Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday (May 5) that his government unanimously voted to close the local branches of Al Jazeera, a broadcaster owned by Qatar. Netanyahu made the announcement on X, though specific details regarding the implications, timing, and permanence of the closure were not immediately provided.

This decision marks a significant escalation in Israel's ongoing conflict with Al Jazeera, potentially increasing tensions with Qatar, the channel's owner. Qatar has been actively involved in mediating efforts to end the Gaza conflict, as reported by the Associated Press.

Al Jazeera's alleged bias

Al Jazeera has faced longstanding criticism from Israel, which accuses the broadcaster of biased reporting. Despite this, Al Jazeera has maintained a presence in Gaza, broadcasting coverage of the conflict, including airstrikes and humanitarian crises, often portraying Israel negatively. Israel, in turn, has accused Al Jazeera of collaborating with Hamas.

Al Jazeera, which is funded by Qatar's government, didn't respond right away when asked for a comment. Their Arabic channel mentioned the news on Sunday. But their English channel kept running, showing live scenes from East Jerusalem just after Netanyahu's announcement.

The method by which Israel would enforce such an order remains uncertain.

Hamas' response

Hamas in return has criticised the Israeli government's decision to close Al Jazeera in the country, calling it a "blatant violation of press freedom" and an effort to hide the "truth" of the Gaza war.

The move is "a repressive and retaliatory measure against the professional role of Al Jazeera in exposing the crimes and violations" in Gaza, and "represents the culmination of the declared war against journalists ... aimed at concealing the truth," Hamas said as reported by AFP.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ask for additional aid in Gaza while pressuring Hamas to accept a hostage deal that would end the violence in Gaza.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ask for additional aid in Gaza while pressuring Hamas to accept a hostage deal that would end the violence in Gaza. This is Blinken's seventh visit to Israel, which is the final stop of this Middle East tour, since October 2023. Blinken visited Ashdod Port in the southern area, where recent relief supplies to Gaza have begun. He plans to press the Israeli government to undertake a variety of measures to improve aid distribution to Gaza, where roughly half of the population is starving. Following a 2.5-hour discussion with Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Blinken appreciated progress in aid distribution and highlighted the need to speed up and sustain it, according to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also visited Gaza border crossing to see humanitarian aid shipment in person. Blinken went to Kerem Shalom, an Israeli entrance point into Gaza a few kilometers south of the flashpoint city of Rafah, where he spotted hundreds of trucks waiting to enter, as well as many Israeli military tanks stationed nearby. The meeting came nearly a month after US President Joe Biden cautioned that their support might be reassessed if Israel fails to address civilian harm, humanitarian crises, and the safety of aid workers. Also read: Israeli forces will enter Rafah ‘with or without’ Gaza hostage deal, says PM Netanyahu According to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, Blinken restated the US position that Hamas is hindering attempts to establish a cease-fire. Blinken also asked Hamas to examine a possible ceasefire arrangement arranged by Egyptian mediators, which includes the release of 33 hostages in exchange for a greater number of Palestinian inmates and an end to hostilities. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he intends to launch a military attack on Rafah "with or without" a deal. Over half of Gaza's population has sought shelter in Rafah, after fleeing from elsewhere. Overcrowded Rafah is facing a lack of food, water, and medication. Blinken also visited a few family members of American hostages held in Gaza before boarding a motorcade to Jerusalem, where he attended a private meeting with Netanyahu. (With inputs from agencies)

"Today, along with the cabinet members, I met with the families of the hostages. Those who we have returned home and those who we are trying to bring back home. I heard stories that broke my heart, I heard about the thirst and hunger, about physical and mental abuse, about the little witnesses that are still whispering from fear, about the darkness the loved ones still live under. Israel's Netanyahu hospitalised but fine, his office says

In a surprising turn of events at the Israeli parliament or Knesset, on Wednesday (June 14), an opposition lawmaker was appointed to the committee which would pick the judges in the country’s courts in what is being described as a major blow to the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition and the proposed contentious judicial overhaul plan.

Opposition’s demands for negotiations

A secret ballot was held in the Knesset where Netanyahu’s Likud party holds 64 of the 120 seats along with members of the opposition for the selection of the nine-member committee which would choose the judges for Israeli courts.

Netanyahu’s contentious judicial overhaul plan was paused back in March after which he agreed to negotiate with the opposition lawmakers after weeks of mass protests and international criticism as many called the proposed reforms a threat to democracy.

The opposition leaders had reportedly threatened to withdraw from negotiations with Netanyahu if their candidate, Karine Elharrar, was not named to the committee for the selection of judges which includes two politicians, three judges and two lawyers.

The panel not only appoints judges but also approves the makeup of the Supreme Court which has been central to the judicial reform battle. The committee typically comprises lawmakers from both the coalition as well as the opposition but parts of the overhaul had demanded that the ruling coalition, in this case, Netanyahu’s Likud party, control both positions.

Netanyahu’s failed bid to delay vote

Since the opposition would not back down on its demands, Netanyahu reportedly asked his allies to oppose all candidates, including its own members and aimed to delay the ballot which would also push all the appointments until the next vote which is a month from now.

However, after the ballots, which were cast anonymously, were counted it turned out that several coalition members voted in favour of the opposition’s pick for the committee Elharrar of the Yesh Atid party whose appointment to the nine-member panel is now secure with a 58-56 vote.

Meanwhile, Tally Gotliv of the Likud party managed to garner 15 votes and did not clear the threshold. This has now paved the way for another vote for the second seat within 30 days, said the Knesset speaker Amir Ohana.

The vote also exposed some divisions within the ruling coalition which has raised questions about Netanyahu’s control over his political allies. Meanwhile, the opposition leaders have said that this vote does not change the fact that there is still no committee and the talks would be off the table till the panel is complete.

“The committee has not been established and the threat to our democracy has not been removed,” said Yair Lapid, the leader of opposition party Yesh Atid. He added, “No committee, no talks.” Lapid also called the vote “good news” since a member from the opposition would remain on the judicial selection committee.

Netanyahu, in a video statement after the vote, said that the opposition was to be blamed for the talks not moving forward even after getting what they wanted. “(National Unity party leader Benny) Gantz and Lapid don’t want real negotiations,” said the Israeli PM, adding that “I promise the citizens of Israel, unlike them, we will act responsibly for our country.”

Israeli parliament vote delivers setback to PM Netanyahu, his judicial overhaul plan

On Thursday, Israel's incumbent Prime Minister Yair Lapid congratulated former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the recent election results. Lapid has also instructed his office to begin the transition of power. This comes after the country held its fifth election in four years on Tuesday.

“The state of Israel comes before any political consideration. I wish Netanyahu success, for the sake of the people of Israel and the state of Israel,” said the interim prime minister. Furthermore, a statement by his office said that following the results he also “updated him that he has instructed his entire office to prepare an organised transition of power.”

Lapid who served as interim prime minister for the past four months will now step down as the final results show Netanyahu and his coalition have secured a parliamentary majority. Reports suggest that Netanyahu is set to form one of the most right-wing governments in history with his religious and ultranationalist allies.

Netanyahu and his right-wing bloc have secured a comfortable majority with 64 seats in Israel’s 120-seat Knesset (parliament). Meanwhile, Lapid and his coalition won 51 seats. This election caps the country’s ongoing political instability. Last year, Netanyahu was ousted as the country’s longest-serving leader after 12 years.

In the upcoming weeks following the formal announcement of the election results, Israel’s ceremonial president will pick one candidate, in this case, Netanyahu, to form the government who will have four weeks to do so.

Israel election: Netanyahu makes a comeback, PM Yair Lapid concedes defeat

Benjamin Netanyahu is inches away from becoming the new prime minister of Israel. Thursday's vote count revealed that he holds a nearly unassailable lead over his opponent Prime Minister Yair Lapid. More than 90 per cent of ballots have been counted, according to the Central Elections Committee, and the numbers favour Netanyahu's right-wing bloc in the country's fifth election in four years.

His Likud party, its ultra-Orthodox Jewish allies and a far-right alliance called Religious Zionism will together form what might be the most right-wing government in Israeli history. The bloc that supports Netanyahu held 65 seats while the remaining votes were being counted. The US State Department is reportedly concerned about the prospect of far-right ministers in a future coalition government.

Meanwhile, Lapid has not conceded defeat yet and has asked everyone to wait until all votes were counted to reach a conclusion.

Netanyahu's margin of victory is likely to witness a slight change if the left-wing Meretz party manages to secure a minimum of four parliament seats, which it looks set to achieve. Whenever Netanyahu's victory is confirmed, he will be given 42 days by President Isaac Herzog to form a government.

Local media reports suggest that Netanyahu has already started talking to coalition parties about how the government should look like. He will need to hand out Cabinet roles and co-leaders of far-right Religious Zionism, expected to win 14 seats, are likely to end up with prominent roles.

Biden affirms support for normalisation of ties between Israel, Arab nations

A watchdog group asked Israel's top court on Sunday to order Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step aside after his indictment on corruption charges, adding to pressure he is facing from within his ruling party.

Netanyahu, a four-term conservative leader, has denied the charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust and said he will stay in office and defend himself.

His indictment on Thursday came amid unprecedented political disarray in Israel, after elections in April and September in which neither Netanyahu nor his main challenger, centrist Benny Gantz, secured a governing majority in parliament.

In its petition to the Supreme Court, the Movement for Quality Government in Israel said the first-ever criminal charges against a sitting Israeli prime minister constituted "the crossing of a red line and a grave blow to public trust in ruling institutions".

The court should force Netanyahu to resign or temporarily recuse himself from prime ministerial duties, the movement said. It was not immediately clear when the court might rule on the petition.

Gantz's mandate to form a government - after an unsuccessful attempt by Netanyahu to do so - expired on Wednesday. The next day, Israel's president declared a three-week period in which lawmakers can nominate one of their own to try to put together a ruling coalition.

Should that fail, a new election - Israel's third in a year - will be triggered.

Netanyahu's hope of securing that parliamentary nomination was challenged by Gideon Saar, a rival within his Likud party.

Saar said on Saturday Netanyahu would not able to win a third election and called on Likud to hold a leadership ballot.

"There is only one way in which we can save the country, extricate it from the crisis and ensure the Likud's continued rule - and that is if we go to snap primaries today, within these 21 days," Saar told Israel's Channel 12 television. Saar has previously said he would consider running for the top Likud slot.

While voicing appreciation for Netanyahu's record-long term and noting he was innocent until proven otherwise, Saar criticised the premier's attempts to cast his criminal prosecution as a "coup attempt" involving police, prosecutors and the media.

"Not only is it wrong to say that, it's also irresponsible to say that. It’s completely out of touch," Saar said.

The Likud party spokesman dismissed the challenge.

"It is sad to see that while Prime Minister Netanyahu keeps Israel safe on all fronts and works to preserve Likud rule, Gideon Saar, as is his wont, is displaying zero loyalty and maximum subversion," the spokesman said.

Opening the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu made no mention of the political crisis or his legal woes, speaking about Israeli security issues.

Israel's Netanyahu faces court, party challenges after indictment

Israel's military killed a commander from Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad in a strike on his home in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, triggering exchanges of fire in a violent escalation that left another nine Gazans dead.

The targeted strike prompted a retaliatory barrage of almost 200 rockets fired into Israel, followed by Israeli air raids. Gaza's health ministry reported a total of 10 people killed and more than 40 wounded in the Palestinian enclave.

Israel said its airstrikes targeted Islamic Jihad militant sites as well as rocket-launching squads.

The rocket fire into Israel caused damage and a number of injuries, with at least one rocket hitting a house and another narrowly missing passing cars on a highway.

A factory in the city of Sderot was also hit, sparking a fire.

Israeli medics said they had treated 46 people, 21 of whom had "stress symptoms" related to the rocket fire.

Reports that a separate strike targeted an Islamic Jihad member in Damascus added to the day's tensions.

Islamic Jihad confirmed one of its officials, Akram Ajouri, was targeted, with Syrian state news agency SANA reporting an Israeli strike had hit Ajouri's home in Damascus, "killing his son Muadh and another person".

Israel did not comment on that strike.

The initial Israeli raid in Gaza early Tuesday, thought to have been carried out by a drone, killed Islamic Jihad commander Baha Abu Al-Ata, 41.

Islamic Jihad confirmed his death, along with that of his wife.

Israel blamed Ata for recent rocket fire into its territory and said he had been preparing further attacks.

As the retaliatory rocket fire followed, air raid sirens rang out in various parts of Israel as residents took cover in bomb shelters.

Israel's military said Tuesday night that some 190 rockets had been fired at its territory throughout the day, with dozens intercepted by air defences.

More than half of the rockets fell in open areas, it said.

Footage posted online showing the rocket that hit the highway near the central Israeli city of Gan Yavne, narrowly missing cars.

- Schools closed -
Islamic Jihad, allied to Hamas, the Islamist movement that rules Gaza, claimed responsibility for rocket fire from the Strip.

Schools were closed in both the Gaza Strip and in parts of Israel, including in the commercial capital Tel Aviv.

The Israeli army ordered "non-essential" workers in Tel Aviv, central Israel and the Gaza border region to stay home, banning public gatherings.

Watch Video: As the retaliatory rocket fire followed, air raid sirens rang out in various parts of Israel as residents took cover in bomb shelters. - Schools closed - Islamic Jihad, allied to Hamas, the Islamist movement that rules Gaza, claimed responsibility for rocket fire from the Strip. Schools were closed in both the Gaza Strip and in parts of Israel, including in the commercial capital Tel Aviv. The Israeli army ordered "non-essential" workers in Tel Aviv, central Israel and the Gaza border region to stay home, banning public gatherings.
