Rashid attacked all the top leaders of Jammu and Kashmir and BJP and promised the people that if they give him a chance and voted for his candidates, he would change the political story of Jammu and Kashmir.

"It’s after five and half years to be back in the valley. I am happy but I am also feeling a lot of pressure too. I don’t think I have done anything extraordinary, but I stayed on my conviction. I can’t even explain what I went through for the last five and half years, but the love I got from people today made me forget everything. I want the rights of the people to be fulfilled. I was not allowed any mode of communication because I refused to support the BJP," he said.

Rashid continued, "It’s sad that Omar Abdullah made such statements like it’s the victory of Islamists. Now he says the BJP wants to divide the votes in Kashmir. He did not speak about people for the last five years and that’s why he had to beg by taking his cap off in Ganderbal."

The other political parties are campaigning aggressively as well. The Congress and National Conference presidents held a joint rally in south Kashmir's Anantnag district. Dr Farooq Abdullah and Malikkarjun Kharge were present at the rally/ Congress President Kharge took a direct dig at the BJP and Modi government.

"They used to say 400 paar, where are those 400 seats? They stopped at 240, if we had 20 more seats then all these people would have been in jail," Kharge said.

Meanwhile, the BJP has also taken a strong stance against the Engineer Rashid and regional political parties like PDP and NC.

Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav said, “This rank separatist, in jail for the last 5 years under UAPA for indulging in anti-India activities, is out on bail to further vitiate Valley politics. Look at the language…anti-Modi rants, restoring Art 370, freeing terrorists from jails…no different from what Omar or Mehbooba or even others like Lone, of NC, PDP or PC – and the Gupkar Gang – is saying. He wants to defeat Modi’s dream of Naya Kashmir. We accept the challenge. Naya Kashmir’s March will go on unrelenting."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Srinagar on September 19. According to the party, he will address a mega BJP rally at Sher-e-Kashmir Park, Srinagar. Around 20,000 to 30,000 party workers are expected to attend the rally.

"Now Article 370 has become a thing of the past, it is not a part of the constitution. I have read the agenda of NC and seen the silent support of NC, but I want to make it clear, that article 370 is a thing of past and it'll never return again, we will not let that happen. Article 370 was the thing that gave weapons and stones in the hands of the youth It's the spirit of separatism that used to force youth towards terrorism," Amit Shah added.

Whenever the history of J&K will be written, these ten years after 2014 will be marked as a golden period for the state." Amit Shah said.

While weeks ahead of the crucial assembly elections in India's Jammu and Kashmir the political landscape has witnessed a fresh twist former members of the band Jamaat E Islami party have started filing their nominations for the upcoming polls in the union territory.

J&K assembly elections: Former JEI members to contest as independent

In a significant development in Jammu and Kashmir, the former Jamaat-e-Islami members have started filing their nominations for the upcoming assembly elections in the Union Territory. Jamaat Islami was banned by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019 for five years and the ban was extended for five more years in 2024.

Jamaat-e-Islami has been against the electoral process in Jammu and Kashmir for the last three decades. But it seems that after the ban, the Jamaat leaders have decided to fight the upcoming assembly elections as independent candidates in the Valley.

Several former Jamaat leaders and members have started filing nominations in the upcoming elections. Three Jamaat leaders filed the nominations for the first phase of assembly elections to be held on September 18.

"I was working with the government and since 2008 I became a part of politics and with regard to geopolitics. We need to see Kashmir from the prism of GeoPolitics and that's how I got interested in it. Jamaat Islami has a very important role and looking at the situation, we as Kashmiris have to think about the future and how to make it bright. Past has not given or yielded anything, and we lost what we even had so we need to work for our future. I was associated with Jamaat Islami from 2002 to 2014," said Talat Majeed, Pulwama.

In South Kashmir's Kulgam District, Nazir Ahmad Bhat, a former member of Jamaat-e-Islami filed his nomination for the Devsar Assembly constituency.

NC announces pre-poll alliance with Congress for upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir

With the announcement of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the political parties in the Union Territory have already stepped up the poll preparations.

The Election Commission of India announced Assembly Elections for Jammu and Kashmir will start on September 18. The election will be held in three phases, and the counting will be held on October 8.

The political circles are once again abuzz in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as assembly elections will be held in the UT after 10 long years. Within few days of the announcement, many political leaders have already switched sides and joined other political parties. Senior Leader Taj Mohiuddin has once again joined Congress party and left Ghulam Nabi Azad's DPAP. Former Minister and APNI Party leader has also quit and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Meanwhile, the Vice President of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Omar Abdullah released the Party Manifesto in Srinagar on Monday. The main issue in the manifesto still remains the revocation of Article 370 and 35a. It also talks about restoring statehood.

''Our manifesto was not prepared while sitting in office but took in consideration the opinions of people. It focusses on Restoration of our Political and Legal Status which is article 370 and 35a. Also about restoring the Statehood. We will also repeal all the new laws that have been introduced due to which our lands are being given away. It also speaks about the people languishing in jails, we will give amnesty to all political prisoners and repeal the PSA," said Omar Abdullah, former CM of Jammu and Kashmir.

The manifesto also speaks about advocating for Indo-Pak dialogue as the best method to resolve ongoing conflicts. It also says that the JKNC is strongly committed to the dignified return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits. Not only that, NC also announced freebies for the citizens, including free education for all till university, and 200 units of electricity for every household.

''Electricity prices are going up and water is not available everywhere, we will address this as well. We will give 200 units free electricity. ‎Free education will be given to the students of J&K upto University level. We will favour the India-Pakistan talks and support the CBM’s that were put at the time of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh,'' said Omar.

None of the political parties have announced any alliance, but Congress and National Conference will soon discuss it. The National Conference has said that they will speak to the higher ups in Congress regarding a pre-poll alliance, while Congress leaders in Srinagar have said that they are open to ally with like-minded parties. Congress state president Tariq Qarra said in Srinagar that they will talk to regional political parties regarding an alliance.

''As far as the alliance, we are open to like-minded people or the parties to forge an alliance with them. NC has directly approached the party leadership in Delhi for a pre-poll alliance. If parties are of the idea that we have to defeat divisive forces and BJP, they will definitely ally with the Congress. And we will definitely succeed,” said Qarra.

Political arena in Jammu & Kashmir abuzz after announcement of assembly elections

In a major development, the central government has appointed IPS officer Nalin Prabhat as the special director general (SDG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The Ministry of Home Affairs in an order announced his appointment as SDG and DGP effective October 1, 2024, following the clearance of his inter-cadre deputation from Andhra Pradesh to the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre by the Cabinet Appointment Committee on Wednesday (Aug 14).

Prabhat has major experience in counter-terrorism operations across the country. He has previously served as the director general of the National Security Guard (NSG) and as additional director general in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir. Prabhat, a 1992-batch IPS officer, will take charge from RR Swain upon his retirement next month. Until then, he will serve as the SDG of Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Prabhat has vast service experience in the UT, particularly during its peak terrorism period. He gained widespread recognition for his leadership during the 2009 Lal Chowk anti-fidayeen operation, where he successfully neutralised terrorists who had attacked the Punjab Hotel in Srinagar, preventing further destruction in the heart of the city.

As he steps into the role of DGP, Prabhat will face considerable challenges, especially given a recent surge in terrorism in the Jammu region. His extensive experience in handling high-stakes situations will be crucial as he navigates these pressing issues.

In parallel, preparations for assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are ramping up. The Election Commission has recently reviewed electoral arrangements following a record voter turnout in the Lok Sabha elections.

The electoral process is expected to last about a month, with the number of assembly seats increasing from 83 to 90 after a recent delimitation exercise, not accounting for those seats designated for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. As Prabhat takes on this pivotal role, all eyes will be on his strategies and initiatives to address the complex security landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.

India: Nalin Prabhat joins as new special director general of Jammu Kashmir Police

The Indian Army's ability to deal with counter-terrorist infiltration attempts refutes recent allegations by former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah, who in a controversial remark, suggested collusion between Indian security forces and terrorists.

The remarks contradict official data which shows that in 2019, J&K witnessed 219 infiltration attempts by terrorists, a number that drastically fell to 48 in 2023 and fell further in 2024.

A senior military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "Our data clearly shows a downward trend in infiltration attempts, reflecting the significant strides we've made in tightening security and improving our counter-infiltration strategies."

Indian Army's capabilities have improved significantly, especially in countering infiltration. In 2017, only one infiltration attempt was successfully intercepted, and by 2023, this number rose to 17.

"The increase in thwarted infiltration attempts is a clear indication that our security apparatus is not only holding the line but actively disrupting terrorist movements before they can pose a serious threat," said an official in New Delhi.

The decline in successful infiltrations is part of a larger strategy by the Indian Army to bolster border security by integrating advanced surveillance technologies and increasing troop deployments at the Line of Control (LOC).

Farooq Abdullah's remarks, following a deadly encounter in Kokernag, South Kashmir, where two Indian soldiers were killed, have been widely slammed.

Meanwhile, Lt Gen Rakesh Sharma (retd), former adjutant general of the Indian Army, added, "Politicians must maintain the sanctity and honour of security forces who perform in the direst of circumstances, countering infiltration and ensuring peace in Jammu and Kashmir."

The Indian Army has yet to officially respond to Abdullah's allegations but the security officials stress the importance of basing public discourse on verified data.

"Public statements on security matters should be grounded in facts, not speculation or politically motivated rhetoric," said a senior military official.

J&K terror: Army, CRPF and J&K Police carrying out search operations in Kashmir

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has courted controversy after claiming that the Indian Army was in cahoots with the terrorists in the region.

Abdullah was addressing his National Conference (NC) workers in the Kishtwar district when he made the remark.

“Despite massive troop deployment on our borders, which could arguably be the largest in the world, terrorists continue to infiltrate into Indian territory. Yeh sab mile hue hain hamari barbadi ke liye (They are colluding to destroy us),” said Abdullah.

“We believed and had faith in them (the establishment) for ten years, but they said one thing and did the other. Our educated children protested and faced batons,” he said, adding that he cannot explain the atrocities inflicted on NC workers.

Abdullah's statement came a day after two Indian Army soldiers and a civilian lost their lives in a gunfight with the Pakistan-sponsored terrorists in the Anantnag district.

India's poll body to visit Jammu and Kashmir, parties hopeful of election dates announcement

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government on Friday (Aug 2) sacked the director general of India's Border Security Force (BSF) and his deputy "with immediate effect", and sent the duo to their state cadres.

DG Nitin Agrawal, a 1989-batch Kerala cadre officer, had taken charge of the BSF in June last year. Meanwhile, Deputy Special DG (West) YB Khurania, from the 1990 batch of the Odisha cadre, was leading the operations of the force along the Line of Control (LoC), the de-facto border between India and Pakistan.

Why the duo has been sacked?

The government order didn't state why the two officers were removed from their posts but sources quoted by NDTV cited constant infiltration from the international border as one of the major factors.

Some reports hinted that the BSF chief didn't cooperate with the government over critical matters.

"Lack of command and control within the force and lack of coordination with other sister agencies led to his repatriation," a senior source was quoted as saying by NDTV.

"The J&K administration is following a model to build film-shooting infrastructure on the lines of European countries so that J&K becomes a global film destination soon. In the last five years, we have succeeded in reviving the Cinema culture in J&K. We had rolled out a film policy in 2021, but there were some gaps and loopholes. Today, we have launched the New Film Policy 2024 where all previous gaps have been filled. The new policy entails Single window cell that will make film shooting easier for directors and producers interested in shooting in J&K. There will be ease in giving permissions for shooting and also hiring local talent as well," said Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

In the past five years, there has been an effort to reconnect J&K with the culture of cinema and theatre. Bollywood filmmakers have been visiting the valley often to shoot their movies, ads, and short films.

Bollywood filmmaker, Madhur Bhandarkar, lauded the Lt governor-led UT administration for the progressive film policy and initiatives to create a vibrant film ecosystem in J&K.

"It's a great initiative by the government of Jammu and Kashmir. And I feel such an initiative was very essential for the filmmakers across India. The single window clearance is a great way of attracting filmmakers. The locals get a lot of chances if films are shot in these locations, and I see a lot of talent here. This will be beneficial for the talent," said Madhur Bhandarkar.

J&K Film Conclave offers a platform for collaboration, exchanging ideas, and showcasing talent. The initiative aspires to build a sustainable and thriving film ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir. The conclave is also hosting a series of workshops on filmmaking, besides insightful panel discussions with film personalities.

"I am very happy. This is one of my dreams. Any activity around films is my dream. I started the Kashmir world film festival, and I have been fighting for the opening of cinema halls in Kashmir. But one is not enough but we want more. We also want film makers from across India and abroad to come and shoot here. It is an open studio, and every place is great to shoot. There is one window permission for filmmakers and its great," said Mushtaq Ali Khan, festival director of the Kashmir World Film Festival and filmmaker.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also felicitated the winners of the Naya Jammu Kashmir Short Film Making Competition.
