Google Maps renames Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’ for US users after Trump order

US President Donald Trump has taken his campaign to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America a step further, sharing an AI-generated video showing an army of armed, blond-haired “Donald Ducks” guarding the lake’s shoreline. The 34-second clip, posted by Trump on Saturday (Aug 29), shows Canada geese with human arms, assault rifles and hairstyles resembling the president’s distinctive blond hair. Set to the theme from Hawaii Five-O, the birds march along the waterfront before firing into the air as fireworks light up a skyline resembling Toronto.Trump posted another AI-generated clip depicting him replacing a “Welcome to Lake Ontario” sign with one reading “Welcome to Lake America”. The video ends with Trump dancing to the Village People’s “YMCA.”

Trump doubles down on Lake America
The posts followed Trump’s executive order directing US federal agencies to use the name “Lake America” for Lake Ontario in official documents.“We’re gonna make a little change; we’re gonna call it something different than Lake Ontario,” Trump said earlier this week while announcing the proposal.Trump had already used a Sharpie in a social media video to mark the lake on a map.

Canada rejects renaming effort
The move has drawn a sharp response from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who defended the lake’s historic name.“The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,’” Carney wrote on X. “The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.”“We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms,” he added. “Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.”
Tensions rise amid tariff war
The unusual naming dispute comes as relations between Washington and Ottawa soured over trade and Trump’s repeated suggestion that Canada could become the 51st US state. On August 22, Washington imposed 50 per cent tariffs on around $20 billion of Canadian exports after trade talks collapsed. Canada responded with tariffs of up to 50 per cent on selected US goods. The escalating dispute has also triggered personal attacks, with Trump calling Ontario Premier Doug Ford a “flunky”. Ford hit back, branding Trump a “dictator” and “bully” and telling him to “kiss my a**.”

Donald Trump has mastered the politics of attention. Give him a controversy, a camera and a social-media account, and he can turn almost anything into a Trump headline. Now, even Lake Ontario has become part of the brand. Trump has formally ordered the US government to rename it Lake America, despite Canada making clear it will continue calling it Lake Ontario. The move comes amid an escalating trade fight with Ottawa. But here is the uncomfortable question: Is this governing, or marketing? Because Americans are not standing in grocery aisles wondering what the next landmark will be called. They are wondering why everything costs so much. They want affordability. They want stability. They want results. Instead, they are getting a presidency increasingly consumed by personal branding, confrontation and spectacle. Look at the Kennedy Center. Trump’s name has been placed at the center of another political and cultural battle, while fresh reporting suggests the institution’s finances deteriorated sharply following the takeover and name change. And that is the danger of making yourself the story. When every institution becomes a battlefield and every disagreement becomes personal, the presidency risks becoming less about governing and more about maintaining the Trump brand.

Yes, pandering works. It can energize a base. It can dominate the news cycle. It can turn frustration into political loyalty. But eventually, voters ask a more brutal question: What did all that noise actually deliver? And perhaps the clearest warning sign is coming from Corporate America. Companies that once cozied up to Trump are now cultivating relationships with Democrats ahead of the midterms, preparing for the possibility of a Democratic-controlled House, and the investigations and subpoenas that could follow. That is not necessarily ideological conversion. It is political insurance. And when corporate America starts hedging its bets, it suggests even Trump's most powerful allies understand that political power can change very quickly. So, Mr President, the question is no longer whether you can command attention. You clearly can. The question is whether attention is enough. Because America does not need a president who is constantly marketing himself. It needs a president who can make life better for the people being marketed to. The midterms may provide the answer. The brand is Trump. But the bill is America's. Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Nor does WION or ZMCL endorse the views of the writer.

Trump turns Lake Ontario into ‘Lake America’ as critics question whether his presidency is more about branding, controversy and spectacle than results

The Verdict: When the president becomes the brand

President Trump has signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America," effective immediately — at least on US maps. The move comes as a trade war with Canada escalates, with 50% tariffs now hitting $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after talks collapsed. Signing the order beside a map with "Lake America" in bold red letters, Trump called Canada "the worst" to deal with on trade. Canada has already said it won't recognise the new name — echoing his 2025 renaming of the Gulf of Mexico.

"We know that America is changing," Carney said in a post on X. “Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario - then, now and always.”

Trump had floated the idea earlier this week before confirming the change in a video posted on TikTok.During Thursday's event, he also appeared to joke about going even further. "We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean," Trump said. "So, maybe we'll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we'll change them both." He also announced the name change on Truth Social.

Canada refuses to accept the change
Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five Great Lakes by surface area and sits along the border between Canada's Ontario province and New York state in the US.Carney pointed to the lake's long history, saying its name dates back around 400 years and predates both the United States and Canada as modern states. He said the name comes from an Indigenous word referring to the lake as beautiful or large.Trump's latest move echoes his decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" in January 2025, a change that was also rejected by Mexico. Also read | 'OH MY GOD! US-Canada ties hit new low: Trump renames Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’

Donald Trump is considering a provocative new name for Lake Ontario, suggesting it could be renamed ‘Lake America’ as trade tensions between the United States and Canada continue to escalate. The US president made the remark on Tuesday as Canada prepared to announce retaliatory measures after Washington imposed 50 per cent tariffs on USD 20 billion worth of Canadian goods over the weekend. The move followed the collapse of trade negotiations between the two countries. In a social media post, Trump said, “The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don't expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer.” The proposal would mirror Trump's decision last year to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America through an executive order. Ontario, Canada's most populous province, is also a major centre of the country's automotive industry.
US-Canada trade tensions intensify
The latest comments come as rhetoric between Washington and Ottawa becomes increasingly confrontational. Trump told Canadian leaders on Monday to "fall in line" or face consequences "far WORSE" than the tariffs already imposed. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, meanwhile, accused the United States of seeking to subordinate Canada. Trump has also threatened an additional 50 per cent tariff on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel. Carney responded that US trade demands demonstrated an effort to undermine Canada's major industries. Canada and the United States maintain one of the world's largest trading relationships, with deeply integrated supply chains spanning automobiles, energy, agriculture and manufacturing. A prolonged tariff battle could therefore create significant costs for companies and workers in both countries while increasing uncertainty for consumers over potential price increases. Also Read: US diplomats set to return to Middle East embassies despite stalled Iran talks: Report
Businesses warn of impact
Michael Howard II, who owns a furniture business in Warren, Michigan, outside Detroit, said the tariffs could have a direct impact on his family's finances and the wider community.
