In October 2018, New Delhi and Moscow agreed on the purchase of five S-400 air defence missile systems for $5 billion.

India paid Russia the first instalment of roughly $800 million for the missile system in 2019.

The development of this upgraded missile system is claimed to have begun in 1993, almost immediately after the Soviet Union's collapse, and it largely draws from the older S-300 missile defence system in areas such as missile storage containers, launchers, and radars.

The S-400 is claimed to have started testing in late 1999 or early 2000, with the first guns going into service in 2007.

North Korea missile launch: US issues warning, China calls for restraint

North Korea on Sunday slammed the UN Security Council for holding an emergency meeting over the country's latest missile tests, accusing the member states of toying with a "time-bomb".

Pyongyang said Friday it had successfully fired an anti-aircraft missile, the latest in a series of tension-raising steps by the nuclear-armed state, which had until recently been biding its time since the change in US administrations in January.

In September, it launched what it said was a long-range cruise missile, and earlier this week tested what it described as a hypersonic gliding vehicle, which South Korea's military said appeared to be in the early stages of development.

The tests prompted UN Security Council member states to convene an emergency meeting on North Korea on Friday, called by the United States, Britain and France.

The meeting was originally due to take place on Thursday but was delayed. It lasted just over an hour and ended without a statement.

But it nonetheless angered Pyongyang, which called it a "wanton encroachment" on its sovereignty and a "serious intolerable provocation".

"Demanding that we renounce our right to self-defence means an expression of its intention not to acknowledge the DPRK as a sovereign state," said Jo Chol Su, director of the Department of International Organisations at the foreign ministry, using the abbreviation for the country's official name.

"I express strong concerns over the fact that the UNSC amused itself with the dangerous 'time-bomb' this time," he added in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

North Korea has a long history of using weapons tests as part of a carefully calibrated process to try to forward its objectives.

On Wednesday, the country's leader Kim Jong Un decried Washington's repeated offers of talks without preconditions as a "petty trick", accusing the Biden administration of continuing the "hostile policy" of its predecessors.

Under President Joe Biden, the United States has repeatedly declared its willingness to meet North Korean representatives, while saying it will seek denuclearisation.

The missile successfully detonates on impact with an unmanned aerial target after cruising in the skies for a few seconds. The air test used a modified ground system from the existing Akash weapon system. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, and other stakeholders have been congratulated on the successful trial of the Akash primary missile, according to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The successful flight test, he said, demonstrates the DRDO's capability in designing and developing world-class missile systems. G Satheesh Reddy, Chairman of the DRDO, commended the crew on the missile's successful flight test. The Indian Army and Air Force will have much greater confidence in the Akash Prime system, he said, because the Akash system has already been inducted and is now being enhanced with more powerful missiles. Watch: India successfully tests 'Akash Prime' missile, destroys aerial target

North Korea recently said that it successfully launched ballistic missiles from a train for the first time and was continuing to bolster its defences, after the two Koreas test-fired missiles.

As per Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency, the missiles were launched during a drill of a “railway-borne missile regiment”. This transported the weapons system along rail tracks in the country’s mountainous central region and accurately struck a sea target 800km away.

The state media showed what appeared to be two different missiles streaking up from rail-car launchers engulfed in orange flames along tracks, which were surrounded by dense forest.

A ballistic system that is rail-based reflects North Korea’s efforts to diversify its launch options, which now includes various vehicles and ground launch pads.

Eventually, it may also involve submarines.

Firing a missile from a train could add mobility. However, as per few experts, North Korea’s simple rail networks running through its relatively small territory would be quickly destroyed by enemies during a crisis.

Col Kim Jun-rak, a spokesman for South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff, was quoted by the Guardian as saying, "Our military assesses that North Korea is continuously developing various mobile launch equipment".

He further added that the South Korean and US militaries were continuing to examine the North’s launches.

South Korea claimed to have conducted its first underwater missile test, just hours after North Korea blasted two ballistic missiles into the sea.

The presidential office said in a statement that President Moon Jae-In supervised the test of a domestically-built submarine-launched ballistic missile on Wednesday afternoon.

It claimed that a missile fired from a submarine of the 3,000-tonne class flew a certain distance before hitting a predetermined target.

The declaration came after South Korea detected two North Korean ballistic missile launches earlier in the day.

Two reports based on satellite photos reveal that North Korea is expanding a plant used to enrich uranium for nuclear bombs, indicating that Kim Jong Un is relaxing self-imposed limits on his nuclear weapons programme placed during discussions with the US.

According to reports posted Thursday on the Arms Control Wonk and 38 North websites, the Yongbyon nuclear complex's enrichment plant has been extended, and equipment that controls its internal temperature has been removed.

According to Jeffrey Lewis of the Arms Control Wonk website, the modifications imply that North Korea aims to expand production by up to 25%.

The improvement comes after the International Atomic Energy Agency announced that North Korea had resumed plutonium production at its Yongbyon uranium enrichment plant for the first time in three years.

Because it takes many months for the reactor to fire before another lengthy operation to process the fuel rods and extract plutonium can begin, such efforts suggest Kim isn't going to meet with US President Joe Biden anytime soon.

Following months of relative silence, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has recently begun rattling his swords, indicating that he is striving to build his arsenal of weaponry.

North Korea developing nuclear, missile programs in 2021- UN Report

India remembers its People’s President and veteran scientist Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his sixth death anniversary.

For a large number of Indians, Dr Kalam is known as a fisherman’s son-turned-scientist, who rose to the top post.

Fondly remembered as the ‘Missile Man’, Kalam worked for the Indian Government’s aerospace and defence establishments.

But this very ‘Missile Man’ Kalam had a narrow miss from an explosion, during his days as a young scientist with the fledgling Indian Space Research Organization.

This and much more is revealed in veteran ISRO Scientist Padma Bhushan Nambi Narayanan’s autobiography- 'Ready To Fire'.

Cut to 1967, ISRO (then known as INCOSPAR) was in its nascent stage and operated out of a small church in the Thumba Fishing hamlet, in Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram.

Most of the scientists working there were young graduates with a drive to experiment and learn as much as they could about a new discipline - Rocket science.

All they had were experimental rockets (known as sounding rockets) that were fired to an altitude of 100kms or less.

Most of these sounding rockets were offered by friendly foreign countries to conduct upper-atmospheric experiments.

For perspective, the sounding rockets of that era are a molehill when compared to the mountains (the PSLV and GSLV series) that ISRO launches today.

While preparing for the launch of one such French Centaure rocket, a gunpowder-based igniter was being made by an ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan.

Once at the right altitude, the igniter would trigger a small explosion and release the rocket’s chemical payload into the atmosphere, thus helping conduct the experiment.

However, one day before the launch, Narayanan came across a scientific principle that their gunpowder would not fire at the height of 100km.

When Narayanan apprised Kalam of the same, he initially refused to accept it. But later, on Narayanan’s persuasion, the duo went on to test the theory.

The duo set up a contraption where a sealed jar of gunpowder was connected to a vacuum pump (to create upper atmosphere-like thin air and low pressure). Multiple attempts were made to ignite it, but the 1942 theory by scientists Able and Noble was dead right!

Wanting to see up-close, this phenomenon of gunpowder behaving in an inert manner, a young Kalam poked his nose into the gunpowder-laden jar. The countdown had started and the assistant was ready to ignite the gunpowder, but that’s when Nambi Narayanan realized that the vacuum pump was not properly connected to the jar.

This meant that the gunpowder would explode as usual.

Within a second, Nambi Narayanan leapt across and pushed Kalam down to safety, before a blast rocked the room and glass splinters flew all across. After the smoke had settled, Kalam sat up and told Nambi, "See, it fired". This was how the young duo proved that Able and Noble were right and also that gunpowder would fire at normal pressure.

While Abdul Kalam later went on to work in various roles in ISRO, DRDO, and other government organizations, Nambi Narayanan went on to become the Father of Liquid Propulsion Rocket Engine Technology in India.

Narayanan and his team had developed the Vikas Engine (which was based on the French Viking engine)-a pioneering piece of technology that is still a crucial part of the PSLV and GSLV rockets even today.

It is noteworthy that Kalam was a proponent of solid-propulsion (using solid fuels) whereas Nambi Narayanan was a proponent of liquid-propellant rockets. Nambi always believed that India had to focus on liquid propulsion, in order to build heavy-lift capability rockets.

Eventually, Nambi’s expertise and foresight in liquid propulsion proved right and gave birth to India’s PSLV and GSLV rockets, whereas Kalam’s expertise in solid propulsion gave India its arsenal of missiles.

Nambi Narayanan was heading India’s Cryogenic engine development programme in 1994 when he was wrongly jailed and tortured by the Kerala Police and Intelligence bureau.

This was a fabricated spy case, known as the ISRO spy case. The Supreme Court of India had cleared Nambi of all charges and the government of India had awarded him the Padma Bhushan. The investigation into a larger conspiracy by the Kerala Police (during the then Congress-led Govt) and Intelligence Bureau officials is underway today.

Taiwan has begun mass production of a long-range missile and is developing three other models, a senior official said on Thursday.

The rise in efforts to develop strike capacity happens amid growing Chinese pressure -- as it does not consider Taiwan independent, and tries to force the government in Taipei to accept Beijing's claims of sovereignty.

Taiwanese Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng, to this end, said developing a long-range attack capability was a priority.

"We hope it is long-range, accurate and mobile," he said, adding research on such weapons by the state-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology had "never stopped".

The institute, which is leading Taiwan's weapon development efforts, has in recent months carried out a series of missile tests off its southeastern coast.

The institute's deputy director Leng Chin-hsu said one long-range, land-based missile had already entered production, with three other long-range missiles in development. Leng said it was "not convenient" for him to provide details on how far the missile could fly.

Taiwan's armed forces have traditionally concentrated on defending the island from a Chinese attack. But President Tsai Ing-wen has stressed the importance of developing an "asymmetrical" deterrent, using mobile equipment that is hard to find and destroy, and capable of hitting targets far from Taiwan's coast.

Washington, Taipei's main foreign arms supplier, has been eager to create a military counterbalance to Chinese forces, building on an effort known within the Pentagon as "Fortress Taiwan".

Iran`s elite Revolutionary Guards unveiled an underground missile base at an undisclosed Gulf location on Friday, Iranian state media reported, at a time of heightened tension between Tehran and the United States.

"The base is one of several bases housing the Guards` Navy`s strategic missiles," the state media quoted the head of the Guards, Major General Hossein Salami, as saying.

Last year, the Guards said Iran had built underground “missile cities” along the Gulf coastline, warning of a “nightmare for Iran’s enemies”.

"These missiles have ranges of hundreds of kilometres, enjoy pinpoint accuracy and huge destructive power, and can overcome the enemy’s electronic warfare equipment," Salami said.

He said the base was "one of several bases housing the Navy’s strategic missiles".

There have been periodic confrontations in the Gulf in recent years between the Guards and the U.S. military, which has accused the Guards’ navy of sending fast attack boats to harass U.S. warships as they pass the Strait of Hormuz.

Tensions have been high between Tehran and Washington since 2018, when President Donald Trump exited the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers which limits the Islamic Republic`s nuclear programme and reimposed sanctions that have crippled the country`s economy.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards unveil underground missile base in Gulf

A missile was fired into the sky on Friday on Turkey's Black Sea coast where the military was expected to test its Russian-made S-400 defence systems.

According to a report published in Reuters, a video, taken in the coastal city of Sinop, showed a narrow column of smoke headed high into the blue sky.

In recent days Turkey had issued notices restricting air space and waters off the coastal area to allow firing tests.

Tests of the S-400s, if verified, could stoke tensions between Turkey and the United States, which sharply opposed Ankara's purchase of the weapons from Moscow on grounds they compromise shared NATO defence systems.

Turkey's defence ministry said it would neither deny nor confirm missile tests.

Washington reacted last year by suspending Turkey from its F-35 jet programme and has threatened sanctions.

Defence analyst Turan Oguz said a preliminary assessment of the colour, intensity, angle and route of the smoke in the video coincided with S-400 missiles. The angle of the column suggested the target "must not be too high".

Last year the military conducted radar tests of the surface-to-air defences, which is among the world's most advanced and can spot and track incoming aircraft at medium and long ranges.

Turkey’s air space notice, or NOTAM, restricts an area near the coastal city of Sinop for a radar test and possibly live-fire for six hours on Oct. 16. It advised aircraft to avoid the area to a height of 200,000 feet (61,000 metres).

Earlier this week, Turkey issued a maritime notice for shooting training and two others for military training. The so-called NAVTEX notices said shooting training would be held Oct. 16-17.

The S-400 surface-to-air defence system is one of the most advanced in the world with a medium to long-range radar that can spot and track incoming aircraft, directing a barrage of missiles at their targets to a range of 400 km (249 miles).

Turkey signed the S-400 deal with Russia in 2017. Deliveries of the first four missile batteries, worth $2.5 billion, began in July last year. Ankara has carried out radar tests previously but the shooting test will be a first.

Last week - after videos of the S-400 videos emerged and reports of the planned tests circulated - two US senators called again for President Donald Trump’s administration to impose sanctions on Turkey.

Missile fired where Turkey cleared way for S-400 test

After North Korea displayed its latest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at a military parade in Pyongyang on Saturday, the United States has expressed its disappointment over this chest-beating parade.

"It is disappointing to see the DPRK (North Korea) continuing to prioritize its prohibited nuclear and ballistic missile program," a US official said.

The official urged the North Korean leader to follow the agreement that the two countries had back in 2018. "The United States remains guided by the vision President Trump and Chairman Kim set forth in Singapore (in 2018) and calls on the DPRK to engage in sustained and substantive negotiations to achieve complete denuclearization."

The statement has come at a time when the two countries, led by Donald Trumo and Kim Jong Un, are unable to reach a conclusion on the denuclearization negotiations since the collapse of their Hanoi summit early last year over sanctions relief and what the North would be willing to give up in return.

The missile -- which may have been a mock-up -- was carried on an enormous and previously unseen 11-axle transporter-erector-launcher, far larger than the eight-axle Chinese-made vehicles the North has employed so far.

The display was proudly observed by the North Korean leader a few weeks before the US elections that are scheduled for November 03.

Display of ICBM has received criticism from all over the world and is being seen as a violation of several requests and orders passed by the rest of the world to put an end to the development of its arsenal throughout the diplomatic process.

Analysts also said that it was the largest road-mobile, liquid-fuelled missile anywhere in the world, and was likely to be designed to carry multiple warheads in independent re-entry vehicles (MIRVs).

Every country pays respect and show their love for their leaders in different ways. Russia, too, decided to do something special for the 68th birthday of their leader Vladimir Outin.

The Russian Chief of the army's general staff, Valery Gerasimov, shared the news of successfully testing Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile in the leader's birthday.

The strike was carried out from the Admiral Gorshkov vessel which was located in the White Sea in northern Russia. The target was a spot in the Barents Sea, which the officials were successful to aim at. The target has been hit at a distance of 450 kilometres (280 miles) in four and a half minutes after reaching hypersonic speeds of more than Mach 8.
