TikTok's possible ban in the United States was blocked by US Republican Senator Rand Paul on Wednesday. Senator Paul, as per Reuters, blocked the bid to fast-track the Chinese-owned social media app's ban, citing concerns about free speech. He warned that people should "beware" of entities that "use fear to coax Americans to relinquish our liberties" and said that a ban on the app will imitate "Chinese speech bans." Asking if the US is "going to be just like China", Paul alleged that such a bill would give the US president "limitless authority" to ban speech.

"If Republicans want to continuously lose elections for a generation they should pass this bill to ban TikTok — a social media app used by 150 million people, primarily young Americans," said Paul on the Senate floor.

Adnan Syed, the man who spent over two decades in jail for the 1999 killing of his ex-girlfriend but was later released, has had his conviction reinstated. Adnan Syed's case was made famous by the podcast Serial, which had poked holes in his conviction and essentially helped in his release. But on Tuesday (March 29), a Maryland appellate court passed the judgement, after a 2-1 decision, throwing open the case again, saying the lower court had violated the right of the victim's family to attend a critical hearing in the case.

Syed was convicted of the murder of Hae Min Lee but her brother Young Lee was not allowed to attend one of the key hearings, thereby violating his legal right.

"Because the circuit court violated Mr. Lee’s right to notice of, and his right to attend, the hearing on the State’s motion to vacate...this Court has the power and obligation to remedy those violations, as long we can do so without violating Mr. Syed’s right to be free from double jeopardy," the court observed.

"Accordingly, we vacate the circuit court's order vacating Mr. Syed's convictions, which results in the reinstatement of the original convictions and sentence."

Christmas came early for a man in Australia who recently discovered a gold nugget worth almost $250,000 in the southeastern state of Victoria. The gold digger found the enormous nugget weighing 4.6 kilogrammes, with gold making up almost 2.6 kg of the weight, in an area known as the 'Golden Triangle' between Bendigo, Ballarat and St Arnaud. The man only used an amateur metal detector called 'Minelab Equinox 800 detector' worth $800 to make the discovery. The piece has been named 'Lucky Strike Nugget' after it was taken to a prospecting shop by the name 'Lucky Strike Gold'. Shop owner Darren Kamp was in disbelief when he first saw the rock with the unaware owner asking if the find could fetch him even $10,000. “Do you think there’s $10,000 worth in it?” WATCH | Digger unearths archaeological treasure from a burial cave in Israel × Kamp, who often has to deal with customers coming in with false hopes regarding their find, quickly evaluated the piece and said the ballpark figure of the piece of rock in his hand was anywhere north of $100,000. “I looked at him and I said try $100,000," Kamp told The Guardian. “He [owner] said ‘but that’s only half the rock, the other half is at home’.” After getting hold of the entire rock, Kamp arrived at the current figure which is primarily due to the soaring gold prices which are nearing global record highs. “I’ve been prospecting for 43 years. And I haven’t seen a specimen in this amount of gold in my 43 years of prospecting. Maybe in the 1850s there was probably a few found, but in today’s terms it’s very rare," Kamp added. ALSO READ | Australia: Two men dug nuggets worth $250,000 The 'Golden Triangle' has been famous for centuries and has witnessed multiple gold rushes. To this day, people flock to the region to accidentally strike gold using nothing but a metal detector. A $25.50 licence that lasts for 10 years is required to go on such expeditions. Without the license, any gold found goes straight to the crown. According to the geological survey of Victoria, there could be 75 million ounces of gold in the region. Stawell and Bendigo zones hold the greatest potential for gold and at a depth where most modern drilling techniques can be used to reach easily. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit back at US President Joe Biden after the latter advised him to abandon his highly-controversial judicial overhaul proposal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit back at US President Joe Biden after the latter advised him to abandon his highly-controversial judicial overhaul proposal. The Democrat leader, speaking to reporters said he was 'very concerned' about the health of Israeli democracy, issuing a warning that the country cannot continue down this road for long. “Like many strong supporters of Israel, I’m very concerned. And I’m concerned that they get this straight. Hopefully, the prime minister will act in a way that he can try to work out some genuine compromise, but that remains to be seen," said Biden. "I hope he walks away from it." When quizzed if America was looking to interfere in the domestic politics of Israel, Biden added, “We don’t want to interfere...Anyway, we’re not interfering. They know my position. They know America’s position. They know the American Jewish position.” No sooner did Biden have his say, Netanyahu released a response saying Israel would not make decisions based on overseas pressure. "Israel is a sovereign country which makes its decisions by the will of its people and not based on pressures from abroad, including from the best of friends," said Netanyahu. "I have known President Biden for over 40 years, and I appreciate his longstanding commitment to Israel," WATCH | Israel protests: Netanyahu pauses judicial reform until next parliament session × "My administration is committed to strengthening democracy by restoring the proper balance between the three branches of government, which we are striving to achieve via a broad consensus." After Netanyahu fired his defence minister on Sunday for speaking against the proposed legislation, the protests across the country, already ongoing for over a month, saw an increase in intensity. By Monday, Netanyahu and his government were forced to press pause on the decision until the next session of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. "Out of a sense of national responsibility, out of a will to prevent a rupture among our people, I have decided to pause the second and third readings of the bill," said Netanyahu in a televised broadcast.
