The US and the UK are worried that Russia may have shared nuclear secrets with Iran in return for the latest reports claiming that Tehran had supplied ballistics missiles to Moscow in its war against Ukraine.&nbsp;

President Joe Biden and UK&nbsp;Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during their meeting in Washington DC, acknowledged that Moscow and Tehran were tightening military cooperation with the latter in the process of enriching enough uranium to complete its long-held goal of developing a nuclear bomb.&nbsp;

A similar sentiment was shared by US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, during a meeting with his UK counterpart, David Lammy.&nbsp;

“For its part, Russia is sharing technology that Iran seeks – this is a two-way street – including on nuclear issues as well as some space information,” Blinken said.&nbsp;

Notably, Iran struck a deal in 2015 to stop making nuclear weapons in exchange for relief from the crushing sanctions. However, the agreement was abandoned in 2018 by the then-US president,&nbsp;Donald Trump.&nbsp;

Since then, Tehran has breached agreed limits on the quantity of enriched uranium it can hold with Western countries wary that it was close to developing the ultimate weapon.&nbsp;

The European Union as well as the US had levelled the allegations last week with the former claiming that it was considering fresh sanctions on Tehran if it was confirmed that Russia received the said missiles.&nbsp;

"We are looking further into it with our member states and if confirmed, this delivery would represent a substantive material escalation in Iran's support for Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine,"&nbsp;EU spokesman Peter Stano said.

Moscow did not issue a denial when asked about the allegations and instead preferred to comment on the growing relationship with Tehran.&nbsp;

"We have seen this report, it is not every time that this kind of information is true,"&nbsp;Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"Iran is our important partner, we are developing our trade and economic relations, we are developing our cooperation and dialogue in all possible areas, including the most sensitive areas."

US signs major nuclear deal with Philippines, to export tech, material for energy infra

A UN nuclear watchdog report has revealed that Iran's estimated stockpile of enriched uranium had reached more than 22 times the limit set out in the 2015 accord between Tehran and world powers.

According to a confidential International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report seen by AFP, Iran's total enriched uranium stockpile was estimated at 4,486.8 kilogrammes (9,891.7 pounds) as of October 28, up by 693.1 kilogrammes from August. The limit in the 2015 deal was set at 202.8 kilogrammes.

Meanwhile, the IAEA on Wednesday (November 15) expressed displeasure over Iran's decision to expel some of its inspectors, calling it&nbsp;"extreme and unjustified". The nuclear watchdog has said that the decision by the Islamic Republic has 'directly and seriously affected' its work. This has further strained relations between the UN body and Iran.

European countries have upped their efforts in recent months to secure energy resources and reduce dependence on Russia.&nbsp;

Under a 10-year agreement signed Friday, Framatome, a subsidiary of French energy giant EDF, will supply nuclear fuel to Kozloduy's unit 5 reactor from early 2025.&nbsp;

Last week, Kozloduy signed a similar contract with Westinghouse Electric Sweden to deliver nuclear fuel for its other operational reactor, unit 6, from 2024.&nbsp;

Bulgaria's interim energy minister Rosen Hristov said,&nbsp;"With two agreements in place, we have achieved full diversification of nuclear fuel deliveries."

"The aim is security of deliveries and safe operation," he added.&nbsp;

Westinghouse's nuclear fuel has yet to be approved for use by Bulgaria's Nuclear Regulatory Agency.&nbsp;

However, Framatome's fuel is identical with the one currently used in Kozloduy as it is being produced under licence from the nuclear unit of Russia's Rosatom, Tvel.&nbsp;

Bulgaria's current contract with Tvel expires in end-2025.&nbsp;

A video of US President Joe Biden saying that the Iran Nuclear Deal is "dead" is making the rounds on the internet. Apparently, the leader last month said that the multi-state deal to limit Tehran's nuclear deal is dead. However, he refused to formally announce that.

The video that surfaced on Tuesday has been shared far and wide. It is believed to have been shot on November 3 during the US President's visit to California.

In it, Biden can be seen responding to a woman, who can be seen wearing a hair ribbon in Iranian flag colours. The woman asks him to announce that the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is no longer in effect. Biden, however, says no.

The White House hasn't denied the video, and national security spokesperson John Kirby said that nobody was questioning its authenticity. He added that Washington still wants to restore the JCPOA but that right now due to the Ukraine war, it's not a priority.

"The president's comments are very much in line with everything we've been saying about the JCPOA, which is just not our focus right now," said Kirby.

"There is no progress happening with respect to the Iran deal now. We don't anticipate any progress anytime in the near future."&nbsp;

"We simply don't see a deal coming together anytime soon, while Iran continues to kill its own citizens and is selling UAVs to Russia," he said, referring to the so-called anti-Hijab protests in Tehran and the government's campaign to repress months-long demonstrations over its treatment of women.

"President Biden, could you please announce that the JCPOA is dead," asks the woman, as Biden passes by shaking hands.

"No," he replies.&nbsp;

"Why not?" the woman retorts.

"It is dead, but we are not going to announce it," says Biden adding, "Long story."

The woman, and others next to her, then urge him to not make deals with the Iran government and say "they don't represent us."&nbsp;

"They are not our government," adds another.

"I know they don't represent you. But they will have a nuclear weapon," Biden responds. The video ends here.

This comes as even after months of pressure Iran refuses to bow to pressure and accept the final stipulations of the agreement that would revive the JCPOA deal.

The United States pulled out of the agreement under the leadership of former President Donald Trump in 2018.&nbsp;Talks towards the revival of the 2015 deal have been on since April 2021 and as per AFP at one point early this year, Iran and US came really close to a deal.

However, recent months haven't seen any progress and in September, European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned that the parties were actually "diverging."

The White House hasn't denied the video, and national security spokesperson John Kirby said that nobody was questioning its authenticity. He added that Washington still wants to restore the JCPOA but that right now due to the Ukraine war, it's not a priority. Iran's atomic energy agency said on Saturday (December 3) the nation has started the construction of a new nuclear plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan.&nbsp;

In a televised remark, Mohammad Eslami, who is the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, announced that the construction has been started.&nbsp;

The announcement regarding the construction of a 300-megawatt Karun power plant in the Darkhovin district of Khuzestan came when the United Nations nuclear chief said that Iran ties are needed to get back on track.&nbsp;

Eslami added that the construction of the plant will take around seven years. He further mentioned that project is expected to cost between $1.5 billion and $2 billion.&nbsp;

He said that the power plant was "first set to be constructed by a French company." However, the company refused and backed out of its "commitments" after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.&nbsp;

He said: "Later, other countries avoided cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran, because of the sanctions."&nbsp;

He also raised concerns over a recent announcement by Tehran that it was boosting its enrichment capacity.&nbsp;

The nuclear deal was signed in 2015 and Iran agreed to a pact with six major powers to limit its nuclear program. It was harder for Iran to obtain a weapon in return for relief from economic sanctions.&nbsp;

Iran is already enriching uranium elsewhere to up to 60 per cent&nbsp;purity, which is higher than the 20 per cent&nbsp;it produced prior to the 2015 agreement with major nations to curb enrichment at 3.67 per cent, but still far short the 90 per cent&nbsp;needed for material suitable for use in bombs.

ISNA news agency reported, "In a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran has informed the agency that it has started enriching uranium to 60% purity at Fordow site using IR-6 advanced centrifuges."&nbsp;

he IAEA's 35-nation Board of Governors on Thursday adopted a resolution directing Iran to expeditiously assist the organization's inquiry into uranium traces discovered at three undeclared locations.&nbsp;

Iran is only permitted to use first-generation IR-1 centrifuges under the 2015 nuclear agreement with six major world powers, but after United States'&nbsp;withdrawal in 2018, Tehran installed cascades of more effective advanced centrifuges, such as the IR-2m, IR-4, and IR-6.&nbsp;

According to a&nbsp;report from Reuters, Tehran was preparing to use IR-6 centrifuges at the Fordow site, which are capable of switching between different levels of uranium enrichment, in order to step up its uranium enrichment.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday (November 14) said any new proposal will not help revive a nuclear deal with Iran and that a "new framework" would likely be needed. He was speaking with France Inter radio.

He was asked whether he believed talks on aimed at renewing an agreement between Tehran and world powers could be revived after significant setbacks in recent months, Macron said: "I would still be very cautious."

"I don't think there will be new proposals which can be made right now [to save the nuclear deal]", he added.

A nuclear deal was struck between Iran and world powers in 2015. But former US president Donald Trump unilaterally took the US out of the deal. Talks to revive the deal have been on for more than a year but there has been little progress.

Macron pointed at the current political situation in protest-hit Iran. He said that 'fragilised' likelihood of reaching a deal with the country.

Western powers last week said it was "essential and urgent" for Iran to explain uranium traces found at three sites in the country. Iran has agreed to a visit by the U.N. nuclear watchdog this month to provide answers on the matter.

"Iran is waiting to receive the response from other parties, notably that of the American government," he said during his weekly news conference in Tehran.

Kanani's remarks have followed the United States' remarks last Thursday. The US said that Iran's latest response on reviving the nuclear deal was 'not constructive'.

The nuclear deal was struck between Iran and other world powers including the US in 2015. But former US president Donald Trump unilaterally took US out of the deal. Talks have been going on to restore the nuclear deal.

"We can confirm that we have received Iran's response through the EU," State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said late Thursday in Washington.&nbsp; 
"We are studying it and will respond through the EU, but unfortunately it is not constructive."

Kanani said on Monday that Tehran had "never received a response... saying that its position was not constructive".

He maintained that Iran's response was "constructive, clear and legal".

"Iran is trying to cancel sanctions to economically benefit the Iranian nation and this is one of its top priorities," Kanani said.

On August 8, the European Union (EU) put forward what it called was final text to restore the 2015 deal.

Talks to revive the 2015 accord known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action have been ongoing in Vienna since April 2021.

Talks have been going on to restore the nuclear deal. "We can confirm that we have received Iran's response through the EU," State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said late Thursday in Washington. "We are studying it and will respond through the EU, but unfortunately it is not constructive." Kanani said on Monday that Tehran had "never received a response... saying that its position was not constructive". He maintained that Iran's response was "constructive, clear and legal". "Iran is trying to cancel sanctions to economically benefit the Iranian nation and this is one of its top priorities," Kanani said. On August 8, the European Union (EU) put forward what it called was final text to restore the 2015 deal. Talks to revive the 2015 accord known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action have been ongoing in Vienna since April 2021. Haven't got response from the US, says Iran over nuclear deal

The Iranian Navy reportedly seized two US unmanned drone vessels for a brief period in the Red Sea before releasing them, in the second such incident this week.&nbsp;

According to state TV, the Iranian navy's "Jamaran destroyer encountered several American military unmanned research vessels on the international shipping route on Thursday while carrying out a counter-terrorism mission in the Red Sea.”

It added that the navy, "after warning an American destroyer twice, seized the two drone vessels to prevent possible accidents".

The navy then released two vessels in a safe area after securing the passage of international shipping, the state broadcaster said, while airing the clip of the two purported US vessels being released by Iranian forces on board a ship, AFP reported.

Confirming the development, the US Navy said its drone vessels were taking pictures of the surrounding environment and had been in the vicinity of the southern Red Sea for more than 200 days.

"At around 2 pm (local time) on Sept. 1, U.S. 5th Fleet detected the Iranian ship approaching both unmanned vessels and removing them from the water," the US Navy said in a statement.

The statement added that the two destroyers operating nearby—the USS Nitze and USS Delbert D. Black—"remained on scene communicating with the Iranian warship to de-escalate the situation".

The statement further stated that the US Navy vessels were released at around 8 am the following day.

The recent incident comes in the backdrop of nuclear negotiations with Iran that appear to be faltering.

The US said it received Iran's response to the European Union's framework to restore the nuclear deal, but officials in a statement termed Iran's response as " not constructive."&nbsp;

Iran briefly seizes two US Navy drone vessels in second incident this week in Red Sea

Iran has submitted a document to the European Union (EU) seeking&nbsp;to finalise the 2015 nuclear accord with world powers, The Guardian has reported.

Nasser Kanaani, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, has reportedly said that the latest text submitted on Friday presented “a constructive approach with the aim of finalising the negotiations”.

The latest Iranian document is part of the series of exchanges with the US via mediators from the EU aimed at tweaking a draft agreement presented on August 8.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Wednesday had hoped for a resolution within days to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.

Tehran gave its first response to the draft on August 15, which was followed by a response from Washington.

Meanwhile, the US has confirmed receiving the latest response from Iran on reviving the nuclear deal, however it found the text not "constructive".

"We can confirm that we have received Iran's response through the EU," US state department spokesman Vedant Patel was quoted as saying by AFP late Thursday in Washington.

Iran sends ‘constructive’ response to finalise nuclear deal, US rejects it

Iran wants stronger guarantees included in the text put forward by the EU aiming to salvage Tehran's landmark 2015&nbsp;nuclear&nbsp;deal with world powers, foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Wednesday.

"We are thinking about how to reach a strong text on the issue of the guarantee, and to obtain stronger guarantees," he told a joint news conference in Moscow with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

"My colleagues are carefully examining the text of the American side," Amir-Abdollahian said of Washington's response to Tehran's suggestions on the EU text that was submitted on August 8.

"We want to reinforce in the text the idea that the International Atomic Energy Agency concentrates on its technical task and moves away from its political role," he said.

The United States had been adamant that Tehran cooperate with the IAEA to clear up suspicions about earlier work at three undeclared sites.

In June, the IAEA's board of governors adopted a resolution censuring Iran for failing to adequately explain the previous discovery of traces of enriched uranium at three sites not declared by Tehran as having hosted&nbsp;nuclear&nbsp;activities.

On Monday, President Ebrahim Raisi said reviving the atomic deal would be pointless unless the UN&nbsp;nuclear&nbsp;watchdog put an end to its probe of three undeclared sites in the Islamic republic.

The 2015 accord between Iran and six world powers -- Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States -- gave Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its&nbsp;nuclear&nbsp;programme.

Formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the agreement aimed to prevent Iran from developing a&nbsp;nuclear&nbsp;weapon -- something it has always denied wanting to do.

But the US unilaterally withdrew from the deal under then president Donald Trump in 2018 and proceeded to reimpose biting sanctions, prompting Tehran to pull back from its own commitments.&nbsp;

Last week, amid rising hopes of a revived deal, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi in an interview with CNN rejected the idea of the agency closing its probe on the undeclared sites without receiving answers.

"When it comes to guarantees, resolving outstanding issues related to the IAEA is also of serious concern to us," Amir-Abdollahian said on Wednesday.

"If we can reinforce the existing text, reaching an agreement will not be far from being achieved," he added.
