US President Joe Biden is considering sending more defences for Israel as the Middle Eastern nation faces the triple threat of Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, according to a CNN report.

Biden held a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday (Aug 1) where he said the US would “support Israel’s defence against threats,” which would include “new defensive US military deployments".

"President Biden spoke today with Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel. The President reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security against all threats from Iran, including its proxy terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis," read the readout of the call.

Vice President Kamala Harris also joined the call as the duo called on Tel Aviv to de-escalate "broader tensions" in the region.

The statement did not detail what new deployments would be made but according to reports, the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group which includes the aircraft carrier, destroyers and other warships, could be moved into the Gulf of Aden or the Red Sea.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu said Israel remained on "very high alert" after its attacks against the adversaries sparked fears of a wider war on multiple fronts.

Haniyeh's killing: A calculated risk or strategic misstep?

Ismail Haniyeh, the Doha-based political bureau chief of Hamas, was assassinated using an explosive device that was smuggled into the guesthouse he was staying at in Tehran, Iran, according to a report in the New York Times.

The bomb was hidden nearly two months ago in the guesthouse, the report claimed, citing seven Middle Eastern officials, including two Iranians, and an American official. The bomb was detonated remotely after it was confirmed that Haniyeh was in the room at the guesthouse. The blast also killed one of Haniyeh's bodyguards.

Reports indicate that the blast was so powerful that it shook the building and shattered some windows causing the partial collapse of an exterior wall.

Notably, the guesthouse where Haniyeh met his fate was run and protected by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps which suggests it was a massive intelligence failure on the part of Tehran.

Israel-Hamas war: Hamas chief Haniyeh’s assassination in Iran fuels fears of wider war

The strained relationship between Iran and Israel hit another significant low when the Hamas chief and the man who had orchestrated the October 7 attacks - Ismail Haniyeh - was killed in "a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran" on July 30 (Tuesday).

Soon after Haniyeh was killed, Israeli Minister Amichay Eliyahu reacted to the news on X and said, "This is the right way to clean the world from this filth."

Haniyeh was the face of Hamas, a Palestinian terror group which is believed to have received massive support from Iran. The killing of the Hamas leader has led to diplomatic discomfiture because of his presence in Tehran and Iran's failure to protect him.

Haniyeh's death is likely to affect the ceasefire and hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas and has once again reminded the world of the ongoing covert war between Iran and Israel through proxies and targeted assassinations.

It has also raised questions over the safety of Iran's top leaders and the capability of Israel in targetting them.

In recent years, various high-profile assassinations and attacks have been carried out by Israel in Iran. In retaliation, Iran has also attacked Israel and launched missiles at it.

Let's look back at the attacks allegedly carried out by Israel on Iran:

On January 12, 2010, Tehran University's physics professor Masoud Ali Mohammadi lost his life after a remote-controlled bomb - which was planted on a motorcycle - went off. Iran's government called him a nuclear scientist but said he was not working for the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran. Iran blamed Israel and the United States for the killing.

Nearly 30,000 computers of at least 14 nuclear facilities were infected with the Stuxnet computer virus, which was detected at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in June 2010. The virus led to an explosion of engines in IR-1 centrifuges and at least 1,000 centrifuges installed at Natanz were destroyed.

Another virus, nicknamed ‘Stars,’ was detected by Iran’s cyber defence in April 2011 for damaging nuclear facilities.

Two gunmen killed an electrical engineer Darioush Rezaeinejad on July 23, 2011. He was reported to be working at a national security research facility. However, Iran denied Darioush's involvement in the nuclear programme.

Chemical engineering graduate Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan was killed by two people on a motorbike after they planted a bomb in his car on January 11, 2012, in northern Tehran. This time, Iran accepted that Ahmadi Roshan was the Natanz Uranium Enrichment facility's supervisor.

The “Wiper” malware was detected by Iran in April 2012 after it cleared all data from the hard drives of computers that belonged to the oil ministry and the National Iranian Oil Company.

Another virus, called ‘Flame,’ was found by Iran on May 9, 2012, after it hit government computers and made an attempt to steal data.

A warehouse - which contained a vast archive of nuclear programmes carried out in Iran - was raided by a Mossad team on January 31, 2018, in Tehran. In the raid, around 50,000 pages and 163 compact discs were smuggled out of the country. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on April 30 that they had some 100,000 “secret files that prove” Iran had a nuclear weapons programme.

Iran’s main nuclear enrichment site at Natanz faced extensive damage due to an explosion on July 2, 2020, and pushed the programme behind by months.

Iran’s leading nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was killed in an ambush in November 2020. Fakhrizadeh was killed using a remote-controlled machine gun.

Natanz nuclear plant was hit by an explosion on April 11, 2021, because of which the power supply for centrifuges was damaged. In the attack, “thousands of centrifuges” were destroyed, which led to the blackout.

Hundreds of drones kept at a base near Kermanshah in western Iran were reportedly destroyed by six Israeli quadcopters on February 14, 2022.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards commander Col. Sayad Khodayee was shot and killed by two assassins on motorcycles in May 2022.

The Parchin military complex in Tehran was hit by quadcopter suicide drones which were loaded with explosives on May 25, 2022.

The health of two Iranian scientists suddenly deteriorated and they died within days in May 2022. As per an Iranian official, an aeronautical engineer at a military research facility Ayoub Entezari and geologist Kamran Aghamolaei had symptoms of food poisoning.

The strained relationship between Iran and Israel hit another significant low when the Hamas chief and the man who had orchestrated the October 7 attacks - Ismail Haniyeh - was killed in "a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran" on July 30 (Tuesday). Soon after Haniyeh was killed, Israeli Minister Amichay Eliyahu reacted to the news on X and said, "This is the right way to clean the world from this filth." Haniyeh was the face of Hamas, a Palestinian terror group which is believed to have received massive support from Iran. Also Read: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh killed in a ' treacherous Zionist raid' in Tehran: IRGC confirms fatal attack In recent years, various high-profile assassinations and attacks have been carried out by Israel in Iran. In retaliation, Iran has also attacked Israel and launched missiles at it. Let's look back at the attacks allegedly carried out by Israel on Iran: On January 12, 2010, Tehran University's physics professor Masoud Ali Mohammadi lost his life after a remote-controlled bomb - which was planted on a motorcycle - went off. Watch: Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh assassinated: Palestine President says, 'It was a cowardly assassination' Iran’s leading nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was killed in an ambush in November 2020. A military facility in central Isfahan was hit by suicide drones laden with explosives which were reportedly sent by Israel’s Mossad on January 28, 2023.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave Sunday (Jul 28) his official endorsement of Masoud Pezeshkian as the Islamic Republic's ninth president, following snap elections won by the reformist camp's candidate.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave Sunday (Jul 28) his official endorsement of Masoud Pezeshkian as the Islamic Republic's ninth president, following snap elections won by the reformist camp's candidate. In a message read by the director of Khamenei's office, he said: "I endorse the vote (for) the wise, honest, popular and scholarly Mr Pezeshkian, and I am appointing him as the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran". The new reformist president is due to be sworn in before parliament on Tuesday. The endorsement ceremony was held in the capital Tehran in the presence of senior Iranian officials and foreign diplomats, and broadcast on state TV. It took place as banks and most government offices were ordered shut nationwide on Sunday to tackle an extreme heatwave. Following the event, acting president Mohammad Mokhber handed over official responsibilities to 69-year-old Pezeshkian. Later Sunday, Pezeshkian appointed reformist Mohammad Reza Aref, 72, as his first vice president, according to an announcement carried by state TV. Aref has represented Tehran in parliament and served as first vice president and communications minister under Iran's last reformist president Mohammad Khatami, who held office from 1997 to 2005. Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon and parliament member for the northwestern city of Tabriz since 2008, was Khatami's health minister. On July 5, the reformist candidate won a runoff race against the ultraconservative Saeed Jalili to replace president Ebrahim Raisi who died in a helicopter crash in May. Pezeshkian secured more than 16 million votes, or about 54 per cent of the roughly 30 million ballots cast. Turnout in the runoff election stood at 49.8 per cent, up from a record low of about 40 per cent in the first round, according to Iran's electoral authority. Jalili attended Sunday's ceremony, as did former moderate president Hassan Rouhani who had backed Pezeshkian's presidential bid along with Iran's main reformist coalition. Watch | Iran: Khamenei grants Pezeshkian Presidential powers × 'Bad attitude' Pezeshkian was the only candidate representing Iran's reformist camp allowed to stand in the election, for which all contenders were approved by the conservative-dominated Guardian Council. Iran's president is not head of state, and the ultimate authority rests with the supreme leader -- a post held by Khamenei for the last 35 years. Following Khamenei's official endorsement, Pezeshkian thanked the leader and the Iranian people, vowing to carry the "heavy burden" of the presidency. The election came against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions since the Gaza war began in early October, disputes with Western powers over Iran's nuclear programme and domestic discontent over the state of the sanctions-hit economy. During the ceremony, Khamenei urged the upcoming administration to form an "active and effective" response to regional developments, adding that diplomacy must prioritise neighbouring nations. "We have no intention to oppose some European countries. The reason I didn't mention European countries as a priority is that they have not treated us well for many years," he added. "If they don't have this bad attitude, then (ties with Europe) would be one of our priorities." On the campaign trail, Pezeshkian had pledged to try to revive a 2015 nuclear deal with the United States and other world powers, which imposed curbs on Iran's nuclear activity in return for sanctions relief. The deal collapsed in 2018 after Washington withdrew from it. Pezeshkian has in a recent article called for "constructive relations" with European countries, even though he accused them of reneging on commitments to mitigate the impact of US sanctions. The Biden administration was reportedly ready to resume nuclear talks with Iran. The report claims that an informed source in the Iranian Supreme National Security Council confirmed that US officials a few days ago on Tuesday said the Biden administration is willing to negotiate a return to the nuclear agreement concluded in 2015 after introducing minor amendments to it.

Report: US ready to resume nuclear talks with Iran

The Indian Navy's multi-role frigate, INS Brahmaputra, last week saw a major fire incident while undergoing scheduled repairs at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. A fire broke out onboard the vessel on the evening of July 21, which resulted in death of an Indian Naval personnel.

The fire was brought under control by the ship’s crew with assistance of firefighters from Naval Dockyard, Mumbai and other ships in harbour, by morning of 22 July.

A release from the Indian Navy while confirming the demise of Leading Seaman, Sitendra Singh said that the Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi has "directed that all actions by the Command and Naval Headquarters to make INS Brahmaputra seaworthy and combat ready are to be initiated immediately."

While it is being seen as a setback, such incidents have happened in the past, not only in India but globally. In July 2020, US Navy ship, USS Bonhomme Richard saw a catastrophic fire which took 4 days to extinguish, injuring 63 sailors while undergoing maintenance at Naval Base San Diego. The Ship was ultimately decommissioned in April 2021 and sold as scrap.

More recently, earlier this month, Iran's destroyer Sahand capsized over during repairs in Bandar Abbas. Iran's Tasnim News agency reported that the vessel which was being repaired at the dock lost its balance. Britain's HMS Prince of Wales has faced repeated failures and extended repair periods. The British warship is termed as the most advanced warship ever built for the British Navy.

Refits and repairs are inherently complex and risky operations and involves extensive welding, cutting, and electrical work. The activities, often conducted in harsh conditions without air conditioning, increase the risk of fires and incidents. Despite stringent safety protocols, incidents involving INS Brahmaputra highlight the dangers involved.

The incident involving INS Brahmaputra has happened at a time when the Indian Navy in its western seaboard units, has been operationally over stretched since late 2023. Deployed extensively in the Western Indian Ocean Region, the Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea for maritime security operations, combating piracy, and fulfilling diplomatic roles, the Indian Navy's operational tempo necessitates expedited refits, adding to pressures faced by dockyard agencies.

In response to the INS Brahmaputra incident, the Navy has announced a thorough inquiry to identify any shortcomings and conditions that may have contributed to the accident. The Navy, of course, has a history of resilience and learning from setbacks. Approximately eight years ago, INS Betwa, another ship of the same class (as of INS Brahmaputra), tipped over while undocking. When INS Betwa tipped over, many predicted its end, yet the ship recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and remains operational.
