Iran has suggested it could refrain from retaliating against Israel for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh's assassination if ceasefire talks in Gaza succeed this week. Watch in for more details!

Israel-Iran Crisis: Gaza truce only thing that may delay Iran's attack on Israel

US President Joe Biden has hinted that Iran could stop its 'avenging' plans against Israel if a Gaza ceasefire deal were to be reached. White House has been bracing for a potential retaliatory attack from Iran after Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed on its soil, allegedly by the Israeli side.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday (Aug 13) in New Orleans, Biden said "That's my expectation," regarding Tehran skipping the strikes against Tel Aviv.

“We’ll see what Iran does and we’ll see what happens if there is any attack. But I’m not giving up,” Biden added.

Biden's version was reiterated by US State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel during a briefing. Patel said a hostage and ceasefire deal would more “broadly, create conditions for diplomacy to get the region out of this cycle of violence".

Patel added that US State Secretary Antony Blinken was working round the clock with all parties involved to chalk out the deal that could end volatility in the region, albeit briefly.

“He [Blinken] has been working the phones for the past number of weeks, continuing to echo the same message, which is, we are close to getting the ceasefire deal across the finish line,” Patel said.

Washington playing double game?

Though the US remains in favour of a peace deal, the actions of the White House seemingly suggest otherwise.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Blinken would visit the Middle East to further the talks. However, on Tuesday, US media outlets claimed that the trip had been postponed due to 'uncertainty about the situation'.

Additionally, on the same day, Blinken announced $20 billion in fighter jets and other military equipment for Israel as the ongoing war with Gaza ceases to end with Iran threatening another conflict.

Blinken approved the sale of more than 50 F-15 jets and equipment worth nearly $19 billion including $774 million in tank cartridges, $60 million in explosive mortar cartridges and army vehicles worth $583 million.

However, the delivery of these weapons would not begin for years. According to reports, the F-15s would only be delivered in 2029, which indicates that the US military-industrial complex was lobbying hard for 'uncertainty' in the region.

Mike Burgess, the director-general of Australia's spy agency the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), on Sunday (Aug 11) accused some friendly nations of running foreign interference operations in the country.

Mike Burgess, the director-general of Australia's spy agency the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), on Sunday (Aug 11) accused some friendly nations of running foreign interference operations in the country. Burgess said their identities would surprise people if revealed. In an interview with public broadcaster ABC, Burgess said, "I can think of at least three or four that we've actually actively found involved in foreign interference in Australian diaspora communities." The spy agency chief declined to identify the countries involved. An accusation on Iran in 2023 Last year, the Australian government named Iran as having engaged in foreign interference. The government pointed out that Australian intelligence disrupted "individuals" conducting a surveillance operation on an Iranian-Australian's home. However, Burgess told ABC on Sunday that other countries were also secretly attempting to interfere in Australia's political system and its diaspora communities. "In diaspora communities, there are multiple countries that attempt to threaten and intimidate Australians living in this country. When we find it, we deal with it effectively," he said. Also watch | World Business Watch: Is Australia's limit on overseas student damaging? × Foreign interference, espionage and politically motivated violence are Australia's principal security concerns, Burgess added. A foreign interference plot foiled in 2022 In 2022, Burgess revealed ASIO had foiled a foreign interference plot by a wealthy person -- named only as "the puppeteer" -- with deep connections to a foreign government. "The puppeteer funnelled hundreds of thousands of dollars to an employee to try to influence an election," Burgess said then and refused to specify which election was targeted. On Sunday, he said that ASIO would be keeping an eye on such risks surrounding Australia's next general election, widely expected to be held next year. Earlier in August, the spy agency raised Australia's terrorism threat level to "probable", saying a homegrown rise in extreme ideologies had increased the likelihood of a violent act in the next 12 months. Morning news brief: Taiwan detects 22 Chinese aircraft; Iran's Guards aim to hit Israel; and more

A confrontation between Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian and some hardliners within the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has cast uncertainty over Iran's response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The Iranian government is at odds over how to retaliate against Israel following the killing of Haniyeh, according to The Telegraph.

The IRGC is reportedly pushing for a direct and severe missile strike on Tel Aviv and other major Israeli cities. However, President Pezeshkian, who assumed office just days before the assassination, is pushing back against this aggressive strategy.

Pezeshkian, known for his comparatively moderate stance and his electoral victory over a candidate backed by the IRGC, is advocating for a more calculated response.

The newly elected president is urging for strikes on alleged Mossad bases located outside Israel, particularly in neighbouring regions such as the Republic of Azerbaijan and Iraqi Kurdistan.

He argues that this approach would minimize the risk of a full-scale war with Israel, a conflict he believes could have severe consequences for Iran.

A close aide to President Pezeshkian told The Telegraph, "Pezeshkian fears that any direct attack on Israel would have serious consequences."

The aide reportedly further said that Pezeshkian has suggested notifying Azerbaijan and Iraqi Kurdistan before any strikes on alleged Israeli bases within their borders.

The IRGC, which has historically enjoyed significant autonomy and influence within the Iranian government, is reportedly undermining Pezeshkian's efforts to avoid a major confrontation with Israel.

An official from the IRGC told The Telegraph that the organisation is mainly dismissive of the president's more restrained approach. "The number one consideration is still striking Tel Aviv with Hezbollah and others at the same time," the official said as quoted by The Telegraph.

Pezeshkian faces a rising conflict in asserting his authority over the IRGC, which remains loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Another aide close to the president informs The Telegraph, The IRGC's push for a more aggressive response is seen as being "more about undermining his week-long presidency than addressing the humiliation they have suffered" from the assassination.

A close aide to President Pezeshkian told The Telegraph, "Pezeshkian fears that any direct attack on Israel would have serious consequences." Also read | Gaza war: Israel agrees to resume truce talks on Aug 15 at mediators' demand The aide reportedly further said that Pezeshkian has suggested notifying Azerbaijan and Iraqi Kurdistan before any strikes on alleged Israeli bases within their borders. The IRGC, which has historically enjoyed significant autonomy and influence within the Iranian government, is reportedly undermining Pezeshkian's efforts to avoid a major confrontation with Israel. The 46-year-old Asif Merchant plotted to assassinate current and former government officials across the political spectrum, including former President Donald Trump, multiple sources familiar with the investigation claim.

The plot was thwarted by law enforcement before any attack could be executed. Merchant is currently in federal custody in New York, according to the FBI press release.

Merchant was arrested on July 12 while he was preparing to leave US, prosecutors said, shortly after he met with alleged hitmen who he believed would carry the murders but were actually undercover law enforcement officers.

According to court documents, Merchant wanted to target individuals in US who are hurting Pakistan and the Muslim world, stating that “these are not just normal people.”

However the FBI believes it thwarted Merchant’s plan before any attack, and in the weeks since his arrest he has cooperated with investigators, according to US officials.

The officials stated that the Iranian government’s known threats against Trump prompted the FBI to share the intelligence with US Secret Service, leading to increased security protection for the former president.

The purported plot

Merchant arrived in New York City in April and intended to hire a hit man who would carry out assassinations against officials on US soil, prosecutors say.

Although Merchant is a Pakistani national, prosecutors say he has been staying in Iran for a long time with his family.

Once in the United States, Merchant allegedly reached out to someone he believed could help with the murder-for-hire plot. However, that person contacted the FBI and began cooperating with investigators as a confidential source.

Later that month, Merchant met with law enforcement officers working undercover as hitmen, according to prosecutors, and said he wanted them to kill a “political person in late August or early September.” Merchant allegedly arranged to pay them a $5,000 advance on the assassination.
