The Congress is currently the single largest party in the state with 14 MLAs while the BJP has 13 in the 40-member Goa assembly. The Goa Forward Party, MGP and Independents have three MLAs each while NCP has one legislator.

The strength House has been reduced to 36 due to demise of BJP MLA Francis D'Souza earlier this year, and Parrikar on Sunday, and resignations of two Congress MLAs Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte last year.

Condolences pour in after the sad demise of Goa CM Manohar Parrikar

Manohar Parrikar, who rose from a&nbsp;Pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to become the country's Defence Minister and also chief minister of Goa, enjoyed a man-next-door image in the politically-volatile coastal state of Goa.

Parrikar, 63, served the state three times as chief minister and had a three-year-long stint as Defence Minister in the Narendra Modi-led cabinet.

He was a leader who enjoyed acceptance from all sections of the BJP and beyond. He played a key role in making the BJP a force to reckon with in Goa, which remained for long a Congress bastion, with regional outfits having pockets of influence.

Born on December 13, 1955 into a middle-class family in Mapusa, his political career began as an RSS pracharak and he continued working for the Sangh even after graduating from IIT-Bombay as a metallurgical engineer.

Parrikar never shied away from displaying his affiliation to the Sangh and was even photographed participating in the annual 'Sanchalan' organised by the RSS in the uniform and wielding lathi.

He became an MLA in 1994 and was the Leader of Opposition in the Goa Assembly from June to November 1999.

He was the first alumni of one of the top engineering institutes of India to become an MLA.&nbsp;

He became chief minister of Goa for the first time on October 24, 2000, but his tenure lasted only until February 27, 2002. On June 5, 2002, he was re-elected and served another term as chief minister. 
On January 29, 2005, his government was reduced to a minority in the assembly after four BJP MLAs resigned from the House.

Pratapsinh Rane of the Congress subsequently replaced Parrikar as chief minister. In 2007, the Parrikar-led BJP was defeated by the Congress-led by Digambar Kamat.

But the year 2012 saw Parrikar riding a popularity wave in the state when he took his party to the historic number of 21 out of 40 seats in the assembly.

He went on to become the chief minister again. BJP continued its victory mark in the year 2014 when the party won both the Lok Sabha seats.

After the Modi-led Cabinet was sworn at the Centre, Parrikar was offered a ministerial berth in November 2014. He remained in the union cabinet till 2017 when his party failed to garner a majority in the Goa legislative assembly polls.

When he was the Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar prefered to use once ubiquitous ambassador car in Delhi in the era of SUVs. Parrikar also felt "jittery" when surrounded by security personnel who are part of his entourage.&nbsp;

Recounting his days as Goa chief minister, Parrikar had then said he preferred&nbsp;to stay simple by choice.&nbsp;

"Even after becoming Defence minister, I travel in an ambassador (car) in New Delhi whose doors get jammed from time to time and even the car breaks down thrice a day. But, simplicity is my comfort and I prefer to remain simple by choice. I get jittery when there are policemen surrounding me (for security)," the minister had said.&nbsp;

Manohar Parrikar extremely critical: Goa CMO

The ruling BJP has asked all its MLAs not to leave Goa against the backdrop of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/goa-cm-manohar-parrikars-health-has-deteriorated-but-he-is-stable-vijai-sardesai-203759">deteriorating health</a> and Congress staking a claim to form a government in the state.&nbsp;

Goa BJP general secretary Sadanand Tanawade told ANI that all the party's legislators were asked not to leave Goa at a meeting held on Saturday.&nbsp;

After Congress dispatched a letter to Governor Mridula Sinha, BJP called for an "emergency meeting" at the party's headquarters in Panaji. A meeting of BJP MLAs is also scheduled for today at the party`s Panaji office, state Power Minister Nilesh Cabral on Saturday. A number of news reports said Sunday that the BJP is looking for alternatives to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.&nbsp;

The Goa Congress on Saturday urged the governor to dismiss the BJP-led coalition government and invite the party to form a government in the state. In a letter to the governor, Leader of the Opposition in the Goa Assembly, Chandrakant Kavlekar, claimed that the Congress party has the majority to form the government and that "the numbers of the BJP may further dwindle" in the Assembly.&nbsp;

"Consequent upon the sad demise of BJP MLA Francis D`Souza, the BJP government led by Manohar Parrikar, which has long lost the trust of people, has also lost the strength of the House," Chandrakant said in his letter to the Governor.&nbsp;

Former Deputy Chief Minister Francis D`Souza died last month after a prolonged battle with cancer.&nbsp;

Stating that Parrikar is "very ill", Deputy Speaker and Calangute BJP MLA Michael Lobo on Saturday said, "There are no chances of him getting well.&nbsp;

After Congress stakes claim to form government, BJP MLAs asked not to leave Goa

Goa minister Vijai Sardesai on Saturday met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and said his health had "deteriorated", but he was "stable".

Sardesai, along with five Goa MLAs, met Parrikar at his private residence.

The MLAs, all allies in the BJP-led government, are Goa Forward Party's Jayesh Salgaonkar and Vinod Palyekar and Independents Rohan Khaunte, Govind Gawade and Prasad Gaonkar.

Emerging from Parrikar's private residence at Dona Paula, Sardesai told reporters, "The CMs health has deteriorated, but he is stable."

"When cancer was detected and the CM showed willingness to step down, at that time we had asked for a permanent solution and stability. Today, his health has deteriorated, but we are with him. He is stable. I don't know what exactly is his stage (of ailment)," he said.

"He is not on life support. I don't know what medical term we can use for it. The chief minister's office has said he is stable, so we will take it that he is stable," Sardesai said.

They also ruled out the possibility of any new political formations in the state in the wake of Parrikar's health condition.

"Where is the question of a new formation? We have a chief minister and there is no question of forming anything new," Sardesai asserted.

"We (group of six MLAs and BJP) are together. Whether time has come for a new leader for the BJP legislature party is for them (BJP) to decide. We have been with Parrikar unequivocally, we are with him now as a CM," he added.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is currently admitted at AIIMS in Delhi, is “very unwell” and is “living” with God’s blessings, Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly Michael Lobo said Monday.&nbsp;

Lobo told reporters that the day Parrikar steps down as chief minister, or “something happens to him”, Goa will plunge into a political crisis.

Parrikar, 63, who is suffering from a pancreatic ailment, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on January 31. He has been in and out of hospitals in Delhi, New York, Mumbai and Goa since last year.&nbsp;

“The ailment he has got has no cure. There will be no political crisis till Manohar Parrikar is in the chair. But the day he steps down on his health ground or something happens to him, there will be a political crisis. He is very unwell,” said Lobo, who is a senior BJP leader and represents Calangute Assembly constituency.

“He is still living and working with God’s blessings,” he added. Parrikar heads a coalition government, which is supported by the Goa Forward Party (GFP), the Maharashravadi Gomantak Party (MGP), and three Independent MLAs. Sources at the AIIMS Saturday said Parrikar’s condition was stable. Veteran BJP leader L K Advani, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Army Chief General Bipin Rawat had met the ailing chief minister in Goa earlier to inquire about his health.

Earlier in the day, on the occasion of the World Cancer Day, Parrikar said in a message that the human mind can overcome any disease.&nbsp;

Manohar Parrikar ‘very unwell’, living with God’s blessings: Goa deputy speaker

The condition of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is admitted to AIIMS in Delhi for a routine check up, is stable, sources at the hospital said Saturday.

The former defence minister who is suffering from a pancreatic ailment was admitted to the hospital on Thursday evening for a routine check up.

"His condition is stable," a source said.

He is admitted at the Institute Rotary Cancer hospital at AIIMS under the observation of oncologist Atul Sharma.

Parrikar was diagnosed with a pancreatic ailment in February last year. Since then he has been admitted to hospitals in Delhi, New York, Mumbai and Goa.&nbsp;
