Iran summoned the German ambassador on Wednesday after the closure of an Islamic centre in Hamburg over alleged support for Lebanon's Hezbollah and links to Iran. Watch in for more details!

Iran summons German Envoy over closure of an Islamic centre

The German government on Wednesday (July 24) officially banned the Hamburg-based Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH) and its affiliated sub-organisations after accusing the group of promoting the Iranian leadership's ideology and supporting Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group.

The ban coincided with police raids on 53 properties linked with individuals belonging to the now-banned organisations. As a result of the ban, four Shiite mosques in Germany will be closed, and the IZH's assets will be confiscated, according to the interior ministry.

Iran-Germany showdown begins over ban on Hamburg’s Islamic Centre, mosques' closure

Iran can produce fissile material for use in a nuclear weapon within "one or two weeks," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday (July 20). The details were shared just weeks after election of moderate President Masoud Pezeshkian.

While Pezeshkian has said he wants to end Iran's economic isolation and that he stands for reviving the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and global powers, Blinken disapproved Iranian president's assertion.

Blinken said that "what we have seen in the last weeks and months is an Iran that's actually moving forward" with its nuclear program.

In 2018, the United States under former President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal, which was designed to regulate Iran's atomic activities in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Speaking at an event Blinken blamed the collapse of the nuclear deal for the acceleration in Iran's capabilities.

Iran remains open to resuming negotiations with the United States to restore the nuclear agreement from which Washington under then President Donald Trump backed out in 2018, Iran's acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri-Kani told Newsweek in an interview published on Tuesday (Jul 16).

Bagheri-Kani's comments come ahead of his address to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York.

The United States, under Trump, withdrew from the nuclear accord between Iran and six world powers in 2018, which had restricted Tehran's nuclear program.

Despite indirect talks during the incumbent President Joe Biden's administration to revive the deal, negotiations have stalled. Iran remains part of the agreement but has reduced its commitments in response to US sanctions.

Newsweek quoted Bagheri-Kani as saying, "On the foreign policy front, Tehran remains open to resuming negotiations with Washington toward restoring mutual participation in a nuclear deal."

However, Bagheri-Kani also added that Iran will continue its focus on strengthening ties with China, Russia, and neighbouring countries. He further stated that Iran would call for greater action against Israel in the wake of the war in Gaza.

The Biden administration announced last week that the United States was not ready to resume nuclear talks with Iran under its new president.

Following the election of reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier in July, there was speculation that Tehran might pursue more serious talks with Washington. However, Pezeshkian has so far signalled the continuation of Iran's regional policies of projecting power.

Bagheri-Kani assumed the role of acting foreign minister after the death of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May. His trip to New York for the UNSC meeting is seen by some as a possible attempt to advance the issue of renewed talks, despite Iran not currently being a member of the council.

But after his election, he reaffirmed Tehran's support for militant proxy forces in the region and continued the insistence on the anti-western agenda of Raisi's days.

When asked about Iran's nuclear capabilities and whether the country might pursue weapons development, Bagheri-Kani reiterated Iran's commitment to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The intelligence officials of the United States have revealed that they had found evidence hinting at Iran plotting against the country's former president Donald Trump, as reported by CBS News. However, intelligence officials have not been able to find any ties between Iran's plotting and 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks' failed attempt to assassinate Trump. They have not been able to trace any foreign or domestic accomplice of Crook. When they gathered information regarding the threat, the National Security Council reached out to the Secret Service. Two Iranian naval personnel were killed on Sunday (July 7) when a 2,500-tonne cruiser capsized in port.

The Sahand warship, referred to as a destroyer in Iranian media, undergoing repairs, was inundated with water, leading to dramatic photos of it completely overturned in the bay. The massive 315-foot yacht was docked on Sunday (July 7) off the shore of Bandar Abbas, a city in southern Iran.

In a matter of minutes, only its side was visible above the surface as it tumbled onto its side.

"As Sahand was being repaired at the wharf, it lost its balance due to water ingress," the Iranian news agency Tasnim News said.

"Fortunately...the vessel is being returned to balance quickly," it added. There has been no official confirmation of reports in state media that two Navy sailors perished in the accident.

Named after a volcano, the Sahand is a member of Iran's Southern Fleet. When the US launched an intense effort in 2021 to stop it from mooring anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, it caused controversy.

The ship was suspected to be carrying out a weapons transfer on its route to Venezuela. It eventually veered off track and toward the West Coast of Africa.

It was preparing for an anti-piracy operation in the Indian Ocean when it became flooded while parked in the harbour.

The Sahand was recently deployed in response to continued attacks by the Iranian-backed proxy organisation the Houthis in the Red Sea.

The Sahand commanded a small fleet of Iranian ships in the region when the terror organisation attacked Western and Israeli ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Sahand is 12 years old, making it one of Iran's more recent naval vessels. According to initial accounts, the capsizing was caused by a "technical failure".
