she recently met Rajmata of Jaipur who said what one shows in films can be there for generations to learn from and hence one should be careful.

&quot;I was attending a wedding in Jaipur where I met Rajmata ji. She was talking about films, she said something which struck me. How many of us really read books or are keen to learn history, but everyone watches films. Whatever you show on screen stays in the memory of people, this is what she said.

&quot;It wasn&#39;t related to Padmavati&nbsp;but a general remark on impact of films,&quot; she said.

The Deepika-Shahid Kapoor-Ranveer Singh starrer was earlier scheduled to release on December 1. The makers deferred the release till they receive a certificate from the CBFC. They recently applied for 3D certification.
