A water temperature buoy in the Everglades National Park recorded a high of 101.19 degrees Fahrenheit (38.44 Celsius). The temperature was recorded in the waters of Manatee Bay. Other buoys nearby topped 100ºF (38ºC) and the upper 90s.

According to United States' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), normal water temperatures for the area during this time of the year should be between 73ºF and 88ºF (23ºC and 31ºC). The NOAA published the findings from the National Data Buoy Centre.

These reading have been obtained close on the heels of previous warnings over heating up of Florida's waters. Prolonged heat has continued to bake other parts of the country.

Global, human-driven climate change is fuelling extremes in the weather. The growing frequency and intensity of severe weather is considered to be symptomatic of climate change.

United Nations' World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said earlier this month that temperatures in the global seas have reached monthly record highs since May. This is also driven in part by El Nino weather phenomenon.

The WMO and NOAA have both said that the temperatures like those recorded in South Florida can prove to be deadly for marine life. This in turn can threaten ocean ecosystems. The rising temperatures can also impact human food supplies and livelihoods of those who depend on the seas to earn their money.

As he worked his knife to filet fish hauled into Key Largo on Tuesday, fishing boat captain Dustin Hansel said the catch has been getting "slower and slower" for the past five summers. He's also been seeing more dead fish in waters around Key Largo.

"As far as all of our bay waters, any near-shore waters, everything is super, super hot," Hansel told Reuters.

Earlier this month, NOAA warned that warmer water around Florida can supercharge hurricanes and tropical storms. Such storms gain more energy over warmer waters. Rising temperatures are also severely stressing coral reefs, the agency said.

Ocean temperature around Florida reaches hot tub levels

Parts of the North Atlantic are witnessing an “exceptional” marine heatwave, with the coasts of the United Kingdom and Ireland recording the highest sea-surface temperatures.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that April and May reported the highest ocean surface temperatures since record-keeping began in 1850.

It said that parts of the North Atlantic have recorded Category 4 marine heat wave – defined as “extreme” — with water temperature in some areas reporting 5 degree&nbsp;Celsius (9 Fahrenheit) hotter than usual.

The UK Met Office said that temperatures in the North Atlantic in May were around 1.25 degree&nbsp;Celsius (2.25 Fahrenheit) above average.

“The eastern Atlantic, from Iceland down to the tropics, is much warmer than average. But areas around parts of north-western Europe, including parts of the UK, have among some of the highest sea-surface temperatures relative to average,” Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s chief scientist, said in a&nbsp;statement.

<h2>Situation alarming</h2>

Scientists have sounded alarm saying that such climatic phenomena might have adverse effects on marine life.

The Gulf Coast in Texas earlier this month saw thousands of dead fish washed up ashore, as scientists linked the deaths to rising ocean temperatures, saying that warmer water cannot hold more oxygen. In 2021, an extreme heat wave cooked around a billion shellfish to death&nbsp;on Canada’s West Coast.

Experts have expressed shock saying that called the spike in Atlantic heat wave was “totally unprecedented.”

Scientists say there are a plethora of factors behind the rise of sea surface temperatures, with the primary reason being El Niño, a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It tends to have a warming effect globally.

Other factors that also may play a role include a lack of dust from the Sahara, which usually helps cool the region by reflecting away sunlight.

“Weaker than average winds have reduced the extent of dust in the region’s atmosphere potentially leading to higher temperatures,” Albert Klein Tank, the head of the Met Office Hadley Centre, said in a statement.

“Weaker winds may also have helped increase temperatures, as strong westerly winds typically cool the ocean surface,” Rantanen said.

El Nino, which occurred from 2014 to 2016, coincided with the second-hottest worldwide averaged ocean temperatures, according to NOAA data. The data is mostly generated by satellite observations, although it is additionally supported by measurements taken by boats and buoys. The polar areas are not included in the statistics.
