Lufthansa Milan Insider: Wrapping up an unforgettable Milan journey

Italy's cabinet, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is looking to the country's banks and insurers for financing its budget under new plans aimed at delivering giveaways pledged to voters.

“As we promised, there will be no new taxes for citizens,” Meloni said in a post on X on Tuesday. “€3.5 billion from banks and insurance companies will be allocated to healthcare and the most vulnerable.”

She didn't disclose how that money would be raised or over what period. The Treasury confirmed that the financial sector will be chipping in to pay for this expenditure but said nothing further. Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has scheduled a press conference for Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Rome.

Ministers signed the budget into approval in a late meeting on Tuesday, just in time to meet a deadline to submit the plan for European Union scrutiny. Further measures have to be taken and presented before parliament for approval.

It has a gross value of €30 billion ($33 billion) for 2025, wrapping weeks of government deliberation over how to balance the promise of speeding up Italy's deficit reduction with the political necessity of fulfilling costly election commitments.

Those promises include a reduction in the tax wedge — the difference between what workers cost employers and what is paid out to them — and support for low-income households and small businesses.

In addition, the government is also increasing defence spending and investing additional funds into healthcare.

The announcement reflects one of the objectives of Giorgetti — a member of the League, which is a junior partner in the governing coalition — to produce a budget reaping "sacrifices from everyone," a budget in which every part of society would have a share, as he pointed out early this month during an interview with Bloomberg.

'It is unacceptable': Italian PM Meloni tells Netanyahu after attack on UN peacekeepers

A 94th-minute winner by Vangelis Pavlidis gave Greece a 2-1 victory on Thursday against England in a Nations League clash overshadowed by the death of Greek player George Baldock on the eve of the game, while Italy were held to a draw by Belgium. Greek striker Pavlidis netted a brace, either side of a late Jude Bellingham goal, to send Greece top of Group B2.

Greece's first-ever victory against England came in an emotionally-charged evening at Wembley, which started with a minute's silence prior to kick-off for Baldock, an English-born Greece international who drowned in his swimming pool in Athens on Wednesday.

"It was a really special day for us because of George. We are people and it's a special night because of him," Pavlidis told ITV. "A difficult moment for us because George was part of the team. Special guy. We have to play for him and it doesn't matter the score today. We gave everything for him."

The Greeks took a deserved lead in the 49th minute when Pavlidis danced through flimsy defending in the England box, before driving the ball past Jordan Pickford.

The visitors had three disallowed goals in the match -- the last of which came just minutes before Real Madrid's Bellingham hammered in an 87th-minute equaliser for England.

However, Greece were not to be denied a third win in three Nations League matches as England failed to clear the danger in their area and Pavlidis took full advantage and drilled home a late winner.

In Group A2, Italy and Belgium played out an eventful 2-2 draw in Rome. The Italians raced into the lead inside 60 seconds when Andrea Cambiaso got his first international goal by bundling home from close range.

Mateo Retegui doubled the hosts' lead on 24 minutes, sweeping home with his left foot after a spilled save.

"There are episodes that can change a game, like their goal immediately after we went down to ten men," said Italy coach Luciano Spalletti.
Italian defender Marco Curto has been banned for 10 matches for racially abusing South Korean forward Hwang Hee-chan while playing for Como against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a pre-season friendly in July.
According to the experts, the portrait is identified to be of Dora Maar, the French Surrealist photographer, painter, and poet, and has been attributed to Picasso. Initial results on Hannah Lynch's body, whose examinations were carried out on Saturday, were inconclusive, the source told Reuters, only ruling out any traumas or wounds as the cause of death and leaving open the possibility she either ran out of oxygen or drowned. The bodies of the dead, except for the cook, were found in cabins on the left-hand side of the 56-metre (184-feet) vessel, where the trapped passengers may have tried to search for remaining bubbles of air, the head of Palermo's Fire Brigade said last month. Fifteen people survived, including Lynch's wife, whose company owned the Bayesian, and the yacht's captain. Initial examinations of the Canadian-Antiguan onboard chef Recaldo Thomas indicated he died by drowning, the investigative source said on Saturday. Sicily yacht tragedy: Last missing person recovered, authorities exploring manslaughter charges

Divers returned to the sea off Sicily Friday in search of UK tycoon Mike Lynch's teenage daughter, the last person missing after his family's luxury yacht sank, killing the businessman and five others.

Italy's fire service said dives resumed in the early hours, continuing days of complex operations to recover bodies after the superyacht sank during a sudden storm before dawn on Monday.

"The long and delicate search operations for the last missing person continue," the service said on social media Friday.

Lynch, a celebrated tech entrepreneur and investor, had invited friends and family onto the sailing boat Bayesian to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case.

Also read | Sicily yacht sinking: Timeline of events that led to the disaster; search for missing continues

But as the 56-metre (185-feet) British-flagged yacht was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo, it was struck by a waterspout -- akin to a mini-tornado.

It sank within minutes.

Heartbroken

Fifteen people were rescued, but one body, believed to be of the yacht's chef, was found a few hours later.

Six people, including Lynch and his daughter Hannah, were reportedly missing.

The 18-year-old had just finished her end of school exams and had a place to study English literature at Oxford University, according to UK media reports.

Friends of the teenager said she was kind and clever, as well as a staunch feminist, according to The Times newspaper.

Italian authorities launched a major search operation involving specialist divers, boats from several emergency services and helicopters.

The bodies of Lynch's lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were recovered on Wednesday.

Lynch's body was pulled up a day later.

Movillo's firm Clifford Chance paid tribute to the lawyer and his wife, saying all were "heartbroken at the tragic passing... and still coming to terms with this terrible loss".

The Bloomer family described their "unimaginable grief", saying Jonathan and Judy had been together for five decades.

"Our only comfort is that they are still together now," the family said.

Many questions remain about why the yacht sank, and so quickly, when other boats nearby were unaffected.

On Thursday the head of the company which built the boat said the tragedy could have been avoided.

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," said Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the Perini Navi company that built Bayesian in 2008.

Bad weather forecast

He told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed.

"Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice in a trap," he said.

Lynch, 59, was acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The Bayesian, owned by his family, boasted a 75-metre mast, the tallest aluminium sailing mast in the world, according to the Charter World website.

Divers returned to the sea off Sicily Friday in search of UK tycoon Mike Lynch's teenage daughter, the last person missing after his family's luxury yacht sank, killing the businessman and five others.

It sank within minutes. Heartbroken Fifteen people were rescued, but one body, believed to be of the yacht's chef, was found a few hours later. Bad weather forecast He told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed.
