Italy's Data Protection Agency on Thursday launched an investigation into the AI chatbot of Chinese startup DeepSeek and said it had blocked it from processing Italian users' data.
The GPDP said it had decided to act after receiving "completely insufficient" answers to its questions about the firm's use of personal data.
In a statement, it said it had ordered "urgently and with immediate effect the restriction of the processing of data of Italian users by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence and Beijing DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence, the Chinese companies that provide the DeepSeek chatbot service".
At the same time, the authority had opened an investigation, it said.

"The restriction measure, designed to protect the data of Italian users, follows the communication from the companies received today, the contents of which were deemed completely insufficient," it said.
On Tuesday, the agency announced it had raised questions with DeepSeek about how personal data was collected, from which sources and to what end, and where it was stored.
"Contrary to what was observed by the authority, the companies declared they do not operate in Italy and that European legislation does not apply to them," the statement on Thursday said.
The authority had also asked what kind of information was used to train DeepSeek's AI system and, if the data was scraped from the internet, to clarify how users of the service are informed about the processing of their data.
Based out of the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou -- sometimes known as "China's Silicon Valley" -- DeepSeek sparked panic on Wall Street this week with its powerful new chatbot developed at a fraction of the cost of its competitors.

The Italian watchdog in December fined OpenAI 15 million euros ($15.6 million) over the use of personal data by its popular ChatGPT chatbot, but the US tech firm said it would appeal.
The investigation began in March 2023 when the GPDP temporarily blocked ChatGPT in Italy over privacy concerns, becoming the first Western country to take such action.

<h2>&ldquo;Understandably human motives&rdquo;&nbsp;</h2>
Despite the severity of his crime, the Modena Court of Assizes has sentenced Montefusco to 30 years in prison instead of life imprisonment for the double femicide, as requested by prosecutors.
The court justified its decision by citing Montefusco's lack of a criminal record and the &ldquo;nefarious family dynamics&rdquo; that allegedly &ldquo;triggered&rdquo; him into committing the murders. Judges concluded that he would not have carried out the killings &ldquo;if not driven by the nefarious family dynamics that had been triggered over time,&rdquo; reports DailyMail.

<h2>Court cites emotional 'blackout'</h2>
In a 200-page ruling, the judges detailed how ongoing family tensions and repeated confrontations had led Montefusco to experience &ldquo;profound discomfort, humiliation, and enormous frustration.&rdquo;
The court described his mental state as an &ldquo;emotional and existential blackout&rdquo; after his daughter repeatedly told him to leave the family home.
It &ldquo;caused in his soul, as he himself has repeatedly underlined, that emotional and existential blackout that would have led him to run to get the gun&rdquo;.

Reportedly, during this moment of rage, Montefusco grabbed a firearm that was only metres away and shot both his wife and daughter. Despite previous threats of violence, the judges ruled out aggravating factors such as premeditation and cruelty, which led to the lighter sentence.
According to reports, Montefusco had previously threatened to kill the pair.&nbsp;

A pro-Russia hacking group Saturday (Dec 28) claimed responsibility for a cyberattack targeting at least ten official websites in Italy, including those belonging to the foreign ministry and two airports in Milan city. The group, named Noname057(16), in a statement on Telegram said Italy&rsquo;s &lsquo;Russophobes&rsquo; got a &ldquo;well deserved cyber response&rdquo;.

Earlier, Italy&rsquo;s cyber security agency said that the attack left the targeted websites out of service for some time. A spokesperson for the agency said Russia-backed hackers deployed the so-called "Distributed Denial of Service" (DDoS) attack. DDoS involves feeding a network with massive amounts of data traffic in less time which ends up paralysing it.
The agency added that it quickly offered assistance to targeted websites and mitigated the overall affect within two hours.
A company that manages Milan's Linate and Malpensa airports in a statement said that the cyber attack caused no flight disruptions on any of the airports. It said the travellers could still use the mobile application to access necessary services.
<h2>625% increase in cyber attacks</h2>
Earlier this year, Italy&rsquo;s National Cybersecurity Agency reported a staggering 625 per cent increase in DDoS-type cyber attacks compared to the previous year. According to a report by Financial Times, the NoName057(16) group was also involved in targeting key Italian institutions in 2024, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni&rsquo;s website and those of the Ministries of Infrastructure and Enterprise.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday (Dec 18) took a defensive stance on her friendship with billionaire Elon Musk and informed Italian lawmakers it will not influence her in areas in which the latter has economic interests.
“I can be a friend of Elon Musk and at the same time the head of the first Italian government that made a new law to regulate private activity in space,’’ said Meloni, while replying to questions in a customary parliamentary discussion held before the European Union summit scheduled for this week in Brussels.
Meloni took a jibe at her predecessors and said that previous Italian leaders “who thought they had a good relationship, even a friendship, with a foreign leader, they had to slavishly follow what the others did.”

In a shocking incident in the Mediterranean, an 11-year-old girl from Sierra Leone has been found alive after surviving three days in the sea. Her migrant boat, carrying 45 people, sank off the coast of Lampedusa, leaving her as the only survivor, according to the Compass Collective rescue team

The 11-year-old girl was spotted by chance when the crew of the rescue vessel Trotamar III, operated by Compass Collective, heard her weak calls for help&nbsp;despite the engine running. In the pitch-black waters, the crew manoeuvred to reach her. "It was an incredible coincidence that we heard the child’s voice despite the engine running," said Matthias Wiedenlübbert, the skipper of Trotamar III.

After locating the girl, the crew immediately alerted rescue services in Rome and transported her to the rescue team in Lampedusa for further care.

<h2 dir="ltr">Sole survivor found after hours of searching</h2>

The young girl was found holding to two inner tubes and a life vest in stormy seas. "She had no drinking water or food with her, and although she was suffering from hypothermia, she was responsive and alert," Compass Collective stated.

The migrant boat had departed from Sfax, Tunisia, but bad weather and a relentless storm delayed rescue efforts. The girl told rescuers she had last seen two others in the water two days earlier but had not spotted them since.

<h2 dir="ltr">24,000+ migrant deaths recorded in Mediterranean since 2014</h2>

The Mediterranean's central route, linking Tunisia, Libya, Italy, and Malta, is one of the world’s deadliest for migrants. Since 2014, over 24,300 people have been reported dead or missing, with the true toll likely much higher. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 30,900 people have disappeared or died in the Mediterranean, many deaths going unreported.

The Trotamar III, a 13-metre rescue vessel, typically handles larger-scale rescue operations but responded swiftly to save the girl. Since its launch in August 2023, the vessel has rescued 1,653 people in distress at sea.

<h2>Rescue team's hopes fade amid storm</h2>

Despite searching for other survivors, Wiedenlübbert said: “After the storm with 2.5-metre-high waves, it was hopeless.”

Nicola Dell’Arciprete, head of UNICEF Italy, shared his concern: “Our thoughts go to the girl, the sole survivor of another Mediterranean shipwreck. Every life matters. Safe routes and search and rescue are needed.”

The migrant boat had departed from Sfax, Tunisia, but bad weather and a relentless storm delayed rescue efforts. The girl told rescuers she had last seen two others in the water two days earlier but had not spotted them since. 24,000+ migrant deaths recorded in Mediterranean since 2014 The Mediterranean's central route, linking Tunisia, Libya, Italy, and Malta, is one of the world’s deadliest for migrants. A fire at a fuel depot run by Italian energy company Eni near Florence on Monday killed two people and left three missing, a local official said.

"Sadly two people lost their lives, nine people are injured and three people are missing" after the fire at the Calenzano plant, a spokeswoman for the Florence prefecture told AFP.

In a statement, Eni said the fire had been confined to the loading shelter area and had not reached any fuel tanks.

Eugenio Giani, president of the central Tuscany region that includes Calenzano, confirmed the fire was contained&nbsp;and added that experts were now assessing potential pollution, including on nearby waterways.

People within five kilometres (three miles) of the plant have been told to stay home and close their doors and windows.

Giani posted a video online showing a huge plume of black smoke emerging from an area of the plant, which is linked to the nearby Livorno refinery.

"The fire was quickly contained and the column of smoke rose significantly due to the difference in temperature between the smoke and the atmosphere," he said later.

In a statement, Eni said: "This morning a fire broke out at the fuel depot in Calenzano and that firefighters are working to put out the flames which are confined to the loading shelter area and do not affect the tanks in any way."

Investigations were underway into the cause of fire, it added.

Italy's minister of Enterprises Adolfo Urso, who is on an India visit, has said that India&nbsp;and Italy are working together in space and the nuclear domains. Italy will soon nominate a space attache at its consulate in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru.&nbsp;

Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal, Minister Adolfo who is also minister for "Made in Italy" said, "We believe that Italy and India, who already have major roles in space, could cooperate on what is most important and meaningful for its economic and civil consequences."

He was also hopeful about the development of the India-Middle East Europe corridor, which the Italians also call the "Cotton Route". The corridor was announced at the Delhi G20 summit and aims to link India with Europe via West Asia through a series of infrastructure projects.&nbsp;

The comment&nbsp;comes a month after India and Italy unveiled the Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025-2029 after the meeting of PM Modi and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni at the G20 Brazil summit.&nbsp;

The action plan calls for regular political dialogue, economic cooperation, connectivity, defence, and expansion of cooperation between the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Sidhant Sibal: Italy's view on India Middle East Europe Corridor?

Adolfo Urso: &nbsp;It is essential and crucial for Italy and India both, representing two natural docks for Europe and for the wider Indo-Pacific continent that will be able to get access through Italy and India. It is central for goods, for maritime traffic&nbsp;but central also to connecting through optical fiber wires and spreading information and data. It is the economy of the future.&nbsp;

Sidhant Sibal: But do you see challenges, with the war in Gaza, Syria?

Adolfo Urso: We obviously work as G7 President&nbsp;towards de-escalation aiming at turning down tensions to get back to co-exist. It is with no doubt of paramount importance in those territories but for us all too. In order to build with them through the cotton route, the route of development, peace and coexistence.

Earth observation is crucial for the territory's governance and the exploration of space, first on the moon and then on Mars. Also to understand what best can be used for the development of our planet. We can and we have to do it together because we believe that this could be the way forward towards development.

Sidhant Sibal: And are you looking at nuclear cooperation?

Adolfo Urso: Italy, the Italian government has decided to revive the nuclear journey in a major way, characterized by Italian science to build the new plants, the small reactors, the fourth generation nuclear reactors, such plants on an industrial scale which are compatible, easy to move. This for sure can be done in synergy with India that plans to use nuclear energy production in order to build the energy of the future. This is safe, clean, compatible and industrially advanced.&nbsp;

European leaders are panicking over the historic victory of Republican leader Donald Trump in the 2024 United States presidential elections, with calls growing for economic overhaul and reforms to boost growth. As European leaders gather in Hungary’s Budapest to discuss pressing economic issues these days, Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has warned it was high time the 27-nation bloc found a “balance”.

“Don’t ask what the US can do for you, ask what Europe should do for itself,” the Italian leader said. “Europe must find a balance. We know what we have to do,” she added.

The European Union has ample reasons to be worried over a Trump presidency in the US, amid fears over his policies concerning Ukraine war, NATO and trade protectionism. Trump previously warned the EU will have to pay “a big price” for not allowing wider market access to the US companies.

Earlier, former Italian prime minister and European Central Bank chief, Mario Draghi, also warned in a report that the 27-nation bloc faced a “slow and agonising decline” if it failed&nbsp;to act fast.

In a details report, Draghi proposed to inject a massive €800 billion&nbsp;investment booster shot into the European economy in a year, almost equal to five per cent of the EU’s total annual economic output. To implement this proposal, the EU may have to rely on more borrowings, something that remains a red line for a few economies.

“We have postponed too many important decisions in order to find consensus [among EU member states],” Draghi warned while talking to reporters. “That consensus did not come, and as a result we have suffered lower economic growth, and now stagnation,” he added.

Additionally, fears of instability within the EU bloc have grown as political crises weigh down two of the biggest European economies: France and Germany. Germany’s coalition government collapsed Wednesday (Nov 6) whereas Emmanuel Macron, the French president, continues to function without a parliamentary majority.
