Rishi Sunak began his career working as an analyst for investment firm Goldman Sachs in 2001. Between 2001 and 2015, he worked with multiple financial companies and was also a director of the investment firm Catamaran Ventures, a company owned by his father-in-law N. R. Narayana Murthy.

In 2019, Labour passed an emergency motion on Kashmir at its annual conference which led to offence to some British Indians and India itself.&nbsp;

The motion, which was passed under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, claimed that&nbsp;there was a humanitarian crisis in the Kashmir region.&nbsp;

The letter added, "We are adamant that the deeply felt and genuinely held differences on the issue of Kashmir must not be allowed to divide communities against each other here in the UK."&nbsp;

However, with time, a change in stance is also expected and Starmer is also certain that tensions must be eased considering the importance of the UK's relationship with a rapidly expanding economy such as India.&nbsp;

During public speeches and meetings with the Indian diaspora, Starmer, in fact, underlined that Kashmir is an internal matter of India and will be handled by both neighbours. Labour Party's manifesto mentioned that it looks for a "new strategic partnership" with India.&nbsp;

India and the UK are working to secure a free trade pact but the negotiations remain stalled in the 14th round due to summer of elections both in India and&nbsp;the UK. Now with new governments in both the capitals, the fifteenth round of negotiations is expected to begin in the coming future.

The point of contention remains with the UK's ask for greater market access into the world's third biggest economy amid New Delhi's focus on protecting domestic players.

The India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would be a key inflection point for bilateral ties between the two countries and the last British prime ministers, Conservatives Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak, were keen to be at the centre of the same.

Boris even commented that India-UK FTA would be concluded by the Diwali of 2022 and that it would be signed upon a bilateral visit by the leaders of either country. But the domestic political storm after partygate scandal threw Johnson off British premiership and brought in Liz Truss to the Downing Street.

After Truss, Rishi Sunak too expected to finish off the negotiations either by September 2023 G20 summit in New Delhi or the Diwali of 2023. But the contentious issues could not be sorted and negotiations reached a halt as election season loomed in both the countries.&nbsp;

Now Starmer just like his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, has full five years in power and that leaves a lot of room for negotiations and sorting out points of contention. He told the BBC that in April he successfully placed bets that the elections will take place between July and September. This was after he had lost similar bets in March.&nbsp;

However, he later denied making such bets and told the British broadcaster that he was joking. The minister who will not be participating in the election after seven years in Parliament also denies breaking any rules.&nbsp;

Sunak made the surprise announcement of holding the general elections in July, on May 22.&nbsp;

“I had no knowledge of the date of the election until the day it was called…I placed no bets in May and am not under investigation by the Gambling Commission,” he told the British broadcaster.&nbsp;

The betting scandal, which was previously limited to the Tories, also affected the opposition Labour Party as it suspended one of its general election candidates, reported the British media, on Tuesday (Jun 25).&nbsp;

Kevin Craig, Labour’s Central Suffolk and North Ipswich candidate, was “administratively” suspended after the party was informed by the Gambling Commission that they are launching an investigation into the contender.&nbsp;

Craig took to social media and released a statement acknowledging as well as apologising for what he called a “huge mistake”. He also said that he would “comply fully” with the investigation.&nbsp;

“A few weeks ago when I thought I would never win this seat I put a bet on the Tories to win here with the intention of giving any winnings to local charities,” the now-suspended Labour party member said.&nbsp;

He added, “While I did not place this bet with any prior knowledge of the outcome, this was a huge mistake, for which I apologise unreservedly,”&nbsp;

“I deeply regret what I have done and will take the consequences of this stupid error of judgement on the chin.”&nbsp;
