Former India selector Kiran More has opined that inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India's squad for upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan is based on recent form. The duo, who have not featured in any T20I for India since the semi-final of 2022 T20 World Cup against England. India had lost that match by 10 wickets. In 2023 ODI World Cup, however, the duo played superbly to take India into the final.

"They have been selected based on their recent form," said More while talking to the media outlet News18.&nbsp;

"Your (selectors) thinking changed slightly after two years. I don't know what their thinking was earlier but both gave fantastic performances in the World Cup and looked in form in the South Africa series as well," he added.

Rohit will also be leading the side as he does in ODIs and Tests and More said that recalling both of them is good news for Indian cricket.

"The way Rohit Sharma captained in the World Cup and we reached the final as well, he played exceptional innings, the aggression he showed, so the thinking changed slightly. So both have been recalled and it is very good news for Indian cricket," opined More.

The former selector's reasoning is valid as Rohit often gave India fast start at the ODI WC while Kohli scored record 765 runs in 11 matches.

The home series against Afghanistan is India's last international assignment in the T20Is before the T20 World Cup in June later this year. The Indian players will then play the domestic T20 tournament Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. Rohit plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL while Kohli has been with Royal Challengers Bangalore since inception of the league in 2008.

Both Rohit and Kohli may have not played in the T20Is in recent times but their performance in other formats including in the ODI World Cup surely makes India as one of the favorites to win the tournament with them in the squad.

The right-handed batter was among the runs during the first T20I against Ireland, and More, who has followed Gaikwad’s game for some time now, feels he clicks all the boxes and cannot wait for him to break into the Test side. Following the ongoing Ireland series, Gaikwad will lead the second-string Indian Men’s Team in the Asian Games, starting September 23 in China.

The vice-captain for this series, Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 19 off 16 balls, helping India stay ahead of the par score that saw them winning the rain-hit 1st T20I by eight wickets. The star CSK opener has played just white-ball cricket so far, but More thinks it’s about time before two youngsters, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gaikwad, will open for India in Tests.

"I'm waiting for his (Gaikwad) Test debut. Both (Gaikwad and Jaiswal) are outstanding players. Ruturaj can play all formats, his basics are so correct. He can be the future captain of India as well. He has got a great temperament. He plays under MS Dhoni, so he must have learned things about handling the team and handling the situations. He's a quality player, and I'm waiting for him to make his Test debut," More said while speaking to Jio Cinema.

<h2>Karim backs Gaikwad to fight for a place across formats</h2>

Gaikwad is yet to cement his place in India’s white-ball side, and given so much competition for the opener’s spot in the red-ball format too, former Indian selector Saba Karim also thinks Gaikwad will find it hard to first get into the Test side and then try to retain his place.

While the right-handed Gaikwad has just one fifty to his name in ten T20Is played, he averages over 40 in First-Class Cricket and around 60 in List- Games.

"Yashasvi scored a hundred on his Test debut, then smashed a half-century during the T20I series against West Indies as well. Things are not easy for him, because there are several cricketers waiting for Ruturaj Gaikwad to fail so they can get a look-in. This is when your character has to come out, can you take that pressure? That is why this is a phase where he has to rely on his ability and try to put a big score," Karim opined.

Meanwhile, Gaikwad will be in action during the second T20I, starting on Sunday in Dublin.

More was asked with split captaincy could work for the team, to which he replied that leading the team from the front in all three formats gets very tiring at one point.&nbsp;

"It [Split captaincy] can work in India. What the senior players think about the Indian team's future is very important. With Virat Kohli, captaining three teams isn't that easy plus he has to perform as well. And I give him the credit for it because performing in every format while captaining and winning... but, I think there will be a time when Virat Kohli will say 'Now it's enough, let Rohit lead the side'," said More.

"That will be very healthy actually. And this is a huge message for Indian cricket which will go on and on for generations. It's about respect that if Rohit Sharma is doing good he should be given a chance. I think Virat Kohli will set a great precedent if he does that. The future will hinge on his decision - how much rest he wants, if he wants to captain the Test team or the ODI team. He's a human too, his mind gets tired also," he concluded.
