Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Friday (Sep 27) said they had targeted Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in a strike on the militant organisation's central headquarters in Beirut. However, the IDF has not confirmed whether Nasrallah was hit in the strikes.

"Hezbollah's central headquarters was intentionally built under residential buildings in the heart of the Dahiyeh in Beirut as part of Hezbollah's strategy of using Lebanese people as human shields," IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari stated in an evening address.

Lebanon's health ministry said two people were killed and 76 wounded in the strikes.

"The successive Israeli enemy strikes on Haret Hreik in Beirut's southern suburbs, in a preliminary toll, killed two people and wounded 76, including... 15 that required hospitalisation," a ministry statement said.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said four buildings had been destroyed in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital. Later, news agency AFP quoted a Hezbollah source as saying that at least six buildings were flattened in the attack.

Hassan Nasrallah is dead. The Hezbollah chief's death has now been confirmed by the Iran-backed, Lebanon-based group. Israel-Hezbollah war | Nasrallah's Assassination: US Says No Advance Warning About The Strike

Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah on Saturday (Sep 28) confirmed that its leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed on Friday in Israeli strikes on Beirut. Nasrallah’s death has now raised questions about the future leadership of the Lebanon-based militant group. Now, it’s being speculated that Nasrallah’s cousin Hashem Safieddine may take the reins of the group, who has already been on the Hezbollah’s Jihad Council. Let’s know more about the prominent cleric of the militant group.

Who is Hashem Safieddine?

Hashem Safieddine has been involved for years in Hezbollah’s political affairs. He was also considered very close to now-dead former Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, whose daughter had married Safieddine’s son back in 2020.

Hashem Safieddine joined the group in 1994 and joined the Majlis Al Shura, the group’s highest decision-making body, within a year.

He is known for his black turban and as someone who touts himself as a close descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.

Safieddine is considered one of the top three leaders of the group, alongside Nasrallah and Naim Qassem.

Designated as terrorist by US in 2018

The US State Department had designated Hashem Safieddine as a terrorist in 2017 for his alleged involvement in Hezbollah’s strategic planning and financial operations for over three decades.

Since he is well-versed in the group’s functioning and has been closely associated with the group for the last 30 years, he is considered as the best choice for Hezbollah’s next leader.

Hezbollah Chief Nasrallah Killed In Israeli Strikes | Israel-Hezbollah War

Israelis rejoiced Saturday at the news that Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah had been killed while also offering mixed takes on whether this would make them safer in the long term.

Military officials announced on Saturday morning that Nasrallah, who headed Hezbollah for more than three decades, died in a Friday strike targeting the group's headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Even before Hezbollah officially confirmed his death on Saturday afternoon, Israelis on Tel Aviv's waterfront promenade said the news came as a welcome relief amid escalating clashes along the Israel-Lebanon border.

"Absolutely fantastic news, it should have been done a long time ago," said David Shalev, a resident of Israel's commercial hub.

Although he cast doubt on whether Nasrallah's killing would end the fighting in the north, he said it sent a clear message to Israel's foes in the region: "Don't screw with us."

Hezbollah began firing into northern Israel one day after Hamas's unprecedented attack on southern Israel last October 7 triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.

In recent days Israel has shifted the focus of its operations towards eliminating Hezbollah's military leadership and "cleaning" the northern border, from which more than 60,000 Israelis have been displaced for nearly a year.

The escalation brought heightened security risks to central Israel, with Hezbollah on Wednesday announcing it had launched a ballistic missile targeting the Israeli spy agency Mossad's headquarters near Tel Aviv.

In the coastal city of Rishon LeZion in central Israel, Shuli Diaz on Saturday called Friday's strike on Nasrallah "an amazing move".

She said she hoped the Hezbollah leader's death would bring peace after more than a year of war triggered by the October 7 attack.
