Toyota global output falls for 6th straight month in July

Japan this year recorded the country's highest-ever average temperature since the inception of records in 1898, the weather agency on Friday (September 1) said.

"Average temperatures in Japan are the highest for summer since 1898," the agency said.

From the month of June to August, the agency recorded "considerably higher" average summer temperatures in "northern, eastern, and western Japan".

"The average temperature anomaly in Japan, based on observations at 15 locations, was +1.76 degrees C, far exceeding that of 2010 (+1.08 degrees C), which was the highest since statistics began in 1898 and the highest for summer," it said in a statement.

"Warm air tended to cover northern Japan and warm air flowed in from the south, resulting in considerably higher average summer temperatures in northern, eastern, and western Japan," it added.

The agency further added that in many locations, such as Itoigawa City "not only maximum temperatures but also minimum temperatures reached record highs".&nbsp;

On August 10, the city in Japan's Niigata region recorded a low of 31.4 degrees Celsius (88.5 Fahrenheit), which was the highest daily minimum temperature in all of Japan.&nbsp;

The agency said that as compared to years with particularly high average summer temperatures (2010, 2013, 2018, and 2022), the number of days with soaring temperatures significantly increased from late July onward, taking the total to the highest number since 2010.

<h2>Heat-related deaths in Japan</h2>

July this year was officially declared as the country's warmest month in a century with at least 53 people succumbing to heatstrokes and nearly 50,000 needing emergency medical attention.

The Japan Times last month published a detailed report on heat-related deaths. Citing official statistics, it said that the number of heatstroke-related deaths increased from an average of 201 people a year between 1995 and 1999, to an average of 1295 from 2018 to 2022.&nbsp;

According to the report, the health ministry data showed that the elderly were the ones who were most impacted.&nbsp;

Other parts of the world also witnessed record temperatures this summer. As per EU's climate observatory Copernicus, July 2023, which saw heatwaves and fires around the world, was the hottest month ever registered on Earth.

In France this month late-summer records toppled as a "heat dome" bore down on much of the country, hitting the southern half and Mediterranean coast especially hard. &nbsp;

The official report noted that ERA5 data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service shows that July 2023 was the hottest month on record globally and broke several records within the month.&nbsp;

This comes after the hottest June on record and a series of extreme weather events, including heatwaves in Europe, North America and Asia, and wildfires in Canada and Greece.&nbsp;

According to the report, the month started with the daily global mean surface air temperature record being broken for four days in a row, from July 3-6.&nbsp;

It further mentioned that all days throughout the rest of July were hotter than the previous record of 16.80°C, set on 13 August 2016, making the 29 days from July 3-31 the hottest 29 days on record.&nbsp;

The hottest day was July 6, when the global average temperature reached 17.08°C, and the values recorded on&nbsp;July 5 and 7 were within 0.01°C of this.&nbsp;

According to the report by Copernicus Climate Change Service, temperatures also temporarily exceeded the 1.5°C threshold above the preindustrial level during the first and third weeks of the month.&nbsp;

As quoted, Carlo Buontempo, Director of C3S, comments: "Record-breaking temperatures are part of the trend of drastic increases in global temperatures. Anthropogenic emissions are ultimately the main driver of these rising temperatures."&nbsp;

Buontempo added, "July's record is unlikely to remain isolated this year, C3S' seasonal forecasts indicate that over land areas temperatures are likely to be well above average."&nbsp;

Copernicus also reports that global average sea surface temperatures have exceeded typical levels since May 2023. Notably, July has seen the highest ocean temperatures ever recorded for this time of the year, further stressing the severity of the ongoing climate crisis.

Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for space studies, has said that July is likely to be the hottest month the earth has experienced in hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

This announcement was made during a meeting at NASA's Washington headquarters, which brought together agency climate experts, NASA's administrator Bill Nelson, and senior climate adviser Kate Calvin.

As the climate crisis unfolds, a persistent heatwave has scorched parts of the US&nbsp;south, and extreme weather events, such as deadly floods and Canadian wildfire smoke, have underscored the urgent need for climate action.

<h2>Unprecedented changes and rising temperatures</h2>

The global temperature analysis by NASA&nbsp;indicated that June was the hottest month on record. Schmidt emphasised that the observed changes, while shocking, are not surprising to scientists.

Over the past four decades, temperatures have shown a continuous increase, leading to unprecedented changes worldwide, as reported by the Guardian.

<h2>2023 on track to be hottest year on record</h2>

Schmidt's calculations suggest that earth has a 50 per cent&nbsp;chance of setting a new temperature record in 2023, while other models project an 80 per cent&nbsp;chance..

Scientists anticipate that 2024 will be even hotter due to the El Niño weather pattern, which has a tendency to boost global temperatures and may peak toward the end of this year.

The last significant El Niño event from 2014 to 2016 resulted in successive global temperature records, with 2016 becoming the hottest year on record.

These initiatives include the earth information centre, which provides real-time climate data from NASA's 25 satellites. This biodegradability ensures that bamboo products have a lower long-term impact on the environment compared to non-biodegradable materials and therefore bamboo is extensively grown at many of our sites.

It is made from the bark of the cork oak tree, which is a natural and renewable resource. Cork has great insulating qualities, and is lightweight, buoyant, and impermeable to liquids and gases. The cork tree can regenerate and continue to produce cork for many years as the harvesting procedure is sustainable and does not harm the tree. Cork is biodegradable, and compared to plastic, cork production has a smaller carbon footprint. 
 
The rubber tree is primarily cultivated for latex production, which is used to make natural rubber. Natural rubber is often used as an alternative to synthetic rubbers derived from petroleum. It has a wide range of applications, including tyres, footwear, and various industrial and consumer products.

The first supermoon of 2023 which will be seen in July will appear brighter in the night sky compared to any other full moon that has been witnessed this year. 
 
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the full moon will be seen in the sky on Monday (July 3) and it will reach its illumination below the horizon at 7:39 am ET. Depending on the local weather conditions, the citizens of the United States can view the celestial event by gazing in the southeast after the sun sets. 
 
Director of the Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University Dr Shannon Schmoll said, “A supermoon is when the moon appears a little bit bigger in our sky. As the moon goes around the Earth, it’s not a perfect circle. So, there are points in its orbit where it’s a little bit closer or a little bit farther from the Earth.”

A supermoon occurs when the orb reaches the phase of the full moon at a point on its path when it comes in close proximity to the Earth. The moon appears slightly larger in size. Even though the naked eye may not be able to see the size difference between a typical full moon and a supermoon immediately, The Old Farmer’s Almanac stated that summer's first full moon will be more luminous and just 224,895.4 miles (361,934 kilometres) away from Earth.

The moon in the month of July is called the buck moon. July is the month when the antlers of the male deer grow during an annual cycle of regrowth and shedding, as per the almanac. The buck moon has several other names which come from Native American peoples, as per Western Washington University. 
 
The names of the moon like hot moon refer to the season of summer while terms like ripe corn moon and raspberry moon have been coined as names to signify the best times for harvesting fruit and other crops.

Australia to tour Sri Lanka for all-format series in June, July

Britain has recorded the highest number of new cases of COVID-19 since July over the past week, reveal government figures. A total of 333,465 people in Britain tested positive for the deadly coronavirus over the past seven days.&nbsp;

As per daily figures, there were 44,985 new cases on Saturday, down from 49,298 on Friday. Daily death figures were only available for England and showed that there were 135 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test.&nbsp;

Deaths have surged by 12 per cent over the past week, and the total since the start of the pandemic now stands at 139,461, which is the second-highest in Europe after Russia.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday ruled out the possibility of a lockdown. This comes in as the advisers warned that acting early with lighter measures to cut the rise in cases would reduce the need for tougher restrictions later.

And now, with the virus still surging in some parts of the country, a growing number of employers are delaying return-to-office dates once again, to the summer of 2021 at the earliest.

In the past week, Microsoft, Target, Ford Motor Co. and The New York Times said they, too, had postponed the return of in-person work to next summer and acknowledged the inevitable: The pandemic isn’t going away anytime soon.

“Let’s just bite the bullet,” said Joan Burke, the chief people officer of DocuSign in San Francisco. In August, her company, which manages electronic document signatures, decided it would allow its 5,200 employees to work from home until June 2021.

“We’re still in a place where this is evolving,” she said. “None of us have all the answers.”

Many more companies are expected to delay their return-to-office dates to keep workers safe. And workers said they were in no rush to go back, with 73% of U.S. employees fearing that being in their workplace could pose a risk to their personal health and safety, according to a study by Wakefield Research commissioned by Envoy, a workplace technology company.

More companies are also saying that they will institute permanent work-from-home policies so employees do not ever have to come into the office again.

In May, Facebook was one of the first to announce that it would allow many employees to work remotely even after the pandemic. Twitter, Coinbase and Shopify have also said they would do so. On Friday, Microsoft announced it would also be part of that shift.

The elongating timelines and changing policies add up to a continued balancing act for companies as the coronavirus shatters work norms and upends assumptions about where workers need to be to achieve maximum productivity. Employers are also under pressure to be as open as possible about their intentions so that workers can plan ahead with their lives.

The postponement of return dates is a “psychological blow for those who expected this to be a transition phase,” said Tsedal Neeley, a Harvard Business School professor who studies remote work. “The reality is hitting that, ‘There won’t be a vaccine as I expected very quickly. This is going to be my life, and I’d better learn how to do this.’”

Neeley likened the situation to waiting at an airport terminal for a flight that is continually delayed. With the new dates announced, she said, people can finally start adjusting from a temporary “grinning and bear it” approach to a permanent shift.

Successful companies “have begun to think about long-term strategy rather than ‘Let’s just survive our crisis,’” she said.

Much of corporate America is now following the lead of Silicon Valley tech companies like Google and Facebook. They were among those that allowed employees to work from home even before the pandemic hit in full force in March. Since then, Facebook has set the tone in planning for permanent remote work, while Google established the July 2021 target date for returning to the office.

“I hope this will offer the flexibility you need to balance work with taking care of yourselves and your loved ones over the next 12 months,” Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, wrote in an email to employees about the July 2021 date.

Other employers soon emulated the tech giants, also citing worker flexibility as a key factor in pushing their return-to-office dates to next summer.

Burke, the DocuSign executive, said announcing the June 2021 return date to employees prompted a “collective sigh of relief inside the company” because it put an end to the incremental postponements and uncertainty of when they would be expected to return.

Remote work has been productive, she said, and people like not having to commute. But a mix of in-person and remote is probably the most popular option for employees when life returns to normal, she said, because they also miss the social interaction of an office space.

Zoom “is not the same thing, and it’s exhausting,” Burke said. “By 7 o’clock last night, I was Zoomed out.”

Other companies that have delayed their returns to the office until next summer often face a more complicated decision because their workforces are not just made up of white-collar engineers, unlike those of internet companies.

Ford said last week that its decision to hold off on back in-person office work through June 2021 would apply to its roughly 32,000 employees in North America who are already working remotely. The company, which has about 188,000 employees, said the policy does not apply to factory staff.

When Target announced its decision to let some employees continue to work at home through June 2021 in a letter to staff last week, it said it would apply just to employees at its headquarters in Minneapolis. The dispute, rooted in their wartime past and exacerbated by the recent tightening of curbs on shipments of three high-tech components, has stoked nationalism and raised trade concerns. Relations between the two US allies worsened late last year as part of a decades-old dispute over compensation for forced labourers during Japan's occupation. South Korea has invoked its difficult history with Japan, which colonised the Korean peninsula during World War Two. "Usually, we don't announce each time we give export permission. However, the South Korean government has referred to our moves as an embargo on exports, which is unfair criticism," Japanese Industry Minister Hiroshige Seko told a briefing. It is the first time since the export curbs were introduced last month that Japan has allowed shipment of one of the three high-tech materials, he said. He was quick to add Tokyo would expand the curbs beyond the three specialised chemicals - fluorinated polyimides, photoresists and hydrogen fluoride - if there were any cases of "improper" use. Some of the chemicals, which are used to make smartphone displays and chips, can also be used in weapons. Japanese officials have cited unspecified security reasons for their export curbs. But they have pointed to an erosion of trust after South Korean court rulings last year ordered Japanese firms to compensate wartime forced labourers. Tokyo says the matter was settled by a 1965 treaty normalising bilateral ties. South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, said on Thursday that tighter curbs would undermine Japan's international credibility and accused Tokyo of using its industrial advantage as a weapon against another country. "Even if there are any gains, it will be short-lived. In the end, it is a game without winners, where everyone, including Japan itself, becomes a victim," Moon said. White list The high-tech material that has been just cleared by Japan for export is EUV photoresists, South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon said. The chemical is crucial for Samsung's advanced contract chipmaking production. Samsung declined to comment. But it remains unclear if this approval from Tokyo signals a breakthrough in trade relations. "They approved only one out of a number of items," a South Korean senior trade ministry official pointed out. A presidential official said: "It doesn't mean that uncertainties have been completely removed for the other items." Japan has removed South Korea from the "white list" of countries with fast-track trade status, meaning some exporters may have to go through a lengthy permit application process to ship restricted items to South Korea. That covers a broad range of items, including those applicable to weapons production and machine tools. South Korea, which was scheduled to take a call on a plan to drop Japan from its "white list" on Thursday, has, however, put off the decision until further discussions. But the country has said it plans to tighten regulations on imported coal ashes, mostly from Japan, used to produce cement, and has proposed tax benefits for local firms in case they need to buy foreign chemical makers as Seoul tries to cut reliance on Japan. The curbs have also prompted concern among corporate Japan. "This situation benefits neither Japan nor South Korea," Masashi Oka, senior executive vice president at Nikon, told a recent briefing. "We strongly hope that both countries can return to normal economic activity as soon as possible." Given the curbs in place, Japan's approval to export the three materials could take up to 90 days, slowing shipments. Vital link The export curbs highlight how Japan controls a vital link in the global supply chain. It remains a major player in specialised chip components, even though it was overtaken as a chipmaker years ago by South Korea. At a New York event for a new flagship phone launch, the head of Samsung's mobile division told reporters he could not rule out a potential impact on the supply chain for smartphone production if the curbs dragged on for more than four months. Shares of Tokyo Ohka Kogyo rose 3.9% and Stella Chemifa surged 10.1% after the latest export approval. Tokyo Ohka Kogyo makes photoresists and Stella Chemifa produces hydrogen fluoride, both materials affected by the export curbs. South Korean chipmakers are hitting a dead-end in their quest to find alternatives for key Japanese materials that have been slapped with restrictions, raising the prospect of major disruption to their operations in coming months.

Taking a step forward to break the lock jam on stalled India-Pakistan officials levels talks on Kartarpur, New Delhi has proposed Islamabad any date between July 11 to 14 at Attari-Wagah on the Pakistani side for the second round of talks.

The second round of talks was originally expected to happen on April 2 but New Delhi had postponed the talks as Pakistan had appointed Khalistani elements on a committee associated with the Kartarpur corridor.

A known Khalistani and close aide of 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed, Gopal Singh Chawla was appointed to Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak committee which oversees the project on Pakistan side.

The first round of India Pakistan talks was held on March 14 on the Indian side of Attari-Wagah border.

The focus of the upcoming meeting, if Pakistan agrees, would be to discuss the draft agreement on the Kartarpur corridor which includes movement of pilgrims, alignment and infrastructure along the corridor.

India during the first round of talks had proposed that the corridor should be open to Indian citizens and Indian diaspora with 5000 people allowed very day, Pakistan said it can allow only 700 people that too only Indian citizens on designated days with a paid permit.

Other than India Pakistan officials level talks, 3 technical level discussions have taken place between both sides to discuss and finalise alignment and other related issues.

Work in on full swing on the Indian side of the Kartarpur corridor with 45% of work being completed. India is building a 4 lane highway and passenger bus terminal. The deadline for construction for the entire project is October 2019, just a month ahead of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji.

Meanwhile, as part of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji, India has asked Islamabad to facilitate Nagar Kirtan to which is organized by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee at Gurudwara Nankana Sahib in July 2019 and then in October-November 2019.

India also asked Islamabad to increase the number of pilgrims to visit the religious shrines in Pakistan to 10000 under the 1974 bilateral Protocol.
