Russia intensified attacks in the recently liberated Kherson region in southern Ukraine, with officials urging the civilians to evacuate the city immediately.

In the past 24 hours on Wednesday, Russia has fired 33 missiles in a series of aerial and artillery bombardments, specifically targeting civilians in Kherson, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said. However, Russia denies targeting civilians.

Ukraine has claimed that Russia deployed more tanks in the region as civilians fled from the city.

Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzheppar claimed that a maternity hospital was one of the targets of Russian forces in the southern city, which Kyiv only recently won back.

Heavy shellings were also reported in Bakhmut city, in the eastern province of Donetsk, and around the cities of Svatove and Kreminna in Luhansk province, where Ukrainian forces are trying to break Russian defensive lines.

Though forces were pushed back, relentless shelling in Kherson has made it difficult for people to live there.

Following an overnight trip from Kyiv, the first passenger train arrives in Kherson since Russian forces withdrew from the city on the 11th of November. It's a train of hope as it's reuniting many.

Only days after being retaken by Ukrainian forces, hundreds of inhabitants of the recently liberated city of Kherson lined up in the rain on Thursday to replace the Russian SIM cards in their mobile phones with local ones, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

Svitlana Kostikova, a &nbsp;54-year-old local resident and seamstress, who said she had had no option but to use a Russian SIM card told Reuters, "We finally have our victory, we've been liberated. Glory to Ukraine, glory to the heroes."

"I deleted all of my apps, and then was forced by circumstances to use it, to have a connection," she added.

The Kyiv government has installed relay stations throughout the city because it claims that Russian troops destroyed the Kherson communications network before departing.

Local telecom companies, notably Kyivstar and Vodafone, set up booths around the city's main square where people could either get a free SIM card or pay to avoid the line.&nbsp;

"My SIM card burned when my apartment was hit by a rocket. The whole building burned down, a four-storey building, 65 apartments," said Semyanova Liudmyla, 67, after picking up her free card.

Russian SIM cards were displayed by a local Kyivstar employee, who said that they had either been given away for free or sold by the Russian government during the occupation.

The Kyiv government has installed relay stations throughout the city because it claims that Russian troops destroyed the Kherson communications network before departing. Local telecom companies, notably Kyivstar and Vodafone, set up booths around the city's main square where people could either get a free SIM card or pay to avoid the line. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday made an unannounced visit to the recaptured southern city of&nbsp;Kherson. He thanked allies for the support the country has received. Earlier, Zelensky in his nightly video address on Sunday, had said Russian soldiers committed war crimes and killed civilians in the region.

"We are moving forward," he said in an address to Ukrainian troops, thanking NATO and other allies for their continuing support in the war against Russia.

"We are ready for peace, peace for all our country."

"Investigators have already documented more than 400 Russian war crimes. Bodies of dead civilians and servicemen have been found," Zelensky said.

"The Russian army left behind the same savagery it did in other regions of the country it entered," he said.

Mass graves have been routinely found in several places across Ukraine over the past few months. Civilian bodies showing evidence of torture were discovered in the Kharkiv region and in Bucha, near Kyiv. Ukraine had accused Russian troops of committing the crimes.

A United Nations commission in October had also accused Russia of committing war crimes in Ukraine and of a "vast majority" of human rights violations in the early weeks of the war.

Russian troops had been holding Kherson, the only regional capital it was able to capture, since the start of the invasion in February. Ukrainian troops arrived in the centre of southern Kherson region on Friday after it was abandoned by Moscow. There were heart-warming scenes on the streets as the villagers greeted the soldiers with flowers who poured in to secure control of the right bank of the Dnipro River.

Artillery exchanges could be heard on Sunday, but that did not stop people from gathering on Kherson's main square to celebrate the occasion. They tried to catch mobile phone signals from Starlink ground stations carried on Ukrainian military vehicles.

The governor of Kherson region, Yaroslav Yanushevych, said they will maintain a curfew from 5 pm to 8 am and ban people from leaving or entering the city as a security measure.

"The enemy mined all critical infrastructure," Yanushevych told Ukrainian TV. "We are trying to meet within a few days and (then) open the city," he said.

He asked citizens to stay away from the centre of the city as demining operations were due to happen. Zelensky also warned Kherson residents about the presence of Russian mines. "I am asking you please not to forget that the situation in Kherson region remains very dangerous," he said.

Most households in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson are still without electricity and water as utility companies struggle to repair crucial infrastructure damaged and mined by the retreating Russian forces, regional officials said on Sunday.&nbsp;Yaroslav Yanushevych, the governor of Kherson area, announced that as a security precaution, the government had chosen to impose a curfew from 5 pm to 8 am and prohibit anybody from leaving or entering the city.&nbsp;

The enemy mined every piece of vital infrastructure, Yanushevych said on Ukrainian television.&nbsp;

He added that he hoped mobile phone companies will soon be able to restart their service, saying, "We are trying to meet within a few days and (then) open the city."

After Russia abandoned the sole provincial capital it had taken over since it&nbsp;started its invasion in February, Ukrainian troops moved into the centre of Kherson on Friday.&nbsp;

The retreat was the third significant Russian pullback in the conflict and the first to involve giving up such a sizable occupied city in the face of a significant Ukrainian counteroffensive that has retaken areas of the east and south.&nbsp;

Train service to Kherson is anticipated to resume this week, according to the head of Ukrainian state railways.&nbsp;

The Russian defence ministry officially confirmed that the forces completely evacuated the region west of the Dnipro River in what they called a “strategic decision” taken by the Kremlin.

“In the Kherson direction, the move of Russian military units to the left bank of the Dnieper River was completed at 0500 [Moscow time] this morning,” the ministry said on Telegram.

The Ukrainian government previously expressed their fear that Russian forces can create a lot of damage while retreating from their position in Kherson. &nbsp;

The fears were somewhat confirmed once again as videos showed that the Antonivskyi Bridge on the Dnipro River was damaged following the evacuation.

In a&nbsp;potential turning point in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Moscow has ordered its military to withdraw from Ukraine's Kherson city. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Wednesday (November 8) that the troops will withdraw from the west bank of the Dnipro River amid Ukrainian attacks near the southern city of Kherson.&nbsp;

Speaking during a televised meeting with Russia's commander in Ukraine Sergei Surovikin, Shoigu asked to "begin to pull out troops". The defence minister's announcement can be deemed as Russia's most significant retreat in the eight-month-old war.&nbsp;

Kherson lies in the only pocket of Russian-held territory on the west bank of the Dnipro River that bisects Ukraine. Recapturing it has been the main focus of Ukraine's counter-offensive in the south which accelerated since the start of October.

Reuters said that the situation inside Kherson could not be independently confirmed. Ukrainian forces on the nearby frontline have told Reuters in recent days they expect a bitter fight against Russian troops, who cannot hold the city but are determined to exact a blood price before being forced out.

"While Kherson residents are being forcibly deported from their homes, talking about 'evacuation', ru-military and FSB officers are doing what they love most — robbing their houses," Ukrainian presidential advisor Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted on Monday. "Robbery of those whom they came to 'protect' — the best 'Russian world' illustration."
