The five men wrongly convicted of raping a jogger in New York's Central Park in 1989 said on Sunday that a new Netflix Inc series about their case revived the pain from their ordeal but, for some, brought a sense of redemption.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the men who became known as the "Central Park Five" said they were grateful that the four-episode dramatic series called 'When They See Us'&nbsp;humanized them and used their story to spotlight injustice.

"It's bittersweet," said one of the men, Kevin Richardson, as he sat on stage with the others. "Watching this is painful, but it's necessary. It needs to be watched."

The five men - Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise - were 14 to 16 years old at the time of the rape and confessed after lengthy police interrogations. The victim was white and the defendants all black or Hispanic.

Each soon recanted, insisting they had admitted to the crime under coercion from police officers. But they all were convicted and served prison terms of six to 13 years.

Their convictions were overturned, in 2002, after another man confessed to the crime and DNA tests confirmed his guilt. In 2014, they settled a lawsuit against for $41 million.

"It brought back a lot of pain," McCray said of the series. "I thought I was over it."

McCray, who broke into tears during the discussion, said he did not feel any sense of redemption and still suffered from the trauma of being falsely accused and imprisoned.

"Even to this day, I'm damaged. I need help. I know it," said McCray, who added that he has rejected his wife's request that he go to therapy. "The system broke a lot of things that can't be fixed."

Asked if had forgiven his father, who urged him to confess to the crime, McCray said: "I hate him. My life is ruined."

"No, it's not," an audience member shouted.

The interview, part of a Netflix campaign for television's Emmy awards, was recorded and will premiere on Netflix and on Winfrey's cable channel OWN on Wednesday.

Salaam said he believed the series was helping people to "realize that we didn't have to go through this. This is how the system, despite the wheels of justice, mowed us down."

He said he used to feel like he was walking around with his head down. Now, "I'm proudly raising my head," Salaam said to applause.

Winfrey, an executive producer of the series, said the world had known the men as "a derogatory headline for decades" but now she hoped they would be known as "the exonerated five."

"I`m angry at myself because, you know, I didn't - I was too weak to stand up to - I was 15 or 16. It's a really horrible, horrible story and the only reason I'm actually going to go into detail about it is because I want other girls to not ever let someone do that."

She continued, "We (women)&nbsp;just don't feel like we`re worthy, or we're scared to have a voice, and we`re scared to say no. That's the only reason I think it`s important to talk about it because there are so many young girls and it doesn`t matter how old you are. When I see people speaking out, especially now, it angers me when victims aren`t believed, because we just don`t make stuff up. And I like men, but there are so many men that get away with so much."

In a rather shocking revelation, Ellen opened up about her sexual abuse incident to David. She told David that as her mother underwent mastectomy after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis when she was a teen, her stepfather exploited the situation and sexually abused her.&nbsp;

In teaser video published by the streaming channel, Ellen can be heard telling David: “He told me when she was out of town that he’d felt a lump in her breast and needed to feel my breasts because he didn’t want to upset her, but he needed to feel mine.”

She further told him, “Again, ’cause I didn’t know about bodies, I don’t know that breasts are all different and … anyway, he convinced me that he needs to feel my breasts and then he tries to do it again another time, and then another time.”

At one time, she narrated that he tried to break a door to open it as she escaped by kicking out a window. She said, “It’s a really horrible, horrible story, and the only reason I’m actually going to go into detail about it is because I want other girls to not ever let someone do that.”

Ellen had previously, last October, in her own show had said that she was a survivor of sexual abuse. She had then said, “I was 15 and I had something happen to me. When I watched Dr Ford — anyone who has had something happen to them, you just get so angry when someone doesn’t believe you or says, ‘Why did you wait so long?’”

The show tells the story of a teen who leaves behind a series of 13 tapes describing why she decided to take her own life. The final episode of the first season depicted her slitting her wrists in a bathtub. 
 
The graphic scene caused a backlash among parents and health professionals, prompting Netflix in 2017 to put up additional viewer warning cards and direct viewers to support groups. 
 
A second season of '13 Reasons Why' was released in May 2018 and a third season has been ordered by Netflix.

Disney said that after launching in the US on November 12 at a starting price of $6.99 monthly, Disney+ will gradually expand internationally with a start in Europe.

Disney's service will offer its films and TV shows, along with the library it acquired from Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox. That includes the "Star Wars" and Marvel superhero franchises and ABC television content.

Details about Disney+ were shared by executives at an annual investor day, where chief executive Bob Iger said the streaming service would combine strengths of Disney and the assets acquired from Fox.

"The Disney+ platform is being built on that foundation; one that no other content or technology company can rival," Iger said.

"We knew the best approach to the market was to create great content and distribute it in innovative ways. It is that simple."

Disney+ will combine offerings from powerhouse brands including Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars with content from Hulu and sports network ESPN.

Disney stressed plans to use its coveted content, and original creations to come, to differentiate itself in the increasingly competitive streaming television market.

"I strongly believe Disney will not become a threat to Netflix whatsoever," said an analyst and Transpire Ventures partner John Meyer.

"Netflix now knows what people want more than anybody."

Some of the biggest names in media and tech world are gearing up to move into streaming, in what could be a major challenge to market leader Netflix.

With Hollywood stars galore, Apple last month unveiled its streaming video plans along with news and game subscription offerings as part of an effort to shift its focus to digital content and services to break free of its reliance on iPhone sales.

The Apple TV+ service, an on-demand, ad-free subscription service, will launch this year in 100 countries, the company said.
