Israel-Hezbollah War: IDF Chief Vows To Continue Pounding Hezbollah Sites In Lebanon

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak predicted that Israel is likely to launch a large-scale airstrike against Iran's oil industry and possibly a symbolic attack on a military target related to its nuclear programme, the Guardian reported, on Friday (Oct 4).

Barak said that there was no doubt that Israel would not retaliate against Iran's Tuesday attack with over 180 ballistic missiles.

“Israel has a compelling need, even an imperative, to respond. I think that no sovereign nation on Earth could fail to respond,” Barak said in an interview.

He further said that the model for the Israeli response could be seen in Sunday's reprisal airstrikes against Houthi-controlled air facilities, power plants and docks in the Yemeni port of Hodeidah. This comes a day after the Yemen-based militant group fired missiles aimed at Israel's international airport outside Tel Aviv.

“I think we might see something like that. It might be a massive attack, and it could be repeated more than once," the former prime minister told Guardian.

Barak has also served as defence minister, foreign minister and army chief of staff, in the past.

The former PM noted that there had also been suggestions that Israel should make use of this opportunity, in reprisal for the Iranian attack and launch attacks against Iran's nuclear facilities. However, he argued it would not significantly set back the Iranian programme.

Earlier on Thursday, United States President Joe Biden highlighted that there had been discussions in Washington about a possible Israeli attack on Iran's oil sector, however he did not give any details on whether the US would support such an assault.

During his tenure as defence minister, Barak was among Israel's most staunch advocates for bombing the Iranian nuclear facilities, trying and failing to convince former US Presidents George Bush and then Barack Obama, to contribute American military might to the campaign.

“There are some commentators and even some people within the defence establishment who raised the question: Why the hell not hit the nuclear military programme?” Barak said. “A little bit more than a decade ago, I was probably the most hawkish person in Israeli leadership arguing that it was worth considering very seriously, because there was an actual capability to delay them by several years."

“That’s not the case right now, because Iran is a de facto threshold country,” he argued. “They do not have yet a weapon – it may take them a year to have one, and even half a decade to have a small arsenal. Practically speaking, you cannot easily delay them in any significant manner.”

According to Barak, a significant Israeli military response to an Iranian missile attack is not unavoidable and justifiable, he argued that the drift to a regional war could have been avoided much earlier if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been open to a US-promoted plan to rally Arab support for a post-war Palestinian government in Gaza to replace Hamas.

Israel calls for evacuation in south Lebanon as it hits Hezbollah targets in Beirut suburbs

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Hezbollah leader Syyed Hassan Nasrallah to flee Lebanon days before he was killed in an Israeli strike and is now deeply worried about Israeli infiltration of senior government ranks in Tehran

Iran - Israel War: Iran's Khamenei warned Nasrallah of Israeli plot to kill him

Defence experts have voiced concerns about Britain's Armed Force's inability to defend Israel from Iranian ballistic missile attacks. They have highlighted that RAF Typhoon jets lack the necessary weapons to intercept missiles and attacks like the one launched by Tehran on Tuesday (Oct 1). Despite recent upgrades, the UK has been relegated to a supporting role in response to Iranian aggression; they say.

Underfunding to blame?

Former defence secretary Sir Ben Wallace, according to the Telegraph, said that the Type-45 anti-missile destroyers would struggle. He also said that the Royal Navy's carrier strike groups do not have enough sailors to operate effectively in the war zone.

According to retired navy commander Tom Sharpe, "Our involvement [in the response to Iran] was underwhelming, and it's a reflection of 40 years of underfunding."

"Given what is going on in the Middle East and Russia, we need to expedite our ability to provide ballistic missile defence from our T45 destroyers."

The situation has underscored concerns about years of underfunding in the UK's military, which experts argue has diminished the country's global defence capabilities.

However, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Wednesday maintained that the armed forces remain ready and capable of shooting down cruise missiles and drones, but experts warn that on Tuesday they struggled to shoot down more advanced ballistic missiles.

Iran has built a significant stockpile of ballistic missiles, and its recent attacks on Israel have demonstrated the complexity of defending against these advanced weapons. While the US deployed advanced interceptors from its Navy to protect Israel, the UK was limited to monitoring and support roles during the latest Iranian missile barrage.

This has led to calls from former defence secretary Sir Ben Wallace and other experts for faster upgrades to the UK's missile defence systems and better equipping of its fighter jets, such as the F-35, which remains under-equipped due to delays in the US.

"Britain could have the capability to have a Type 45 permanently guarding our shores equipped with the upgraded Aster 30," said Sir Ben.

"We should with immediate effect seek to accelerate the already planned upgrade of their missile systems in light of what we are seeing in the Middle East," he added.

According to retired navy commander Tom Sharpe, "Our involvement [in the response to Iran] was underwhelming, and it's a reflection of 40 years of underfunding." The situation has underscored concerns about years of underfunding in the UK's military, which experts argue has diminished the country's global defence capabilities. "Britain could have the capability to have a Type 45 permanently guarding our shores equipped with the upgraded Aster 30," said Sir Ben. "We should with immediate effect seek to accelerate the already planned upgrade of their missile systems in light of what we are seeing in the Middle East," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

Karam, on Monday, called the US embassy in Beirut for help. However, she said that she was told to find a way out of the country by herself.

“Americans of Lebanese descent have been treated as lesser US citizens than Israeli US citizens. It is as if we don’t exist,” Karam told Al Jazeera.

Karam is from south Lebanon and is currently residing in the mountainous area east of Beirut, which has largely been spared from Israeli attacks. However, she said she is afraid of moving within the country or visiting her son in Beirut in the fear that Israel can bomb anywhere at any moment.
