The DMK Friday announced the names of constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry where the party and its allies will field their candidates for the second phase of the general elections to be held on April 18.

There are 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and one in neighbouring Puducherry, voting for all of which will be held in a single phase.

Stalin also named his party-led coalition the "Secular Progressive Alliance."

Addressing a press conference, Stalin said the DMK's 20 seats include Chennai (North), Chennai (South), Chennai (Central), Tuticorin and Pollachi.

Hoping to extend its 2016 electoral success to the parliamentary polls also, the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu opted to field its candidates in 20 seats across the state including the three in Chennai where it has a sizeable number of MLAs.

Pollachi, a relatively quiet town near Coimbatore, is in the news following a sexual harassment case which has created an outrage across the state.

The DMK's other seats are: Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram (SC), Arakkonam,&nbsp;Vellore, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Salem, Nilgiris (SC), Dindigul, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Thenkasi (SC) and Tirunelveli.

The Congress, which has been allotted the lion's share of seats (10) among the allies, will contest from nine constituencies in Tamil Nadu, and the lone seat in Puducherry.

It will also field its nominees in Tiruvallore (SC), Krishnagiri, Karur, Theni, Virudunagar and Kanniyakumari, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli and Arani seats, Stalin said.

The CPI(M) has been allotted Coimbatore and Madurai seats, while the CPI will fight from Tirupur and Nagapattinam, a reserved constituency.

The pro-Dalit VCK has been given Villupuram and Chidambaram, both reserved segments. The Vaiko-led MDMK has been allotted the Erode constituency.

Recalling the seat-sharing agreement with Vaiko, the DMK chief said the MDMK will also be given a Rajya Sabha seat at an appropriate time.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi (KMDK) will field their nominees from Ramanathapuram and Namakkal, respectively, while the India Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) has been allotted Perambalur seats, he said.

Stalin said in the last couple of years, the coalition constituents had been taking forward various protests and struggles against the "follies" of the BJP-led government at the Centre and the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu.

That friendship has now transformed into an alliance, he said, adding the coalition partners came together on ideology and the partnership was not based on any 'bargain.'

He claimed that the NDA in the state, headed by his party's archrival the AIADMK, will lose the polls and that coalition led by his party will secure a "grand victory."

A question, which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, is now doing the rounds: “Is there a political alternative for Tamil Nadu, away from the two Dravidian parties?”

A brief history of Tamil Nadu should be mentioned: Pre-1947: DK Party launched by Periyar. 1947-1967: Congress Party rules the state. 1967: DMK wins assembly elections. 1972: MGR leaves DMK to form the ADMK. 1987: Death of MGR, Jayalalithaa eventually takes over. 1987-2018: Political power alternates between DMK and ADMK, with the latter dominating.

That times change, as also the mood of the electorate, is not always appreciated by political parties. Let us trace the evolution of political ideas in Tamil Nadu during the past half-century. From 1947 to 67, when the Congress was the ruling party, the dominant political philosophy was Democratic Socialism. Between 1967 and 1972, DMK gave a new direction with the eradication of the caste system and establishing a strong Tamil identity. 
 
From 1972 to 1987, the ADMK pursued poverty alleviation and social justice. Again from 1987 to 2015, both DMK and ADMK, with the latter dominating, continued with further poverty alleviation and social justice. From 2015 till now, the ADMK effected a paradigm shift in the political narrative with the state-wide launch of the Amma canteen, which has been a big, bold attempt at food security in the state.

Coming up with new narratives is a big challenge that calls for imagination and foresight. Clearly, narratives do not drop from heaven. But they creep into the mind that has struggled to understand and cope with major problems. Here is a list of such problems/questions: With a million Indians entering the labour market every month, the country faces a formidable social and economic challenge, aggravated by the relentless march of technology. A problem crying out for an innovative response, such as the Congress Party’s 100-day National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The long-held dream of linking the country’s major rivers. Where do we start and how do we go about it? Is the steady flow of subsidies from the state robbing the average citizen of his will to work? How do we counter this trend, without abandoning the core idea of social justice? Inter-state disputes are on the rise, eg. sharing of river waters. Can we not come up with an approach to such disputes that encourages spontaneous, inter-state cooperation? Should politics continue to be characterised by bitter, inter-party rivalry? Can we not move to an era of mutual respect, cooperation and power sharing? What about the monster of corruption, which seems to have buried its tentacles deep into the body politic? How do we slay this monster?

Tamil Nadu has witnessed much excitement lately with two superstars entering the political arena: Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan. That these two titans of Tamil cinema chose this precise, psychological moment to enter politics, after nearly half a century of dominance by the two Dravidian parties, points to a possible paradigm shift in the politics of this state — a discontinuity, if you like, with profound implications for the future of politics in the state.

The two Dravidian parties seem rather puzzled that their old slogans no longer elicit the same response as in the past. They are beginning to wonder whether there is more to political leadership than just organising protest rallies and rushing to the TV camera.

Tamil Nadu is at the crossroads, with a profound political vacuum blurring the vision of most players on the political stage. The state’s two major Dravidian parties seem to be discovering, rather suddenly, that their old slogans and narratives no longer have the same appeal to the electorate as in the past — a problem compounded by the entry of two titans of Tamil cinema into the political arena. Both these parties, as also others in the state’s political arena, need to re-invent themselves, and come up with new narratives, if they are to remain relevant.

In search of a new political narrative in Tamil Nadu

The BJP Sunday said DMK president M K Stalin could not reiterate his 'Congress chief Rahul Gandhi for Prime Minister pitch' in the Opposition rally at Kolkata and it showed that he has diverged from his avowed stand. 
Stalin, however, said he continued to be firm in his stand of "Rahul for PM."

"Stalin said Rahul Gandhi will be the PM candidate in Chennai. He could not say so at Kolkata," BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan said here adding such contradictions outlined the contours of the Opposition front.

Later, speaking to reporters in Madurai, the BJP leader said, "had Stalin been consistent in his stand why did not he say that he proposed Rahul Gandhi for the post of Prime Minister at the mega Kolkatta rally attended by over 20 parties."

Criticising Stalin for diverging from his previous stand of supporting Rahul Gandhi for the post of Prime Minister she said, such deviation showed "his hesitancy and obstacles."

Unlike the undercurrent of incohesion in the Opposition ranks, her party led front was clear that "to save the nation, Narendra Modi should return as the Prime Minister."

The DMK chief said he proposed Rahul Gandhi's name at his party held event here whereas the Kolkata rally saw the convergence of several Opposition parties who had decided to pick the PM nominee post Lok Sabha election in keeping with the unique political scenarios in their respective States.

"It was a DMK held event where we had every right and we proposed Rahul Gandhi since people of Tamil Nadu expected and what is wrong in it," asked Stalin addressing a function.

Affirming that Rahul Gandhi would be the next Prime Minister, Stalin said "wait and see if it happens or not," and added that no leader at the Opposition rally had questioned him for backing the Congress chief for the top post.

BJP ticks off Stalin for not echoing 'Rahul for prime minister' at TMC rally

DMK president M K Stalin on Saturday said the upcoming general elections will be akin to the second freedom struggle for people of India to fight against the "radical Hinduism" of the BJP.

Stalin, speaking at TMC's mega opposition rally here, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "afraid" of a few people, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

"The next (Lok Sabha) elections will be the second fight for Independence. We will stop this poison of Hindutva and radical Hinduism from spreading. Our call is to defeat Modi and save the country," he said at the Brigade Parade Grounds here.

Criticising the central government, Stalin also accused it of working for corporate houses.

"If Modi is back in power, the country will go back 50 years," he said.

Leaders of all the opposition parties, except the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the CPI(M)-led Left Front, are taking part in the rally.&nbsp;

Crediting Vajpayee with stitching together a "healthy alliance," during his times, the DMK leader said, however, the NDA under the incumbent Prime Minister is not so.

Accusing the Prime Minister of not guarding "pluralism," Stalin said it was "strange and comical that Modi was comparing himself with Vajpayee."

Stalin recalled that Vajpayee was described as "the right person in the wrong party," by late party patriarch M Karunanidhi.

Under Vajpayee the agenda for governance was "not divisive," he said adding his party had joined the NDA (in 1999) under the late leader only for a stable government to ensure growth.

Reacting to Stalin, BJP Tamil Nadu unit chief Tamilisai Soundararajan said she does not understand why the DMK leader was interpreting Modi's remarks as an invite to his party.

Speaking to reporters at Delhi, she wondered why the DMK, which has a tie-up with Congress and having proposed Rahul Gandhi as their pick for the Prime Minister's post should feel that their party was invited.

The Prime Minister had only said that Vajpayee had shown the party the way for building successful coalitions.

Also, Modi had said that the strongest alliance is one with the people and more than "alliances we have to focus on remaining connected with people," she pointed out.

Like the celebrated leader Vajpayee, "Modi is a strong leader," she said adding "I don't know why DMK is reacting as if they were invited.. We know with whom we will go in for an alliance and we have already said we will forge ties with like-minded parties...There is enough time."

While the Prime Minister showed civility in his remarks on the coalition, she said she doubted if Stalin had it since he had reacted to the interaction her party leader had with their party workers.

In an interaction with the party's booth-level workers from five districts in Tamil Nadu on Thursday Modi spoke about Vajpayee's successful bids at building strong coalitions.

"20 years ago the visionary leader Atalji brought in a new culture in Indian politics...He gave utmost importance to regional aspirations. BJP has followed the way Atalji has shown us," Modi had said.

DMK rules out poll deal with BJP in Tamil Nadu

DMK president MK Stalin launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday and said that he proposes the name of Rahul Gandhi for PM candidate from the soil of Tamil Nadu to defeat “fascist-Nazist Narendra Modi Government”.

Stalin also hit out at the AIADMK government, saying its thoughts hovered around "commission, collection and corruption", a pet slogan and summary of his slew of charges against the incumbent regime.

"The time has come to end all such things," he said and exhorted the DMK cadre to work for the party's victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha election and for the polls to 20 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK leader reiterated that he would not be surprised if the Assembly election and the Lok Sabha polls were held simultaneously.

His remark was an apparent indication to the question of longevity the AIADMK government faced in view of the disqualification of the 18 ruling party MLAs backing Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader T T V Dhinakaran.

The DMK had approached the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption and the Madras High Court, levelling corruption charges against Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.

The Opposition party had also levelled corruption charges against state ministers C Vijayabaskar (Health), S P Velumani (Local Administration) and P Thangamani (Electricity).

The AIADMK has time and again denied the allegations and dismissed them as "politically motivated".

DMK working president MK Stalin, who was protesting outside Tamil Nadu secretariat over Sterlite Protests in Tuticorin on Thursday, was forcibly removed by the police and detained.

Even as Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) ordered the closure of Sterlite Copper Smelter plant in Tuticorin with immediate effect, Opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu staged a dharna outside the Secretariat building in Chennai.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao met with the DMK president M Karunanidhi at his residence on Sunday. He also dined with MK Stalin, the working president of the party.&nbsp;

Calling Karunanidhi as "the tallest leader of the country" he said he was lucky to have his blessings.

The meeting is seen as an attempt made by the&nbsp;Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) supremo to stitch a coalition against the BJP, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

K Chandrasekhar Rao&nbsp;also discussed his plans for meeting Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav, reports said.

However, the TRS chief denied any idea of " third front", reports said.&nbsp;

He said he did not aim to bring in some kind of "third front" and the idea of "third front"&nbsp;had been created by the media. He added that their party has not proposed any such idea. He further said that the alliance was an alignment of farmers and India's youth and not political parties.

He also said that the decision of the parties who would join the alliance would be taken in future.&nbsp;

Earlier, the Telangana chief minister had met with the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Their meeting was seen as an effort to build a non-Congress, non-BJP federal front.&nbsp;

The shutdown has been initiated demanding the formation of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC).

A DMK-led shutdown, observed on April 5, disrupted normal life in the state.

Tamil Nadu's share of Cauvery water was reduced from 177.25 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) after Supreme Court's directive that came on February 16. Karnataka's share of water was increased by 14.75 TMC.

The central government was asked to set up the Cauvery Management Board within six weeks of the Supreme Court's order the government failed to do the same within the deadline that ended on March 29.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday slammed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for its lack of transparency in latter&#39;s office affairs in relation to Sasikala Natrajan&#39;s appointment as the legislative party leader of the AIADMK.

Beaming with confidence in his leader MK Stalin and the DMK&#39;s history of defeating the AIADMK on many accounts he said, &quot;Ever since our leader MK Stalin took charge as our working president and especially as the opposition leader, he has been commended a lot for his dignified politics, courteous manner and how he brought back lot of bonhomie into politics. He is gaining appreciation. That will definitely guide us to victory in whatever we face,&quot; Sarvanan said.

He added that the DMK has seen a lot of famous political leaders in the opposition and has fought and won fair and square. &quot;Be it the case of great leader Ram Raj, Raja ji or MGR all of them we have fought them and we have won them, so there is nothing for us to&nbsp;fear, we have the faith in people, we have the faith in our ideologies and policies, and the way we have implemented our policies for the development of Tamil Nadu,&quot; Sarvanan said.

AIADMK general secretary Sasikala Natarajan on Sunday was elected as the legislative party leader of the party and with this, she is all set to take over as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Incumbent chief minister of Tamil Nadu O Panneerselvam proposed the name of Chinnamma (Sasikala Natarajan) as the AIADMK legislative party leader.

Speculations were rife that party general secretary Sasikala would be chosen as the new legislative party leader -- paving the way for her to assume the chief minister&#39;s mantle. Though many party leaders favour such a move, a few believe Panneerselvam should be retained because he is doing a good job at the helm of affairs.

Earlier, Rajya Sabha MP Sasikala Pushpa and AIADMK leader KC Palaniswamy complained to the Election Commission (EC) that Sasikala&#39;s appointment as the party&#39;s interim general secretary was carried out in an undemocratic manner. The Election Commission then issued a notice to the AIADMK, seeking clarifications in this regard.

Sasikala will be the third woman chief minister of Tamil Nadu after Janaki Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa.&nbsp;

"We have always pointed out there is no transparency in how the affairs of the AIADMK are functioning. Right from the hospital association of the chief minister or yesterday's incident on how the resignation letters were sought from top advisors of the government. It is expected that the statement will put an end to the long-running succession battle between the two brothers in one of the country&#39;s most powerful political families.&nbsp;

Stalin has been a four-time MLA in the Tamil Nadu Legislative assembly and a one-time deputy chief minister of the state.&nbsp;
