The devastating floods that swept through Nepal’s Bhotekoshi-Trishuli corridor on August 26 were triggered by a massive ice-rock avalanche in the high Himalayas, and not by conventional rainfall, as per a preliminary report by Nepalese scientists. The report, commissioned by the Nepal Environment Society, was released on Sunday (Aug 30) as the death toll from the flash floods rose to 903. Authorities said bodies were still being recovered on Monday (Aug 31). The study found that a huge mass of ice, rock and debris fell from an altitude of around 5,200 metres in the Langtang-Lirung area of Rasuwa and entered the Lhende River. The surge then travelled downstream through the Bhotekoshi and into the Trishuli, generating a powerful debris-laden flood, My Republica reported. Also read: Man uses AI to fake Rs 1.2 lakh Nepal flood donation, diverts relief funds via own QR codeThe resulting floods devastated towns and villages across northern and central Nepal.
What does the research say?
Researchers concluded that a glacial lake outburst flood, or GLOF, did not cause the disaster. India has stepped up humanitarian assistance to Nepal as the death and humanitarian toll from the devastating floods continues to mount. New Delhi has offered additional rescue support, including tunnel experts, medical teams and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel if requested by Kathmandu.

The situation remains particularly critical at hydropower projects, where hundreds of workers were reportedly sheltering inside tunnels after floodwaters and debris destroyed access routes. Nearly 1,000 workers connected to various projects have reportedly been unaccounted for, including around 40 Indians and eight South Koreans.

India has already delivered more than 62 tonnes of emergency relief material to flood-hit Nepal through three separate airlifts. An Indian rescue assistance team has also reached the affected areas as authorities continue search and rescue operations.

Nepal has also sought assistance from India and China to construct 42 Bailey bridges to restore road connectivity in areas devastated by floods. India has agreed to support the bridge-building effort as Kathmandu works to reconnect isolated communities.

Nepal was struck by a deadly disaster on Wednesday (Aug 26) after flash floods swallowed communities near the Tibetan border, resulting in widespread loss of life and damage to infrastructure. More than 165 people were killed in the catastrophic event, while hundreds of others still remain missing as rescuers race to save survivors. However, the nightmare may not be over yet for Nepal as experts warn of a second possible flash flood. The flood, which swept through the transboundary Lhende Khola and Bhote Koshi river systems in Rasuwa district, is suspected to have been caused by a massive ice-rock avalanche or a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) on the Tibetan side. Concerns have been raised that the debris left behind by the initial disaster could trigger another violent surge. As ice, mud and boulders crashed through narrow mountain valleys, they may have blocked sections of the river, creating unstable temporary dams.If water continues to build behind those blockages, their collapse could unleash another sudden “wall of water” downstream. The terrain offers little room for error. Deep Himalayan gorges can funnel floodwaters into narrow channels, dramatically increasing their speed and destructive force. The first surge also carried a huge load of sediment and boulders, creating powerful mudflows capable of ripping apart bridges and sweeping away heavy machinery.Rescue operations are being complicated by the same landscape. Helicopters face severe weather and difficult high-altitude conditions, while unstable water levels and thick sediment make landing increasingly risky. The flood struck near the Gyirong Port border crossing, destroying infrastructure and cutting power and communication links. Hundreds of travellers remain unaccounted for, including Indian pilgrims travelling towards the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.Nepal’s Army, Armed Police Force and specialised teams are using drones, sniffer dogs and satellite equipment to search for survivors stranded on high ground. But the threat does not end at the border. The Bhote Koshi flows into the Trishuli and Narayani river systems, putting authorities in northern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on alert. For rescuers, the clock is ticking. The Himalayas may still have another surge to send downstream.
