The government of Iran has lost the trust of its people, who are facing several crises including the Covid pandemic, economic turmoil and water and power shortages, former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday.

“Right now, both the economic situation and social situation are dire. Relations with neighbours, and international relations are facing serious challenges. Above all is the distrust of the public,” he said in an interview to WION’s Executive Editor Palki Sharma when asked about challenges that Iranian leadership faces.

Pressed on about who exactly the public distrusted, he said, “the people do not trust the managers and decision makers.”

Iran is undergoing several mass protests over water and power shortages. Police firing at protesters had led to deaths in July.

Ahmadinejad was one of the contenders for this year’s presidential election but he was barred from contesting by the top clerical vetting body, the Guardian Council.

On the current crises such as water and power shortages, he said, “the most important thing is the restoration of the national trust."

Iran is one of the worst-affected countries in West Asia in the ongoing Covid pandemic.

Asked if the government had done enough in minimising the damage, Ahmadinejad said, “Unfortunately, the government’s management of the pandemic has been very very bad, and today we have public disaffection because of this. Besides, the weak management has damaged Iran’s economy.”

Pakistan needs to join this cooperation of Iran and India in resolving the issue, Ahmadinejad&nbsp;said, “because it is seriously being threatened.”

"What I mean is the sovereignty and the government of Pakistan ... is soon going to be threatened by the Taliban's current movement."

Fighting and withstanding terrorism is not a matter of war, he said, but&nbsp;a matter of cooperation and correlation between states. Terrorism is a political issue and if we suppose that it's a military one, then we would definitely face problems in resolving these issues.

“So Iran, India and others should come together and make plans to resolve this in the framework of political and humane issues.”

Ahmedinejad said the root cause of this jihadi group goes back to when the Ex-Soviet Union was dominating Afghanistan. At that time the US started training and preparing these terrorist groups in Pakistan in order to withstand the Communist Government's threats. This trend later on continued, he said.

Former Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday submitted application for his candidacy to succeed incumbent President Hassan Rouhani. Elections are due in Iran next month. The 64-year-old populist was applauded by several dozen supporters as he arrived at the interior ministry to submit his application.

"Millions of people across the country have invited me to stand for election, and even ordered me to come here to register, placing a heavy responsibility on my shoulders," Ahmadinejad said.

The build-up to June 18 polls comes as Iran and world powers wrangle over reviving a 2015 nuclear accord, from which the US withdrew unilaterally in 2018, reimposing crippling sanctions.&nbsp;

Former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, rumoured to be planning a political comeback, has asked Barack Obama to return $2 billion of assets frozen in the US in a letter made public today. 
 
Ahmadinejad wrote that despite early promises by the US president to improve ties with Iran &quot;the same hostile policies along with the same trend of enmity were pursued&quot;. 
 
He specifically mentioned the $2 billion of Iranian foreign currency reserves seized from New York bank accounts earlier this year. 
 
In April, the US Supreme Court confirmed an earlier ruling that the money should be used to compensate the families of victims of the 1983 bombing of a US Marines barracks in Lebanon and other incidents blamed on Iran. 
 
Iran is appealing the decision at the International Court of Justice.
