Amid the Ukraine war and sanctions, Russia has begun delivering the second squadron of S-400 advanced surface-to-air missile defence system to India, ahead of schedule, officials said.

The first squadron of the S-400 system arrived in India in December 2021 and has been deployed on the Punjab border to thwart any air strikes from both Pakistan and China.

India has procured five S-400 systems from Russia through a $5-billion deal signed in October 2018.

All the five units of the S-400 system, which can take down a hostile aircraft or missile at a range between 40km and 400km, are expected to be operational by 2022.

The S-400 system is capable of tracking, engaging and addressing the threat of Chinese or Pakistani fighters the moment they take off from air bases. The system can track multiple targets at multiple ranges and neutralise them simultaneously.

India decided to upgrade its military infrastructure when the country was locked in a major faceoff with China along the Line of Actual Control in July 2020. The threat of two-front war - from China and Pakistan - made India go for large scale arms deals and Russia is still one of India`s largest arms suppliers.

There were apprehension on delay in delivery of critical weapon system after Russia`s war with Ukraine. However, with delivery of the second squadron of S-400 system, India is hopeful of getting other military capabilities.

Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited India and had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and apprised them about the ongoing crisis in Ukraine while discussing bilateral ties.

As India gets set to seal the S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems with&nbsp;Russia for the Indian Air Force, US Republican Congressman&nbsp;Thornberry has cautioned the Modi government asserting that it could complicate US's ability to work on "inter-operability with India".

The &nbsp;S-400 Triumf air defence missile meant for the Indian Air Force has run into rough weather with US&nbsp;President Trump having signed an act in August last year according to which countries trading with Russia on defense and intelligence sectors would face sanctions.

Republican Congressman Mac Thornberry echoing the Trump administration's view, said: "If there is concern that any country...It's not just India that is looking at acquiring it or any country that requires that system, it will complicate our ability to work on inter-operability together."

"I hope that the Indian government will take its time and consider very carefully in acquiring that system (S-400) because of the difficulties it may present," Thornberry added.

The US law designed to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for the 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine and involvement in the Syrian civil war has put several US allies in a quandary including Indonesia and Vietnam who regularly buy Russian armaments.

The Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CATSA) forbids countries to trade with Russia which is the world’s second-largest arms exporter.

However, Thornberry did concede that the language of the Act makes it difficult for several US allies as it does not allow any "flexibility".

"There is an understanding in the administration and the Congress that some additional flexibility in that law is needed. And it's not just India that's in that situation, there other nations in that," Thornberry observed.

The US&nbsp;military on Tuesday cheered a successful, first-ever missile defence test involving a simulated attack by an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), in a major milestone for a programme meant to defend against a mounting North Korean threat.

The US&nbsp;military fired an ICBM-type missile from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands toward the waters just south of Alaska. It then fired a missile to intercept it from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Experts compare the job to hitting a bullet with another bullet and note the complexity is magnified by the enormous distances involved.

The Missile Defense Agency said it was the first live-fire test against a simulated ICBM for the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD), managed by Boeing Co, and hailed it as an &quot;incredible accomplishment&quot;.

&quot;This system is vitally important to the defence of our homeland, and this test demonstrates that we have a capable, credible deterrent against a very real threat,&quot; Vice Admiral Jim Syring, director of the agency, said in a statement.

A successful test was by no means guaranteed and the Pentagon sought to manage expectations earlier in the day, noting that the United States had multiple ways to try to shoot down a missile from North Korea.

&quot;This is one element of a broader missile defence strategy that we can use to employ against potential threats,&quot; Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told reporters.

Riki Ellison, founder of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, described the test as &quot;vital&quot; prior to launch.

&quot;We are replicating our ability to defend the United States of America from North Korea, today,&quot; Ellison said.

Failure could have deepened concern about a programme that according to one estimate has so far cost more than $40 billion. Its success could translate into calls by Congress to speed development.
