Two women in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh were nearly killed after a truck driver attempted to bury them under a massive load of gravel on Saturday (Jul 20). The attack took place in a small village called Hinauta in the Rewa district of the state with the horrific video of the incident going viral on social media.&nbsp;

The women,&nbsp;Mamta Pandey and Asha, were protesting against road construction in the area, which they said was coming up on their leased land. As they protested, the situation escalated.&nbsp;

The driver of the dumper truck, Vipin Pandey, acting on the behest of a local strongman, arrived with gravel and dumped it all on the two women who were nearly buried under it.&nbsp;

US Secret Service (USSS) denied requests for additional resources and manpower to protect former president Donald Trump, a damning report in the Washington Post has&nbsp;claimed. After initially denying such claims in the immediate aftermath of the&nbsp;July 13 assassination attempt, USSS has now admitted that certain requesters by Trump's team were turned down in the last two years.&nbsp;

The ex-president's team had requested for more agents and magnetometers at&nbsp;large public events he attended, as well as extra snipers for outdoor venues.&nbsp;

The repeated rejections led to long-standing tensions between Trump, his top aides and his security detail against Secret Service leadership, the report added.&nbsp;

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service admitted that new information had surfaced indicating that the agency's headquarters may have in fact denied requests for additional security from Trump's detail.&nbsp;

“The Secret Service has a vast, challenging, and intricate mission. Every day we work in a dynamic threat environment to ensure our protectees are safe and secure across multiple events, travel, and other difficult environments," said&nbsp;Guglielmi.&nbsp;

Trump Organization's former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Allen Weisselberg was released from New York City’s Rikers Island jail on Friday (Jul 19) after serving a sentence for lying under oath, the prison correctional officials confirmed.&nbsp;

Weisselberg served 100 days behind bars for lying during an investigation into the former United States president's real estate business.&nbsp;

“Allen Weisselberg accepted responsibility for his conduct and now looks forward to the end of this life-altering experience and to returning to his family and his retirement,” his attorney, Seth Rosenberg, said.&nbsp;

Rosenberg added that Weisselberg had been released from custody and “reunited with his family".&nbsp;

In&nbsp;October last year, the former Trump Organization&nbsp;CFO&nbsp;on the witness stand said that he was not involved in an incorrect valuation of Trump's Manhattan penthouse. However, Forbes later published a report accusing Weisselberg of lying on the stand.&nbsp;

Trump's 2015 and 2016 financial statements valued the former president's Manhattan townhouse at $327 million based on its stated size of more than 30,000 square feet, nearly three times the actual size.

The civil fraud case culminated in a $454 million penalty imposed on the former president. The judge also imposed a fine worth $1.1 million, including interest, on the former executive.&nbsp;He was also barred for three years from serving in top leadership positions in any New York corporation or business entity.

Even as the enclave's health ministry reported the casualties wrought during Israel's attack on Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a news conference said that it remains unclear if the commander was killed.

"Either way, we will get to the whole of the leadership of Hamas," he told the news conference.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, while announcing the uncertainty around Deif and another Hamas commander's killing, promised continued pressure on Hamas leadership to improve chances of a hostage deal.

As per Al Jazeera, Hamas has denied Deif's death. A senior official reportedly told the publication that Israeli claims were false and merely a justification for the deadly strike, which happens to be the deadliest Israeli attack on Gaza in weeks.

<h2>What is the Hannibal Protocol?</h2>

This controversial directive as per reports was used by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) until 2016. The protocol has just one goal: to prevent the capture of soldiers by enemy soldiers, even at the cost of hostages' lives.

According to "Forensic Architecture, Violence at the Threshold of Detectability" a book by Eyal Weizman, one version of the Hannibal Protocol says that "the kidnapping must be stopped by all means, even at the price of striking and harming our own forces."

Reportedly, at 11:22 am, about five hours after the attack began, a directive was issued to Israel’s Gaza division stating, "Not a single vehicle can return to Gaza."

This message, as per the Haaretz report quoting a source, meant preventing any vehicles from returning, regardless of potential casualties.

"Everyone knew by then that such vehicles could be carrying kidnapped civilians or soldiers … Everyone knew what it meant to not let any vehicles return to Gaza."

It is not known how many civilian or military casualties happened because of this order, however, documents and testimonies from soldiers and mid-senior level IDF officers suggest Hannibal protocol's use was "widespread".

Many Gazans, adults, and children are suffering from skin infections ranging from scabies to chicken pox, lice, impetigo, and other debilitating rashes.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 150,000 people in the Palestinian territory have contracted skin diseases in the squalid conditions into which displaced Gazans have been forced since the Israel-Hamas war erupted on October 7.

The mother of seven believes infections are inevitable.&nbsp;

"We cannot bathe our children as before. There are no hygiene and sanitary products for us to wash and clean the place. There's nothing."

He explained that the hot weather increases sweating and accumulation of dirt that causes rashes and allergies, which, if scratched, lead to infections. Furthermore, he warned that Gaza's children are already highly vulnerable to disease because their immune systems are compromised by malnutrition.

MSF doctors fear that other skin conditions, such as leishmaniasis, which can be fatal in its most virulent form, can also make an appearance among the millions of displaced Gazans.

As per the international agency, already 485,000 cases of diarrhoea have been reported.

The world is in the midst of the biggest election year in history with a little over half of the population headed to the polls, but it is also facing an uncertain time with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war as well as the rise in tensions in the Middle East due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.&nbsp;

Amid this chaotic time, a growing number of people are selectively avoiding news calling it depressing, often repetitive and boring, according to a recent global study.&nbsp;

<h2>Selected news avoidance at record-high</h2>

According to a report by Oxford University’s Reuters Institute, as many as four in 10 (39 per cent) people said that they sometimes or often avoid the news.&nbsp;

The annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report noted that while this has been a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/reuters-survey-reveals-people-are-increasingly-avoiding-news-heres-why-498272">growing trend observed for years now</a>, selected news avoidance is at its highest levels ever recorded.&nbsp;

This year’s report is based on the responses collected from a total of 94,943 adults across 47 countries by YouGov in January and February.

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, may have contributed to some of the record-high levels of news avoidance reported this time around, according to the Reuters Institute report.&nbsp;

While the overall interest in news has somewhat stabilised this year, as per the report,&nbsp;the number of people who said that they selectively avoid the news was up by three percentage points to 39 per cent. Notably, this number is 10 percentage points higher than it was in 2017.&nbsp;

The reason for this avoidance, as per the report, has not changed. People who say&nbsp;that they sometimes or often selectively avoid the news say it is often repetitive and boring.&nbsp;

However, others told the researchers that the negative nature of the news makes them feel “anxious and powerless.”

“You’ve had the pandemic (and) wars, so it’s a fairly natural reaction for people to turn away from the news, whether it’s to protect their mental health or simply wanting to get on with the rest of their lives,” the report’s lead author Nic Newman told BBC.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, around 39 per cent said that the news is not only depressing but relentless and they feel “worn out” by the amount these days.

<h2>Interest and trust in news</h2>

Notably, the historic election year has reportedly led to an increased interest in the news with notable rises observed in a handful of countries including the United States. However, the long-term trend is mostly down in every country except Finland, according to the report.

Overall, 46 per cent of people across the world said they are very or extremely interested in news.&nbsp;The number is down from the 63 per cent recorded in 2017. Women and young people make up a significant proportion of that decline, the Reuters report noted.

The trust in news, according to the report, remained stable at 40 per cent, four points lower than it was at the height of the pandemic.&nbsp;

<h2>People turn to social media</h2>

According to the report, a majority of the respondents continued to identify platforms including social media, aggregators, and search engines as their main gateway to online news. However, only 22 per cent identified news websites or apps as their main source of online news.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the audience for traditional news sources like newspapers or television has seen a sharp decline.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the report also noted a “strong shift” towards video-based platforms like YouTube and TikTok as well as Instagram. These platforms have become an important source of news since the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

The growing popularity and reach of social media can no longer be ignored, with politicians taking to TikTok and other networks to reach young voters - from the new Argentinian President Javier Milei who runs a successful TikTok account with 2.2 million followers, to US President Joe Biden whose campaign sparked controversy by joining the popular social media app despite it being banned on most devices used by the American government over security concerns.

However, YouTube and Facebook, according to the report remain the most important platforms for online news videos overall with the former being the go-to for those under 25. On the other hand, older viewers continued to watch their videos on news websites.&nbsp;

The report noted that while mainstream media and journalists often lead conversations on X and Facebook, they fail to garner attention on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok where online influencers and celebrities are prominent.&nbsp;

<h2>Concerns about misinformation,&nbsp;fake news&nbsp;</h2>

While more people have turned to social media for news, a majority of people in this important year of elections have said they are concerned about the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-how-ai-generated-propaganda-poses-a-real-threat-this-historic-election-year-694344">reliability of the content online</a>.&nbsp;

More than 50 countries across the world with a combined population of 4.2 billion are expected to hold national and/or local elections in 2024, making it the biggest election year in history.&nbsp;

In the US, while interest in news, due to the election, has risen by five percentage points, around 72 per cent of people said they are concerned about what is real and what is fake on the internet when it comes to online news, according to the report.

Similarly, in India, where the world’s largest general election recently concluded, 58 per cent of people shared the same concern.&nbsp;

Overall, six in 10 people (59 per cent) said they are concerned about what is real and what is fake on the internet in the context of online news.&nbsp;

<h2>Facebook, X become less popular in India</h2>

According to the annual report, the trust in news in India rose by three percentage points to 41 per cent.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, those surveyed expressed concerns about widespread misinformation via WhatsApp and other social media. Notably, India has the highest number of WhatsApp users in the world.&nbsp;

For young Indians, according to the report, the main source of news is often social media platforms.&nbsp;

Nearly half of respondents use YouTube (54 per cent) and WhatsApp (48 per cent) for news each week. Meanwhile, the popularity of social media platforms like Facebook and X has dropped in India, according to the report.&nbsp;

Furthermore, despite the general decline in news interest, newspapers (40 per cent) and television (46) remained popular platforms for accessing news for the respondents, particularly due to the general elections.&nbsp;

This year’s report is based on the responses collected from a total of 94,943 adults across 47 countries by YouGov in January and February. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, may have contributed to some of the record-high levels of news avoidance reported this time around, according to the Reuters Institute report. Notably, this number is 10 percentage points higher than it was in 2017. The reason for this avoidance, as per the report, has not changed. People who say that they sometimes or often selectively avoid the news say it is often repetitive and boring. However, others told the researchers that the negative nature of the news makes them feel “anxious and powerless.” “You’ve had the pandemic (and) wars, so it’s a fairly natural reaction for people to turn away from the news, whether it’s to protect their mental health or simply wanting to get on with the rest of their lives,” the report’s lead author Nic Newman told BBC. Meanwhile, around 39 per cent said that the news is not only depressing but relentless and they feel “worn out” by the amount these days. Interest and trust in news Notably, the historic election year has reportedly led to an increased interest in the news with notable rises observed in a handful of countries including the United States. However, the long-term trend is mostly down in every country except Finland, according to the report. Overall, 46 per cent of people across the world said they are very or extremely interested in news. The number is down from the 63 per cent recorded in 2017. Women and young people make up a significant proportion of that decline, the Reuters report noted. The trust in news, according to the report, remained stable at 40 per cent, four points lower than it was at the height of the pandemic. People turn to social media According to the report, a majority of the respondents continued to identify platforms including social media, aggregators, and search engines as their main gateway to online news. However, only 22 per cent identified news websites or apps as their main source of online news. On the other hand, the audience for traditional news sources like newspapers or television has seen a sharp decline. Meanwhile, the report also noted a “strong shift” towards video-based platforms like YouTube and TikTok as well as Instagram. These platforms have become an important source of news since the COVID-19 pandemic. The growing popularity and reach of social media can no longer be ignored, with politicians taking to TikTok and other networks to reach young voters - from the new Argentinian President Javier Milei who runs a successful TikTok account with 2.2 million followers, to US President Joe Biden whose campaign sparked controversy by joining the popular social media app despite it being banned on most devices used by the American government over security concerns. However, YouTube and Facebook, according to the report remain the most important platforms for online news videos overall with the former being the go-to for those under 25. On the other hand, older viewers continued to watch their videos on news websites. The report noted that while mainstream media and journalists often lead conversations on X and Facebook, they fail to garner attention on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok where online influencers and celebrities are prominent. Concerns about misinformation, fake news While more people have turned to social media for news, a majority of people in this important year of elections have said they are concerned about the reliability of the content online. More than 50 countries across the world with a combined population of 4.2 billion are expected to hold national and/or local elections in 2024, making it the biggest election year in history. In the US, while interest in news, due to the election, has risen by five percentage points, around 72 per cent of people said they are concerned about what is real and what is fake on the internet when it comes to online news, according to the report. Overall, six in 10 people (59 per cent) said they are concerned about what is real and what is fake on the internet in the context of online news. Facebook, X become less popular in India According to the annual report, the trust in news in India rose by three percentage points to 41 per cent. Meanwhile, those surveyed expressed concerns about widespread misinformation via WhatsApp and other social media. Notably, India has the highest number of WhatsApp users in the world. For young Indians, according to the report, the main source of news is often social media platforms. Nearly half of respondents use YouTube (54 per cent) and WhatsApp (48 per cent) for news each week. Meanwhile, the popularity of social media platforms like Facebook and X has dropped in India, according to the report. Furthermore, despite the general decline in news interest, newspapers (40 per cent) and television (46) remained popular platforms for accessing news for the respondents, particularly due to the general elections. The activists covered his face with an image of the animated character 'Wallace' from the "Wallace and Gromit" series, along with a speech bubble that read: "No cheese, Gromit. Look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms!".

<h2>Who is behind the act?</h2>

Campaign group Animal Rising has taken responsibility&nbsp;for this act which was aimed at protesting animal welfare standards on farms certified by the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), an animal charity of which Charles is a patron.

Footage released by Animal Rising show two supporters entering London's Philip Mould gallery and covering the king's face on the portrait with the cartoon image and adding the speech bubble.

Daniel Juniper, one of the activists involved in the portrait protest, expressed his rationale in a statement on the group's website. He said, "With King Charles being such a big fan of Wallace and Gromit, we couldn't think of a better way to draw his attention to the horrific scenes on RSPCA Assured farms."&nbsp;

He urged the king to "seriously reconsider if he wants to be associated with the awful suffering across farms being endorsed by the RSPCA."

<h2>What did the RSPCA say about this?</h2>

The RSPCA has responded with disapproval of the act.&nbsp;In a statement, the animal welfare organisation said that they are "shocked by this vandalism of His Majesty King, our Patron's, portrait."

Buckingham Palace, as per Reuters, has declined to comment on the incident.&nbsp;
