An Iron Age-era statuette has been discovered at the bottom of a lake in Italy. The clay figurine was found during ongoing work at the underwater archaeological site of Gran Carro di Bolsena in Aiola, Italy. The statue was fished out of the volcanic Lake Bolsena and is an unfinished clay figure of a woman.

It dates back to sometime between the 10th and 9th centuries BC. According to a translated statement by Italy's Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape, the clay statuette is so fresh that it “still shows the marks of the fingerprints” of its maker. The figure was likely covered with some sort of cloth years back as there is an imprint of a plot of fabric under its chest.

Experts say that such pieces were usually kept in places where the remains of the dead were stored. However, the site where divers found the statuette was once a residential area. But this does not mean that it could not have been used for rituals, albeit of a domestic nature. The Italian Cultural Property Restoration team worked with government divers to ensure that the statuette was brought out of the waters safely.

Historical significance of Gran Carro di Bolsena

It wasn't until 1991 that Gran Carro di Bolsena became a site of archaeological interest. Researchers at the time found that the pile of shapeless stones that form Aiola are linked to hot thermal water springs. Wooden poles and ceramic fragments were found southwest of the lake and were found to be tied to the early Iron Age. Springs throw out gas and minerals as hot as 40°C and might have formed at least four other rock formations, which might be a little smaller than Aiola.

Another find in 2020 led experts to determine that Aiola was an integral part of the village during the early Iron Age. This was a mound of earth found under the stones in 2020 in the area where wood and ceramic originate. Coins and pots from the Constantinian era later found prove people lived at the site until late in the Roman Empire.

Archaeologists unsealed a 2,000-year-old sarcophagus during the investigation of the "Tomb of Cerberus". The discovery also included a remarkably well-preserved body wrapped in a shroud.

The archaeologists found the chamber tomb within cultivated land situated in the municipality of Giugliano in Campania, near Naples, Italy in 2023. Ever since, they have been examining the tomb with microcameras.

The research team was led by Dr Simona Formola, who found the "supine inhumed" body. The remains belonged to someone who was in an "excellent state of conservation", a translated statement noted.

Archaeologists said that the remains have been preserved by plant-based creams that were applied over the bodies before they were sealed. The climatic conditions of the burial chamber could have aided the process of that person's preservation. The shroud was also mineralised.

The mummified person was accompanied by several objects, including ointment jars and other things which are often used to clean the body during burial.

The perfect preservation suggests that the person could have been related to the individual for whom the tomb was being constructed. However, the research team has been examining the preserved body to understand whether or not the individual had a privileged upbringing.

Last year, archaeologists were led to the unsealed tomb during excavations at the necropolis border. They came across many frescoes across the untouched chamber's ceilings. The walls were found in pristine condition.

A stunning fresco of Cerberus, the three-headed hound from Greek mythology believed to be the protector of the underworld, graced the tomb's entrance. It is said that the multiheaded beast keeps the dead from escaping from hell's vengeance.

In a statement, superintendent Mariano Nuzzo said: "In recent months, in fact, laboratory analyses conducted on samples taken from the inhumations and the depositional beds have returned a considerable amount of data on the treatment of the deceased’s body and the funerary ritual carried out, significantly enriching the panorama of our knowledge."

The experts are conducting DNA analysis to identify the mummified human remains with funding from Italy's Ministry of Culture.

To commemorate the 50 anniversary of Tignanello, Maserati has created a bespoke version of their latest electric vehicle, the GranCabrio Folgore. This custom-made car, exclusively designed for Marchesi Antinori, represents the pinnacle of Maserati's current all-electric production. The unique vehicle is set to be auctioned on July 14 in California at Festival Napa Valley's Arts for All Gala, one of the most prestigious arts charity events in the United States.

This collaboration brings together two iconic Italian brands- Maserati, celebrating its 110 anniversary, and Marchesi Antinori, a family-owned winery with over 600 years of history spanning 26 generations. Both companies embody the essence of Italian excellence, innovation, and tradition.
Maserati, known for its pioneering spirit in the automotive industry, shares a kindred passion with Marchesi Antinori and Tignanello in their respective fields.

The design inspiration for this special edition GranCabrio Folgore draws from the vineyard, symbolising roots and territory. Both Maserati and Marchesi Antinori place great importance on their local heritage, which significantly enhances the value of their products. The car's design pays homage to the cellar where wine is crafted and incorporates elements from the iconic Tignanello label, which has remained unchanged for half a century.

Maserati's designers conducted extensive research into the unique history of Tignanello to create a vehicle that truly embodies the characteristics and values of both Marchesi Antinori and the wine itself. The result is a car that serves as a moving tribute to the prestigious Tignanello vineyard and the wine's 50-year legacy, featuring carefully selected colours, innovative materials, and refined artisanal details.

The exterior of the GranCabrio Folgore Tignanello showcases a custom-created body colour called Terra di Tignanello. This chestnut hue is inspired by the soil of the vineyard, enhanced with coppery burgundy tones reminiscent of Tignanello's characteristic wine barrels. The paint has a rich, metallic finish that evokes the ambiance of the estate and winery. Complementing this unique color are matte black rims, glossy black brake calipers, and copper-colored emblems, including a glossy copper Maserati logo set against a glossy background. The soft top of the convertible is finished in black.

The interior of the vehicle is where the most romantic and detailed tributes to Tignanello can be found. The seats feature leather embellished with a multi-material silver and burgundy ribbed weave made from Vegea, an innovative fabric derived from vineyards. This material, used for the first time in a Maserati, mimics the pattern of vine rows on the Tignanello hill, interspersed with Albarese rocks. The fabric has the look and feel of leather, adding to the car's luxurious ambiance.

Other interior details include dark briar wood panels with laser-engraved text describing the creation of Tignanello. The headrests feature elegant embroidery that combines the Maserati Trident with Tignanello's signature sun emblem, a long-standing feature of the wine's label. This sun symbol is also laser-engraved on the central tunnel, along with the dates 1971-2021, marking the first and current vintages of Tignanello and celebrating its 50-year history.

Klaus Busse, Maserati's Head of Design, emphasised that this collaboration exemplifies the essence of their Fuoriserie customisation program, which aims to create bespoke experiences for Maserati customers. He noted that telling a story of Italian excellence through their designs is a source of pride and constant inspiration for the Maserati team.

Piero Antinori expressed the family's pride in this collaboration, highlighting the shared values of continuous improvement and pursuit of quality that unite Maserati and Marchesi Antinori. He emphasised on the uniqueness of this model, inspired by Tignanello's 50 anniversary, and its strong identity and recognisability, mirroring the characteristics of their renowned wine.

The GranCabrio Folgore itself is a groundbreaking vehicle, being the first all-electric convertible in the luxury segment and the fastest of its kind on the market. It combines high performance with Maserati's signature comfort and elegance, featuring a battery system based on 800V technology developed with insights from Formula E racing.

Italian PM Meloni pays homage to Indian farm worker killed in Latina, condemns 'inhumane act'

Thousands of Indian farm labourers urged an end to "slavery" in Italy on Tuesday after the gruesome death of a worker shone a light on the brutal exploitation of undocumented migrants.

Satnam Singh, 31, who had been working without legal papers, died last week after his arm was sliced off by a machine. The farmer he was working for dumped him by the road, along with his severed limb.

"He was thrown out like a dog. There is exploitation every day, we suffer it every day, it must end now," said Gurmukh Singh, head of the Indian community in the Lazio region of central Italy.

"We come here to work, not to die," he told AFP.

Children held up colourful signs reading "Justice for Satnam Singh" as the procession snaked through Latina, a city in a rural area south of Rome that is home to tens of thousands of Indian migrant workers.

Indians have worked in the Agro Pontino -- the Pontine Marshes -- since the mid-1980s, harvesting pumpkins, leeks, beans and tomatoes, and working on flower farms or in buffalo mozzarella production.

Singh's death is being investigated, but it has sparked a wider debate in Italy over how to tackle systemic abuses in the agriculture sector, where use of undocumented workers and their abuse by farmers or gangmasters is rife.

"Satnam died in one day, I die every day. Because I too am a labour victim," said Parambar Singh, whose eye was seriously hurt in a work accident.

"My boss said he couldn't take me to hospital because I didn't have a contract," said the 33-year-old, who has struggled to work since.

"I have been waiting 10 months for justice," he said.

The workers get paid an average of 20 euros ($21) a day for up to 14 hours labour, according to the Osservatorio Placido Rizzotto, which analyses working conditions in the agriculture industry.

Far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has sought to reduce the number of undocumented migrants to Italy, while increasing pathways for legal migration for non-EU workers to tackle labour shortages.

But according to the Confagricoltura Agribusiness Association, only around 30 per cent of workers given a visa actually travel to Italy, meaning there are never enough labourers to meet farmers' needs.

This month, Meloni said Italy's visa system was being exploited by organised crime groups to smuggle in illegal migrants.

She condemned the circumstances of Singh's death, saying they were "inhumane acts that do not belong to the Italian people".

"I hope that this barbarism will be harshly punished," she told her cabinet ministers last week.
Italy's financial police identified nearly 60,000 undocumented workers from January 2023 to June 2024.

But Italy's largest trade union CGIL estimates that as many as 230,000 people -- over a quarter of the country's seasonal agricultural workers -- do not have a contract.

While some are Italian, most are undocumented foreigners.

Female workers fare particularly badly, earning even less than their male counterparts and in some cases suffering sexual exploitation, it says.

"We all need regular job contracts, not to be trapped in this slavery," said Kaur Akveer, a 37-year-old who was part of a group of women in colourful saris marching behind the community leaders.
