Eight Israeli soldiers killed in Lebanon as clashes with Hezbollah intensify

Day after Iran launched around 200 missiles at Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Tehran had made a “big mistake” and “will pay,” for it, amid fears of an all-out war in the region. In other news, Russia may have used the 'father of all bombs', ODAB-9000, on Ukraine during a recent attack on the Ukrainian town of Vovchansk. It falls under the category of 'thermobaric' weapons that can create a wave of blasts by using oxygen from the air.

Israel-Hezbollah Conflict: IDF Announces First Combat Death Since Ground Operations In Lebanon

Danish police said on Wednesday they were investigating two explosions in the immediate vicinity of Israel's Copenhagen embassy and had detained three people for questioning.

Two people were apprehended on a train at Copenhagen's main railway station, while the third was detained elsewhere in the Danish capital, police said on social media platform X.

It was not immediately clear how those held by police were linked to the blasts.

There were no injuries in the explosions, which happened at around 3:20 am local time (0120 GMT), and no damage was caused to the building, the Israeli embassy said in a statement.

"It is clear that the Israeli embassy is in the immediate vicinity, and that is naturally also an angle that we look at," Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jakob Hansen of the Copenhagen police told reporters.

The area around the embassy was cordoned off, and armed Danish military personnel stood guard, while investigators wearing coverall suits were seen combing the scene for evidence.

Police were due to hold a press conference at 1200 GMT.

The blasts occurred against a backdrop of soaring tensions in the Middle East as Iran carried out a massive missile attack on Israel.

Israel, which is fighting Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, promised to retaliate, stoking fears of a wider war.

Carolineskolen, a Jewish school located near the embassy in the Danish capital, would stay closed on Wednesday due to its proximity to the crime scene, a spokesperson for the Jewish Community in Denmark told Reuters.

In January, a Stockholm police bomb squad disarmed what investigators called a "dangerous object" outside the Israeli embassy building.

Iran did succeed in striking airbases during missile attack, says Israel

Israel Defense Forces (IDF), on Wednesday (Oct 2) said it had sent more troops into Lebanon after the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group claimed its fighters clashed with the Israeli military in a border village.

The size of Israeli military units is classified, but a division typically consists of at least 10,000 troops. The announcement to send such a large number of troops comes despite Israel's claims that its operation in Lebanon is "limited, localized, targeted” –  a description it repeated on today.

At least five Israeli airstrikes targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs early Wednesday, a Lebanese security source confirmed, as reported by France 24. The strikes were reportedly aimed at Hezbollah sites, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. Smoke was seen rising over the area as a result of the strikes, which occurred amid increasing military actions in the region.

Israel begins 'localised and targeted' ground operation in Lebanon, days after Hezbollah chief's death

Three rockets were fired at a base housing US troops at Baghdad International Airport in Iraq on Tuesday (oct 1), causing no casualties, two security sources told AFP.

Three rockets were fired at a base housing US troops at Baghdad International Airport in Iraq on Tuesday (oct 1), causing no casualties, two security sources told AFP. "The Victory Base at Baghdad Airport was targeted with three rockets, two of which were shot down by the base's special defences, while the third fell near the headquarters of the Counter Terrorism Service Command," a security source said. A second security source confirmed the report, noting that there were no casualties and that the rockets did not affect air traffic. The attack comes as the war in Gaza and Israeli strikes and ground raids in Lebanon threaten to spill over into a regional conflict. Since the outbreak of war in Gaza on October 7, militant factions have targeted bases in Iraq and Syria housing US troops over Washington's military support for Israel. Washington has repeatedly responded with airstrikes on faction headquarters in both countries. The United States has about 2,500 troops in Iraq and about 900 in neighbouring Syria as part of the coalition it established in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group. The coalition also includes forces from other countries, including Britain and France. Armed Iraqi factions loyal to Iran demanded the withdrawal of those troops. Watch | US calls in Iraq to safeguard its troops amid new attacks × Washington and Baghdad announced Friday that the international coalition would end its decade-long military mission in Iraq within a year. But the joint statement and US officials did not say how many US troops would remain in Iraq. After a decline in militant attacks in recent months, rockets were fired in August at the Ain al-Assad base in western Iraq, injuring seven Americans. And in September, Washington said the US diplomatic complex in Baghdad was attacked by Iran-aligned militias operating in Iraq. Body of Hezbollah chief Nasrallah recovered from site of Israeli air attack in Lebanon: Report

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, on Sunday (Sep 29), said that the killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Deputy Commander Brig General Abbas Nilforoushan in Lebanon by Israel in airstrikes "will not go unanswered".

Nilforoushan, the deputy commander of IRGC operations, was killed on Friday (Sep 27) in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, that also eliminated Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.

In 2022, Nilforoushan faced sanctions by the United States and the US said that he was “directly in charge of protest suppression” amid demonstrations in Iran over the death of Mahsa Amini following her arrest for allegedly not wearing her headscarf to the liking of police.

The IRCG released a statement on Saturday, describing him as the Revolutionary Guards' “military adviser in Lebanon.”
