Israel-Palestine war: Israeli ministers call to 'resettle' Gaza's Palestinians

Trouble continues to mount for Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu - in the latest setback back home - Israel's Supreme Court has struck down a controversial law passed by the Netanyahu administration.

Israel: Supreme Court strikesdown key provision of judicial overhaul

Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar imposed a ban on New Year celebrations in the country in a bid to express solidarity with the people of Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Kakar called on the people of his country to show solidarity with the Palestinians and display solemnity and humility on New Year.

"Keeping in mind the seriously concerning situation in Palestine and to show solidarity with our Palestinian brothers and sisters, there will be a strict ban by the government on holding any kind of event for New Year," he said in a brief address.

He further said that Israeli forces "crossed all limits of violence and injustice", claiming the lives of over 21,000 Palestinians and killing nearly 9,000 children in its counter-offensive.

"The whole Pakistani nation and the Muslim world are in a sheer state of anguish over the massacre of innocent children and genocide of unarmed Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank."

He added that his country had sent two aid packages to Palestine with the third one being prepared.

He also said that Pakistan was in talks with Jordan and Egypt to ensure timely aid to Palestinians and evacuation of those wounded in Gaza.

Kakar said Pakistan was making all necessary efforts to highlight the plight of the Palestinians on various global forums and would continue to do so in future.

A report released on Thursday (Dec 28) by the UN demanded an immediate end to the use of military weapons during law enforcement operations as well as an end to arbitrary detention and ill-treatment of Palestinians, and the lifting of discriminatory movement restrictions.

"The use of military tactics and weapons in law enforcement contexts, the use of unnecessary or disproportionate force, and the enforcement of broad, arbitrary and discriminatory movement restrictions that affect Palestinians are extremely troubling," UN rights chief Volker Turk said in a statement.

"The intensity of the violence and repression is something that has not been seen in years."

The report looked at the human rights situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since October 7.

Pakistan caretaker PM Kakar announces ban on New Year celebrations. Here's why

Iran reportedly carried out the execution of four individuals on Friday (Dec 29), including a woman, whom it accused of being "saboteurs" with alleged ties to Israel's Mossad intelligence service. The announcement was made by the Iranian Mizan news agency, which is affiliated with the judiciary.

This latest development brings the total number of executions to five in a shadowy conflict between Iran and Israel that has spanned decades. Iran has consistently accused Israel of orchestrating attacks on its nuclear program, charges that have neither been confirmed nor denied by the Israeli government.

According to the Mizan news agency, the four executed individuals—Vafa Hanareh, Aram Omari, Rahman Parhazo, and Nasim Namazi—were described as the principal convicts in a case involving a total of 10 offenders. The agency did not clarify whether the remaining individuals would also face execution.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency revealed that the accused had confessed to collaborating with a Mossad officer in neighboring Turkey, identified by the names Tony and Arash, in a video clip posted by the official IRNA news agency.

The confessed actions included kidnappings, threats, arson on vehicles and homes, and theft of mobile phones from unspecified targets.

The group was reportedly under surveillance by Iranian intelligence for at least four months, starting around January 2022, until their arrest in May of the same year, the IRNA news agency claimed.

The video clip suggested that the individuals were transferred to Iran from a neighboring country.

The current execution follows a similar event in mid-December when Iran executed a fifth individual accused of being a Mossad agent in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan. The situation underscores the ongoing tensions and mutual accusations between the two nations in a long-standing shadow war.

Israel's Supreme Court on Monday (Jan 1) ruled against a key component of the government's controversial legal overhaul. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had passed the highly disputed law, which challenged the powers of the judiciary.

The law was part of a broader judicial overhaul and his coalition of partners which caused a deep rift in the nation as it led to mass protests that abated amid the ongoing war in Gaza, which started after Hamas militants launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7.

During the protests, tens of thousands of demonstrators had rallied weekly against the government reforms.

The statement by the Supreme Court said eight of 15 justices had ruled against an amendment passed by parliament in July which scraps the "reasonableness" clause, used by the court to overturn government decisions which are deemed unconstitutional.

The decision has not been welcomed by the government as Justice Minister Yariv Levin slammed the top court for "taking all powers".

Levin, who is the architect of the judicial overhaul, said on Telegram that in their ruling, "judges are taking into their hands all the powers, which in a democratic regime are divided in a balanced way between the three branches" of government. "It takes away from millions of citizens their voice," Levin added.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich slammed that decision, calling it "extreme and divisive".

The new legislation brought before the court had removed one, but not all, of the tools the Supreme Court has for quashing government and ministers' decisions. It took away the court's ability to void such decisions that it deemed "unreasonable".

Twelve of 15 justices ruled that it was within the court's parameters to strike down quasi-constitutional "basic laws". A smaller majority of eight ruled to nullify this specific basic law, which the court said "causes severe and unprecedented harm to the core characteristics of Israel as a democratic state."
