At least 23 people had been injured, the agency said. The deceased was identified as a 65-year-old man who he fell from a ladder during the earthquake.

"Our staff are out checking damage from the quake," an official from Suzu in Ishikawa prefecture, the hardest-hit city, told AFP.

Around 1,630 residents of Suzu have been evacuated, with about 250 taking shelter in evacuation centres, Jiji news agency reported late Saturday.

Over 100 households in the region were without running water as of Saturday afternoon, and roads were closed in many areas, the agency added.

The city had provided temporary public supplies after running water had turned brown in parts of the region, officials said earlier.

Clips surfaced online of the tremors showed a grocery shop strewn with broken wine bottles and other products that had fallen from shelves.

"I asked a carpenter for a makeshift fix of the house, and the house is now covered with a blue tarp to protect it from rainwater," one man told public broadcaster NHK.

Bullet trains connecting Tokyo and Kanazawa in Ishikawa prefecture were temporarily halted on Friday for safety checks, but resumed with some delays, East Japan Railway Co said.

Train services in other regions were disrupted following the quake, as passengers were out during a public holiday in Japan, part of a run of days off known as “Golden Week” when many people travel for leisure or to visit family.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who recently returned from a tour to four African nations and Singapore, on Friday had expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.

"I express my heartfelt condolences to the person who died and offer my sympathies to those who were hit by the disaster," Kishida said.

"The government will continue taking measures with a sense of urgency while closely communicating with (officials) at the scene," Kishida told reporters.

"Cooperation and coordination between South Korea and Japan are essential not only for the common interests of the two countries but also for world peace and prosperity in the face of the current severe international situation," Yoon said in opening remarks at their meeting.

Ahead of&nbsp;Hiroshima G7 summit scheduled from 19 May, Kishida is working to repair their fraught ties amid shared concerns over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

One of the main issues between the two countries is the legacy of Japan's colonization of Korea from 1910 to 1945. Many Koreans still harbor resentment towards Japan for its brutal treatment during this period, including forced labor and sexual slavery.

Before leaving on Sunday, Kishida stated that the two leaders were trying to resume their so-called "shuttle diplomacy" which had been put on hold for years due to a contentious trade dispute including the problem of forced labour.

Kishida invited Yoon to a G7 meeting in Hiroshima this month. In their March summit, both the nations agreed to eliminate tit-for-tat trade restrictions. In a statement, Kishida expressed his desire for "an honest exchange of views" with Yoon, "based on a relationship of trust".

Kishida also laid flowers at the Seoul National Cemetery after his arrival, which is home to South Korea's war dead.&nbsp;

According to local reports, Yoon is anticipated to organise a dinner party in the presidential mansion where Korean barbecue would probably be served. Yoon may even prepare food for Kishida.

The Supreme Court of South Korea in 2018 ordered Japanese companies to pay compensation to those who were subjected to forced labour during the Korean War, angering Tokyo and leading to a deterioration in relations.

In recent years, economic issues have also become a source of tension between Japan and South Korea. In 2019, Japan imposed restrictions on the export of key materials used in the production of semiconductors to South Korea, citing national security concerns. This move was seen by many in South Korea as retaliation for the country's court rulings on compensation for forced labor during Japan's colonial rule.

Yoon, who assumed office last year, has attempted to put the past behind him. Earlier this year, he unveiled a proposal to recompense victims without assistance from Tokyo.

The leaders intended to have "candid exchanges" on this subject, Kishida said on Sunday.

The language of the bill states that acts such as "upskirting"&nbsp;(taking pictures up a girl's skirt unbeknownst to her) and secret filming of sexual acts will be prohibited.&nbsp;

The gropers, often called "chikan"&nbsp;in the local language, prey on women, especially in the famously crowded public transport system. For long, there had been demands from the public to bring a law making the offence punishable.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reports state that anyone found violating the law could face&nbsp;imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to&nbsp;$22,000 (Three&nbsp;million Japanese yen).

The bill, once passed, will be part of Japan's total overhaul of sex crimes. Reportedly, as part of the overhaul, the definition of rape will be expanded as well.&nbsp;

To avoid the menace of "upskirting", mobile phone manufacturers in the country have also installed audible shutter sounds on the devices.

According to police statistics, in 2010, there were 1,741 arrests in Japan with regard to illegal photographs of women. The number of arrests swelled three times to over 5,000 in 2021, signalling a grave problem. Some reports at the time&nbsp;claimed that the "perverts"&nbsp;who took the objectionable photos were "bored"&nbsp;amid the pandemic.&nbsp;

In March, several men photographed themselves upskirting and groping anime statues at a theme park in the country. The now-deleted posts showed the masked men touching characters from Studi Ghbili in a sexually suggestive way.

After the photos went viral,&nbsp;Hideaki Ōmura, governor of&nbsp;central Aichi prefecture, where Ghibli Park is located, issued a warning of "firm and strict"&nbsp;action against the offenders.&nbsp;A couple of weeks after the warning, the three men&nbsp;visited the prefectural office and apologised for their actions.&nbsp;

“I feel deep regret for having caused trouble and disgusting so many people. I will refrain from doing such foolish things in the future. I am truly sorry,” said one of the men.

Notably, Japan is not the only Asian country to have come up with serious rules regarding "upskirting".&nbsp;In South Korea, those convicted of photo voyeurism face a fine of up to $7,500 (10&nbsp;million won) or a maximum prison sentence of five years.

Meanwhile, in Singapore, the convicted face up to two years in jail, fines, caning or a combination of penalties. If the victims are younger than 14 years old, the convicted face&nbsp;mandatory imprisonment, plus fines and caning.

The report said that the Kakogawa City Council had placed this piano inside the area's main railway station in November last year, and authorities hoped that residents would respond to a global trend which saw a huge rise in street pianos.&nbsp;

Kakogawa has been inspired by the public art movement of placing instruments in shared places, such as transport hubs and shopping centres.&nbsp;

But the city council was disappointed by the disregard for rules.&nbsp;

Many commuters (at the railway station) were unhappy with the confiscation of the piano. “I have an electronic piano at home, so I like to practise here,” an unidentified man in his 60s said and pointed out that most people observed the rules, as per the report.&nbsp;

Abortion is authorised only in the presence of certain conditions, outlined by the provision of the Eugenic Protection Law which was implemented in 1948. Artificial abortion is a penal offence.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It is legal for up to 22 weeks but consent is usually required from a spouse or partner, and until now a surgical procedure had been the only option.

News agency AFP reported that the ministry said in a notification to healthcare officials on Friday it had approved the drug made by British pharmaceutical company Linepharma. For approval in the nation in December 2021, the drugmaker filed its product, a two-step treatment of mifepristone and misoprostol.&nbsp;

In Japan, abortion has remained a matter of contention. Many countries, including France, which approved the abortion pill in 1988, and the United States, where it has been available since 2000, have similar medications.&nbsp;

The pill's clearance to stop pregnancies up to nine weeks follows a ministry panel's approval, which was delayed for a month due to thousands of public comments.&nbsp;

According to the national broadcaster NHK, the whole cost of the abortion pill and a medical consultation would be roughly $700. Notably, the public health insurance does not cover abortions. Surgical abortions can range between 100,000 and 200,000 yen.

In recent weeks, mifepristone has been at the centre of a high-profile US court fight. The United States Supreme Court has temporarily safeguarded access to the widely used abortion medication, halting lower court orders that would have outlawed or severely limited its distribution.&nbsp;

Campaigners in Japan are also advocating for increased availability of the morning-after pill, which prevents pregnancy and the emergency contraception in the country is currently unavailable without a doctor's prescription. It is also the only medicine that must be administered in front of a chemist to prevent it from being sold on the black market.&nbsp;

The government announced after a secondary panel analysed 12,000 public comments submitted online and the final permission from the health minister is forthcoming, although the timetable is unknown.

Japan authorities faced criticism for trailing behind other countries to approve abortion pills as they have been used for around 30 years in other countries, with over 80 countries having access to them.&nbsp;

Japan's public safety chief is drawing flak for his remarks that he continued to savour his eel rice bowl even after he was told that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had a narrow escape from a pipe bomb attack.

Koichi Tani, chair of National Public Safety Commission for Kishida's cabinet, said in a governing party gathering on Tuesday (April 25) that he was eating the local delicacy for lunch when the phone rang.

“I was told that we can eat delicious unagi (eel) rice bowl there, and I was really looking forward to it," Tani told party lawmakers. “Just as I was going to dig into it, I got a call from the National Police Agency saying something was thrown at the prime minister in Wakayama," Tani said, as quoted by AP.

“But I fully savoured and finished … my unadon (eel rice bowl),” he said,

Tani was eating eel rice in Shimanto area in southwestern prefecture of Kochi when Kishida was attacked in Wakayama. Tani was 250 kilometres away from the&nbsp;place of attack.

“With the G-7 summit coming up, I'm aware of the importance of protecting Japan’s public safety, and I will carry out my duty with a sense of alertness,” Tani added.

And this is an issue that requires decision. ... In terms of persuasion, I believe I did my best."&nbsp;

In Ashiya, Japan, voters have made national history by electing a 26-year-old and making him the youngest-ever mayor in the nation. With more than 46 per cent votes, Ryosuke Takashima defeated three rivals including the incumbent in the Ashiya mayoral election on April 23.

Following his win, Takashima said that his age doesn't matter, rather what he can achieve does.

"My youth means I have more energy to be more active than anyone else," he said.

A Harvard graduate, the newly elected mayor broke all previous records. Before him, as per the Japan Association of City Mayors, the youngest mayor was Kotaro Shishida,&nbsp;who back in 1994 was elected as the mayor of Musashimurayama in western Tokyo.

He has many achievements under his belt. As per Asahi, he studied environmental engineering at Harvard University and since 2016 has been the head of Ryugaku Fellowship - a non-profit organisation that helps students who plan on studying abroad.

Takashima's campaign in Ashiya city of Hyogo Prefecture was focused on providing more support for young families, free medical care for people under the age of 18, and better English education programmes.

United State's proposal for the Group of Seven (G7) countries to ban all exports to Russia was met with resistance, ahead of a summit of the bloc. As per a report, the European Union (EU) and Japan pushed back against the proposal during negotiations ahead of a summit of the world's most advanced economies.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday (April 26) that 2023 summit of leaders of the Quad countries will take place in Sydney on May 24. This will be the third in-person meeting of the leaders of Australia, the US, India and Japan.

"I am honoured to host the first ever Quad Leaders' Summit in Australia in Sydney," Albanese said.

"The Quad is committed to supporting an open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific that is respectful of sovereignty and ensures security and growth for all."

The Australian prime minister said that during the summit, the quad countries will discuss how the grouping can work alongside partners and other groupings like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Pacific Islands Forum in order to boost coopeartion in the region.

Quad, an informal grouping of nations which includes India, the US, Japan and Australia does not have a military aspect. But it is widely seen as US-led attempt to counter rapidly rising Chinese influence in political, commercial as well as military arena especially in the Indo-Pacific.

China has in past expressed its displeasure at the grouping.

Australia, long thought to be away from global geopolitical hotspots has increasingly found itself at odds with China as the latter had taken concrete steps to make headway into region previously considered Australia's backyard. Chinese attempts to woo island nations in the Pacific Ocean have not gone unnoticed in Australia. Chinese military ships have increased their forays in waters near Australia in recent past as well.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Chief of the Defence Force Angus Campbell have said in recent days that Australian forces need to be capable of responding to potential adversaries whose weapons are faster, can strike farther and are more precise than in the past.

Changing that equation is crucial to the future of Australia's military, they said.

In an address to the National Press Club on Monday, Wong said the region should not be reduced to a binary competition between the United States and China; Australia wanted to work with other middle-sized countries, including those in Southeast Asia, to deter aggression, she said.

"America is central to balancing a multipolar region... We cannot just leave it to the U.S.," she said.

The in-person Quad summit will take place next month amid strained relations between China and the US. The two nations have been sparring on varirty on issues ranging from Ukraine war, tech security to Taiwan and Chinese apps like TikTok.

Australia's defence review prioritises India and Japan amidst China's military build-up

Japan ordered its military Saturday to prepare to shoot down a North Korean ballistic missile after Pyongyang said this week it was ready to launch its first military spy satellite.

Placing the satellite into orbit would require a long-range projectile, which North Korea is banned from launching because the United Nations views such exercises as tests of ballistic missile technology.

On Saturday Japanese minister Yasukazu Hamada told the country's Self-Defense Forces "there is a possibility of ordering destructive measures against ballistic missiles and others", according to a statement from the ministry of defence.

Hamada instructed troops to "implement measures necessary to limit damage in the event of a ballistic missile falling".

In 2012 and 2016, North Korea tested ballistic missiles that Pyongyang called satellite launches.

Both missiles flew over the Okinawa region.

Japanese media reported Saturday that the defence ministry issued the same preparation orders in 2012.

Pyongyang has not provided a launch date, with leader Kim Jong Un only saying the satellite will be sent up "at the planned date".

On Tuesday G7 foreign ministers meeting in Japan demanded North Korea refrain from any further ballistic missile tests following a spate of launches this year.

The group of rich nations also warned Pyongyang against carrying out an expected nuclear weapons test and said there would be a "robust" response if it did not comply.

A week ago Pyongyang said it had successfully tested a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile, hailing it as a breakthrough for the country's nuclear counterattack capabilities.
