The notorious morality police are back on the streets to enforce the dress code that the country mandates for women.

<p>The Iranian officials, on Sunday (July 16) announced that it will relaunch patrols by the so-called morality police in a bid to enforce the hijab rule after a reported increasing number of women leaving their hair uncovered in public. The announcement was made less than a year after the death of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/death-of-iranian-woman-after-arrest-by-moral-police-unforgivable-white-house-516956">Mahsa Amini</a>, whose alleged death in police custody had sparked nationwide protests.</p>

<h2><strong>Morality police back on Iranian streets</strong></h2>

<p>The announcement was made by the Iranian law enforcement spokesperson, Saeid Montazeralmahdi who said that police patrols were now operational on foot and with vehicles who would resume notifying and detaining women for not wearing a hijab in public.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iranian-state-media-seems-to-dismiss-reports-morality-police-is-being-abolished-540022">morality police</a> would “issue warnings and then introduce to the judicial system people who unfortunately insist on their norm-breaking behaviour without concern for the consequences of their covering that is outside of the norm,” &nbsp;Montazeralmahdi was quoted as saying by the state media.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a report by Al Jazeera, the officers have been tasked to warn both women and men to crack down on people whose covering is not deemed appropriate in the Islamic Republic. However, following the nationwide protests, morality police had largely disappeared from the Iranian streets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But it was not the end of Iranian officials’ bid to enforce the dress code which has been in place since the aftermath of the Islamic revolution of 1979. Over the months, Tehran deployed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/middle-east/iran-finds-new-methods-to-enforce-hijab-law-calls-it-a-legal-issue-reports-550523">other measures</a> like closure of businesses whose staff do not adhere to the rules and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/iran-to-install-surveillance-cameras-in-public-places-to-nab-unveiled-women-580663">installing cameras</a> in public places to track down offenders.</p>

<p>According to a report by the Associated Press, on Sunday, Iranian officials returned to the traditional ways where men and women of the morality police could be seen patrolling the streets in marked vans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last week, the police arrested Mohammed Sadeghi, a young and relatively unknown actor after a raid on his home after he posted a video in response to another online video. The footage showed a woman being detained by the morality police, and Sadeghi, in his response wrote “Believe me, if I see such a scene, I might commit murder,” &nbsp;as per the AP.</p>

<p>While the punishment for violating the dress code of the Islamic Republic is fines or prison terms of up to two months. Iran’s reformist newspaper Shargh, on Sunday, also reported that four women received additional punishment which included attending “psychological classes” as well as driving bans.</p>

<p>The announcement came a day after Jafar Montazeri said that "both parliament and the judiciary are working (on the issue)" of whether the law requiring women to cover their heads needs to be changed.</p>

<p>However, he did not specify what could be modified in the law by the two bodies, which are both largely in the hands of conservatives.</p>

<p>The decision also comes in the wake of intense pressure from the opposition parties to abolish the morality police units.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Saturday, the Union of Islamic Iran People Party, formed by relatives of former reformist president Mohammad Khatami, demanded that authorities “prepare the legal elements paving the way for the cancellation of the mandatory hijab law”.</p>

<p>The opposition also called for the Islamic republic to “officially announce the end of the activities of the morality police” and “allow peaceful demonstrations”, it said in a statement.</p>

In the most recent footage, which was captured on camera on Wednesday in Argentina Square in Tehran, officers are seen encircling a woman who is walking along a busy street.</p>

<p>In the video, she is taken by the neck by one of them, who then drags her into a group of roughly 20 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/shooting-in-north-carolina-claims-five-lives-says-mayor-525252">policemen</a>, several of whom are riding motorbikes. Another officer comes up behind the woman and places his left hand on her bottom as she is being dragged toward one of the bikes.</p>

<p>Later, as more officers encircle her, the woman stoops to the ground. Behind the camera, a female voice can be heard stating, "They're ripping her hair."</p>

<p>As a form of protest in scenarios similar to those that have occurred in recent days across the nation, drivers in cars close to the action begin honking.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The woman is then seen getting up and fleeing the area while it appears she is not wearing a hijab, or headscarf.</p>

<p>"Look at him [the security force officer], he is laughing," the same voice from earlier in the footage is heard saying at this point.</p>

<p>The incident is being looked into, according to the police public relations office in Tehran, said state news agency Irna.</p>

<p>The police statement does not give details of what happened, but says that "enemies using psychological warfare tried to cause public anxiety and incite violence".</p>

<p>The US on Thursday (September 22) announced sanctions on Iran's morality police which is in news due to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who was taken into custody over "unsuitable attire". Amini's death in custody has sparked fierce protests across Iran. The US said it held the morality police responsible for Amini's death.</p>

<p>The US Treasury Department also accused the morality police of violating the rights of peaceful protesters and said it had imposed sanctions on seven senior Iranian military and security officials, including the chief of the Iranian army's ground forces.</p>

<p>Public protests in Iran are not showing any signs of abatement. Protesters also torched police stations and vehicles earlier on Thursday. They were reports of security forces coming under attack. Iranian authorities have said that there will be an investigation into the cause of Amini's death.</p>

<p>"Mahsa Amini was a courageous woman whose death in Morality Police custody was yet another act of brutality by the Iranian regime’s security forces against its own people," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.</p>

<p>"The Iranian government needs to end its systemic persecution of women and allow peaceful protest," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a separate statement.</p>

<p>Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of US House of Representatives also tweeted in support of the protests.</p>

<p>"The courageous voices of the Iranian people are being heard around the world. The United States Congress joins them in mourning the horrific death of Mahsa Amini. Tehran must end its violent, systematic campaign of abuse against women and girls," Pelosi tweeted.</p>

The US on Thursday (September 22) announced sanctions on Iran's morality police which is in news due to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who was taken into custody over "unsuitable attire". Amini's death in custody has sparked fierce protests across Iran. The US said it held the morality police responsible for Amini's death. The US Treasury Department also accused the morality police of violating the rights of peaceful protesters and said it had imposed sanctions on seven senior Iranian military and security officials, including the chief of the Iranian army's ground forces. Public protests in Iran are not showing any signs of abatement. Protesters also torched police stations and vehicles earlier on Thursday. They were reports of security forces coming under attack. Iranian authorities have said that there will be an investigation into the cause of Amini's death. "Mahsa Amini was a courageous woman whose death in Morality Police custody was yet another act of brutality by the Iranian regime’s security forces against its own people," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement. "The Iranian government needs to end its systemic persecution of women and allow peaceful protest," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a separate statement. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of US House of Representatives also tweeted in support of the protests. "The courageous voices of the Iranian people are being heard around the world. The United States Congress joins them in mourning the horrific death of Mahsa Amini. Tehran must end its violent, systematic campaign of abuse against women and girls," Pelosi tweeted. The senior officials designated included the morality police's head, Mohammad Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi; the commander of the Iranian army's ground forces, Kiyumars Heidari; and Esmail Khatib, Iran’s minister of intelligence, the Treasury said. It identified the others as Haj Ahmad Mirzaei, head of the morality police's Tehran division during Amini’s detention and death; Salar Abnoush, deputy commander of Iran's hardline Basij militia; Qasem Rezaei and Manouchehr Amanollahi of Iran's Law Enforcement Forces.
