Tehran, Iran
Amid ongoing debate in Iran over strict hijab laws, the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Wednesday (Dec 18) dubbed women as ‘delicate flowers’. In a cryptic post on social media platform X, Khamenei, who is accused of curbing women's rights in the Shi’ite country, said women ‘need to be cared for’.
"A woman is a delicate flower and not a housemaid. A woman should be treated like a flower in the home. A flower needs to be cared for. Its freshness and sweet scent should be benefitted from and used to perfume the air," the post read.

The post came amidst ongoing protests in Iran by women over stringent hijab laws, triggered after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in 2022. The Iranian regime has attracted condemnations by human rights organisations and countries, like the US, who have called on Tehran to rein in its suppressive actions against ‘delicate flowers’.
<h2>Debate over hijab law</h2>
Iranian women are up in arms over a hijab law approved by the parliament in September 2023. The law aims to tighten restrictions on women's public attire and threaten action against businesses that fail to enforce the dress code. The bill was later okayed by the Guardian Council, a body empowered to vet legislation, but it has yet to be sent to the government for final approval.

Now, some lawmakers in Iran are urging the government to tone down the bill to give relief to protesting women. Shahram Dabiri, Iran's vice president for parliamentary affairs, earlier appealed to hold the bill and make necessary changes.
Since Amini died in 2022, Iran has doubled down on efforts to suppress the growing dissent of women. Khamenei also issued a directive to Iran’s so-called morality police to launch a campaign called 'Noor' or light, aimed at enforcing the compulsory hijab with fresh vigour.

Iran’s Khamenei dubs women as ‘delicate flowers’ amid growing calls to amend hijab bill

Tehran
Iranian lawmakers have asked to amend a bill that would impose tougher penalties on women who refuse to wear the mandatory hijab, local media reported on Wednesday.
The bill, already approved in parliament but not yet submitted to the government for final confirmation, has stirred a heated debate in Iran more than two years since nationwide protests erupted in part over the Islamic republic's dress code for women.
Shahram Dabiri, Iran's vice president for parliamentary affairs, has requested to hold off on sending the bill for approval, according to news agency ISNA.
"We requested that the law of chastity and hijab not be referred to the government," Dabiri was quoted by ISNA as saying, adding that "the parliament speaker requested an amendment to the bill."
Dabiri did not specify the nature of the amendment or provide a timeline for the process.
Lawmakers in September 2023 had approved the bill, officially the "Law on Supporting the Family through the Promotion of the Culture of Chastity and Hijab".
It has since won the approval of the Guardian Council, a body empowered to vet legislation.
The bill was initially meant to be referred to President Masoud Pezeshkian in December.
Pezeshkian, who could sign it into law, has expressed "reservations" about the text, citing numerous "ambiguities".
The 74-article bill tightens restrictions over women's public attire and threatens action against businesses who fail to enforce the dress code, according to the text carried by local media.

Damascus
Iran's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that its embassy in Syrian would reopen once the "necessary conditions" are met, after the diplomatic mission was vandalised following the ouster of Tehran ally Bashar al-Assad.
"The reopening of the embassy in Damascus requires preparations, the most important of which is ensuring the security and safety of the embassy and its staff," said foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei.
He added that work to that end will be pursued "as soon as the necessary conditions are provided", without offering a specific timeline.
The Iranian embassy in Damascus was ransacked after diplomats abandoned it as rebel forces seized the capital and ousted Assad.
Iran had supported Assad throughout Syria's civil war, which began in 2011.
Since his fall, Iran has sought to distance itself from the deposed leader, instead emphasising the history of friendship between the two countries.

"Our presence in Syria was fundamental and principled, and our withdrawal was responsible."
Baqaei also said that Iran's rival Israel, which has conducted hundreds of air strikes in Syria since Assad's fall and sent troops into a UN-patrolled buffer zone, "severely violated Syria's territorial integrity".

Iranian authorities announced on Tuesday (Nov. 19)&nbsp;that the Iranian woman who went viral for stripping down to her underwear at a Tehran university in an apparent anti-hijab protest&nbsp;has been freed and will not face charges.&nbsp;

The woman, identified as Ahoo Daryaei by BBC Persian, had earlier this month, in a dramatic act of defiance, stripped down to her underwear. The incident was captured on a video that went viral online.&nbsp;

<h2>A protest of note</h2>

According to a student movement organisation, Daryaei's on-campus protest unfolded after she reportedly clashed with security agents over not wearing a headscarf. In a moment of defiance, she removed her clothing. Shortly after, she was forcibly detained, with Iranian officials claiming she was "sick" and transferred her to a psychiatric ward.

Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir confirmed her release, stating, "Considering that she was sent to the hospital, and it was found that she was ill, she was handed over to her family... and no judicial case has been filed against her."

This move, presented as an act of compassion, has been labelled by activists as a strategy to delegitimise dissent by framing protesters as mentally ill.

Daryaei’s case is the latest example of what critics call the Iranian regime’s tactic of using mental health claims to undermine women’s rights activism. "This is how the Islamic Republic tries to discredit women, by questioning their mental health," said Azam Jangravi, an activist who fled Iran after her own anti-hijab protest in 2018.&nbsp;

Jangravi said her family has been facing pressure from Iranian authorities to declare her mentally ill: "My family didn’t do it, but many families under pressure do, thinking it’s the best way to protect their loved ones."

<h2>Iran to open a 'treatment clinic' for women who defy hijab laws?</h2>

If reports are to be believed, the Iranian government has plans to open a treatment clinic for women who defy&nbsp;the country's mandatory hijab laws. Such a type of centre has been named "hijab removal treatment clinic."

According to a report by The Guardian on Thursday (Nov. 14), the opening of this clinic was announced by Mehri Talebi Darestani, the head of the Women and Family Department of the Tehran Headquarters for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Darestani said that the clinic would offer scientific and psychological treatment for hijab removal. She said that the clinic would be focused on promoting "dignity, modesty, chastity, and hijab," and pointed out that attendance would be optional.

Iranian authorities announced on Tuesday (Nov. 19) that the Iranian woman who went viral for stripping down to her underwear at a Tehran university in an apparent anti-hijab protest has been freed and will not face charges.

Iranian authorities announced on Tuesday (Nov. 19) that the Iranian woman who went viral for stripping down to her underwear at a Tehran university in an apparent anti-hijab protest has been freed and will not face charges. The woman, identified as Ahoo Daryaei by BBC Persian, had earlier this month, in a dramatic act of defiance, stripped down to her underwear. The incident was captured on a video that went viral online. A protest of note According to a student movement organisation, Daryaei's on-campus protest unfolded after she reportedly clashed with security agents over not wearing a headscarf. In a moment of defiance, she removed her clothing. Shortly after, she was forcibly detained, with Iranian officials claiming she was "sick" and transferred her to a psychiatric ward. Also read | Iranian woman arrested for stripping to underwear subjected to ‘torture, chemical substance’ Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir confirmed her release, stating, "Considering that she was sent to the hospital, and it was found that she was ill, she was handed over to her family... and no judicial case has been filed against her." This move, presented as an act of compassion, has been labelled by activists as a strategy to delegitimise dissent by framing protesters as mentally ill. Daryaei’s case is the latest example of what critics call the Iranian regime’s tactic of using mental health claims to undermine women’s rights activism. An Iranian man faced execution for the second time months after surviving a previous attempt that had been stopped around half a minute in, as per Iran Human Rights (IHR), a Norway-based NGO which tracks executions in Iran.

An Iranian man faced execution for the second time months after surviving a previous attempt that had been stopped around half a minute in, as per Iran Human Rights (IHR), a Norway-based NGO which tracks executions in Iran. According to IHR, 26-year-old Ahmad Alizadeh was arrested and sentenced to death in October 2018 on a murder charge, a crime he denied committing. The first attempt to execute Ahmad Alizadeh was carried out on April 27 at Ghezel Hesar prison in Karaj, near Tehran. During this execution, he was hanged for 28 seconds before the victim’s family shouted "forgiveness," which led officials to bring him down. Also read: Israeli hostage calls for pressure on Netanyahu government Afterwards, prison staff attempted CPR on his "lifeless" body, successfully reviving him and the first execution was called off, said IHR. Under Iran’s sharia law, the victim’s family has the right to either forgive or demand financial compensation from the family of the person who committed the murder, known as "blood money." As per the activists, many families are unable to pay the amount demanded, which can result in the execution proceeding. Without a blood money agreement, Alizadeh remained on death row. This week, on Wednesday (Nov 13) morning, authorities executed him again in the same prison, according to IHR. "Ahmad Alizadeh, a talented student, was hanged for the second time on charges of murder, which he denied and claimed he confessed to under torture," IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said, who condemned Iran’s "execution machine of the Iranian regime." Also read: Top UN official describes Gaza as 'wasteland of rubble' Amiry-Moghaddam previously said, "In addition to the inhumanity of the death penalty, and the lack of a fair trial in this case, Ahmad Alizadeh experienced this cruel and humiliating punishment once, and his re-execution is a crime according to all international standards." Activists argue that Iran uses executions to intimidate its population, particularly following the protests that challenged the government from 2022 to 2023. In 2024, Iran saw a sharp increase in executions, with IHR reporting at least 166 in October alone, marking the highest monthly count since the NGO began tracking executions in 2007. At least five members of Iran's security forces were killed Sunday in a "terror attack" in the restive southeast, where authorities have been conducting operations against rebels, local media reported.

The Fars news agency reported that in a "terror attack in Saravan county, in the south of the Sistan-Baluchistan province, five members of the security forces were killed".

Sistan-Baluchistan borders both Afghanistan and Pakistan, and is one of Iran's most impoverished provinces. It is one of the few mainly Sunni Muslim provinces in Shiite-dominated Iran.

For years it has faced unrest involving drug-smuggling gangs, rebels from the Baluchi minority and Sunni extremists.

Fars said that after the attack in Saravan, "units stationed in the region were quickly deployed to pursue the criminals".

Iranian forces launched a major operation in the area after an attack on October 26 killed 10 police officers.

That attack was later claimed by the Pakistan-based Sunni jihadist group Jaish al-Adl (Arabic for Army of Justice).

Local media reported that those behind the October attack have been killed in the current security operation.

Some 15 militants have been reported killed in Sistan-Baluchistan province since the October attack, including three on Sunday, state television said.

It also said more than 30 suspects have been arrested.

A young Iranian woman who was detained for stripping down to underwear to mark a protest may have been tortured, given electric shocks and beaten by authorities, human rights organisations have warned. The woman, whose identity remains unknown to date, was earlier transferred to a psychiatric hospital. Now Amnesty International (AI) has claimed it has evidence that Iranian officials subjected the woman to torture and even chemical substances.

Earlier, the authorities labelled her ‘mentally unstable’ and transferred her to a psychiatric institution. Amnesty said the woman was faced with an “alarming situation.”

Iran on Wednesday (Nov. 6) downplayed the outcome of the US presidential election, stating that "it does not matter" who becomes the next American president, after Donald Trump declared his victory.

Iran on Wednesday (Nov. 6) downplayed the outcome of the US presidential election, stating that "it does not matter" who becomes the next American president, after Donald Trump declared his victory. In Tehran, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani addressed reporters, stressing that Iran’s “general policies” remain steady. "The US elections are not really our business. Our policies are steady and don't change based on individuals. We made the necessary predictions before and there will not be change in people's livelihoods," Mohajerani said, as reported by the Tasnim news agency. Iran’s currency falls to record low against the dollar Meanwhile, Iran’s currency, the rial, fell to a record low against the dollar on Wednesday following Trump's re-election, marking potential new challenges for Iran amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Traders in Tehran reported the rial trading at 703,000 to the dollar, though the rate could vary throughout the day. Iran’s Central Bank might again introduce more foreign currency into the market to stabilise the rate, as it has done before. US-Iran ties during Trump's presidency Trump, who served as president from 2017 to 2021, was known for his tough stance on Iran. During his first term, Trump reintroduced sanctions on Iran in 2018 after withdrawing from a 2015 nuclear agreement that had eased economic restrictions on Iran in return for limits on its nuclear programme. Trump also ordered the targeted killing of Qassem Soleimani, one of Iran's top military officials and a key figure in the country's hierarchy. Soleimani, head of the IRGC's Quds Force, was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020, along with a senior Iraqi commander. In September, while speaking in New York, Trump mentioned he was open to resuming discussions for a new nuclear agreement. “We have to make a deal because the consequences are impossible. We have to make a deal,” he stated. The re-imposition of US sanctions in 2018 severely affected Iran's oil exports, reducing government revenues and pushing Iran towards difficult economic measures like increasing taxes and running large budget deficits, keeping inflation close to 40% annually. US election 'not really our business,' says Iran as its currency rial hits record low post-Trump win

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who emphasised the need for peace in West Asia and the role that India could play in de-escalating the conflict given its good relations with all the parties, amid heightened tension between Iran and Israel.

The two leaders, who met on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan, also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in key areas, including Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

"Had a very good meeting with the President of Iran, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian. We reviewed the full range of relations between our countries. We also discussed ways to deepen ties in futuristic sectors," Modi wrote on X in both English and Persian.

This was their first meeting after Pezeshkian became president in July following his victory in snap elections. Pezeshkian succeeded President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.

The two leaders had a "fruitful discussion," Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told a media briefing here.

"Both the leaders also discussed the situation in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi expressed his deep concern over the escalating conflict and reiterated India's call for the protection of civilians and the prevention of harm to civilians. He emphasised the need for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate the tensions," Misri said.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated President Pezeshkian on his recent victory and reaffirmed India's commitment to deepening the age-old bilateral ties with Iran. He also welcomed Iran in the BRICS family.

Both leaders emphasised the shared historical and civilisational ties between the two countries and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in various fields.

"The discussion focused on key areas of cooperation, particularly the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) which are crucial for enhancing regional connectivity and economic partnership," Misri said.

"Noting that the signing of the long-term contract of Chabahar Port is an important milestone in bilateral relations, the two leaders reaffirmed its significance for reconstruction and redevelopment of Afghanistan and enhancing trade and economic linkages with Central Asia," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

Misri said Afghanistan also figured in the discussion between the two leaders. "Both of them underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region alongwith continuing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan," he said.

President Pezeshkian acknowledged India's role in Iran's accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS. "They agreed to continue their cooperation in various international forums," Misri said.

Prime Minister invited President Pezeshkian to visit India at an early date. President Pezeshkian accepted the invitation, the MEA said.

The meeting between the two leaders came amid the Israel-Hamas war and the Israel-Hezbollah conflict that have shown signs of escalation. Israel has also said it was preparing for retaliation against Iran's missile attack earlier this month.

India has been expressing deep concern over the current situation in West Asia and called for a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate the tension in the region.

Last month, Prime Minister Modi in September had called for a ceasefire in West Asia, the release of hostages and a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy and stressed that only a two-state solution will deliver enduring peace and stability in the volatile region.

Yury Ushakov, Putin's aide on foreign policy, told journalists the leaders will meet in Ashgabat while attending an event celebrating a Turkmen poet. "This meeting has great significance both for discussing bilateral issues as well as, of course, discussing the sharply escalated situation in the Middle East," Ushakov said. Leaders of Central Asian countries are meeting to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of 18th-century poet Magtymguly Pyragy. Putin's attendance had not been previously announced. Putin to meet Iran’s president in Turkmenistan for crucial talks on Middle East unrest

The United States&nbsp;Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday (Sep 27) issued criminal charges against three Iran-linked operatives for targeting ex-US president and Republican presidential candidate&nbsp;Donald Trump’s campaign. The three individuals are suspected to be affiliated with Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. Masoud Jalili, Yaser Balaghi and Seyyed Ali Aghamiri were charged with conspiracy to obtain information from a protected computer, fraud and several instances of aggravated identity theft among other counts.

Charges also include conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation and eight counts of wire fraud.

According to the indictment unsealed Friday, the three men wanted to influence US presidential elections after obtaining&nbsp;information from the&nbsp;Trump flank.

The Trump campaign on August&nbsp;10 claimed that it had been hacked and blamed Iranian actors for it. Several news media outlets, like Politico, the New York Times and the Washington Post also said they were provided with leaked confidential information from inside the Trump campaign but they refused to publish it.

Last week, US intelligence officials&nbsp;revealed that operatives had tried to reach US President&nbsp;Joe Biden's campaign in late June and early July and mailed unsolicited emails containing excerpts of the hacked information.

"Iranian malicious cyber actors in late June and early July sent unsolicited emails to individuals then associated with President Biden's campaign that contained an excerpt taken from stolen, non-public material from former President Trump's campaign as text in the emails. There is currently no information indicating those recipients replied,” the officials with the FBI said.

But the Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President&nbsp;Kamala Harris' campaign later said it considered the Iranian action spam or a phishing attempt.

Iran has strongly denied allegations of interference in US elections. Iran's United Nations mission was quoted as saying by CBS News that "the Islamic Republic of Iran does not engage in the internal uproars or electoral controversies of the United States," adding that "Iran neither has any motive nor intent to interfere in the U.S. election; and, it therefore categorically repudiates such accusations."

Also read: 'Misinformed, unacceptable': India reacts to Iran Supreme Leader Khamenei's remarks on Indian minorities "Iranian malicious cyber actors in late June and early July sent unsolicited emails to individuals then associated with President Biden's campaign that contained an excerpt taken from stolen, non-public material from former President Trump's campaign as text in the emails. There is currently no information indicating those recipients replied,” the officials with the FBI said. But the Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign later said it considered the Iranian action spam or a phishing attempt. Iran has strongly denied allegations of interference in US elections. Iran's United Nations mission was quoted as saying by CBS News that "the Islamic Republic of Iran does not engage in the internal uproars or electoral controversies of the United States," adding that "Iran neither has any motive nor intent to interfere in the U.S. election; and, it therefore categorically repudiates such accusations." Three Iranian operatives charged by DOJ for hacking Trump campaign

US intelligence officials have confirmed that Iran was responsible for a cyberattack on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, according to a statement released on Monday (Aug&nbsp;19).

In a joint announcement, the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) attributed the "recently reported activities to compromise former President Trump’s campaign" to Iran. The US intelligence said that Iranian actors, through social engineering and other tactics, sought access to individuals with direct links to the presidential campaigns of both major political parties.

"Iran’s efforts include 'thefts and disclosures' intended to influence the US election process," the statement noted.

The confirmation follows reports last week in the US media claiming that they had received internal campaign records. These records included a dossier on Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump's running mate.

Trump immediately accused the Iranian government of being behind the attack. He said that Microsoft had informed his campaign about the breach. He also claimed that only "publicly available information" had been compromised.

In a related incident, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign said that the FBI had warned of a foreign hacking attempt targeting her campaign. According to campaign officials, their cybersecurity measures successfully thwarted the attack.

The hacking efforts are part of a broader campaign by Iran to impact the US election, the intelligence agencies' statement said.&nbsp;

"Iran perceives this year’s elections to be particularly consequential in terms of the impact they could have on its national security interests, increasing Tehran’s inclination to try to shape the outcome. We have observed increasingly aggressive Iranian activity during this election cycle, specifically involving influence operations targeting the American public and cyber operations targeting presidential campaigns."

Iran says US not a neutral mediator to end Gaza war

As West Asia continues to be on edge days after Israel allegedly targeted former Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said&nbsp;on Thursday (August 15) that the US does not know if and when an Iran retaliatory attack against Israel might occur.

But Washington said it does have information that it could come with little or no notice.

"We have information… that an attack could come with little or no warning, and certainly could come in coming days, and we have to be ready for it," Kirby said in a phone briefing.

"I can’t sit here and tell you for sure that there’s been a decision [by Iran] to change their mind [about attacking Israel], and I can’t tell you for sure, if they attack, what that is going to look like, or even when it would occur," Kirby added.

"We know that Iran has made some preparations. We believe that should they choose to attack, they could do it with little or no notice… We don’t want it to come to that," Kirby said.

Earlier this week, the Biden administration said it was preparing for a potential attack on Israel by Iran and its proxies as soon as this week in retaliation for the recent assassinations of top leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah.

Iran attack may come soon and with no warning, US warns

The United States on Tuesday (July 30) imposed sanctions on five individuals and seven companies from China and Iran for allegedly supporting Tehran’s missile and drone programs.

The United States on Tuesday (July 30) imposed sanctions on five individuals and seven companies from China and Iran for allegedly supporting Tehran’s missile and drone programs. According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, these sanctions target people and businesses in China, Hong Kong, and Iran that were involved in providing key components to entities affiliated with Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL). The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control stated that those affected by the sanctions acquired "various components, including accelerometers and gyroscopes, which are crucial for Iran’s ballistic missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) programs." The Treasury also claimed that one of the sanctioned Iranian companies, Electro Optic Sairan Industries, played a role in developing the Shahed-series UAVs at the Shahed Aviation Industries Research Center. These UAVs, according to the US government agency, are "being used by Russian forces in Ukraine." Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson said, "Today's action exposes additional key front companies and trusted agents through which Iran has sought to acquire these components." Also read: China alarmed as US tests 'Quicksink' bomb to rein in bellicose PLA Navy In 2007, the US labelled the Iranian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics as a threat due to its involvement with weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems. This ministry is also said to be linked to Iran's ballistic missile program. “Iran’s reckless proliferation of its ballistic missiles and UAVs risk further instability and endangers civilian lives. The United States will continue to impose costs on those that facilitate Iran’s ability to produce these deadly weapons,” Nelson said. Masoud Pezeshkian sworn in as Iran's president The announcement was made on the same day as Iranian politician Masoud Pezeshkian was sworn in as the country's president. Pezeshkian, a moderate reformist and former heart surgeon, took office after winning a special election following the death of the previous president, Ebrahim Raisi, in May. On Tuesday, Pezeshkian was officially sworn in as Iran's ninth president during a ceremony that saw attendance from international figures, including representatives from groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and the Houthis. Although Pezeshkian is seen as a more moderate leader, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted in a fireside chat on July 19 that “the supreme leader continues to call the shots.” (With inputs from agencies)

"We will extend the hand of friendship to everyone; we are all people of this country; we should use everyone for the progress of the country," Pezeshkian said on state television.

Pezeshkian will replace late ultraconservative president Ebrahim Raisi who died in a May helicopter crash.

"These people participated with love, they came to help, and I thank all these dear people," Pezeshkian added.

In the lead-up to the elections, Iran's main reformist coalition threw its weight behind Pezeshkian. Former presidents Mohammad Khatami and the moderate Hassan Rouhani had declared support for his bid.

VIDEO: Why some Iranians celebrated Ebrahim Raisi’s death in helicopter crash

Iranians had the chance to cast ballots for parliament again on Friday in regions where candidates failed to secure enough votes in March, when conservatives and ultra-conservatives won a majority.

First-round voting saw a turnout of 41 percent, marking the lowest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Candidates needed at least 20 percent of all valid votes in their constituency to be elected in the initial round.

Friday's vote was to fill the seats of 45 deputies, out of the 290 in parliament, in 15 of Iran's 31 provinces, including Tehran, officials said.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was among the first to cast a ballot as voting began.

"If God wishes, dear people, everyone should participate in these elections and vote. Greater participation signifies a stronger parliament," he said.

In March, 25 million Iranians took part, out of 61 million eligible voters.

The main coalition of reform parties, the Reform Front, had said ahead of the first round that it would not take part in "meaningless, non-competitive and ineffective elections".

The vote was the first since nationwide protests broke out following the September 2022 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, 22.

Amini, an Iranian Kurd, had been arrested for allegedly flouting the Islamic republic's strict dress code for women.

Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi on Wednesday said participation in the second round was "as important" as the first.

"Those with influence among the people should encourage the nation to participate in it," he said, according to Mehr news agency.

In the 2016 parliamentary elections, first-round turnout was above 61 percent, before falling to 42.57 percent in 2020 when elections took place during the Covid pandemic.

Iranians vote to finalise makeup of conservative-dominated chamber

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will start his three-day visit to Pakistan starting Monday (Apr 22), as the two nations seek to mend ties following cross-border strikes last year. Raisi will land in Islamabad and meet his Pakistani counterpart, Asif Ali Zardari. Iranian foreign ministry said Sunday that Raisi will be accompanied by "a high-level delegation comprising the foreign minister... as well as a large business delegation.”

In January this year, tit-for-tat missile strikes across the porous border region of Balochistan ratcheted up tensions between Pakistan and Iran. Iran said it conducted strikes against an anti-Iran group based in Pakistan.

Then, Pakistan retaliated and conducted raids against "militant targets" in the Sistan-Balochistan province of the Shi’ite nation. This is one of the few Sunni Muslim regions in the country.

The attacks came as both nations traded allegations of harbouring terrorists on their soil.

Earlier, the Iranian foreign minister had visited Islamabad to diffuse tensions.

In the Monday to Wednesday visit, Raisi will also pay a visit to Lahore and Karachi to meet provincial leaders. The countries will further strengthen ties and enhance cooperation in "trade, connectivity, energy, agriculture, and people-to-people contacts", a statement by the Iranian foreign ministry added.

Pakistan is hoping to secure a joint gas project with Iran, in order to get rid of its long-running power crisis that has sapped its economic growth.

In March 2013, a $7.5-billion Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline was indeed signed but the project fell prey to international sanctions imposed on Tehran.

Iran has built its own portion of the 1,800-kilometre (1,100-mile) pipeline, which was supposed to link its South Pars gas fields to the Pakistani city of Nawabshah, near Karachi.

In February, Pakistan’s outgoing caretaker government approved the construction of an 80km portion of the pipeline.

The visit comes in the wake of increased Israel-Iran tensions as Tehran counts on its allies to lend its diplomatic support against the common enemy.

Iranian President Raisi to visit Pakistan for mending ties following cross-border strikes

Two&nbsp;weeks after a deadly strike on Iran's embassy in Syria's capital Damascus killed General Mohammed Reza Zahedi&nbsp;— one of the top commanders of the Quds Force, the overseas arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)&nbsp;— Tehran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, whose impact the world's only Jewish state managed to withhold due to its incredible advanced air-defence system.&nbsp;

Iran launched some 185 drones, 110 surface-to-surface missiles, and 36 cruise missiles at Israel. Most of the launches were from Iran but a small portion came from Iraq and Yemen. But 99 per cent of them were destroyed while in-air, Israel said and the US and western forces later confirmed.&nbsp;

A veteran of the Iran-Iraq war and a former confidant of Qassem Soleimani, the Quds Force chief who was assassinated by the US in Baghdad in January 2020, Gen. Zahedi was in charge of the IRGC’s operations in Lebanon and Syria, two critical theatres where Iran has built deep influence through its network of proxy Shia militias.

Iran has lost a number of senior IRGC figures since the beginning of war in Gaza after October 7 last year. Gen. Zahedi's loss was another bodily blow for the Shia powerhouse.

Tehran said it told its neighbours 72 hours in advance of its plans to attack Israel.&nbsp;

Meanwhile,&nbsp;President Joe Biden informed Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call overnight that the US would not participate in retaliatory action.&nbsp;

The US will continue to help Israel defend itself, but does not want war, John Kirby, the White House's top national security spokesperson, told ABC News&nbsp;'This Week' programme.

Our human-centric worldview has helped to be a consensus &nbsp;builder, first responder and a voice of the Global South," it said.&nbsp;

The BJP said that it is committed to ensure that New Delhi becomes a permanent member of the UN Security Council and is committed to "creating a global consensus on fight against terrorism". Reflecting on one of the key highlights from the sidelines of New Delhi G20 summit, the BJP manifesto said that it will facilitate the establishment of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/budget-2024-india-middle-east-europe-corridor-a-strategic-and-economic-game-changer-685870">India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC)</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Seoul, South Korea</h2>

In South Korea's corridors of power, in a major setback to President Yoon Suk Yeol, the liberal opposition party won a landslide majority in the country's general election to retain control of parliament.

The Democratic Party (DPK) and smaller opposition parties jointly won 192 of 300 seats in the National Assembly. The DPK's win means they will be able to fast-track and push legislation through parliament.

President Yoon Suk Yeol now has three years left in office.

This is a crushing defeat for Yoon and his People Power Party (PPP), who will now struggle to achieve its agenda in a legislature dominated by the DPK.&nbsp;

"This isn't the Democratic Party's victory but a great victory for the people," said DPK leader Lee Jae-myung earlier this week on Thursday.

Yoon is under pressure to address issues including rising food prices, a rapidly ageing population and an ongoing doctor's strike.

Yoon has been accused of being out of touch with the impact of inflation on voters.

He was recently criticised for commenting during a visit to a Seoul supermarket that a bundle of green onions priced at 875 won ( $0.65) was "reasonable".

The comment sparked a backlash, with bundles of green onions later being used as props at farmers' protests and DPK election rallies.

<h2>Beijing, China</h2>

Chinese leader Xi Jinping once called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin his "most intimate friend". On Xi's birthday in 2019, Putin gifted him a box of ice cream, in a show of bonhomie not much seen among global strongmen leaders.

It was of little surprise earlier this week when the Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov visited the Chinese capital, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/putin-to-visit-beijing-soon-lavrovs-china-visit-lays-groundwork-as-two-countries-defy-west-709744">to purportedly lay the ground</a> for a Putin visit to the world's second biggest economy and Russia's most crucial Asian neighbour.&nbsp;

Lavrov's two-day visit to China was his first high-accord visit abroad after Russian President Vladimir Putin was elected Russian president for an unprecedented fifth term last month.&nbsp;

The Kremlin confirmed that Putin's China visit was "in the works", and added that Lavrov's trip could be viewed as "preparations for upcoming interaction at the highest level", state-run news agency TASS reported.&nbsp;

Putin has deployed Russian ties with China to partly escape the crippling nature of Western economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the West after Moscow launched a military offensive on Ukraine in February 2022. The diplomatic optics of a Xi-Putin meet would hold consequence for a world under conflict with respect to Beijing's role in bringing cessation of hostilities in Ukraine.&nbsp;

Jaishankar (Modi Ka Parivar) (@DrSJaishankar) April 14, 2024 × "We have established Bharat as a reliable, trusted and dependable voice globally in the last ten years. We have demonstrated Bharat's independence of thought and action for the benefit of humanity. Our human-centric worldview has helped to be a consensus builder, first responder and a voice of the Global South," it said. The BJP said that it is committed to ensure that New Delhi becomes a permanent member of the UN Security Council and is committed to "creating a global consensus on fight against terrorism". Reflecting on one of the key highlights from the sidelines of New Delhi G20 summit, the BJP manifesto said that it will facilitate the establishment of the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC). Seoul, South Korea In South Korea's corridors of power, in a major setback to President Yoon Suk Yeol, the liberal opposition party won a landslide majority in the country's general election to retain control of parliament. The Democratic Party (DPK) and smaller opposition parties jointly won 192 of 300 seats in the National Assembly. The DPK's win means they will be able to fast-track and push legislation through parliament. President Yoon Suk Yeol now has three years left in office. This is a crushing defeat for Yoon and his People Power Party (PPP), who will now struggle to achieve its agenda in a legislature dominated by the DPK. Beijing, China Chinese leader Xi Jinping once called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin his "most intimate friend". On Xi's birthday in 2019, Putin gifted him a box of ice cream, in a show of bonhomie not much seen among global strongmen leaders. It was of little surprise earlier this week when the Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov visited the Chinese capital, to purportedly lay the ground for a Putin visit to the world's second biggest economy and Russia's most crucial Asian neighbour. Lavrov's two-day visit to China was his first high-accord visit abroad after Russian President Vladimir Putin was elected Russian president for an unprecedented fifth term last month. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin's China visit was "in the works", and added that Lavrov's trip could be viewed as "preparations for upcoming interaction at the highest level", state-run news agency TASS reported. Putin has deployed Russian ties with China to partly escape the crippling nature of Western economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the West after Moscow launched a military offensive on Ukraine in February 2022. The diplomatic optics of a Xi-Putin meet would hold consequence for a world under conflict with respect to Beijing's role in bringing cessation of hostilities in Ukraine.

Iran's attack on Israel about two weeks after a senior Iranian military official and eight others were killed in a strike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus shook the world this weekend. While Israel will decide upon its course of action in response to Tehran's Sunday attack, it remains unclear if Iran would continue with such attacks inside Israel.

The attack during Saturday through early hours of Sunday was the most sophisticated of all attacks faced by Israel since October 7, when Hamas militants stormed into southern Israel and killed about 1,200 people. The consequent retaliatory state of war in Gaza has killed more than 33,000 people.&nbsp;

Previously, Israel was attacked by Hamas and Islamic Jihad, whose rocket arsenal includes short-range (12 to 25 miles) and somewhat inaccurate 122-milimeter rockets of the Grad family, as well as Syrian-made M-302 rockets with a range of about 100 miles.

According to IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Iran also fired 120 ballistic missiles at Israel.&nbsp;

Some of the missiles managed to bypass Israel’s defences, hitting the Nevatim Airbase in southern Israel. Hagari said slight damage was caused to infrastructure at Nevatim, but the airbase was running as usual. The IDF also released images showing fighter jets after their return from downing the Iranian drones and cruise missiles.

A day after Iran admitted to carrying out a missile and drone attack in the Pakistani province of Balochistan, Islamabad has responded by striking militant targets in Iranian territory.

Pakistan conducts strike in Iran in retaliation to missile strikes

Iran's airstrikes within Pakistani territory on Tuesday night in the southwest province of Balochistan pose a threat to draw Islamabad into a larger regional confrontation. According to a statement released by the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the attacks, which Iran claimed were directed towards the militant group Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice), claimed the lives of at least two children and injured three others.

Will Pakistan retaliate against ‘unacceptable’ Iran air attacks?

Islamabad says several terrorists have been killed during the intelligence-based operation named Marg Bar Sarmachar. Tensions between Iran and Pakistan have hit a new low. How will things unfold going forward? Prof. James a. Russell, associate professor in the department of national security affairs at NPS joins us to discuss.

Pakistan-Iran Tensions: Islamabad confirms strike in Iran, atleast 9 killed

Drones and missiles were used by Iran on Wednesday to attack Pakistan, claiming to target two bases used by the terrorist organization Jaish al-Adl. This came a day after the elite Revolutionary Guards carried out similar operations against Syria and Iraq. Pakistan denounced Iran's "unprovoked violation of its airspace" and threatened "consequences" in a sharply worded statement. Pakistan has reported that three children have been injured and two children have died as a result of the attack by Iran.
