The Dallas&nbsp;Mavericks, fueled by 36 points each from Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, routed the Minnesota&nbsp;Timberwolves&nbsp;124-103 on Thursday to clinch the Western Conference crown and&nbsp;book&nbsp;an&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;title&nbsp;showdown&nbsp;with the Boston&nbsp;Celtics.

Denied a sweep at home on Tuesday, the Mavs left no room for doubt in Minneapolis as they wrapped up the best-of-seven conference finals 4-1 to return to the&nbsp;NBA&nbsp;Finals for the first time since they won the&nbsp;title&nbsp;in 2011.

The&nbsp;Celtics&nbsp;will host game one of the championship series on June 6.

Slovenian star Doncic and Irving had their way with the league's top-rated defense, Doncic taking the game by the throat in the opening minutes.

"My mindset was: set the tone," said Doncic, who scored 20 points in a fast-paced first quarter, one more than the&nbsp;Timberwolves&nbsp;managed as a team.

He scored four of his six three-pointers in the first period, including a bomb from the center court logo, and the Mavs closed the quarter on a 17-1 scoring run to put the&nbsp;Timberwolves&nbsp;on their heels for good.

Irving got going with 15 points in the second quarter as he and Doncic combined for 44 first-half points -- four more than the&nbsp;Timberwolves&nbsp;put on the board before halftime, when the Mavs led 69-40.

Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns scored 28 points each for Minnesota, Towns adding 12 rebounds for the third-seed&nbsp;Timberwolves, who had swept the Phoenix Suns in the first round and stunned the defending champion Denver Nuggets in seven games in the second.

The&nbsp;Timberwolves&nbsp;had been 3-0 in elimination games this post-season, with wins in games six and seven against the Nuggets as well as their victory on Tuesday.

But the early damage by Doncic and Dallas' disruptive defense put this one out of reach early and the Mavs grabbed the first double-digit victory of a hard-fought series.

"Luka came out tonight and put his stamp on the game,"&nbsp;Timberwolves&nbsp;coach Chris Finch said. "Hit a couple of bomb threes, kind of got them loosened up offensively."

Dereck Lively returned for the Mavs after missing game four with a neck sprain suffered when Towns inadvertently kneed him in the back of the head in game three.

The energetic reserve went down hard again when he took a blow to the back of the head from Naz Reid, who was charged with a flagrant foul shortly before halftime.

The Boston Celtics fought off a spirited challenge from short-handed Cleveland Monday, beating the Cavaliers 109-102 to take a commanding 3-1 lead in their NBA Eastern Conference semi-final series.

Jayson Tatum scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jaylen Brown added 27 points for the Celtics, who will try to finish off the best-of-seven series at home on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers were dealt a heavy blow when Donovan Mitchell, who had averaged more than 35 points over the six prior games, was ruled out with a calf injury, joining starting center Jarrett Allen on the sidelines.

NBA superstar LeBron James, who led the Cavs to their only NBA title back in 2016, was sitting courtside, but with Mitchell absent the Cavs ultimately didn't have enough firepower.

The Cavs kept the pressure on, taking the lead briefly on Darius Garland's driving basket early in the third quarter -- their first lead since the first quarter.

But the Celtics quickly reasserted themselves and led by 10 going into the final period.

Cleveland, on the back of 30 points from Garland, pulled within five points three times in the final four minutes, but Brown, fed by Tatum, connected on a three-pointer with 1:09 to play that effectively sealed it.

"It's a game of runs," Tatum said after the Celtics struggled to put the depleted Cavaliers away.&nbsp;

"It's not going to be perfect every single time. They're going to make shots, but it's our job to figure it out."

The Celtics, winners of a league-best 64 regular-season games, used a 12-0 scoring run to take charge in the first quarter, Tatum scoring 16 points in the period.

Boston led by as many as 13 in the second quarter but Tatum cooled off and Cleveland, buoyed by 11 of their 15 three-pointers in the first half, battled back, twice cutting the deficit to one point before going into the break down by five.

The Celtics caught a break early in the second quarter, when Brown was called for only a common foul, rather than a flagrant, after he fell backwards into Max Strus and grabbed Strus's ankle as the Cavs player -- himself struggling to stay upright -- stepped over his head.

Cleveland coach J.B. Bickerstaff was more concerned at the fact that Boston went to the free-throw line 24 times compared to Cleveland's seven.

"I'll be honest with you, I was disappointed with the way the whistle blew tonight," he said.&nbsp;

"I thought our guys deserved much better, the way that they were competing, they were attacking the paint, they were getting after it.

"We're not asking for anything more, but we're asking for equal and I don't think we got an equal opportunity at it tonight from that standpoint."

The second place went to Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren with 98 second-place votes while Charlotte Hornet's Brandon Miller came third.

He became only the sixth player in the last 40 years to be named as Rookie of the Year. "I knew in order to do this I had to be individually good on the court and dominant. So, it was a huge thing for me and a big thing to get. It's always been really important and I'm glad it's finally official," he added.

Wembanyama, however, has his eyes set on bigger awards, such as Defensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player as well.

"The most important to me is always winning," Wembanyama said to sports website ESPN. "You know, winning the chip clearly is what I wanna do. The offseason speculation with regard to LA Lakers' LeBron James has already kicked off with many eager to know his next move. The star basketballer has remained tight-lipped about his future plans&nbsp;and hasn't provided his fans with any specific answers. James -- with a player option worth $51.4 million -- can either choose to opt-out and explore free agency or decide to retire altogether. Amid all this, one of James' ardent supporters and NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins hopes James will choose the latter and quit.

<h2>'More&nbsp;James continues to play,&nbsp;more it's going to hurt his legacy'</h2>

Perkins feels James should preserve his legacy by leaving at the right time and retiring this offseason. He shared his thoughts&nbsp;while making an appearance on ESPN's 'First Take' and said, "I wish LeBron James would retire. Not because I don't want to see more of LeBron James. The more LeBron James continues to play the game of basketball, the more it's going to hurt his legacy and the more it's going to continue to hurt his GOAT argument."

"It never comes down to accountability with Bron when he has losing seasons or gets eliminated,” Perkins said of his former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate.

Not only this, the NBA analyst also slammed James for sending subliminal messages at the trade window and called out the veteran player for not having much belief in his teammates.&nbsp;

The offseason speculation with regard to LA Lakers' LeBron James has already kicked off with many eager to know his next move. The star basketballer has remained tight-lipped about his future plans and hasn't provided his fans with any specific answers. James -- with a player option worth $51.4 million -- can either choose to opt-out and explore free agency or decide to retire altogether. Amid all this, one of James' ardent supporters and NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins hopes James will choose the latter and quit. 'More James continues to play, more it's going to hurt his legacy' Perkins feels James should preserve his legacy by leaving at the right time and retiring this offseason. He shared his thoughts while making an appearance on ESPN's 'First Take' and said, "I wish LeBron James would retire. Not because I don't want to see more of LeBron James. The more LeBron James continues to play the game of basketball, the more it's going to hurt his legacy and the more it's going to continue to hurt his GOAT argument." Los Angeles Lakers have fired head coach Darvin Ham two years into the position. The move comes after the Lakers were ousted in the first round of playoffs by the defending champions Denver Nuggets. Ham had taken over Frank Vogel after 2020-21 season.

Under Ham, the Lakers made it to the playoffs both times including a trip to the Western Conference Finals last year. They although, were beaten by the eventual champions Nuggets. Informing about parting ways with Ham, the Lakers wrote: "We greatly appreciate Darvin's efforts on behalf of the Lakers and recognize the many accomplishment achieved."

"We all want to thank Darvin for his dedication and positivity. While this was a difficult decision to make, it best course of action following a full review of the season. This organization will remain unwavering in its commitment to deliver championship-caliber basketball to Lakers fans around the world."

"It's been a hell of a two years sitting in this seat, I'll tell you that," Ham said after their loss to the Nuggets via ESPN.

Under Ham, The Lakers went 90-74 in all games. This season also started well for the team including a remarkable 7-0 run to win the inaugural in-season tournament in December. Things, however, went downhill from there on as the Lakers lost 12 of their next 17 games.&nbsp;

The LeBron James-starred side then hustled to win 11 of their last 14 games to finish with a 47-35 record and make it to the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years.

Under Ham, Lakers star James was quite exceptional. The 39-year-old averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game in 71 games &nbsp;this season - his highest since 2017-18 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. It is not confirmed whether or not LeBron will return for the next season.

Tyrese Maxey produced a 46-point gem as the Philadelphia 76ers stunned the New York Knicks 112-106 in overtime to keep their NBA Eastern Conference playoff hopes alive on Tuesday.

Maxey led the Sixers back from the brink of defeat in the fourth quarter with a late burst of scoring before dominating in overtime to ensure a game six back in Philadelphia.

The Knicks, leading the best-of-seven series 3-1 heading into Tuesday's game, had looked poised to clinch after Jalen Brunson helped the second seeds take a six-point lead with 29 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

But Maxey drained a three-pointer from 24 feet and then hit a stunning 34-footer from the logo with nine seconds left to tie it up and send a pulsating duel into overtime.

It looked as if the Knicks had reclaimed the initiative after Brunson scored five points to give New York a five-point lead before a raucous Madison Square Garden.

Yet Maxey and NBA MVP Joel Embiid had other ideas, launching a 9-0 run to give the Sixers a 106-102 advantage. New York pegged it back to 106-106 but the Sixers regrouped and pulled clear again to seal victory.

"Season on the line, we fought for 53 minutes and never gave up," Maxey said afterwards. "Even when we were down late guys still went out their and made plays -- that was big time."

A pumped up Maxey could be seen roaring in defiance after helping the Sixers take the game to overtime in the fourth quarter.

"I was saying some things that my grandma probably wouldn't like," he said afterwards. "I'm a happy guy but I absolutely hate losing."

Maxey's 46-point haul included seven three-pointers while Embiid posted a triple double comprised of 19 points, 16 rebounds and 10 rebounds.

Tobias Harris added 19 points for the Sixers while Kelly Oubre Jr. finished with 14.

Brunson meanwhile led New York's scoring with 40 points while Josh Hart had 18 and O.G. Anunoby 17.

The Sixers now have a chance to level the series at home when game six takes place back in Philadelphia on Thursday.

In other playoff games on Tuesday, Donovan Mitchell rattled in 28 points -- including 14 in the fourth quarter -- as the Cleveland Cavaliers ground out a 104-103 win over the Orlando Magic to take a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference first round playoff series.

Orlando had fought back from 2-0 in the series to level after recording emphatic wins in games three and four in Florida.

But Cleveland dug deep to ensure they will head back to Orlando for game six on Friday with a chance of clinching the series.

"It's not gonna be pretty but it's the playoffs," Mitchell said after Cleveland's win. "The fourth quarter -- that's what I do. But I've got to play better for my group.

"We've played well at home as a group -- now we've got to go down there in a hostile environment and handle our business."

Paolo Banchero led Orlando's scorers with 39 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Murray hit a jumper over Austin Reaves from just inside the free-throw line to propel his side to a thrilling 108-106 win over the Lakers. Playoffs Round 1: Lakers lose series to Nuggets thanks to Jamal Murray’s game-winning buzzer-beater

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid wasn't amused with the swarm of New York Knicks fans in the Wells Fargo Centre during Game 4 of the Round 1 playoff series on&nbsp;April 28. The Knicks won the game 97-92 and now lead the seven-game series 3-1. Embiid wasn't happy to hear the Knicks fans at 76ers' home court and said it was 'disappointing.'

"I love our fans. Think it's unfortunate, and I'm not calling them out, but it is disappointing. Obviously, you got a lot of Knicks fans, and they're down the road. [But] I've never seen it, and I've been here for 10 years. Yeah, it kind of pisses me off, especially because Philly is considered a sports town. They've always shown up, and I don't think that should happen. Yeah, it's not OK," Embiid said after the game.

Embiid's teammate Tayrese Maxey although defended the home fans and said: "Our crowd did a great job."&nbsp;

"We appreciate them. It's a close two organizations. Like they're right up the street from us, honestly. So, it is what it is, and you just got to go out there and you got to defeat that," he added.

Such was the noise at the game that it almost felt like the Knicks were visiting the Brooklyn Nets - the second franchise in the New York Metropolitan area - instead of the 76ers in Philly - a town which is two-hour away from them.

Even Knicks star Jalen Brunson, who is a Philadelphia Eagles fan (City's popular National Football League team), found it jarring to see so much support for the away team.

"Not going to lie, this Philadelphia fan base, I've said this before, they're very relentless, very passionate," Brunson said. "I mean, I'm an Eagles fan. I would know.

"But seeing the Knicks, hearing the Knicks here is pretty cool. It's awesome."

Playoffs Round 1: 'It's unfortunate...,' 76ers star Joel Embiid on Knicks fans swarming Philly in Game 4

The Boston Celtics wrested back their control as the number one seed team in the Eastern Conference with the crushing Game 3 win against the Miami Heat on Saturday (Apr 28) in first round of playoffs. The Celts are the series favourites and rightly so, winning 14 games more than the second-placed New York Knicks in the regular season.

With a 114-94 win in Game 1 of the playoffs, the Celtics looked all but sure to sail through the second round before an abrasion hit them. The Heat, last year's NBA finalists, beat them in the second game 111-101. The loss came as a wake-up call to the Celts who had surrendered 23 3-pointes in Game 2.

After the loss, they were challenged by coach Joe Mazzulla to play more physically defensive and the impact was there to see. Speaking after the win, Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who scored 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists, said: "Everybody knows how talented we are. But can we be the tougher, harder-playing team?"&nbsp;

"If we can combine that with the talent, it's going to be hard to beat us. Can we start off every game, essentially, punching first instead of reacting? That's a test we have to be up for every single night," he added.

The Celtics didn't let the Heat catch their breath throughout the game as visible in the quarterly score. Miami could score only 12 in Q1 against Boston's 21. The Celtics went even higher in Q2, scoring 42 and allowing just 27 in return.

The second half saw the Heat trying to make a comeback but they were effectively shut down by the Celtics with scores (Celtics-heat) of 24-22 and 17-23 in Q3 and Q4, respectively.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra also agreed that the Celtics were 'more physical team' and said: "They bodied us [and] bullied us."

The fourth game of the seven-match series will be played on Monday (Apr 29).

Speaking after the win, Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who scored 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists, said: "Everybody knows how talented we are. But can we be the tougher, harder-playing team?" Jontay Porter of the Toronto Raptors was dealt a major blow as he was given&nbsp;a lifetime ban by the NBA for violating the league's gambling policy. In this regard, the NBA released a statement on Wednesday (April 17) explaining its ruling.

The statement read, "A league investigation found that Porter violated league rules by disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games."

The NBA's investigation pointed out that the 24-year-old Porter intentionally&nbsp;limited his participation in his side's March 20 fixture&nbsp;against the Sacramento Kings in order to influence the outcome of one or more bets on his performance. Meanwhile, in the Raptors&nbsp;game versus the Nets, Porter claimed he felt ill after featuring in the game for a mere&nbsp;three minutes.

In addition, it was revealed that&nbsp;before the game, Porter&nbsp;released confidential information about his health status to "an individual he knew to be an NBA bettor." A different individual associated with the youngster also bet that he would perform on a below-par level on March 20 as part of an $80,000 parlay the bettor placed with an online sports book.

Porter, who was a two-way player for the Raptors, has now become the second person&nbsp;to be banned from the league by Commissioner Adam Silver for violating rules. The first was now-former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, in 2014.

After Porter's ban, Silver said, as quoted by Sportstar, "There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment."

NBA overall leader Boston delivered a devastating and historic performance in routing the Golden State Warriors 140-88 on Sunday, stretching the Celtics' win streak to 11 games.

It was the third-largest blowout victory in Celtics history, a legacy dating to 1946.

Boston's Jaylen Brown scored 25 of his 29 points in a record-shattering first half while Jayson Tatum celebrated his 26th birthday by scoring 22 of his 27 points during the first two quarters of domination.

"It's up there. Great birthday. Got to do what I love in front of the best fans in the world and get a win," Tatum said.&nbsp;

The Celtics became the first club in NBA history to win three games in the same season by 50 or more points. The Celtics routed Indiana 155-104 in November and last month blasted Brooklyn 136-86, taking both in Boston.

Despite Latvian big man Kristaps Porzingis being sidelined by a left quad bruise, the host Celtics seized an 82-38 lead after the second quarter, their largest half-time edge in team history and the Warriors' largest-ever half-time deficit.

"It was a lot of fun," Boston's Derrick White said. "It was a good start. You never expect something like that to happen."

The Celtics made 10 3-pointers in the first quarter, their most in any quarter this season, and closed the period on a 23-1 run over six minutes to seize command at 44-22.

The Warriors shot 34.9% (15-of-43) in the first half, 3-of-18 from 3-point range, and made eight turnovers while the Celtics shot 60% (30-of-50) in the first half, 15-of-24 from beyond the arc, and made only one turnover.

Top players saw little of the court in the second half. Boston stretched the lead to&nbsp;115-62 after three quarters and reserves cruised to the finish as the Celtics improved to 29-3 at home this season.

Eastern Conference leader Boston improved the league's best record to 48-12 while Golden State slid to 32-28, ninth in the Western Conference.

"We have a lot of experience. We've grown, we've matured," Brown said. "We're primed and we're ready."

"There's a lot of respect for the Golden State Warriors, but we feel like it's our time now."

The Minnesota Timberwolves fell from the West lead after losing at home 89-88 to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kawhi Leonard's two free throws with 13 seconds remaining gave the Clippers an 89-86 lead. Minnesota's Anthony Edwards drove to the basket for a dunk with three seconds remaining but never got the ball back.

Leonard led the Clippers with 32 points while James Harden went 0-for-10 from the floor, 0-for-6 from 3-point range, and had only four points.

Edwards led Minnesota with 27 points.

<h2>Doncic shines in defeat</h2>

At Dallas, Mavericks star Luka Doncic posted a triple double in a losing cause as the visiting Philadelphia 76ers took a 120-116 triumph.

Tobias Harris scored 28 points, Tyrese Maxey added 24 and Kelly Oubre Jr. had 21 off the bench for the Sixers (35-25), who remain without injured reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid.

Slovenian Doncic finished with 38 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists while Kyrie Irving added 28 points for Dallas, which fell to 34-27, eighth in the Western Conference.

At Cleveland, Donte DiVincenzo scored 28 points and Josh Hart had a triple double with 13 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists to spark New York's 107-98 victory over the Cavaliers.

New York's Jalen Brunson was hurt in the game's opening seconds, holding his left knee before limping off the court -- adding to injury issues that have benched three top forwards.

The Cavaliers were without Donovan Mitchell due to a sore left knee.

French rookie Victor Wembanyama scored 31 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added six assists and six blocked shots to spark the San Antonio Spurs over visiting Indiana 117-105.

R.J. Barrett scored 23 points while Immanuel Quickley added 22 points and 11 assists to lead Toronto over visiting Charlotte 111-106.

Paolo Banchero scored 29 points to lead Orlando in a 113-91 home triumph over Detroit.

LeBron James became the first NBA player to reach 40,000 career regular-season points on Saturday (March 2). The 39-year-old superstar scored nine against defending champion Denver to achieve the milestone.

James, who just over a year ago overtook Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA's all-time scoring mark, is a four-time NBA champion and four-time NBA Most Valuable Player as well as the league's oldest active player, now in his 21st campaign.

"It's a huge, huge testimony to all the work he has put in all over these years, how well he has taken care of himself, the way he has played at a high level," Lakers coach Darvin Ham said of James ahead of the game.

"It's a hell of an accomplishment."

After scoring five points in the first quarter, James sank a layup 14 seconds into the second quarter to pull within two of the milestone, then missed a free throw and on the next Laker possession missed a 3-point shot.
James scored the historic basket with 10:39 remaining in the second quarter, banking in a driving layup from the left side of the basket.

The crowd gave James a standing ovation after he made the basket. The ball James used to score the milestone hoop was removed from the game.

James scored his first basket of the game on a fast break layup 6:20 into the opening quarter to give the Lakers an 18-12 lead, then added a 3-pointer from the left corner 63 seconds later for a 23-14 advantage.

In anticipation of reaching the milestone, James said it won't rank among his greatest feats but the 40,000-point mark is meaningful.

"No one has done it. And for me to be in this position at this point and time in my career, I think it's pretty cool," James said.

"Is it one of the top things I've done in my career? No. Does it mean something? Of course. Why wouldn't it?

"To hit feats and have milestones throughout my career, they all mean something to me. Absolutely.

"Obviously, there's a pecking order of which ones are higher than others, but I would be lying to you if I said no, it doesn't mean anything. It absolutely does."

The Lakers, 33-28, rank 10th in the Western Conference, the final play-in spot, while the Nuggets are 41-19, third in the West but only a game behind pace-setting Minnesota.

Basketball star LeBron James becomes first player to score 40,000 points in NBA history

The Los Angeles Lakers, fueled by 40 points from Anthony Davis and 31 from LeBron James, pulled off another NBA thriller on Thursday, beating the Washington Wizards 134-131 in overtime.

One day after James reeled off 34 points -- 19 of them in the fourth quarter -- to key a come-from-behind victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, the Lakers had to dig deep again against a Wizards team tied for the worst record in the league.

James's four points in overtime included a three-pointer that tied it at 131-131. He fed Davis for a dunk and capped the scoring with a free-throw.

James, already the league's all-time scoring leader, is now nine points away from becoming the first player in NBA history to score 40,000 in the regular season.

Jordan Poole scored a season-high 34 points and Marvin Bagley III added a 23 for Washington, who dropped their 13th straight.

But Lakers coach Darvin Ham said the young, hungry Wizards were a tough opponent -- especially on the heels of Wednesday's draining victory.

"They put pressure, they're a tough team to play coming off a back-to-back, really high emotional game from last night," Ham said. "But we found a way, we found a way to win.

"Our guys pulled together when we needed to and made the plays when we needed to."

In Denver, star big man Nikola Jokic missed out on a fifth straight triple-double but Michael Porter Jr's 30 points fueled the Nuggets in a 103-97 victory over the Miami Heat in an NBA Finals rematch.

Porter added 11 rebounds, helping fill the void after Jamal Murray departed in the second quarter with a sprained ankle.

Jokic finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists as the Nuggets fended off Miami's fourth-quarter rally.

Bam Adebayo scored 22 points and Butler added 21 for the Heat, who were without injured Tyler Herro, Kevin Love and Josh Richardson and saw their five-game winning streak end.

<h2>Curry shines</h2>

A trip to Madison Square Garden was just what Golden State star Stephen Curry needed to break out of his scoring doldrums.

Curry scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Warriors to a 110-99 victory over the New York Knicks, bouncing back from a scoreless first half in the Warriors' win over the Wizards on Tuesday.

Curry said he fed off the energy at Madison Square Garden -- an arena steeped in NBA history and where he broke the record for career three-pointers in 2021.

"It didn’t hurt that in the Garden I had a good vibe and a good flow going," Curry said. "It's always fun. This is a special place."

Jonathan Kuminga added 25 points for Golden State, who grabbed a quick 14-0 lead and never trailed.

Jalen Brunson scored 27 points to lead the Knicks, who had the deficit down to four midway through the fourth quarter but with key contributors Julius Randle and OG Anunoby sidelined could never gain the upper hand.

Another sparkling effort from rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama helped the San Antonio Spurs snap a five-game losing streak with a 132-118 victory over Western Conference contenders Oklahoma City.

French star Wembanyama scored 28 points with 13 rebounds and five blocked shots.

The fourth quarter featured four lead changes, but with three-and-a-half minutes remaining Wembanyama produced a pair of three-pointers and a big block of a three-point attempt by Oklahoma City's rookie of the year contender Chet Holmgren, and the Spurs pulled away for the win.

"We're just playing with heart," Wembanyama said.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 31 points, Jalen Williams added 26 and Holmgren contributed 23 for the Thunder, who slipped a game behind the Minnesota Timberwolves for top spot in the Western Conference.

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Milwaukee in the Bucks' 111-99 victory over the Hornets in Charlotte.

Malik Beasley made five three-pointers on the way to 19 points for the Bucks, who pushed their winning streak to four games and completed a season sweep of the Hornets.

Also Read: 'Don't question my commitment to Manchester United': Star striker Marcus Rashford slams critics James's four points in overtime included a three-pointer that tied it at 131-131. "Our guys pulled together when we needed to and made the plays when we needed to." In Denver, star big man Nikola Jokic missed out on a fifth straight triple-double but Michael Porter Jr's 30 points fueled the Nuggets in a 103-97 victory over the Miami Heat in an NBA Finals rematch. Curry shines A trip to Madison Square Garden was just what Golden State star Stephen Curry needed to break out of his scoring doldrums. This is a special place." Jonathan Kuminga added 25 points for Golden State, who grabbed a quick 14-0 lead and never trailed. LA Lakers hold off Washington Wizards in high-scoring overtime thriller

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 30 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and passed off nine assists to lead the dominant Milwaukee Bucks in a 119-98 NBA victory at Philadelphia on Sunday.

New Bucks coach Doc Rivers collected a victory over his former club, the 76ers having fired Rivers last May after three seasons guiding the franchise. Milwaukee hired Rivers last month to replace fired Adrian Griffin.

Damian Lillard added 24 points, nine assists and seven rebounds while Malik Beasley added 20 points as the Bucks hit 43-of-79 shots from the floor (54.4%) and kept the Sixers to 36-of-97 (37.1%) shooting.

Milwaukee, coming off a victory on Friday at Western Conference leader Minnesota, seized a 69-48 half-time lead and stayed in command to the finish despite some second-half stumbles.

"We did a good job of just carrying over from the win we had over Minnesota," Antetokounmpo said.

"We came out and played hard in the first two quarters. In the third quarter we were a little bit sloppy. We turned the ball over a lot of times. But going into the fourth quarter I think we did our best job just finding one another, making the right plays offensively.

"Defensively the group was there all night. They made some tough threes but whenever they were in the paint we were jumping up clean and we would get the rebound and go the other way."

The Greek star, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, hit 10-of-17 from the floor and leads the NBA with 27 30-point, 10-rebound performances this season.

Milwaukee improved to 37-21, third in the Eastern Conference, and Antetokounmpo likes what he sees from the team these days as the Bucks chase a second NBA title in four seasons.

"We've got to keep on playing better, got to keep building good habits and just keep playing hard," he said. "These last two games we've played them hard and that's who we are. When we don't play hard, we don't look like the Bucks."

The Sixers, playing without injured reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid, were led by 24 points from Tyrese Maxey.

Basketball: Giannis' 30-point show powers Milwaukee Bucks in NBA blowout over Sixers

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks roared out of the NBA All-Star break with a 112-107 victory over Western Conference leaders Minnesota on Friday.

Damian Lillard drilled a step-back basket with 10.3 seconds remaining to seal the win, the Bucks holding off a frantic Minnesota rally that saw the Timberwolves slice a 17-point deficit to four on Anthony Edwards's three-pointer with 1:58 left to play.

Antetokounmpo grabbed two offensive rebounds and made three free throws to push the lead back to seven.

Two more clutch three-pointers from Edwards kept the Timberwolves in with a chance, but Antetokounmpo found Jae Crowder for a layup and Lillard delivered the dagger with 9.2 seconds left to play.

"That's what Dame does," Antetokounmpo said. "We've just got to get out of his way and just let him be great. He thrives with those moments."

Edwards finished with 28 points, Karl-Anthony Towns scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Rudy Gobert added 12 points and 19 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

But ultimately Minnesota couldn't overcome a disastrous third quarter in which the Bucks out-scored them 36-13.

Antetokounmpo was displeased with the Bucks' own sloppy spell early in the fourth.

"But we kept our composure," he said.

The same couldn't be said for the Miami Heat and the Pelicans in New Orleans, where the Heat triumphed 106-95 in a rollercoaster of a contest that saw four players ejected after a brawl early in the fourth quarter.

Miami star Jimmy Butler returned after missing three games because of a death in his family and scored 23 points with nine rebounds before he was among those tossed in the melee that erupted after Miami center Kevin Love tried to wrap up Zion Williamson and the Pelicans star ended up on the floor.

Butler and Naji Marshall got into a shoving match with Marshall briefly grabbing Butler's throat. Players flooded the court and Heat backup center Thomas Bryant -- who didn't even play in the game -- was among those ejected as was New Orleans' Jose Alvarado, who appeared to throw a punch.

When order was restored New Orleans grabbed a 91-89 lead but the Heat -- who led by as many as 19 -- responded with an 11-0 scoring run to regain control.

"Nobody wants to see anything like that," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of the fracas, which he believed stemmed from a "misunderstanding" of what happened on the play when Williamson fell.

"I honestly think Zion slipped on the play when K-Love grabbed him," Spoelstra said. "And then everybody kind of over-reacted.

"I think they interpreted that K-Love threw (Williamson) down. On K-Love's best day, I don't think he could throw him down."

<h2>- 'Just competitive'</h2>

Williamson, who led the Pelicans with 23 points, said Love actually tried to protect him when he fell. He tried to calm things down, but he could see how the situation spiraled.

"It's just competitive," Williamson said. "It's people riding for their teammates."

Tempers flared also in San Francisco, where Golden State's Lester Quinones and Charlotte's Grant Williams were ejected when players scuffled in the waning moments of the Warriors' 97-84 victory over the Hornets.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 15 points in the victory over his brother Seth's Hornets -- who were held to the fewest points by a Warriors opponent since 2022.

Elsewhere, LeBron James returned from an ankle injury to score 30 points with nine assists and seven rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-118 victory over rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.

Wembanyama had 27 points with 10 rebounds and eight assists, adding five blocked shots and five steals to become just the 15th player, and the youngest ever, to post the statistical "5x5" -- at least five points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals in one game.

"I've said it from the beginning, he's special," James said of Wembanyama.

All Star Game 2024: East thrash West 211-186 in record win

Kobe Bryant was known for exceeding expectations, so it should have come as no surprise that on the day the late star's statue was unveiled outside of the Los Angeles Lakers' home arena, it was revealed that three statues will ultimately don the downtown L.A. property.

In a private ceremony outside of Crypto.com Arena on Thursday, the biggest names in Lakers history were in attendance -- from Jerry West to Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and former head coach Phil Jackson. Pau Gasol was there, as was Norm Nixon, Michael Cooper and Robert Horry.

Abdul-Jabbar and Jackson spoke at the ceremony, along with Lakers controlling owner Jeanie Buss, former Laker Derek Fisher and Bryant's widow Vanessa. "As I see today's current generation of star players follow in Kobe's footsteps with huge scoring games, I know he would take pride in knowing that he is still pouring inspiration into the game that was so special to him," Vanessa Bryant said. It was Vanessa Bryant that revealed the plan to have three statues.

"I leave you with one of my husband's amazing quotes," Vanessa Bryant said. "‘Leave the game better than you found it and when it comes time for you to leave, leave a legend.' And that he did."

With that, the first Bryant statue was revealed from behind a gold curtain with confetti flying. It depicts Bryant in a white Lakers uniform with the No. 8. His right index finger is pointed into the air, depicting the moment after his 81-point performance Jan. 22, 2006, against the Toronto Raptors.

The base of the statue is a triangle in honor of the triangle offense Bryant perfected under Jackson and assistant coach Tex Winter. The date of the ceremony -- 2/8/24 -- was symbolic. No. 2 was the jersey number of his daughter and aspiring basketball player Gianna Bryant, and her father wore both No. 8 and No. 24 during his Hall of Fame career.

Kobe, Gianna and seven others were killed Jan. 26, 2020, in a helicopter crash. While another of the statues will depict Bryant wearing his No. 24 jersey, the third will be of Bryant and his daughter Gianna.

Starting Friday morning, the public can visit the statue unveiled Thursday. Bryant joined the Lakers as a teenager straight out of high school and spent his entire career in Los Angeles, winning five NBA titles and retiring after the 2015-16 season. In the history of a franchise filled with great players, Bryant holds numerous team records, including points and games played.

His 33,643 points are fourth in NBA history, with three men who have played with the Lakers -- LeBron James, Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone -- standing ahead of him. "I've missed Kobe so much, like everyone else does," said Lakers legend James Worthy, who is now an analysist on Lakers broadcasts. "Anybody he came in touch with, he made it a special moment in their life. But this unveiling of this statue is amazing because it almost comes alive. Looking at it, you can see Kobe, you can feel Kobe, you can hear his voice."

Elgin Baylor, Shaquille O'Neal, Abdul-Jabbar, Johnson, West and announcer Chick Hearn also have been immortalized with statues representing the Lakers at the downtown Los Angeles venue.

"‘Leave the game better than you found it and when it comes time for you to leave, leave a legend.' And that he did." It depicts Bryant in a white Lakers uniform with the No. Looking at it, you can see Kobe, you can feel Kobe, you can hear his voice." Elgin Baylor, Shaquille O'Neal, Abdul-Jabbar, Johnson, West and announcer Chick Hearn also have been immortalized with statues representing the Lakers at the downtown Los Angeles venue.

Former basketball player and National Basketball Association (NBA) great Michael Jordan's shoes he wore during his NBA Finals victories have been sold for a record of $8 million. The news, reported by the Independent, said that the shoes were auctioned off in New York by Sotheby on February 2. The actual price for the set of six sneakers from Jordan's six NBA Championships was $8,032,800, as informed by the auctions house.

Jordan had won the NBA titles in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998 while playing for the Chicago Bulls. The whole set is collectively known&nbsp;as Dynasty Collection. Auction house Sotheby's head of modern collectibles, Brahm Wachter said in a statement, "Today's record-breaking price is a testament to the GOAT. The Dynasty Collection undeniably ranks among the most significant compilations of sports memorabilia in history. Serving as both a reminder of Michael Jordan's lasting impact on the world and a tangible expression of his recognised legendary status, its significance is further validated by this monumental result."

The auction house also shared the story of collecting one shoe each from the pair worn by Jordan in the NBA Finals on it's official Instagram handle before the auction and wrote: "There’s a reason Michael Jordan is missing a shoe after each of his 6 championship-clinching games. Before his first championship finals with the Chicago Bulls in 1991, Tim Hallam—executive director of PR for the Chicago Bulls—asked for the game-worn sneaker from the championship-clinching game. Not only did Jordan oblige, he signed it as well. What happened over the next few years is the stuff of sports legend.

"Perhaps superstitiously, Jordan didn’t stop at the first championship. Instead, after each of the following five finals (1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998) Jordan removed one shoe right after leaving the court, signed it, and handed it off to Hallam."&nbsp;

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry gained a 10th NBA All-Star nod and Lakers star Anthony Davis a ninth as reserves for the mid-season showcase were announced on Thursday. Coaches chose the seven reserves from each conference, with Minnesota's Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns both selected in the West.

Kawhi Leonard and Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers and Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns were also named to the West squad which will be captained by 20-time All-Star LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers. The East reserves include three first-timers in Philadelphia's Tyrese Maxey, Orlando's Paolo Banchero and the New York Knicks' Jalen Brunson.

The Knicks' Julius Randle was also named a reserve along with Boston star Jaylen Brown, Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell and Miami's Bam Adebayo. All-Star starters, selected by a combination of fan voting and voting by a media panel and by players, were named last month.

Four-time NBA champion James broke the record he had shared with another Lakers legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, with his 20th selection. James will captain and join a starting lineup that also includes Phoenix's Kevin Durant and Serbian center Nikola Jokic, a two-time MVP from the defending champion Denver Nuggets.

West starting guards included Slovenian Luka Doncic of Dallas and Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Canada. Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks was named captain for the East, whose frontcourt starters also include Cameroon's reigning NBA MVP and this season's top scorer Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston's Jayson Tatum.

East guards included Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton, the NBA assists leader, and Milwaukee's Damian Lillard. NBA commissioner Adam Silver will select the replacement for any player unable to play in the All-Star Game, selecting a substitute from the same conference.

It looks as if Silver will have multiple replacements to name. The Knicks said Thursday that Randle will miss two to three weeks with a dislocated shoulder while the 76ers revealed Embiid has a meniscus injury in his left knee with no timetable yet for his return.

Luka Doncic matched the fourth-highest scoring performance in NBA history Friday, pouring in 73 points to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 148-143 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

A masterful individual performance saw the Slovenian star set a Mavs record with 41 first-half points, with the scorching run continuing in the second half as Dallas kept the determined Hawks at bay.

Doncic added 10 rebounds and seven assists. He connected on 25 of 33 shots from the floor -- including eight three-pointers -- and made 15 of his 16 free throws.

"I was just going, you know, whatever the defense give me," Doncic said. "In the second half they doubled me all the time so I tried to make some plays."

His sensational performance spoiled the return of Trae Young, who led the Hawks with 30 points after missing two games in concussion protocol.

Doncic's franchise-record effort pushed him into elite NBA territory. Only Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant have scored more points in a game, Chamberlain with the league record 100 in 1962 and Bryant with 81 in 2006.

Chamberlain also owns a 78-point performance and two of 73 -- a number also reached by David Thompson and, now, Doncic.

"It's beautiful," Doncic said. "I'm glad we got a win."

The Hawks had pulled within three points with less than two minutes to play, but Doncic drove for a layup, drew a foul and converted the free throw to help push the lead back to seven with 58 seconds left.

A Young basket cut the deficit to three with 10 seconds to play, but Tim Hardaway Jr. made a pair of free throws to seal it for the Mavs, who were without injured Kyrie Irving.

Doncic's 25 baskets were a career high and he crushed his own franchise record of 60 points, set against the New York Knicks on December 27, 2022.

Doncic's effort came less than a week after Joel Embiid poured in 70 in a Philadelphia 76ers win over San Antonio -- and it wasn't the only eye-popping outburst of the night.

Phoenix guard Devin Booker's 62-point performance, however, came in a losing effort as the Indiana Pacers triumphed 133-131 to halt the Suns' seven-game winning streak.

Booker broke his own Suns record for points in a quarter with 29 in the first.

They led by as many as 17 but the Pacers had tied it up with less than a minute to play and Obi Toppin's putback basket off a Pascal Siakam miss sealed the victory as Booker couldn't get his three-pointer to fall as time expired.

It was Booker's second game this season of 50 or more points after a 52-point showing against New Orleans earlier this month. He had a career-high 70 against Boston in 2017.

Siakam scored 31 points, leading six Pacers players in double figures as Indiana notched a second straight win.

"In the second half they doubled me all the time so I tried to make some plays." His sensational performance spoiled the return of Trae Young, who led the Hawks with 30 points after missing two games in concussion protocol.
