Apple on Friday (Apr 19) announced that it had removed WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China. This, the company said, was done in compliance with an order by the Chinese government, which reportedly cited national security concerns.

Even as Threads and WhatsApp were removed, other Meta apps, including Messenger and Instagram, were still available on the Apple app store on Friday morning in China, reported Reuters.

This removal targeting American tech services as per Bloomberg comes as the US government takes steps towards banning TikTok owned by China's ByteDance. US politicians, too, have cited national security concerns as the reason behind the push to either sell TikTok to a non-Chinese owner or be banned in the US market.

Security concerns

In a statement to Reuters, Apple said, "The Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of these apps from the China storefront based on their national security concerns."

"We are obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree," added the tech giant.

The exact cause of security concerns for the Chinese government was not clear at the time this report was published.

However, citing people with expertise in China's tech industry, Reuters reports that the government order could be related to a new rule from last August. This rule requires all apps available in the country to register with the government or risk removal.

The deadline for companies to complete registration was March end, and the regulations went into effect starting April 1st.

Meta clashes with US FTC over proposed changes to 2020 privacy agreement

Facebook owner Meta announces the shutdown of CrowdTangle, a crucial tool for tracking misinformation, just ahead of major elections worldwide, including the US. Watch in for more details!

Meta to shut down misinformation monitoring tool CrowdTangle

In a move experts have labelled "a grave step backwards", Facebook owner Meta has decided to decommission CrowdTangle, a vital digital tool for tracking viral falsehoods.

The move which is scheduled to take effect on August 14, as per experts, will disrupt efforts to detect political misinformation in a major election year.

What is CrowdTangle?

CrowdTangle, as per an AFP report, is a game-changing tool which for years has offered researchers and journalists crucial real-time transparency into the spread of conspiracy theories and hate speech on Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.

The monitoring tool, as per reports, will be replaced by another tool which researchers say lacks the same functionality and that news organisations will largely not have access to.

CrowdTangle will be replaced by a new Content Library, a technology still under development.

The tool, as per tech industry experts, including former CrowdTangle chief executive Brandon Silverman, is currently not an effective replacement, especially in a year when world-over elections are likely to see a proliferation of AI-enabled falsehoods.

While Meta claims that the Content Library will contain more comprehensive data than CrowdTangle and will be available to academics and non-profit election integrity experts, concerns remain about access for independent researchers and journalists.

However, Meta has announced that the new tool will not be accessible for-profit media. This has raised questions about transparency and accountability.

What the experts say

This move comes just three months before the 2024 US Presidential election that will see incumbent Joe Biden and Republican rival Donald Trump face off. Not only that, globally, dozens of countries will hold elections this year.

"In a year when almost half of the global population is expected to vote in elections, cutting off access to CrowdTangle will severely limit independent oversight of harms," warned Melanie Smith, director of research at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

"It represents a grave step backwards for social media platform transparency," she said.

Historically, CrowdTangle has alerted researchers about harmful activities such as foreign interference, online harassment, and incitements to violence. It played an important role in quickly identifying "misinformation, voter interference and suppression," during the 2020 US elections.

Global non-profit Mozilla Foundation, along with dozens of technology watchdogs and researchers, has urged Meta to retain CrowdTangle until at least January 2025, citing concerns about the new tool's limitations.

"Abandoning CrowdTangle while the Content Library lacks so much of CrowdTangle's core functionality undermines the fundamental principle of transparency," said the letter.

However, defending the decision, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said that the Content Library will offer "more comprehensive data than CrowdTangle" and will be accessible to academics and non-profit election integrity experts.

Snapchat, TikTok, and Meta are facing a $4.5-billion lawsuit from four Ontario school boards for allegedly hurting students, interfering with their learning, and harming their mental health, leaving educators to “manage the fallout,” according to a local news report.

In the US state of Florida, children under the age of 14 will now be banned from using social media platforms. On Monday (Mar 25), the state's governor, Ron DeSantis signed a bill that will also require 14- and 15-year-olds to get parental consent to use social media.

Termination of accounts

As per reports, the measure, which is supposed to protect children from online risks to their mental health, will require social media platforms to shut down accounts of those under 14 and those under 16 who do not have parental consent.

The bill which will become law on January 1, 2025, also requires the platforms to use a third-party verification system to screen out underage users.

In a statement, DeSantis said, "Social media harms children in a variety of ways," and that his legislation "gives parents a greater ability to protect their children."

While it doesn't name any platforms, the bill targets social media platforms with features such as "infinite scrolling," reaction metrics like likes, autoplay videos, live-streaming, and push notifications. Florida bans children under 14 from using social media; 14-15 year olds will need parental consent

The European Union has launched investigations into Apple, Meta, and Google as a part of its first investigations into “non-compliance” with the 27-nation bloc’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA), which could lead to hefty fines for the companies.

About the new law

The probes will be conducted after a sweeping new digital competition law came into effect on March 7. The law has sought to prevent big tech companies, including those in the United States, from cornering digital markets, while making it easier for users to move between competing online services, like social media platforms and browsers.

“We are not convinced that the solutions by Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Apple and Meta respect their obligations for a fairer and more open digital space for European citizens and businesses,” said EU’s internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton.

The violation of the law could lead the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, to impose fines of up to 10 per cent of a company’s total global turnover and raise it to 20 per cent for repeat offenders.

EU probe

The EU probe comes after the tech companies assured that they have deployed thousands of engineers to meet a DMA requirement of six “gatekeepers” to give users and rivals more choices.

However, the EU regulators are not convinced. Margrethe Vestager, EU antitrust chief, said that they believe that the three companies are not fully complying with the solutions that they proposed last week.

The EU officials, on Monday (Mar 25), were also asked if they were rushing the process just two weeks after the law was enacted, to which Breton said the investigations should not be a surprise.

“The law is the law. We can’t just sit around and wait,” he said, as quoted by Reuters.

Why these three companies?

The EU officials have raised concerns about constraints the tech companies place on the developers’ ability to communicate and promote their offers to the users.

The bloc’s executive arm will also check the changes Google made to its search results in Europe since, as per the new rule, it cannot give its own service preference over similar services offered by rivals.

It will also check if Apple is imposing limitations that hinder app developers from informing users about alternatives outside its own App Store that may be free of charge.

Meanwhile, Breton said Meta should offer free alternative options. This comes after the Instagram and Facebook parent company introduced a no-ads subscription service in Europe last year which triggered criticism from rivals and users.

Margrethe Vestager, the European Union's antitrust chief, issued warnings to tech giants Apple and Meta Platforms regarding their new fee structures and practices that may undermine competition and consumer choice.

Vestager's remarks come as both companies face scrutiny over their compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), aimed at fostering fair competition in the digital ecosystem.

Apple's recent announcement of a new fee structure, including a core technology fee of 50 euro cents per user account per year, has drawn attention from Vestager.

Despite Apple's efforts to comply with EU tech legislation by opening up its closed ecosystem to rivals, concerns have been raised, particularly by major app developers such as Epic Games, regarding the impact of these fees on competition.

Vestager emphasized the need to investigate whether Apple's fee structure hinders the objectives of the DMA, limiting users' ability to benefit from increased choice.

In an interview with Reuters, Vestager expressed reservations about Meta's new subscription fees for Facebook and Instagram.

While Meta has proposed reducing its monthly subscription fee, concerns persist regarding the implications for competition and consumer welfare.

Vestager stressed the importance of engaging in dialogue with Meta to ensure compliance with the DMA and to explore alternative monetisation methods that do not impede competition.

The Austrian privacy activist Max Schrems highlighted broader concerns beyond the fee levels, emphasising the significance of contextual advertising as an alternative revenue model.

She warned that such behaviour could trigger antitrust investigations, highlighting the need for fair competition and market openness.

Apple's assertion regarding security risks associated with changes has drawn scrutiny, with Vestager emphasising that the DMA primarily focuses on promoting competition rather than addressing security concerns.

Feedback from developers will play a crucial role in determining whether investigations into potential DMA violations will be initiated against the six companies subject to scrutiny.

Facebook-parent Meta on Friday won an appeal overturning a previous court ruling that barred it from using its name in Brazil due to confusion with another company.
