US President Donald Trump took a shot on Tuesday at former Vice President Joe Biden, a possible Democratic rival in the 2020 race for the White House, mocking him over allegations of unwanted physical contact with women.

In a speech to a fundraising dinner for the National Republican Congressional Committee, Trump twice alluded to the allegations from two women that are hanging over Biden as he weighs whether to enter the contest to become the Democratic candidate in November 2020 presidential elections.

A former Nevada state legislator last week accused Biden of kissing her on the back of the head at a 2014 event, and a Connecticut woman said Biden rubbed noses with her at a 2009 event. Biden has said he did not believe he ever acted inappropriately, and his defenders have said he is known for hugging and being physically affectionate.

In wide-ranging remarks that meandered for more than 80 minutes but often circled back to the 2020 race, Biden was the only potential rival Trump mentioned by name - a sign that he would view Biden as a strong challenger, was he to enter and win the Democratic race.

Biden was vice president under President Barack Obama and had a long career in the Senate before that. He had been expected to announce his bid for the Democratic primary race this month and has led the large field of Democratic hopefuls in opinion polls.

Trump told the dinner, which raised $23 million for Republicans running for the House of Representatives, a story about wanting to kiss a general he met in Iraq who had promised an expedient end to a campaign against Islamic State militants in Syria.

"I said, 'General: come here and give me a kiss.' I felt like Joe Biden," Trump said, drawing laughter and applause.

Earlier, he told the crowd - which was dotted with members of the House - that they would be "going into the war with some socialists" in the next election.

"It looks like the only non-, sort of, heavy socialist is being taken care of pretty well by the socialists," Trump said.

One of Biden's accusers has been a supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders, who has already entered the Democratic primary race, and whose views are to the left of Biden.

"I was going to call him - I don't know him well - I was going to say, 'Welcome to the world, Joe. You have a good time, Joe? You have a good time?" Trump said.

Trump struggled during his 2016 run for office with multiple accusations of unwanted sexual contact from women, particularly after videotaped remarks emerged of Trump bragging about groping women.

Biden, while campaigning for Trump's Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, had said he would like to take Trump "behind the gym" to beat him up for the comments.

Trump takes shot at former vice president Joe Biden over kiss complaint

Joe Biden's 2020 campaign-in-waiting pushed back Monday on "smears" it said he faces regarding his physical contact with women, as a new accuser emerged to say the former vice president crossed the line into indecency.

Biden's spokesman pointed to doctored or misleading photographs that have circulated on the internet for years spotlighting what the 76-year-old Democrat himself describes as a "tactile" campaign style.

With two women in the past week going public to recount how Biden inappropriately touched them years ago, scrutiny on his history of unwanted contact has surged as he considers a presidential campaign.

"These smears and forgeries have existed in the dark recesses of the internet for a while," the spokesman, Bill Russo, said in a statement, referring to images that show Biden being overly familiar with women and children.

"And to this day, right-wing trolls and others continue to exploit them," he added.

The push-back comes as a Connecticut woman said Biden inappropriately touched her at a 2009 political fundraiser when he was vice president.

"It wasn't sexual, but he did grab me by the head," Amy Lappos told Connecticut's Hartford Courant newspaper.

"He put his hand around my neck and pulled me in to rub noses with me. When he was pulling me in, I thought he was going to kiss me on the mouth."

Lappos, 43, said she never filed a complaint because she believed it would go nowhere, but she was aware of the line of decency and respect that should have been honoured.

"Crossing that line is not grandfatherly," she said. "It's not cultural. It's not affection. It's sexism or misogyny."

Biden has yet to declare his candidacy, but he is already the early favourite to win the Democratic nomination and challenge Donald Trump in next year's election.

Biden was hit last week with an accusation by former Nevada state lawmaker Lucy Flores, who recalled being "mortified" when he planted a "big, slow kiss" on the back of her head as she waited to take the stage at a campaign rally five years ago.

He issued a statement Sunday saying he would respectfully listen to women who accused him of misconduct, but that in his decades of public life, "not once -- never -- did I believe I acted inappropriately."

Biden has had a reputation for awkwardly touching the wives, mothers or daughters of senators during swearing-in ceremonies.

He came under criticism for massaging the shoulders of Ash Carter's wife in 2015 as her husband was sworn in as secretary of defence.

Photographs of that incident have circulated online so frequently that Stephanie Carter posted a column Sunday saying Biden was mere "a close friend helping someone get through a big day, for which I will always be grateful."

Former US vice president Biden's camp rejects 'smears' about his physicality with women

A Connecticut woman said former US Vice President Joe Biden touched her inappropriately and rubbed noses with her at a 2009 political fundraiser, becoming the second person in three days to accuse the former vice president of unwanted physical contact as he considers a White House run.

"It wasn't sexual, but he did grab me by the head," Amy Lappos, 43, told the Hartford Courant on Monday of her encounter with Biden at a Greenwich, Connecticut, event. "He put his hand around my neck and pulled me in to rub noses with me. When he was pulling me in, I thought he was going to kiss me on the mouth."

Lappos posted about the alleged incident in a Connecticut Women in Politics Facebook group on Sunday in response to an account by former Nevada state legislator Lucy Flores, who last week accused Biden of kissing her on the back of the head at a 2014 event.

The allegations could endanger a possible 2020 presidential run by Biden, who was vice president under President Barack Obama at the time of both alleged instances. He has been expected to announce a Democratic White House bid in the coming weeks and has been leading the Democratic presidential field in opinion polls.

Asked about the Connecticut allegation, a Biden spokesman pointed to Biden's statement on Sunday, when he said he did not believe he ever acted inappropriately during his many years in public life and on the campaign trail.

"I have offered countless handshakes, hugs, expressions of affection, support and comfort. And not once — never — did I believe I acted inappropriately," Biden said in the statement. "If it is suggested I did so, I will listen respectfully. But it was never my intention."

Biden has long been known for a warm and intimate campaign style, but his propensity for hugging and physical touching has come under new scrutiny in the #MeToo era as awareness about sexual assault and harassment has grown.

Lappos, a former aide to US Representative Jim Himes, told the Courant she felt uncomfortable when Biden approached her at a fundraiser for Himes. She said she was in the kitchen with three or four other volunteers when Biden moved toward her.

"I never filed a complaint, to be honest, because he was the vice president. I was a nobody," said Lappos, who is now a freelance worker with nonprofit agencies. "There's absolutely a line of decency. There's a line of respect. Crossing that line is not grandfatherly. It's not cultural. It's not affection. It's sexism or misogyny."

Lappos did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Reuters.

Some Biden supporters rallied to his defence. Elizabeth Alexander, a former Senate and White House aide to Biden, wrote in a USA Today column that he supported women and was a champion for their rights even when it was not politically expedient.

Second woman says former US vice president Joe Biden touched her inappropriately

A spokesman for Joe Biden said the former vice president does not recall an incident in 2014 when a female activist said he inappropriately kissed her, but some of his potential rivals for the Democratic nomination said on Saturday they believe his accuser.

The allegation was made in an online essay published on Friday by Lucy Flores, a party activist who was running to be Nevada's lieutenant governor. Flores said Biden also touched her shoulders and smelled her hair when they appeared at an event together, making her feel uncomfortable.

"He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head," Flores wrote in the essay published in The Cut, an outlet of New York Magazine. "I couldn't move and I couldn't say anything. I wanted nothing more than to get Biden away from me."

Responding to the accusation, Biden spokesman Bill Russo said the vice president had been happy to support Flores and to speak on her behalf at the event.

"Neither then, nor in the years since, did he or the staff with him at the time have an inkling that Ms. Flores had been at any time uncomfortable, nor do they recall what she describes," Russo said on Friday in a statement.

Biden believes Flores has every right to share her own recollection, Russo added, and that it is a positive change for U.S. society that she has the opportunity.

In a separate statement on Saturday, Russo said: "People know Joe Biden and they know his character, his integrity and his values," adding that he was a champion for women.

Biden served eight years as vice president under former President Barack Obama and 36 years in the U.S. Senate. He has not yet said whether he will run for president in 2020, but has been expected to throw his hat into the ring soon.

Some of his potential rivals for the Democratic party's nomination to take on Republican Donald Trump addressed the allegation on Saturday.

Elizabeth Warren, a U.S. senator from Massachusetts, told reporters in Iowa that she believed Flores.

"Joe Biden needs to give an answer," Warren said.

Julian Castro, a former U.S. secretary of housing and urban development from Texas who is also running for president, said he also found Flores credible, according to news reports.

Flores supported Bernie Sanders in his losing 2016 bid for the Democratic nomination. Although the U.S. Senator from Vermont is running again, Flores has said on Twitter that she has not endorsed any of the candidates in this race.

Should Biden decide to run in 2020, after failed bids to be the party's nominee in 1988 and 2008, he will be a key figure in the Democratic debate over whether a liberal political newcomer or a centrist veteran is needed to win back the White House.

News brief: Big stories of the day

Joe Biden, who is leading polls for the Democratic presidential nomination, on Friday faced a misconduct accusation by a Nevada ex-lawmaker claiming the then-vice president inappropriately kissed her before a campaign event.

Lucy Flores, the state's Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in 2014, said she was beside the stage awaiting her turn to address a rally when Biden put his hands on her shoulders from behind, then leaned in and smelled her hair.

"I was mortified," Flores, 39, recounted in New York magazine.

"He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head," she added.

"My brain couldn't process what was happening. I was embarrassed. I was shocked. I was confused," and "I wanted nothing more than to get Biden away from me."

It was unclear just how the accusation might impact Biden's decision to officially enter the race. Those close to the Democrat have reportedly said Biden, 76, could announce his plans in April.

Biden's spokesman Bill Russo said Friday that Biden was "pleased" to support Flores's candidacy, but does not recall the incident.

"Neither then, nor in the years since, did he or the staff with him at the time have an inkling that Ms Flores had been at any time uncomfortable, nor do they recall what she describes," Russo said in a statement.

He added that Biden "believes that Ms Flores has every right to share her own recollections and reflections and that it is a change for better in our society that she has the opportunity to do so."

Biden's overly familiar approach with women has been a subject of discussion for years.

He has had a reputation for awkwardly touching the wives, mothers or daughters of senators during swearing-in ceremonies, and he came under criticism for massaging the shoulders of new defence secretary Ash Carter's wife in 2015.

Biden's behaviour is receiving renewed attention in the #MeToo era when the movement against sexual assault has led to the downfall of dozens of politicians, entertainment figures and businessmen.

At a Democratic Party dinner in Delaware this month, he acknowledged how his physical style has raised questions.

"I'm a tactile politician, always have been. That's what gets me in trouble as well," Biden said.

Flores wrote that the celebrated Democrat ignores the "power imbalance" that exists between Biden and the women he touches.

"Even if his behaviour wasn't violent or sexual, it was demeaning and disrespectful," she added.

Ex-lawmaker says Joe Biden inappropriately touched her in 2014

Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie on Saturday said that former United States vice president Joe Biden has the best chance of beating President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

“I think the one that the President would be most afraid of if he can stay in his lane is Biden. And the reason why Biden could go to Ohio and Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and Michigan and appeal to white working-class voters. And if he does that, he only has to peel off 7,000-10,000 votes in each one of those states, and he only has to win two of them,” said Christie during HBO's Real Time with Bill Mahar.

The Republican leader made these remarks while appearing on the HBO's Real Time with Bill Mahar show for the promotion of his recently launched book 'Let Me Speak'.

According to a poll surveying 689 Democratic and independent voters conducted by USA Today and Suffolk University, Obama-era vice president Biden, 76, is now the most popular option to be the next presidential candidate for the Democrats, as fifty-three per cent of voters said they felt excited about Biden running, while only seven per cent expressed the same enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton, reported Sputnik.

The former governor also heaped praise on the three-term independent senator Bernie Sanders by saying that Sanders has an outlook. "I think Bernie has a little bit of that. You know, Bernie doesn’t back down to anybody and when Bernie’s got a point of view, he’s gonna say it and he doesn’t really sugarcoat anything. So I think Sanders is one of those people,” he said.

However, Sanders has not yet announced a run for the White House, though he has said he will “probably run” for president in 2020.

When asked about President Trump's "not so good" presidency, the former governor said, "We had a lot of President in the history who had a questionable moral code."

Police found a ninth suspicious package that was addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden at a mail facility in New Castle County, Delaware, CBS News reported, citing federal authorities.

None of the nine devices went off and no injuries were reported, but some top Democrats called the threats a symptom of a coarsening brand of political rhetoric promoted by Trump, who also condemned the acts.

At a Wisconsin rally Wednesday night Trump called attention to "how nice I’m behaving tonight” but on Thursday morning he attacked the media.

All the people who were targeted are frequently maligned by right-wing critics, including former US President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder.

The bomb packages were sent as the nation prepared for Nov. 6 elections that will decide whether Democrats take control of one or both houses of Congress from Republicans and deny Trump the majority his party now holds in both chambers.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Several politicians, including US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, described it as an act of terrorism.

Last week, Trump, who joined other Republicans in accusing Democrats of encouraging "mob" tactics, heaped praise on a Montana congressman who assaulted a reporter in 2017.

At an event in Texas on Wednesday, Brennan faulted Trump for frequent inflammatory rhetoric.

The first package, which turned up on Monday, was addressed to Soros, the billionaire financier and advocate of liberal, open-border values who is a frequent target of right-wing conspiracy theories.

The parcel intended for Holder ended up rerouted to the return address printed on all the packages - the Florida office of U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a former chair of the Democratic National Committee, according to the FBI.

The FBI late Wednesday confirmed that two additional packages, similar in appearance to the others, were addressed to Waters.

The other packages consisted of a manila envelope with a bubble-wrap interior containing "potentially destructive devices." Each bore a computer-printed address label and six "Forever" postage stamps, the FBI said

Other officials said the devices contained in the envelopes were all similar to the one found in the mailbox of the Soros home and later detonated by police. At least one bomb was packed with shards of glass, one federal source said.

Two more bombs sent to former US Vice President Biden, actor De Niro

After being a TV star for most of her adult life, speculation is now rife that Oprah Winfrey might take on Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential elections.

The speculation arose after Oprah's electrifying speech at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night.

But could it actually happen?

If one were to do a SWOT analysis, these would be Oprah's strengths:

At 63, Oprah is younger than some of the top Democrats who might also run for the post including former vice-president Joe Biden and US Senator Bernie Sanders.

Oprah's wealth would also be a tremendous asset. Her current net worth is $2.8 billion; Trump is currently worth $3.1 billion.

Oprah has also built much goodwill among the Democrats by backing Barack Obama in 2008 and Hilary Clinton in 2016. She has also contributed more than $95,000 to the party.

And of course there is the fact that Oprah has appeared in homes across the US for 25 years -- Monday through Friday -- she is a well-known name.

Her weaknesses would include:

Even the most popular candidates need to get their message across to voters, identify their supporters, and, most important of all, get them to vote. Experienced politicians know how to build support systems to help them do all of that -- Oprah would have to start from scratch.

Oprah's business tries are extensive and include a cable channel and a magazine. She is also a contributor to CBS News' '60 minutes'. Any of which may throw up conflicts of interests should she decide to run for the post.

Then again, if a property developer-turned-reality TV star with no prior political experience could win the US presidency on his first try, there is no reason to believe Oprah will necessarily be unsuccessful.

But having said that, three years is a long time in politics.

And the first problem has already emerged.

A day after her Golden Globes speech, pictures emerged of Oprah with disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Oprah, should she decide to run, would do well to remember presidential candidates face a vetting far more invasive than anything she has endured before.

Oprah to take on Trump in 2020 US presidential election?

The US Congress on Friday certified Donald Trump's presidential election win, even as some of the members raised objections about the vote count in some states and the Russian hacking scandal.

"I object because people are horrified by the overwhelming evidence of Russian interference in our election," said Representative Barbara Lee of California before being overruled, Reuters reported.

The final vote count was held in the House of Representatives chamber that certified Trump's nomination as the President of the United States.

Donald Trump had received 304 votes while his rival Hillary Clinton got 227 votes in a hotly-contested election.

The US Vice President Joe Biden said the official count "shall be deemed sufficient declaration" for Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence to take their oaths of office on January 20, reported AFP.

US Congress affirms Trump's presidential win

Since Donald Trump's victory in the November 8 US presidential election, memes imagining conversations between President Barack Obama and US Vice-President Joe Biden have flooded the internet. "Breaking Bad" actor Aaron paul, Toronto city councilor Norm Kelly were among the people who tweeted out pictures of the duo.

The memes feature Biden suggesting practical jokes that could be played on president-elect Donald Trump as the two prepare to hand over the power and Obama trying to reign in Biden's enthusiasm for pranking.

After US elections, Twitter's exploding with Obama-Biden memes on Trump

US Vice President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in a phone call urged a speedy resolution to the conflict with pro-Russian separatists amid a spike in tensions with Moscow, the White House said late on Friday.

Biden and Poroshenko "expressed concern over the recent surge in fighting in eastern Ukraine, where ceasefire violations by combined Russian-separatist forces are at their highest levels since 2015, often using heavy weapons", the White House statement read.

Kiev and the West accuse Russia of supporting the separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine and deploying troops across the border, claims hatMoscow denies.

Biden and Poroshenko "reiterated the need for a political and diplomatic resolution of the conflict through full implementation of the Minsk agreements by all parties," the statement added.

The Minsk accord, signed in February 2015 with French and German mediation and in the presence of President Vladimir Putin, calls for a ceasefire along with a range of political, economic and social measures to end the conflict.

Biden told Poroshenko that US officials "had sent a message to Russia that the world is watching and underscored the need to deescalate the situation."

He also urged Ukraine to show restraint.

Poroshenko on Thursday said he could not rule out a "full-scale" Russian invasion as violence raged in the east, amid accusations that Russia was building up its military force in the region.

The Pentagon on Friday said that the extra Russian troops along the border were associated with a regular military exercise.

Poroshenko's claim came after Russian President Vladimir Putin lashed out last week at Kiev over an incident on the frontier between Crimea, which Moscow annexed in March 2014, and Ukraine, accusing it of "practicing terror".

Two Russian officers were killed in the incident, in which Ukraine denied any involvement.

Putin on Friday visited Crimea to boost security measures there. It was his fifth visit to the Black Sea peninsula since annexing it from Ukraine.

Separately, Biden and Poroshenko discussed conditions set by the International Monetary Fund for disbursing the next tranche of much-needed financial assistance, the White House said.

They also "agreed on the importance of recent Ukrainian efforts to continue critical anti-corruption reforms", the statement said.
