<p>The United States on Tuesday (July 30) imposed sanctions on five individuals and seven companies from China and Iran for allegedly supporting Tehran’s missile and drone programs.</p>

<p>According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, these sanctions target people and businesses in China, Hong Kong, and Iran that were involved in providing key components to entities affiliated with Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL).</p>

<p>The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control stated that those affected by the sanctions acquired "various components, including accelerometers and gyroscopes, which are crucial for Iran’s ballistic missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) programs."</p>

<p>The Treasury also claimed that one of the sanctioned Iranian companies, Electro Optic Sairan Industries, played a role in developing the Shahed-series UAVs at the Shahed Aviation Industries Research Center. These UAVs, according to the US government agency, are "being used by Russian forces in Ukraine."</p>

<p>Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson said, "Today's action exposes additional key front companies and trusted agents through which Iran has sought to acquire these components."</p>

<p>A video shared on social media shows Afsaneh Yousefi, whose son was executed alongside three other prisoners in January for alleged links to Israel, dancing in celebration after Raisi's death.&nbsp;</p>

<p>First-round voting saw a turnout of 41 percent, marking the lowest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Candidates needed at least 20 percent of all valid votes in their constituency to be elected in the initial round.</p>

Iranian President Raisi to visit Pakistan for mending ties following cross-border strikes

<p>Two&nbsp;weeks after a deadly strike on Iran's embassy in Syria's capital Damascus killed General Mohammed Reza Zahedi&nbsp;— one of the top commanders of the Quds Force, the overseas arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)&nbsp;— Tehran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, whose impact the world's only Jewish state managed to withhold due to its incredible advanced air-defence system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Iran launched some 185 drones, 110 surface-to-surface missiles, and 36 cruise missiles at Israel. Most of the launches were from Iran but a small portion came from Iraq and Yemen. But 99 per cent of them were destroyed while in-air, Israel said and the US and western forces later confirmed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A veteran of the Iran-Iraq war and a former confidant of Qassem Soleimani, the Quds Force chief who was assassinated by the US in Baghdad in January 2020, Gen. Zahedi was in charge of the IRGC’s operations in Lebanon and Syria, two critical theatres where Iran has built deep influence through its network of proxy Shia militias.</p>

<p>Iran has lost a number of senior IRGC figures since the beginning of war in Gaza after October 7 last year. Gen. Zahedi's loss was another bodily blow for the Shia powerhouse.</p>

<p>Tehran said it told its neighbours 72 hours in advance of its plans to attack Israel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;President Joe Biden informed Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call overnight that the US would not participate in retaliatory action.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US will continue to help Israel defend itself, but does not want war, John Kirby, the White House's top national security spokesperson, told ABC News&nbsp;'This Week' programme.</p>

<p>According to experts, US had multiple options on its table to ensure sanctions on Iran remain enforced, especially in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.</p>

<p>UN Security Council Resolution 2231 states unequivocally that the US is a partner to the resolution that endorsed the JCPOA. The Trump administration previously cited the resolution in its push to trigger snapback sanctions.</p>

<p>Apart from taking this route, the Biden administration could have asked EU3—made up of the UK, France and Germany—to dispatch a letter to the president of the UNSC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, the Biden administration has come under fire for not doing enough to retain the sanctions.</p>

<p>The US Navy said that over 3,000 American military personnel have recently arrived in the Red Sea in two warships, in a purported response to Iran's alleged actions involving tanker seizures.</p>

<p>This increased US deployment follows a series of incidents over the past two years in which the West accused Iran of attempting to control nearly 20 international ships in the region.</p>

US deploys thousands of troops in Red Sea as tensions with Iran intensify

<p>In order to tackle fresh security challenges from Iran, the US on Thursday (July 20) announced the deployment of new military assets to West Asia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin approved the deployment of an Amphibious Readiness Group/Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU) into the region.</p>

<p>The readiness group is made up of three ships—including the Bataan, an amphibious assault ship—whereas an expeditionary unit usually comprises about 2,500 Marines.</p>

<p>Along with Bataan, other two US warships—the USS Mesa Verde and the USS Carter Hall—have also been deployed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This deployment comes after an initial decision of sending the F-35s, F-16s, and a guided missile destroyer, the USS Thomas Hudner (DDG-116), to the region in previous weeks.</p>

<p>The US claims Iran has increasingly sought to interrupt and block the safe passage of US commercial ships in recent times through the Strait of Hormuz, the 39km passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.</p>

<p>In early July, the US said it prevented an Iranian attempt to seize two oil tankers near the Strait. In one incident, Iranian forces even opened fire on one oil tanker, prompting the USS McFaul destroyer to “drive off” the attacking vessels.</p>

<p>The US claims nearly 20 such incidents took place in 2021 alone.</p>

<p>“We remain vigilant and ready to protect navigational rights in these critical waters,” US Vice Admiral Brad Cooper said recently.</p>
