The North Korean table tennis pair of Kim Kum-yong and Ri Jing-sik, who won the silver medal in the mixed team event at the Paris Olympic Games 2024, could face disciplinary action for smiling while clicking a selfie with rivals – the gold medallist Chinese team and third-placed South Korean team at the podium.

As per a report in The Telegraph, Kim Kum-yong is under scrutiny for smiling during the victory photo with South Korean athletes, whom North Korea consider their fierce rivals.

The photo of athletes from two rival nations clicking selfies and smiling on the Olympic podium went viral on social media, with fans worldwide calling it a ‘beautiful moment in Olympic history.’

However, that didn’t sit well with North Korea, where leader Kim Jong Un’s regime strictly controls interactions with neighbours South Korea and others.

Besides, since the team returned home on August 15, they have been subjected to a month-long ‘cleanse’, done on purpose to remove any influence of ‘non-socialist’ culture, per reports in the Daily NK. This process, however, is managed by North Korea’s Ministry of Sport, including a three-stage ideological assessment designed to ensure the athletes align with state-approved values.

The North Korean athletes were asked to avoid any interaction with their South Korean counterparts or athletes from other countries at the Summer Games in Paris. Violation of these directives would lead to punishments, although the degree of penalties remains unclear.

However, historical precedents suggest severe consequences for disobeying orders.

North Korea to punish Table Tennis players for 'smiling' with rivals on Olympic podium

North Korea vowed Saturday to advance its nuclear capabilities, reacting to a report that the United States had revised its own nuclear strategic plan.

The country will "bolster up its strategic strength in every way to control and eliminate all sorts of security challenges that may result from Washington's revised plan", the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

The New York Times reported this week that a US plan approved by President Joe Biden in March was to prepare for possible coordinated nuclear confrontations with Russia, China and North Korea.

The highly classified plan for the first time reorients Washington's deterrent strategy to focus on China's rapid expansion in its nuclear arsenal, the Times said.

KCNA said North Korea's foreign ministry "expresses serious concern over and bitterly denounces and rejects the behavior of the US".

Pyongyang, which has declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear weapons power, has described allegations of supplying weapons to Russia as "absurd".

However, it did thank Russia for using its United Nations veto in March to effectively end monitoring of sanctions violations just as UN experts were starting to probe alleged arms transfers.

Chinese man invades North Korea in a never-thought way, flies drone across the border

Recent reports indicate a reorientation of US strategy to target China's rapidly expanding nuclear capabilities specifically. President Joe Biden has reportedly directed American forces to ready themselves for potential coordinated nuclear conflict, which he fears will come from Russia, China, and North Korea. An explosive report by The New York Times reveals that earlier this year, in March, Biden sanctioned a highly classified nuclear strategic plan which specifically focused on the Chinese threat.
