A report says that the royal family has extraordinary restrictions on media coverage in its royal events. Reports say the monarchy can cut and remove clips from a media coverage before it goes on repeat. Is Britain facing a threat to freedom of speech?

Gravitas: Reports | News broadcasters face 'extraordinary restrictions' from the Royals

The top court of India demanded that the News Broadcasters and Digital Association (NBDA), the regulatory watchdog established by TV news broadcasters, strengthen the current structure after questioning the effectiveness of the self-regulatory measures implemented by TV news stations. The existing self-regulation procedure used by news stations was deemed "ineffective" by a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra, who also questioned if the current monetary fine levied by the regulating body is sufficient.

A Mexican journalist was shot dead by assailants on Saturday in a store parking lot in the southern tourist town of Acapulco, stated the regional authorities. This is the second killing of a journalist that has taken place in the country within a week.

Prosecutors stated that an investigation has been initiated over homicide with a firearm in the killing of Nelson Matus. The incident took place days after another journalist was killed in a country, which is considered among the most dangerous places for members of the press in the world.

Director of news outlet Lo Real de Guerrero Matus was shot when he was getting inside his car which was parked in a thrift shop parking lot.

In a statement, the Guerrero state prosecutor's office said that it "reiterates its commitment to exhaust every line of investigation" into his death.

Matus had been working as a journalist for 15 years, and had specialised in covering violence, said Mexico delegate for press freedom organisation Reporters Without Borders Balbina Flores, while speaking to AFP.

Since the year 2000, more than 150 journalists have been murdered in Mexico, according to the group. This week, the officials stated that they found the body of fellow journalist Luis Martin Sanchez "with signs of violence," after he had been reported missing.

Germany's leading newspaper, Bild, is set to implement artificial intelligence (AI) in place of various editorial positions as part of a cost-cutting initiative totalling around US$113 million.&nbsp;This move is expected to result in numerous job redundancies, affecting tasks that can now be performed by AI and automated processes in the digital realm.

Axel Springer SE, Europe's largest media publisher and owner of Bild, informed its staff via email that positions such as editors, print production staff, subeditors, proofreaders, and photo editors will undergo significant changes or cease to exist altogether, according to a report from the rival newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine (FAZ), reported the Guardian.

It said the roles of “editors, print production staff, subeditors, proofreaders and photo editors will no longer exist as they do today”, according to the email.

In February, CEO Mathias Döpfner announced the company's transition into a "purely digital media company." In line with this, the recent message emphasises the potential role of AI tools, including ChatGPT, in revolutionising independent journalism. Döpfner stated that these tools have the capability to greatly improve the quality of journalism or even replace it entirely.

<h2>AI's impact on journalism: A shift towards content creation and aggregation</h2>

CEO Mathias Döpfner predicted that AI would excel in tasks such as aggregating information, emphasising the need for publishers to focus on delivering exceptional original content, including investigative journalism and unique commentary, to stay relevant in the evolving media landscape.

This perspective echoes the belief that only publishers capable of producing the highest quality original content will thrive amidst the growing influence of AI technologies. Axel Springer SE joins other news publishers, such as BuzzFeed, the Daily Mirror, and the Daily Express, in exploring the potential of AI in their operations.

While AI tools like ChatGPT can generate sophisticated texts across various genres, from essays to poems, it is important to note that these responses can sometimes be inaccurate or even fabricated. The use of AI in journalism raises important questions about the future of content creation, the role of journalists, and the accuracy and integrity of AI-generated content.

Men's Journal and tech website Cnet have embraced the use of AI to produce articles, which are subsequently reviewed for accuracy by human editors.

However, Cnet admitted limitations in January when it was discovered that over half of the articles required corrections. In another instance, the publishers of the German magazine Die Aktuelle faced repercussions after publishing an entirely AI-generated "interview" with Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.

The seven-time F1 world champion, who has been out of the public eye since a skiing accident in 2013, suffered a severe brain injury. His family has taken legal action against the magazine's publishers, leading to the editor's dismissal and an apology to the Schumacher family.

These incidents underscore the challenges and ethical considerations associated with AI-generated content, raising questions about reliability, accountability, and the potential impact on individuals and their reputations.

Bild plans to cut around 200 editorial jobs and reduce regional editions from 18 to 12 as part of cost-cutting measures, according to FAZ. Similar changes may be expected at Die Welt.

German tabloid embraces AI revolution: Bild to replace editorial jobs with artificial intelligence

The police stated that a radio broadcaster was shot dead outside his home in the central Philippines on Wednesday, adding to the long list of journalists killed in the country.

50-year-old Cresenciano Bunduquin was shot by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro province, said Colonel Samuel Delorino, while speaking to Agence France-Presse.

After Bunduquin was shot, one of the assailants was killed after the gunmen were hit by Bunduquin’s son with his vehicle as they tried to flee the scene of the attack at pre-dawn.&nbsp;

“The remaining suspect was able to run off. The hot pursuit operation is still ongoing,” Delorino stated.&nbsp;

The archipelago nation has turned out as the most dangerous place for journalists in the world and most of the killers are able to flee and remain unpunished. Radio broadcasters have often become the target outside the capital.&nbsp;

Since President Ferdinand Marcos came to power in June 2022, Bunduquin is the third journalist who has been murdered.&nbsp;

<h2>Broadcaster's ‘hard-hitting’ reports on local issues</h2>

Bunduquin was also the host of a programme which was aired on radio station 101.7 DWXR and on Facebook, stated station manager Jester Joaquin. He added that the broadcaster presented “hard-hitting” reports on local issues.

The radio broadcaster was recently outspoken about a recent oil spill which had affected the province, illegal gambling and politics.

“He told me before that he’s receiving threats but he didn’t elaborate,” Joaquin said, while speaking AFP. “He mentioned to me that he wanted a change in his line of work, that’s why he put up a chicken farm, because he wants to go quiet," he added.&nbsp;

Delorino said that police were carrying out an investigation if Bunduquin had an enemy or if he was involved in a personnel quarrel.

National Union of Journalists of the Philippines chairman Jonathan de Santos said, “Bunduquin’s killing further shows that journalists in the Philippines still operate under threat despite our improvement in the press freedom index and the relatively friendlier relations that media has with the current administration."

“When perpetrators of attacks on media are not held to account and victims of these attacks do not get justice, future attacks become more likely," he added.&nbsp;

Facebook parent Meta platforms Inc has warned that it will be forced to remove news from its platform entirely if the US Congress passed the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act. Meta argued that broadcasters benefitted by posting content on their platform. If passed, the act will make it easier for news companies to negotiate with tech giants like Meta and Alphabet for their content. Meta had taken a similar stance in Australia where a similar law was passed.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone in a tweet said the Act fails to recognize that publishers and broadcasters put content on the platform because "it benefits their bottom line - not the other way around."

The law in Australia took effect in March 2021 after talks with the big tech firms led to a brief shutdown of Facebook news feeds in the country, has largely worked, a government report said.

Since the News Media Bargaining Code took effect, various tech firms including Meta and Alphabet had inked more than 30 deals with media outlets, compensating them for content which generated clicks and advertising dollars, the report added.

As part of a crackdown on dissent, Chinese authorities have heightened surveillance&nbsp;and harassment of government critics&nbsp;ahead of the Communist party's impending 20th congress, its most important political meeting.

Since mid-September, a number of petitioners and activists trying to influence the government have been imprisoned or placed under house arrest throughout China, and many human rights attorneys have been intimidated, followed, and harassed. They claim that officials are making every effort to suppress them ahead of the event, which is slated to begin on Sunday, because they are concerned that their critique&nbsp;of the government would cause societal unrest and harm the regime, reported the Guardian.&nbsp;

At the congress, China's President Xi Jinping is anticipated to win a historic third term as party head, prompting the greatest level of security.

“Every morning, the police would call me to check my plan for the day. They order me not to go anywhere, see anyone or say anything to them,” said one lawyer who was disbarred and had his law firm closed for defending politically sensitive cases.&nbsp;The message is clear: “We are watching your every move.”

The lawyer, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation, claimed that Chinese social media companies block all of his posts and that even when he writes on Twitter by sneaking through the firewall, the local police summon him and give warnings for doing so.

Lawyer Yu Wensheng, who has served four years in prison, was prevented from leaving his housing complex on Wednesday by security personnel. Prior to the congress, he said that police had advised him against visiting foreign embassies, speaking with media, or posting on Twitter. He continued, saying, "I guess they're trying to terrify us, but I'm not going to back down."

Wang Quanzhang, another&nbsp;rights attorney who was imprisoned on subversion charges for defending activists, claimed that authorities had increased surveillance of his family.

Li Heping, a seasoned attorney, was treated similarly. Since the middle of September, according to Wang Qiaoling, his wife, plainclothes police officers have been manning their housing compound and police cars have been following them wherever they go. She described it as an attempt to intimidate them. Security cameras surrounding the home of lawyer Xie Yanyi have all just been refurbished, and police cars are stationed outside his gated community. Lawyer Jiang Tianyong continues to be closely monitored in his small hometown in rural Henan with little access to the outside world.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/chinas-20th-communist-party-congress-kicks-off-sunday-what-you-need-to-know-525319">Chinese</a> authorities have historically used broad accusations like "provoking disturbance" to target those they perceive as being a pain in their side.

Observers claim that because dissidents and activists are frequently accused of "picking fights and causing problems" for their protests, the crackdown on them would have fallen under this campaign.

However, despite its size, the dissenting voices could not be fully silenced. Just three days before the congress that will re-install Xi as the party's head for the next 10 years, a rare protest against the communist party and its policies in Beijing on Thursday heightened political tensions.

As part of a crackdown on dissent, Chinese authorities have heightened surveillance and harassment of government critics ahead of the Communist party's impending 20th congress, its most important political meeting.

As part of a crackdown on dissent, Chinese authorities have heightened surveillance and harassment of government critics ahead of the Communist party's impending 20th congress, its most important political meeting. Since mid-September, a number of petitioners and activists trying to influence the government have been imprisoned or placed under house arrest throughout China, and many human rights attorneys have been intimidated, followed, and harassed. They claim that officials are making every effort to suppress them ahead of the event, which is slated to begin on Sunday, because they are concerned that their critique of the government would cause societal unrest and harm the regime, reported the Guardian. At the congress, China's President Xi Jinping is anticipated to win a historic third term as party head, prompting the greatest level of security. Also read | ‘Dictatorial traitor': Banners calling for Xi Jinping's ouster appear ahead of CCP meeting “Every morning, the police would call me to check my plan for the day. They order me not to go anywhere, see anyone or say anything to them,” said one lawyer who was disbarred and had his law firm closed for defending politically sensitive cases. The message is clear: “We are watching your every move.” The lawyer, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation, claimed that Chinese social media companies block all of his posts and that even when he writes on Twitter by sneaking through the firewall, the local police summon him and give warnings for doing so. Lawyer Yu Wensheng, who has served four years in prison, was prevented from leaving his housing complex on Wednesday by security personnel. Prior to the congress, he said that police had advised him against visiting foreign embassies, speaking with media, or posting on Twitter. He continued, saying, "I guess they're trying to terrify us, but I'm not going to back down." Wang Quanzhang, another rights attorney who was imprisoned on subversion charges for defending activists, claimed that authorities had increased surveillance of his family. Since the middle of September, according to Wang Qiaoling, his wife, plainclothes police officers have been manning their housing compound and police cars have been following them wherever they go. She described it as an attempt to intimidate them. Security cameras surrounding the home of lawyer Xie Yanyi have all just been refurbished, and police cars are stationed outside his gated community. Lawyer Jiang Tianyong continues to be closely monitored in his small hometown in rural Henan with little access to the outside world. Chinese authorities have historically used broad accusations like "provoking disturbance" to target those they perceive as being a pain in their side. Observers claim that because dissidents and activists are frequently accused of "picking fights and causing problems" for their protests, the crackdown on them would have fallen under this campaign. However, despite its size, the dissenting voices could not be fully silenced. Just three days before the congress that will re-install Xi as the party's head for the next 10 years, a rare protest against the communist party and its policies in Beijing on Thursday heightened political tensions. International&nbsp;media has covered Queen Elizabeth II's passing from every perspective, with analysts analysing every action with rapt attention and publications filled with comments.&nbsp;

However, experts have cautioned AFP that overzealous coverage like this would just inspire more people to stop watching the news altogether, worsening the industry's gloom.&nbsp;

According to Nic Newman of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, "We're already seeing criticism of the... blanket coverage."&nbsp;

Outside of the UK, this is considerably more true. We have all been taken aback by how interested the foreign media has remained in the issue over time, he said.

When the queen's passing was announced, television stations all across the world reported high viewing numbers.&nbsp;

According to the specialised portal Visibrain, between Thursday and Tuesday, there were a record 46.1 million tweets about the topic. But as the coverage goes on, the competing opinions become more audible.&nbsp;

Many social media users bemoaned the fact that the news effectively pushed all other issues off the table.

Reporters Without Borders, often known by its French acronym RSF said in a report that unregulated online content has helped spread disinformation and propaganda that have in turn led to widening of political divisions and even caused international tension contributing to Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The media watchdog presented its findings in the 2022 edition of its annual World Press Freedom Index

The report said that democratic societies are increasingly being fractured by disinformation spreading social media while mainstream media pursues a "Fox News model". This is a reference to US right-wing television network.

The report noted that autocratic regimes were tightening control on information within their societies. This leverage, is in turn used to wage "propaganda wars" against democracies and fuel divisions within them.

Such polarisation is becoming more "extreme," worldwide, RSF's director of operations and campaigns Rebecca Vincent told a news conference in London.

Vincent pointed to deaths of journalists in Netherlands, Greece and also mentioned case of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange who is facing an extradition and trial in US for publication of millions of secret documents.

The report showed how Russia, where state-run media overwhelmingly dominates and independent outlets are largely stifled, waged a propaganda war before its invasion of Ukraine.

Evgeniya Dillendorf, a correspondent for the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper, said the main reason for lack of media diversity in Russia "is not pressure but lack of independent business which would finance it, and the lack of independent judicial system that would defend it".

Novaya Gazeta has suspended publication for the duration of Moscow's military intervention to avoid being shut down.

"The creation of media weaponry in authoritarian countries eliminates their citizens' right to information but is also linked to the rise in international tension, which can lead to the worst kind of wars," RSF Secretary-General Christophe Deloire said.

The "Fox News-isation" of Western media also posed a "fatal danger for democracies because it undermines the basis of civil harmony and tolerant public debate", he added.

It's a fact as to how some issues garner more attention than others. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been one such issue. From revolving around all Covid-related stories for the past two years to now focussing on every small development in Ukraine - this is how media attention shifted in a span of two weeks. &nbsp;

Russia invaded Ukraine in the early hours of February 24, leading to one of the worst conflicts in Europe. As the world was busy focussing on the atrocities in Ukraine, World Health Organisation's director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the pandemic is 'far from over,' as global Covid deaths crossed the 6 million mark.&nbsp;

The first outbreak in Pacific islands&nbsp;
Two years on, several Pacific islands are experiencing their first outbreak. Earlier this week, Niue became the second island in the Pacific to lose its Covid-zero status after reporting its first case of Covid. As per the government, the case arrived from New Zealand. Chatham islands also reported its first case over the weekend.

As per WHO, there are just eight countries that are Covid-free. These include Tuvalu, Tokelau, Saint Helena, Pitcairn Islands, Nauru, and the Federated states of Micronesia. The disease has ripped nations all across the globe.

Situation in China seems to get worse&nbsp;
As Russia continued to bomb Ukraine, killing hundreds of people, many were losing lives due to this one disease which has severely impacted the nation.&nbsp;

The situation in China seems to be deteriorating again, this time even worse than the Wuhan outbreak in 2020. The nation has reported 1,524 Covid cases, its highest daily figure since 2020. Meanwhile, a lockdown has been imposed in the northeastern Chinese city of nine million people Changchun as Covid cases continue to surge. Changchun is the capital of Jilin province and an important industrial base. It has ordered the residents to work from home.&nbsp;As per the new rules, only one person will be allowed out every two days to buy "daily necessities."

The health commission said that China will be introducing rapid antigen tests for the first time as Covid outbreaks spread.&nbsp;

Several Chinese cities have been recording a surge in cases. Recently, Shanghai ordered its schools to close and shift to online instruction. The asymptomatic infections caused by the Omicron variant have driven Beijing's daily count to an all-time high.&nbsp;

Temporary bridge in Hong Kong&nbsp;
Hong Kong, the densely populated metropolis is in the throes of a record virus surge. As the situation worsens, a temporary bridge has been built in Hong Kong to help bring in material from the mainland for the Covid makeshift hospital.&nbsp;Chief Executive Carrie Lam said that China aims to ensure that Hong Kong has enough food and other supplies during the outbreak.&nbsp;

To battle the surge in cases, doctors and nurses from the mainland have also been allowed to work in the city. Beijing, on the other hand, has provided 29 million&nbsp;rapid antigen tests and 54 million&nbsp;masks as of Tuesday.

Earlier, Lam had said that all Hong Kongers must undergo three rounds of compulsory coronavirus testing. "The coming one to three months are crucial in fighting the pandemic," Lam told a press briefing.

France sees an upward trend&nbsp;

France, also, is experiencing a surge in cases as it prepares to lift most Covid restrictions. After weeks of steady decline, Covid infections are going up again, according to the public health body, Santé Publique France.&nbsp;
On Friday, France recorded 73,000 fresh cases.&nbsp;

Guillaume Rozier, founder of the government-sponsored website CovidTracker, while speaking to AFP said, "The rise in cases is most apparent in northern France and along the Mediterranean coast, roughly corresponding to the areas where children returned to school earliest (on February 21)."

Cases in the UK rising again&nbsp;
While several European nations have eased restrictions, the situation in the United Kingdom seems to be getting a little out of control. Experts have warned that there can be a resurgence of the virus as cases among older people are increasing. The warning came after nearly 100,000 swabs were collected from people all across England.&nbsp;

Latest estimates from the Office for national statistics (ONS) have revealed that Covid infections are increasing across the UK as every one person in 25 is infected. Sub-variant of Omicron, called BA.2, is believed to be the most common strain in most of the UK.

WHO voiced its frustration
While countries are trying to move on from the pandemic, WHO recently voiced its frustration at people marking the second anniversary. It insisted that the real alarm came six weeks earlier. However, few people just bothered to sit up and take notice.

WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern, meaning the highest level of alarm in the global health regulations on January 30, 2020. This was done when outside of China, fewer than 100 cases and no deaths had been reported.

WHO chief Tedros, however, described the worsening situation as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. The WHO is not marking the anniversary and is still frustrated at the fact that governments did not heed the original alert.

"The world was possessed with the word pandemic," said WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan.

"The warning in January was way more important than the announcement in March. Do you want the warning to say you've just drowned, or would you like the warning to say the flood is coming?"

Slowly but surely governments have come around to the idea that Covid may be endemic like the flu and have asked people to live with it. WHO, however, is warning against such a conclusion.

After&nbsp;10&nbsp;years&nbsp;in&nbsp;prison&nbsp;for "insulting Islam,"&nbsp;Saudi&nbsp;blogger&nbsp;and human rights activist&nbsp;Raif&nbsp;Badawi, who has become a symbol of freedom of expression around the world, was&nbsp;released&nbsp;on Friday.

"Raif&nbsp;called me. He is free," his wife Ensaf Haidar, who lives in Canada with their three children and had been fiercely advocating for his release, told AFP.&nbsp;

Badawi's release was also confirmed by a&nbsp;Saudi&nbsp;security official, who said on condition of anonymity that "he was&nbsp;released&nbsp;today."

"I jumped when I found out. I couldn't believe it. I can't wait to see my dad, I'm so excited," one of his daughters, Nawja&nbsp;Badawi, 18, told AFP.

The winner of the Reporters Without Borders prize for press freedom was arrested and detained in&nbsp;Saudi&nbsp;Arabia in 2012 on charges of "insulting Islam."&nbsp;

At the end of 2014,&nbsp;Badawi, now 38, was sentenced to&nbsp;10&nbsp;years&nbsp;in&nbsp;prison&nbsp;and 50 lashes a week for twenty weeks.

His first flogging in Jeddah square in&nbsp;Saudi&nbsp;Arabia shocked the world and was described by the United Nations as "cruel and inhuman."&nbsp;After&nbsp;the outcry, he was not lashed again.

"Raif&nbsp;Badawi, human rights defender in&nbsp;Saudi&nbsp;Arabia, has finally been&nbsp;released!" Amnesty International tweeted.

Colette Lelievre, a Montreal-based campaign organizer with Amnesty who has worked on&nbsp;Badawi's case, said his release was "a great relief."

"Raif called me. He is free," his wife Ensaf Haidar, who lives in Canada with their three children and had been fiercely advocating for his release, told AFP. Badawi's release was also confirmed by a Saudi security official, who said on condition of anonymity that "he was released today." "I jumped when I found out. I couldn't believe it. I can't wait to see my dad, I'm so excited," one of his daughters, Nawja Badawi, 18, told AFP. If media reports from the US are to be believed, the Biden administration allegedly paid nearly the entire corporate media a total of around $1 billion as part of a huge campaign to push only positive coverage about Covid vaccines. &nbsp;

It said documents gathered through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by Blaze Media showed that the government purchased advertising on TV, radio, in print, and on social media to build “vaccine confidence.” &nbsp;
