The INS Kalavari will change the dynamics of warfare in the south and south-east Asia. The reasons why it will have such a profound impact on Indian defense strategy is because of the new features that the DRDO is adding to it.

INS Kalvari happens to be the first submarine of Indian Navy to be equipped with Air Independent Propulsion which is currently supplied by DCNS. DCNS is a French industrial group which specialises in naval defence and marine renewable energy. But to develop INS Kalavari more in the tune of Prime Minister Narendra Modi' Make in India campaign, the AIP of the last two submarines under this category will be developed indigenously by the DRDO. Under the new technology, involving the use of an Air Independent Propulsion system, the submarines will not need atmospheric oxygen to run its propulsion system. This means that the submarine can remain underwater for more time and can remain undetected.

The INS has been developed as an attack submarine which can carry 18 heavyweight torpedoes. To serve the purpose of the Indian Navy, the DRDO is developing a specialised torpedo called Varunastra, which is a 1500kg, 8-meter-long guided torpedo. The torpedo has a range of 40 kms and can destroy even aircraft carriers with its 250 kg warhead. It gets even locked on to the acoustics generated by the components of any ship.

INS Kalavari is here to change the how war is fought on land and sea. INS Kalavari has the capacity to carry 30 mines for protective laying in any of the waters. The 18 Exocet Anti- Ship Missile which the submarine carries can destroy any enemy ship within a range of 180km. This means it can destroy any enemy ship without coming in its detection range. Incidentally, Exocet is a state of the art anti-ship missile made by French company MBDA. The MBDA works with over 90 armed forces worldwide and is highly reputed as a manufacturer of missiles. The Exocet missile, carried by the INS Kalavari, is a missile which when launched, goes in a sea-skimming way to attack its target and, hence, remain totally undetected till its final target. With a small change, it can also be used to attack the land-based targets. Thus, equipped with this technology, INS Kalavari with subsequent development can play a crucial role in land warfare too.

Nine years on since the deadly 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai, the victims still await justice. Devika, a survivor of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus attack, was an eyewitness to the savage killing of people by Kasab and his accomplices. Calling Kasab "a mosquito" she hopes for the arrest of mastermind of the attack Hafiz Saeed. When I saw Kasab in the courtroom I was livid. I wished I had a gun in my hand, would have shot him there. I went into depression after the incident, my relatives had no chance to escape. Happy that perpetrators were either killed or punished. It was carried out by 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists from Pakistan who arrived in Mumbai via sea route. As many as 166 people lost their lives while over 300 suffered injuries in the attack. Nine terrorists were killed while the lone surviving terrorist Kasab was hanged to death on November 21, 2012, at the Yerwada Central Jail in Pune. Even after nine years of the attack, mastermind Hafiz Saeed is still roaming free. He walked free from the house arrest in Pakistan on November 24. Immediately after his release, the LeT founder resumed the anti-India rhetoric and vowed to mobilise people for the "cause of Kashmir" and called for "jihad". Calling the release of Saeed as "a step in the wrong direction" the White House has condemned his release and asked for his immediate re-arrest. Bengaluru is rated highest for the digital environment of people, skills, financial environment, innovation and entrepreneurship, new technology development, and ICT infrastructure, according to a report from The Economist, published on Tuesday. “India’s cities may suffer from infrastructure deficits, pollution, poverty and other ills, but when it comes to the environment for digital transformation, their executives are remarkably optimistic", the report said. San Francisco came in the second followed by Mumbai and New Delhi, while Tokyo, Yokohama, and Berlin were at the bottom. Citing a case study in digital security, the report mentioned that it was surprising to see train riders in San Francisco were unable to pay their fares, hackers had attacked the system's computers, encrypting all its data, and were demanding a ransom to return it. The report has taken into consideration four broad parametres to rank cities: digital security, health security, infrastructure security and personal security. Top 10 cities on the list of 45 were Bengaluru, San Francisco, Mumbai, New Delhi, Beijing, Manila, Shanghai, Jakarta, London, and Madrid. The Economist surveyed, 2,620 executives across the 45 cities in June and July, in partnership with telecommunications firm Telstra Corp.
