New York City may soon sink under the sea predicts a new research. The city is sinking due to the weight of its towering skyscrapers. Coupled with the rising sea levels, this weight is pushing New York under at an average rate of 1-2 millimetres per year; some areas are sinking at twice this rate. Since 1950, the water surrounding New York City has risen by approximately 9 inches (22 centimetres). The rising water levels are a looming threat to the 8.4 million people of the city.

Researchers behind the study published in the Earth’s Future journal warn that "a deeply concentrated population of 8.4 million people faces varying degrees of hazard from inundation in New York City."

Why is New York sinking?

New York's iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, or rather their weight, are causing the city to sink.

As per the research estimates, New York City's buildings, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, weigh a total of 1.68 trillion pounds — equivalent to the weight of 140 million elephants. This enormous weight pushes down on a mixture of different materials beneath the city, causing it to sink just a little bit every year.

It says that while the city's largest buildings are constructed on solid bedrock, such as schist, the ground beneath also contains a mixture of sand and clays. This mixture contributes to the natural sinking occurring along much of the US east coast as the land adjusts to the retreat of glaciers following the last ice age.

Were the iconic buildings a mistake?

Tom Parsons, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, and lead author of the research emphasised that constructing large buildings in New York was not a mistake, but it is essential to consider that each new construction further compresses the ground.

He said that the softer the soil, the more the buildings compress it.

Is it just New York that risks sinking?

No, the threat exists for all the coastal cities worldwide.

Researchers caution that it's not just New York that faces this danger. The risks, as per the authors, will be shared by many other coastal cities around the world as the climate crisis deepens.

They assert that the combination of tectonic and human-induced subsidence, along with other factors, all indicate a growing danger for coastal and riverfront regions.

As per the study, Tianjin, located in China, holds the distinction of being the fastest-sinking coastal city worldwide, with a subsidence rate of 5.2 cm per year.

Apart from Tianjin and Mumbai, the study examined land subsidence in 99 countries around the world. It identified additional coastal cities experiencing sinking, such as Jakarta in Indonesia (3.44 cm per year), Shanghai in China (2.94 cm per year), and Ho Chi Minh (2.81 mm per year) and Hanoi (2.44 cm per year) in Vietnam.

How is climate change causing these decades-old cities to sink?

The sinking, as per the study, is intensified by the impact of sea level rise, which is already occurring at approximately twice the global average due to the melting of glaciers and the expansion of seawater caused by global warming.

The research warns that by the end of the century, major flooding events from storms could occur up to four times more frequently due to the combined effects of sea level rise and climate change-fuelled hurricanes.

Are there any examples of how global warming is exacerbating the problem in New York?

In 2012 and then in 2021, New York City has already experienced the devastating impacts of flooding.

Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused extensive damage and power outages, including flooding in the New York subway system. In 2021, Hurricane Ida led to further flooding and loss of life in the city.

Scientists have attributed the severity of both these disasters to the damning effects of global warming.

How can we protect iconic cities like New York and Mumbai?

As per Parsons, proactive planning is the way. He stressed that proactive planning is important for New York and other coastal cities. He said that vulnerable cities "have to get planning for this. If you get repeated exposure to seawater, you can corrode steel and destabilise buildings, which you clearly don’t want. Insane World Record! British adventurer visits 7 Wonders of the World in less than 7 days

It's an alarming deja vu situation for the British Royals, one that Prince Harry might have predicted.

On Tuesday, in a heart-stopping turn of events, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and her mother found themselves in the middle of a "near catastrophic car chase," with relentless paparazzi. The incident took place after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended an award ceremony in New York. The couple's representative issued a statement shedding light on the dangerous incident.

The representative for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said that the couple was involved in a highly aggressive paparazzi chase. "This relentless pursuit, which lasted over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians, and two NYPD officers. While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone's safety."

The incident comes five months after he opened up about his fear that his "wife and his late mother," Princess Diana might have similar and heart-breaking fates.

"I didn't want history to repeat itself," said Harry in the Netflix documentary after stepping down from royal duties in 2020.

The incident instantly drew comparisons to the 1997 fatal crash of Princess Diana, Prince Harry's mother who died in a car crash in a road tunnel in Paris on August 31, 1997.

The incident remains to be one of the painful examples showing the dark side of the paparazzi culture.

The tragedy prompted a global conversation about the ethics and responsibilities of the media, particularly about the privacy and safety of public figures.

This was not the first time that she was followed. Diana was one of the most popular women across the world. Journalists and paparazzi would follow her every time.

But what went wrong that time? Was it the driver's fault or the paparazzi who followed them?

Harry was only 12 years old when his mother and her partner Dodi Fayed were killed when their driver slammed the car into a pillar while speeding away from the paparazzi.

During the investigation, the French officials claimed that Henri Paul, the driver was highly drunk which led him to lose control over the car.
While some paparazzi ran away from the place where the car crashed, the others were prosecuted but released after some years.

Speaking on his mother's death, Prince Harry had said it is a wound that has not healed yet. He said, "Every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back to that moment."

History repeats? Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s car chase echoes Princess Diana’s tragic fate

Deutsche Bank AG has agreed to pay $75 million to settle a lawsuit by women who say they were abused by the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and accused the German bank of facilitating his sex trafficking.

The accord resolves claims in a proposed class action in Manhattan federal court by Epstein's accusers and was confirmed by their lawyers late on Wednesday. Court approval is required.

Epstein had been a Deutsche Bank client from 2013 to 2018. He died in August 2019 in jail while awaiting trial for sex trafficking, in what New York City's medical examiner called a suicide.

The Wall Street Journal reported the settlement earlier and said the bank did not admit wrongdoing, citing people familiar with the matter.

Deutsche Bank spokesman Dylan Riddle declined to discuss the accord but referred to a 2020 statement in which the bank acknowledged an error in making Epstein a client.

He also said Deutsche Bank has invested more than 4 billion euros to bolster its controls, processes and training, and hired more people to fight financial crime.

David Boies, one of the accusers' lawyers, said in a statement that Epstein's abuses "could not have happened without the collaboration and support of many powerful individuals and institutions. We appreciate Deutsche Bank's willingness to take responsibility for its role."

The law firms Boies Schiller Flexner and Edwards Pottinger represent Epstein's accusers. A trial had been scheduled for Sept. 5.

JPMORGAN IMPACT

It wasn't immediately clear how the settlement might affect JPMorgan Chase & Co, which faces similar but larger lawsuits by Epstein's accusers and by the US Virgin Islands, where the financier had a home.

Epstein was a JPMorgan client from 1998 to 2013, a period when he allegedly trafficked many more women and girls. Court papers have outlined many details about the bank's alleged ignoring or turning a blind eye to Epstein's activities.

JPMorgan did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours.

It is separately suing Jes Staley, a former private banking chief who had been friendly with Epstein, to help cover its losses in the two lawsuits it faces.

Deutsche Bank AG has agreed to pay $75 million to settle a lawsuit by women who say they were abused by the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and accused the German bank of facilitating his sex trafficking.

Also read | Regional bank stocks soar: Is the US banking crisis ending soon? We appreciate Deutsche Bank's willingness to take responsibility for its role." The law firms Boies Schiller Flexner and Edwards Pottinger represent Epstein's accusers. A trial had been scheduled for Sept. 5. JPMORGAN IMPACT It wasn't immediately clear how the settlement might affect JPMorgan Chase & Co, which faces similar but larger lawsuits by Epstein's accusers and by the US Virgin Islands, where the financier had a home. Epstein was a JPMorgan client from 1998 to 2013, a period when he allegedly trafficked many more women and girls. Court papers have outlined many details about the bank's alleged ignoring or turning a blind eye to Epstein's activities. It is separately suing Jes Staley, a former private banking chief who had been friendly with Epstein, to help cover its losses in the two lawsuits it faces. Staley is also a former Barclays Plc chief executive. Tesla Inc's Elon Musk is among those who have been subpoenaed in the JPMorgan litigation. The Deutsche Bank case was led by an unidentified plaintiff, known as Jane Doe 1, who said Epstein sexually abused her from 2003 to 2018. A different Jane Doe 1, a former ballet dancer who said Epstein trafficked her from 2006 to 2013, is leading the accusers' case against JPMorgan. Last September, Deutsche Bank agreed to pay $26.25 million to settle a US shareholder lawsuit accusing the bank of lax oversight while doing business with risky, ultra-rich clients like Epstein. Deutsche Bank to pay $75 million to settle lawsuit by Epstein accusers

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted a three-month extension to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to complete its investigation into allegations of 'brazen' stock price manipulation by the Adani Group.

The apex court has granted the market regulator time till August 14 to submit its final report. In the meantime, the bench ordered SEBI to file an updated status report of the investigation as well as make its report submitted to Justice A M Sapre committee available to related parties.

SEBI, the Indian securities regulator, had moved the SC last month demanding a six-month extension to probe the case. The regulator argued that the complexity of the case meant it would take 15 months to complete the investigation. According to SEBI, there are as many as eight possible violations that require more time to complete the probe.

"Pass an order extending the time to conclude the investigation as directed by this Court by the common order dated March 2 by a period of 6 months or such other period as this court may deem fit and necessary in the facts and circumstances of the present case," read the plea filed by SEBI.

The had court earlier this week refused to provide a six-month extension, saying there needed to be 'alacrity in work' of the body.

“We cannot grant 6 months now. There needs to be some alacrity in the work. Put together a team. We can list the case in August mid and have the report then.. 6 months cannot be given as a minimum time. SEBI cannot take indefinitely long period and we will give them 3 months," the court said.
