Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India would be the major driver of global energy demand in the years to come, but will hold down carbon emissions even as its power consumption soars.

"India is set to nearly double its energy consumption over the long term," Modi said in the inaugural address at the conference India Energy Forum by CERAWeek.

India has implemented a series of reforms in recent years, including setting up a gas trading exchange and granting marketing freedom to producers, to boost its local output.

Modi said even international agencies that project a contraction in global energy demand to continue for next few years expect Indian demand to rise.

"Our energy sector will be growth-centric, industry friendly and environment conscious. We are well on track to meet the commitment we made to the global community," he said.

"India's Energy Plan aims to ensure energy justice. That too while fully following our global commitments for sustainable growth. This means more energy to improve the lives of Indians. But, with a smaller carbon foot-print."

India is set to raise its annual refining capacity from 250 million tonnes to 400 million tonnes by 2025, while Indian airlines are projected to double their fleet size to 1200 by 2024, Modi said.

To cut its carbon emissions India aims to raise the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030 from the current 6.2% and lift its renewable energy generation to 175 gigawatts by 2022 and to 450 gigawatts by 2030.

An international report on the&nbsp;Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) compared and estimated the&nbsp;major economic costs and its benefits associated with sanitation improvement during the three years of this mission.

The report has been authored by&nbsp;Guy Huttona, Sumeet Patilb, Avni Kumar, Nicolas Osbert and Francis Odhiambo, and is titled 'Comparison of the costs and benefits of the Clean India Mission'.

"On 2nd October 2014, the Indian Prime Minister, Hon Narendra Modi, launched the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM - Clean India Mission) and announced that India aimed to be open defecation free (ODF) by October 2019; an objective whose fulfilment has been reported by the Government of India," the report said.

As per the study, the annual economic gains from household sanitation are worth $727 per household which stem mainly out of the savings associated with reduced diarrhoea incidence (55 per cent) and from sanitation access time savings (45 per cent).

The authors of the report believe that the enormity of the task cannot be underestimated, considering the size and diversity of the country.

"In the year 2015, 59 per cent of rural households and 12 per cent of urban households in India did not have a sanitary toilet despite more than a decade of sanitation programs such as the Total Sanitation Campaign and later Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (sanitized India campaign), leaving 522 million people still practicing open defecation nationally," the paper said.

The authors studied how the government not only had to simply build toilets but also bring widescale changes "in social norms and behaviours to ensure proper usage and maintenance of these facilities."

As per the report, the annual benefits of sanitation under SBM–Gramin (SBM-G) are $727 plus $294 one-off property value benefit.

An interesting thing here is that majority of the annual benefits (which are 55 per cent)&nbsp;are health-related ($402).

"The average medical cost per episode of diarrheal diseases at any type of health facility was $63, which is saved when an episode is averted," the report continued.

The average duration of an illness episode was 1.8 days with an average 1.34 health facility visits. "Of the savings in lost time in illness and caretaking, 52 per cent of the value accrued to the patient and 48 per cent the caregiver.&nbsp;Substantial health benefits were due to the reductions in premature death, valued at US$ 249 per year per household. Significant time is spent in accessing sanitation outside the house by those who do not have or use a household toilet," the report states.

It also stated that the value of time savings of a household in India where all members are using a toilet is nearly&nbsp;US$ 325 per household per year.

The investment in building a toilet, too, therefore, is being perceived as a positive step, as the value of the property has seen an average increase of&nbsp;US$ 294.

Indian government provided subsidies to more than two-thirds (69.5 per cent) of households with an average US$ 183 support, and "of these households, 63.8 per cent made their own investment to supplement the government subsidy, which averaged an additional US$ 154."

In Europe, America and other countries, the number of cases have seen a hike yet again after seeing a decline in the past, he noted.

"COVID-19 fatality rate in India is 83 for one million population, while this is more than 600 in countries like USA, Brazil, Spain," Modi said in his 12-minute long address, adding, "the&nbsp;government is making all efforts to ensure that vaccine, whenever it is launched, reaches every Indian."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday assured the United Nations that the largest democracy of the world would help other nations in the development of a coronavirus vaccine.

PM Modi, in his UNGA address, also did not mince words in making&nbsp;a strong pitch&nbsp;for a more prominent role for&nbsp;India in UN's decision-making process. He also&nbsp;stressed&nbsp;the role New Delhi has played and continues to play in the international arena.

"Over 150 countries were sent medical supplies by Indian pharmaceuticals during the coronavirus pandemic. India's vaccine production will help in bringing the world out of the pandemic. We are moving towards Phase 3 of clinical trials. We are increasing infrastructure and will help others increase it," PM Modi said, in his pre-recorded video statement to the landmark General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly.

"India is proud of the fact that it is one of the founding members of the United Nations. On this historic occasion, I have come to this global platform to share the sentiments of 1.3 billion people of India," Modi said, adding, "if we were to make an objective assesment of the performance of UN over the last 75 years, we see several stellar achievements. But at the same time, there are also several instances that point to the need for a serious introspection of the work of the United Nations."

"The whole world has been battling the coronavirus pandemic for over eight to nine months now. Where is the United Nations in this joint fight against the pandemic? Where is its effective response?"

He also said, "Reforms in the responses, in the processes, and in the very character of the UN &nbsp;is the need of the hour. It is a fact that the faith and respect that the UN enjoys among the 1.3 billion people in India is unparalleled."

"Indians are waiting for the reform of UN. They are worried whether the process will reach a logical end. Till when will India be kept away from the UN's decision-making process?" he said.

Modi also emphasised that he expected a better guidance and better supervision of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

"India has always stressed on good for the whole world in the UN. India is looking at an extended role in the UN. India began International Day of non-violence and Yoga was given by India. He said that while it is a fact that the faith and respect that the United Nations enjoys among the 1.3 billion people in India is "unparalleled", it is also true that the people of India have been waiting for a long time for the process for the reforms of the United Nations to get completed.

"Today, people of India are concerned whether this reform-process will ever reach its logical conclusion," he said, adding that every Indian today, while seeing the contribution of India in the world organisation, aspires for India's expanded role in the United Nations.

"Reform in the responses, in the processes, and in the very character of the United Nations is the need of the hour," he emphasised.

India has been spearheading decades-long efforts to reform the Security Council, saying a structure set up in 1945 does not reflect contemporary realities of the 21st Century and is ill-equipped to handle current challenges.

There is widespread support, including by four out of the five permanent members of the Security Council - US, UK, France and Russia - for a permanent seat for India at the Council.

Modi said India is a country which is the largest democracy of the world, with more than 18 per cent of the world population, has hundreds of languages, dialects, many sects and ideologies, which was a leading global economy for centuries and also endured hundreds of years of foreign rule.

"When we were strong, we were never a threat to the world, when we were weak, we never became a burden on the world," he said.

Modi emphasised that the world of today is a completely different era from the world of 1945 when the global situation, sources-resources, problems-solutions were all quite different.

"With the changing times, if we don't change, then the drive needed to bring change will also get weakened," he said.

An objective assessment of the performance of the United Nations over the last 75 years would yield several stellar achievements but at the same time, there are also several instances that point to the need for a "serious introspection of the work of the United Nations," he said.

"Several terrorist attacks shook the world and rivers of blood have continued to flow by," he said.

"During those times and even today, can we suggest that efforts of the United Nations to tackle these issues were sufficient," he said.

Modi said India will not hesitate to raise its voice against the enemies of humanity, including terrorism, smuggling of illegal weapons, drugs and money-laundering, and will always speak in support of peace, security and prosperity.

"Starting from January next year, India will also fulfill its responsibility as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. I express my gratitude to all fellow member states who have bestowed this trust upon India," he said, referring to the overwhelming support the country received during the election in June.

"As the world's largest democracy, we will bring our years of rich experience for the benefit of the whole world," he added.

"In the changed circumstances of the post-pandemic era, we are moving forward with the vision of a 'Self-reliant India'," which will also be a force multiplier for the global economy, he said.

As the UN marks 75 years of its existence, the 193-member UN General Assembly adopted a forward-looking political declaration that gave a clarion call for strengthening mechanism to combat terrorism, reformed multilateralism, inclusive development and better preparedness to deal with challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Modi said, "For today's interconnected world, we need a reformed multilateralism that reflects today's realities, gives voice to all stakeholders, addresses contemporary challenges and focuses on human welfare."

He added India looks forward to working with all other nations towards this end.

"Our working methods need to keep pace and adapt. We support the ongoing reforms by the Secretary-General. We reiterate our call for reforms of three of the principal organs of the United Nations. We commit to instill new life in the discussions on the reform of the Security Council and continue the work to revitalise the General Assembly and strengthen the Economic and Social Council."

Addressing the special commemorative event on the UN's 75th anniversary, Modi said, "75 years ago, a new hope arose from the horrors of war. For the first time in human history, an institution was created for the entire world."

He said as a founding signatory of the UN Charter, India was part of that noble vision, which reflected India's own philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', which sees all creation as a family.

India is among the largest troop contributors to UN Peacekeeping Missions, having provided over 200,000 troops in nearly 50 of the 71 peacekeeping missions mandated over the past six decades.

India has lost more peacekeepers in the line of duty than any other UN member state and over the last 70 years, more than 160 Indian military, police and civilian personnel have lost their lives while serving in UN peacekeeping missions around the world.

The NEP-2020 is directed towards major reforms in both school and higher education levels.

"The new National Education Policy strives for making India into an equitable and vibrant knowledge society. It envisions an India-centred education system that contributes directly to transforming India into a global superpower," the statement said.

It added that the comprehensive transformation the NEP aims will bring about a paradigm shift in the country's education system and create an enabling and reinvigorated educational ecosystem for a new 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' as envisaged by the prime minister.

Various webinars, virtual conferences, and conclaves on many aspects of the National Education Policy 2020 are being organised across the country.

The Ministry of Education and University Grants Commission had earlier organised a 'Conclave on Transformational Reforms in Higher Education under National Education Policy-2020', which was addressed by Modi.
