US tech firm Meta on Tuesday announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp in the second round of layoffs.

The latest retrenchment announcement comes on the back of axing 11,000 employees in November amidst the deep economic downturn the tech industry is facing. At that time, its headcount stood at 86,482 at 2022-end, up 20 per cent from a year ago.

On Tuesday, Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg in a memo to employees said that most of the cuts would happen in April and May, and will continue through the end of the year, according to Reuters news agency.

In addition to the 10,000 layoffs, the firm won’t fill the 5,000 vacancies, Zuckerberg said, adding that restructurings in the tech group would be announced in late April and cuts to business groups would come in May.

"For most of our history, we saw rapid revenue growth year after year and had the resources to invest in many new products. But last year was a humbling wake-up call," Zuckerberg wrote.

Meta gears up for fresh round of firings, thousands could lose jobs: Report

Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, is planning a fresh round of layoffs and will cut thousands of employees as soon as this week. Meta is eliminating more jobs, on top of a 13% reduction in November, in a bid to become a more efficient organization.

A little more than two years after imposing its unilateral terms of service on users, Meta-owned WhatsApp has agreed to be more transparent about the privacy policy changes, announced the European Commission on Monday.

WhatsApp has agreed that it will explain how the new privacy laws and changes made to it affect the rights of EU users.

"Consumers have a right to understand what they agree to and what that choice entails concretely, so that they can decide whether they want to continue using the platform," observed Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders.

Earlier in 2021, WhatsApp in a hasty manner pushed a heavy, jargon-filled, non-cohesive update to its terms of service, violating the bloc's laws.

Moreover, it forced users to accept the update or otherwise risk losing access to the platform. The company did not make it clear exactly what was changing in the new update which confused the general public.

A little more than two years after imposing its unilateral terms of service on users, Meta-owned WhatsApp has agreed to be more transparent about the privacy policy changes, announced the European Commission on Monday.

In July 2021, a complaint was lodged at the European Commission and with the European network of consumer authorities by the Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs (BEUC) - an umbrella group for 46 independent consumer organisations from 32 countries. The bloc soon issued a series of warnings to the company to get its act right and fix the issues plaguing the platform. Meta's fortune expected to soar by $1.7 billion with paid verification service

On Sunday, Meta announced that it would be launching a paid subscription service, which will cost $11.99 for the web or $14.99 for mobile. Now, critics have raised deep concerns about the way the social media giant has chosen to structure its new offering. Experts say that the new service will create a "digital caste system" of haves and have-nots. The paid service will make available to its subscribers a verification badge, extra protection against impersonation, direct access to customer support and added visibility. Users too have ridiculed the service, trolling Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg with trolls and memes.

Blue ticks have become synonymous with a status symbol in society. Thus, by following the footsteps of Twitter, meta has now come up with its very own verification system called "Meta Verified", which shall enable users to get verified on both Instagram and Facebook.

The model will allow users to get verified by Meta; if done, they will get a blue tick against their names, allowing users to get the hype they crave.

The subscription priced at $11.99 per month on the web against the $14.99 for iPhones and Android phones will ensure additional layers of security, protecting creators from impersonation, thereby safeguarding their privacy rights.

Meta has priced this model, considering the larger user base in India. It has tried to keep the balance between the premium fee of Netflix and the newly launched Twitter blue, which costs around $11 per month.

Meta has kept the verification process fairly simple; any user can get verified with government identification.

They will get a 'Meta Verified Badge', availing their exclusive access to customer service, enhanced visibility and reach on the platform, and many other exclusive features. However, there will be no limitation on ads in any case.

The CEO of meta, Mark Zuckerburg, has followed in the footsteps of Twitter; it was only after a reverse engineer spotted familiar code embedding this new feature that the company confirmed the news of it coming out.

Previously, Twitter launched a similar service back in November 2022, but it failed following the abuse of impersonating brands and celebrities.

Meta, however, has ensured this safety level by keeping an age limit of 18 years as a prerequisite for verification; a government ID, profile photo, and name are also required. That is not alone. This service will implement a proactive monitoring system to ensure the solid security of the platform.

Mark Zuckerburg was set to launch several other new products as he looked to "empower creators to be more productive and creative".

A report by the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, on Friday (February 17) claimed that Facebook parent company Meta gave thousands of employees below-average ratings in a recently concluded round of performance review. This comes months after the tech giant announced that it would fire 11,000 employees and after the recent poor reviews the company leadership believes that it would prompt more workers to quit in the upcoming weeks, reported the WSJ.

The people speaking to the publication also said that the company has also cut a bonus metric which is one of the several steps senior executives are taking after CEO Mark Zuckerberg dubbed 2023 as the “year of efficiency”. Additionally, the sources also told WSJ that the company leadership is hoping that the subpar reviews would lead to employees quitting in the upcoming week. However, if enough people do not quit, Meta may consider another round of layoffs, said the report.

Thousands of employees at Facebook parent company Meta receive subpar reviews, signals more job cuts: Reports

Mark Zuckerberg has now increased security allowance despite the massive layoffs that have been witnessed in the big tech giant companies including Meta. Now, four million dollar hike is what he's getting as part of his security allowance for Zuckerberg.

Mark Zuckerberg's security allowance hiked amid massive layoffs

Mark Zuckerberg's security allowance is reported to have been hiked to $14 million by Facebook owner Meta amid a spell of layoffs. Social media giants owned by Meta - including Facebook and Instagram - have also recently witnessed retrenchment in what Zuckerberg defined as a "Year of Efficiency". Facebook and other American firms have been downsizing staff strength in the midst of what analysts have termed as an unspoken recession.

In a filing cited by news agency Reuters, Meta - on increasing Zuckerberg's security allowance by $4 million - said: "This increased allowance, together with the costs of Zuckerberg's existing overall security programme, are appropriate and necessary under the circumstances."

Meta has been cutting costs recently. It has also reportedly also delayed setting team budgets months after dismissing nearly 13 per cent of its global workforce. For 2023, the firm has lowered its estimates between the range of $89 billion- $95 billion, which were earlier in $94 billion-$100 billion range.

“Our management theme for 2023 is the ‘Year of Efficiency’ and we’re focused on becoming a stronger and more nimble organization,” Zuckerberg said as part of the release of Meta’s fourth-quarter earnings report.
