Mahsa Amini's father was briefly detained by security forces in Iran on Saturday (September 16) and was released after being warned against marking the anniversary of Amini's death, said a human rights group.

"Security forces detained Amjad Amini today and returned him to his house after threatening him against marking his daughter's death anniversary," the Kurdistan Human Rights network said.

State-affiliated media reported arrests of several "counter-revolutionaries" and "terrorists" in different Iranian cities and stated that security forces had thwarted plots to create disruptions around illegal protests.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, died in the custody of the country's morality police on September 16, 2023, for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women in place since the 1979 revolution.

Her family contends she died from a head injury in police custody.

Earlier this week, Amjad Amini, Mahsa's father, had released a statement announcing plans to hold a commemoration for his daughter in their hometown of Saqez in western Iran.&nbsp;

One of Amini's uncles, Safa Aeli, was also detained in Saqez.

As per human rights groups, on Saturday (September 16), the first death anniversary of Amini, a massive security force presence was deployed in Iran's mostly Kurdish areas in anticipation of unrest.

According to news agency Reuters, footage on social media showed apparent protests in areas including Gohardasht, a neighbourhood of the city of Karaj west of the capital Tehran, and in the northeastern city of Mashhad.

Widespread strikes were reported in multiple cities in Iran's Kurdistan region.

However, IRNA said Amini's hometown of Saqez was "completely quiet" and that calls for strike in Kurdish areas had failed due to "people's vigilance and the presence of security and military forces".

It quoted an official in the Kurdistan province as saying: "A number of agents affiliated with counter-revolutionary groups who had planned to create chaos and prepare media fodder were arrested in the early hours of this morning."

<h2>Biden hails protesters</h2>

US President Joe Biden, on Friday (September 15), said that the United States would remain committed to supporting Iranians, a year after Mahsa Amini's death triggered massive demonstrations, as Washington revealed fresh sanctions against "egregious" rights abusers.

Biden released a statement saying, "Today—as we remember Mahsa’s tragic death—we reaffirm our commitment to the courageous people of Iran who are carrying on her mission. They are inspiring the world with their resilience and resolve. And together with our allies and partners, we stand with them."

"Iranians alone will determine the fate of their country, but, the United States remains committed to standing with them, including providing tools to support Iranians' ability to advocate for their own future," he added.

An Iranian man died by suicide in France's southeastern city of Lyon on Tuesday. The man took the step&nbsp;after announcing on social media that he was going to kill himself to ensure that the world pays attention to the reported crackdown on women protesters in Iran.&nbsp; Mohammad Moradi, 38, was found in the Rhone river that flows through the centre of Lyon late on Monday, an anonymous police source was quoted as saying by the news agency AFP. The police source further told AFP that the emergency services made an immediate intervention but were unable to revive him on the river bank.&nbsp; 
 
Moradi had posted a video on Instagram saying he was about to drown himself to highlight the crackdown on protesters in Iran that began after the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Al-Amini after she reportedly violated the prescribed dress code for women in the country.

A small rally in Moradi's remembrance also took place on the banks of Rhone.&nbsp;Mourners placed candles and wreaths on the riverside railings.

"Mohammad Moradi killed himself to make the voice of revolution heard in Iran. Our voice is not carried by Western media,"&nbsp;Timothee Amini of the local Iranian community told AFP.&nbsp;

'His heart was beating for Iran'

Moradi was reportedly a history undergraduate and worked in a restaurant.&nbsp;He lived in Lyon with his wife for three years.

"His heart was beating for Iran, he could no longer bear the regime,"&nbsp;said Amini.

Protests have gripped Iran for over three months.

The Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights (IHR) said on Tuesday that 476 protesters have been killed in the violent crackdown with at least 100 Iranians facing execution over the protests. So far, two young men have already been executed.

Hardline Iranian lawmakers on Sunday (November 6) urged the country's judiciary to "deal decisively" with those behind the unrest and protests. The demand has come amid the Islamic Republic's failing efforts to suppress the show of dissent which is turning out to be the biggest in years.

Iran is witnessing countrywide protests after the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September this year. She was detained by Iran's morality police for 'inappropriate attire'.

"We ask the judiciary to deal decisively with the perpetrators of these crimes and with all those who assisted in the crimes and provoked rioters," said a statement of 227 lawmakers from Iran's 290-seat, hardline-led parliament, according to state media.

The activist HRANA news agency said that 318 protesters had been killed in the unrest as of Saturday, including 49 minors. It added that 38 members of the security forces had also been killed.

Iran's state media had last month claimed that more than 46 security personnel, including the police, had been killed.&nbsp;Government officials have not provided an estimate of any wider death count.

Iranian leaders have vowed tough action against protesters whom they have described as rioters, blaming enemies including the United States for fomenting the unrest.

Demonstrations continued in many cities on Sunday, from Tehran to central city of Yazd and northern city of Rasht, according to rights groups and videos on social media.

Reuters said it could not verify the rights groups' reports independently, or the social media posts and footage.

Iran lawmakers urge severe punishment for 'rioters'

The European Union (EU) on Monday imposed sanctions on Iran’s Morality police, information minister and other senior officials in the wake of crackdown against the weeks-long protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death.

Earlier in the day, EU foreign ministers met to blacklist three more entities, apart from the Morality Police under whose custody the 22-year-old woman died on September 16 after she was detained for violating the Islamic dress code for women. &nbsp;

The entities that have been backlisted include the chiefs of the so-called morality police, the Revolutionary Guard's Basij paramilitary force, and a uniformed branch of the national&nbsp;police.

Under the sanctions, these Iranian officials will be subjected to EU visa bans and asset freezes.

Last week, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen warned that "now is the time to sanction those responsible" in Iran "for the repression of women".

The US, Britain and Canada have already announced sanctions on Iran.

Meanwhile, Iran has vowed to take an "immediate" response against the EU’s sanctions.

Foreign ministry spokesman Naser Kanani said that the Tehran regime will "decide and act immediately in accordance with the decisions and actions" taken by EU member countries.

Earlier, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi had slammed United States President Joe Biden for his expressing support to the protests and accused him of “inciting chaos”.

“The remarks of the American president – who is inciting chaos, terror and the destruction of another country – serve as a reminder of the eternal words of the founder of the Islamic Republic who called America&nbsp;the Great Satan,” Raisi said, referring to the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomenei.

Her death led to massive protests in Iran and abroad too. Now, the protests have stretched into the third week.&nbsp;

IHR, an organisation based in Oslo, reported citing local sources that 41 additional people died in clashes on Friday in the far southeast, an area bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan.&nbsp;

It also claimed that the allegations that a local police commander had sexually assaulted a teenage member of the Baluch Sunni minority had spurred those protests.&nbsp;

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of IHR, asked the international community to take swift action against the Islamic Republic to stop the killing of Iranian protesters. The group called such acts "crimes against humanity."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, state media reported that the Iranian security forces battled with students at a renowned university in Tehran on Sunday.&nbsp;

Sharif University, historically a hub of resistance, was reportedly surrounded by dozens of riot police in numerous videos provided by the activist Twitter account 1500tasvir, which has about 160,000 followers.&nbsp;

In one of the videos, security personnel was seen pelting students with tear gas while distant gunfire could be heard in the background.&nbsp;

Security personnel could be seen pursuing scores of students who were stranded in the university's underground parking in another video. According to the report, many pupils had been detained.&nbsp;

However, there isn't any official verification of what reportedly happened at the university.&nbsp;
